00:00The one defense I think you might have of Quinshawn is that, yes,
00:04I think there are vision issues there.
00:06That could be as simple as he doesn't trust what's happening in front of him,
00:10so he's second-guessing himself.
00:11Like, that is one way in which the offensive line playing poorly,
00:14if you're having confidence issues, can take you to another level
00:17of having confidence issues.
00:19Yeah, it's just interesting when you talk about the yards after contact
00:21and you put them up against with Braylon, what he did for the Jets yesterday.
00:25But we've always known that.
00:27Like, Quinshawn is always, even last year, Nick, his yards per attempt
00:30were not particularly high, but where did all the advanced analytical people
00:33fall in love and start drooling over Quinshawn?
00:36It was all about yards after contact and when he gets hit.
00:38And so, like, we know he's good after he gets hit,
00:40but he's just not seeing enough of the open holes in order to be able
00:43to attack it enough.
00:45216-474-0092.
00:47How much of the run game woes are on Quinshawn
00:50and how much are they on the offensive line?
00:53The general thing that needs to be taken out of today's show is
00:57the offensive line, that is as bad as we've seen them perform,
00:59and they haven't exactly been a murderer's row this year.
01:03But that felt like across the board.
01:06Spencer Fano had some real struggles.
01:08There were some little protection things.
01:10I think Deshawn, just quite frankly, whiffed on as well.
01:14But, like, Austin Barber got chewed up.
01:16Like, I was a little offended, as a Browns fan, that PFF,
01:22six of their seven, six, seven, of their top offensive grades
01:26for the Jets game were the offensive line and Isaiah Bond.
01:30It's like Denzel Boston and then Isaiah Bond in between.
01:33At some point, do you, do you, did, I know they fired all their analysts
01:38like a year ago.
01:39Yeah.
01:40Is this just AI?
01:42Is this chat GPT grading this?
01:43They're still making sure to hammer DeJuan Jones and the 33 snaps
01:47that he played, okay?
01:48He didn't get a kind assessment in this, but you're right.
01:51I mean, they have Zion Johnson as the best player on the offensive side
01:53of the ball yesterday.
01:54Now, the problem with that, though, is that we are kind of evaluating
01:57crap against crap.
01:59Yes, the offensive line was bad.
02:01Everybody on that offense was bad yesterday.
02:03If you want to really break it down, like, name me the guy on the offensive
02:06side of the ball that you left feeling awesome about.
02:09I'm thinking.
02:10Well, when you only score.
02:11You know what, Denzel.
02:13Denzel, Denzel, he had 46 yards and a touchdown.
02:16The touchdown pass in and of itself.
02:17Yeah, I think so.
02:18But even in that, like, if Denzel is going to be this awesome playmaker,
02:21and he is an awesome playmaker, when Concepcion goes out and you have no one
02:26to be able to throw the ball to, it feels like.
02:28At least they're not throwing the ball to Fan and they're just kind of
02:29ignoring him.
02:30Like, I don't know.
02:32Shouldn't Boston have been heavily involved?
02:34The same thing they did to Garrett Wilson on that opening drive.
02:36Shouldn't it just turn into that for Denzel Boston and it wasn't able to?
02:39I do think, I think that's what they're going to try and do with Casey Concepcion.
02:42And I think this is where that injury matters so much more.
02:48I think what we have is a little bit of proof of concept from the passing side
02:52of things that I think Casey and Denzel, long-term, are going to be able to be
02:57what's best for each other.
02:59Because I think Casey's speed draws defensive gravity and draws some attention
03:04away from Denzel.
03:06And then Denzel's just consistent playmaking, I think, is going to open up
03:09opportunities for Casey.
03:11The one benefit of the doubt we've not given, and I think that's probably a
03:16failure by me three and a half hours into the show, is I think Casey's injury
03:21in this game specifically really sunk your battleship early and it left you
03:27reeling from then on.
03:28So what's funny, and sometimes I play a game in my own head, I'm like,
03:31all right, what do I think Nick's takeaway is going to be?
03:33And it's not so it helps me better with my own prep.
03:36I just like, it's a guessing game I like to play.
03:37I do it with a lot of the hosts at the station.
03:39I'm like, what do I think Ken's going to say?
03:40What do I think Lyme was going to say?
03:42It's just a fun measuring stick of my own.
03:44I was convinced I was going to come in the studio today and you were going to
03:47put it all on Concepcion's injury.
03:49Oh, no, not all of it.
03:50I thought that it was going to be like the moment that Concepcion got injured,
03:53you watch the offense flutter, you watch the offense not be able to do how it
03:57was supposed to do it, and you watched really, I mean, really, they just from
04:00an offensive standpoint, ineptitude across the board, I did not see you hammering
04:03the offensive line as bad as you do.
