04 December - National Evening Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there.
00:01A relatively brief interlude between rain bands and showers.
00:05That will lead to clear spells, frost and fog patches overnight.
00:10As one low clears its front north-eastwards, albeit slowly, and as the isobars attached
00:16to this low open out, we will see lighter winds and clearer skies for a time.
00:21Initially Northern Ireland and Wales, but increasingly it's the Midlands, East Anglia
00:25in the south-east overnight, where we'll see those long-lasting clear spells.
00:30As a result, some frost pockets and patches of fog forming by dawn, temperatures generally
00:36around zero or just below in these areas, and that freezing fog risk greatest towards the
00:44south-east of England can cause some issues on the roads first thing Friday.
00:48But towards the north-east, we've still got a weather front across eastern Scotland, bringing
00:53showery rain, a lot of cloud cover here, so mostly frost-free, and showers continuing
00:58to affect western parts of the country overnight as well, cloud returning to Northern Ireland.
01:04So again, frost-free towards the west.
01:07But chilly start to the day nevertheless for many, plenty of bright weather away from those
01:12fog patches, fog lifting by late morning.
01:15And then we keep sunny spells for much of the afternoon into the east of England, as well
01:19as parts of central and eastern Scotland.
01:20Still some showers and a blustery wind for the far north-east of Scotland.
01:24But towards the west, our next Atlantic system rushes in, bringing thickening cloud, heavy
01:30rain and strengthening wind, coastal gales by the afternoon.
01:34So Northern Ireland, Western England, Wales, again, tricky conditions on the roads, I think,
01:40Friday rush hour because of that wet and windy weather sweeping in.
01:44It turns things cloudy as well as we end the afternoon into the east.
01:48And then through the evening, that weather front works its way eastwards across the country.
01:53Soon replaced by further showers, these are big clumps of rain as well, so some longer
01:59spells of wet weather and these heavy downpours will be moving in thick and fast one after
02:05the other.
02:06Accompanied by a gusty wind, coastal gales towards the far south-west.
02:10Windy as well in the far north-east, again with showers for Shetland and Orkney.
02:14So a blustery start to the weekend, generally frostery because of the cloud, the wind and
02:18the rain.
02:19And really, Saturday is a very showery day.
02:22Those showers affecting much of the country, a lot of cloud cover as well, not many breaks
02:27in the cloud.
02:29And the showers will be most frequent towards the south-west, that's where they're coming
02:32from, this south-westerly breeze.
02:35But also there will be plenty of showers in the north-east.
02:38Eastern parts, some central parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, cloudy, but fewer showers.
02:44You wouldn't rule them out anywhere.
02:46And where the showers do occur, particularly towards the south-west, they're going to be
02:48heavy.
02:49They're going to be accumulating through the day, 20 millimetres or more.
02:54Feeling cool with the gusty wind, 12 Celsius or so in the south, 9 further north but a little
02:59bit milder compared with recent days, or at least slightly higher temperatures on the thermometer
03:04compared with recent days, but not feeling particularly pleasant.
03:08Sunday another spell of rain moves through, followed again by showers and low pressure
03:13remains in charge early next week.