04:05That one I should have predicted because you're an offensive line guy.
04:07You love that, and you'd be the first to point out the hog mollies, but I really
04:12thought it was going to be once Concepcion got injured, the whole entire game
04:15changed because the offense changed and you didn't know what to do from there.
04:18No, unfortunately, and it's interesting because a few people have come out of the
04:23woods to kind of hammer us for defending Deshaun, and it's like, guys, if we start
04:27from a position he wasn't very good yesterday, that we're not exactly giving him the
04:31old Peterland pass, what I will say is, like, there are, the Browns are asking
04:38Deshaun to do a lot early in the season, and it's shown by he's carrying their run
04:43game.
04:44I mean, nine times out of ten, if there's a big play on third down that happens on
04:48the ground, it's because Deshaun made it happen, and yesterday was no different.
04:51He had that great, I think it was 19-yard run late in the game.
04:54That was big, yeah.
04:55But I think when it comes to, okay, you've got to overcome your offensive line, and the
05:02wide receivers are going to drop the ball, including dropping a potential touchdown with
05:08Isaiah Bond, and, oh, yeah, we can't really run the ball consistently either.
05:15Like, it's not necessarily defensive, Deshaun, but there has to be a reality here.
05:20I know we're zero-sum with Deshaun.
05:22Did you win the game, and did you play well enough, and yesterday, neither of those things
05:26can be said, but if that's going to be the formula, if yesterday's the formula that Deshaun's
05:32going to have to overcome, I just, I don't think you can expect, I don't think if you
05:37swapped quarterbacks, Shador could thrive in that scenario, Dylan Gabriel, anybody on
05:42this roster, and that goes beyond any great quarterbacks in the NFL.
05:45It just reminded me of so many games of last year.
05:47I felt like I was watching a game from last season, even down to the idea that they didn't
05:51pull out the win at the end when they were supposed to.
05:53That felt very much like the eight wins over the previous two seasons that Stefanski led
05:57the Browns to, and so the game, though, as a whole, and just seeing the offensive line
06:02not be anything, the run game not be anything, the quarterback not even blaming the quarterback,
06:07just looking around and be like, oh, that's a lot of drops.
06:09That's a lot of plays that probably should have been made that weren't made.
06:12It just reminded me a lot of last season and what we went through with Shador.
06:16216-474-0092, or the Browns asking Deshaun Watson to overcome too much, he is a veteran.
06:24He's in there to give you the best chance to win.
06:26I struggle to think any other quarterback on this roster would have given you a better
06:30chance to win, given the way everything around the quarterback position did not go right.
06:36Let's go with Thomas in Brunswick.
06:38Welcome to the show.
06:40Thank you, my friends.
06:41How are you?
06:42Good, buddy.
06:42How are you doing, buddy?
06:44Well, you know, I thought the play calling was horrible.
06:46I mean, it was horrible.
06:48Like which specifically?
06:50Well, we don't have no running game, okay?
06:53We don't have no running game.
06:55And I just thought, you know, Deshaun wasn't, I don't know.
07:01There was no, there was one pass down the field to Boston.
07:04That was it, okay?
07:06There was no crossovers, you know, over the middle.
07:09You know, there was no, none of those things or anything like that.
07:13I just thought that it was a horrible game call.
07:17All right, Tommy.
07:18We appreciate you, buddy.
07:19Thank you so much.
07:21What's fun about those calls is it's like the proof's always in the pudding, right?
07:24Like, like there's no, there's no, if I was trying to defend Munkin as if I was his attorney
07:29and this was the court at law, Tom, he's going to win those calls all the time.
07:33Cause it's like, okay, you scored 12 points.
07:35What defense do I have that the play calling was good?
07:38Yeah.
07:38At the same point, I can't remember too many play calls that I thought I didn't love.
07:44Anytime somebody throws like a screen, there was a screen play on third and 12.
07:48Yeah.
07:49Uh, that I think was supposed to go to Quinn Sean or somehow.
07:54Anyway, somebody might've been the one where Barbara got called for a holding on it, which
07:58was like, Austin, that's not what you're supposed to do on a screen.
08:01I mean, but there was like one of those by and large, I don't know how anyone could tell
08:06what anything was called because the play was, the play broke down within the first second
08:10and a half.
08:11Well, again, you were in, you were out of these drives so quick.
08:13Third quarter, you had six total plays for 10 yards in the fourth quarter.
08:17After the touchdown, we talked about it.
08:19Three different drives, negative 27 yards total.
08:22Like you just, you were out of this so quick.
08:24I am surprised we haven't heard more weather related calls today.
08:28Oh, that's interesting.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Okay.
08:29Granted, if you're trying to build up excuses for the Browns.
08:32Like I, I, I thought we might have more excuses for this team given they started three and
08:36one, but like any of the potential defenses of what went wrong, because again, you can
08:41blame Isaiah, the, the, the, the drops in general on, well, the ball was slippery and, and,
08:47and I, you know, the jets had some issues with that too.
08:50Oh, the, the offensive line, their footing was off because they were getting pushed around
08:54because they're trying to defend and it's slippery out there.
08:56Uh, what's the other one?
08:58Um, Isaiah Bond drops, uh, there's another one.
09:01Oh, the, the, the, the special teams issues.
09:03Oh yeah.
09:03With Bohorkas.
09:04Bohorkas.
09:05That's another one.
09:06I'm, I'm a little blown away.
09:07We, I'm glad we're not hearing it by the way.
09:09You want to know why, and we've not brought this up in the show yet.
09:12Uh, but a lot of people, it felt like we're going to the idea that Deshaun has been telling
09:16us forever.
09:17He doesn't play well in these types of conditions.
09:19And he has.
09:19I mean, part of the reason why he didn't want to come to the Browns was that game that Houston
09:22played, uh, at the time first energy stadium, I know we all remember because John McClain
09:27came on this radio station was like, John, Deshaun doesn't want to go there.
09:30He played in a game where they wouldn't land airplanes at Burke next door because it was
09:34so windy and because of the rain and how awful it was.
09:36And he doesn't play well in those conditions.
09:38And so we haven't brought that up yet at all today, mainly because I don't think either
09:41one of us think it was Deshaun's fault for why they lost that game, but that is part
09:45of the equation for a lot of people.
09:46Deshaun, even in, in good weather would have been struggled, but in bad weather, that's just
09:50not how he operates.
09:51All right.
09:51Let's go with Phil and Beachwood.
09:53Welcome to the show.
09:54Phil and Beachwood.
09:55Well, it's actually bill even better than that.
09:59Bill.
10:00Thank you for remembering my name.
10:02Well, the reason for my call is I think a lot of the problems with the running game is
10:07they telegraph what they're going to do.
10:09Uh, Deshaun Watson does not like to play on the center.
10:13He likes to play the shotgun only.
10:15And they kind of telegraph everything they're doing when there's nobody in the backfield.
10:19It's going to be a path.
10:21And when there is somebody in the backfield, most likely it's going to be a run.
10:24So I think they tell him about telegraph everything and the defense tightens up accordingly.
10:29And I think that leads to some of their struggle.
10:31Uh, so I do think the usage of shotgun and, and thank you for the call there, Bill, uh, that
10:37was Jax who wrote down the name, not Nick or Jonathan.
10:40So we only said his name.
10:42Like I said, Oh, thanks, Phil.
10:43What do you want to talk about?
10:44Oh, Phil, I thought it was interesting when Catalan said on the broadcast that, uh, that,
10:58you know, the Browns have played like 95% of their snaps out of the shotgun.
11:04And Deshaun was like, yeah, I really feel more comfortable.
11:07And then they, they called about his history in Clemson and in Houston, his success out
11:11of the shotgun.
11:12My first thought wasn't, I wonder what this has on the impact this has on the run game.
11:17My first thought was it took Kevin Stefanski four years to not do that.
11:22I think this was part of the conversation you and I both had when they finally went to
11:26that Ken Dorsey.
11:27Oh my God, what are we doing here?
11:29The schmuck offense where it was like, okay, took you four years to realize Deshaun might
11:34like to play out of the shotgun and be more comfortable out of the gun.
11:37Yeah.
11:37There was, there was a couple of differences out of yesterday's game where it felt that
11:40way.
11:40A couple of things they mentioned about, uh, that like a Munkin had just gone back and
11:44seen, and it was, yeah, it's, it's, it's, we're just always going to have this with
11:47Deshaun.
11:48There's always going to be something like, Oh, we should have gone back and done this.
11:50Deshaun will be gone off this team for five years and we'll still be talking about things
11:54they should have done.
11:54But I do think that that is a, that is another conversation point of Quinn Sean and his comfort,
12:01how comfortable he is out of the shotgun.
12:03I don't know.
12:04I'm like, I I'll have to go back and actually look at like what he ran the most out of,
12:08of, uh, and what success he had most, whether it was out of the backfield, I mean, out of
12:13the quarterback under center or out of the shotgun last year.
12:15But like that, that is a tangible difference and that will make a substantial difference for
12:20part of the problem too, is that you say it had the most success and it's like, he didn't
12:24really have success last year.
12:26Like we keep going to this idea that there's like a mountain of evidence to go back on.
12:30He had won 100 yard game last year.
12:31He averaged under four yards per carry and not all of this is his fault, obviously, but
12:36if you're trying to find things in the pro world to fall back on with Quinn Sean, it's
12:40going to be tough.
