00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were
00:34persecuting you and conspiring against your life. Root out I beg you from my heart all evil love of
00:43any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men especially those who trouble me. Pardon me my holy redeemer for
00:59having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having for the sake of
01:05vile pleasures turned myself from you. Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who ate the
01:14Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of the law giving them an
01:20example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet wiping them
01:26with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example may penetrate my soul destroying thoroughly any
01:35haughtiness and pride within me. Give me O Lord the deepest humility that I may without delay perform
01:43the lowest ministry to all men. Give me perfect obedience that I may with complete diligence observe
01:51as your commandments whatever your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most
01:58fervent charity that I may sincerely love all mankind. Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who out
02:09of
02:09your unspeakable love gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist and in it given yourself to us with wondrous
02:17liberality so that you might remain with us even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:25Grant me I beg you O Lord an earnest longing and in kindle in my innermost soul an intense hunger
02:33for
02:34this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to the table of life I may receive you with chaste
02:40affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart. May my soul so thirst for you now and so
02:49languish in your love that I may one day be found suitable to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom
02:56to the glory everlasting of your name. Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who when you were
03:04about
03:04to leave the world commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples and
03:12most earnestly commended them in prayer to your father most plainly showing how tenderly you love them
03:21and us who were to believe through their word. Grant that my heart may evermore relish your word and
03:30that I may find your words sweeter than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation
03:38may so glide into my heart that I may be wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways
03:46O Lord my God
03:47that your holy will may be done in and by me forever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who went out with your disciples across the Kedron Brook
04:01and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken. May I entirely give up
04:10my will
04:10and always follow and love yours. May I for your honour and for the salvation of my brothers and sisters
04:17boldly endure any adversity and be willing even to lay down my life if your divine providence should so ordain
04:26it.
04:28Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who as your passion drew nigh began to be fought sorrowful
04:35and sad
04:36with a heavy heart and so that by transferring the weakness of all your members to yourself
04:42you might be able to console and strengthen them when they were in their time of fear at the approach
04:48of death
04:50by this your own weakness which you have willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me I beg you both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief which I have thus far endured may be for your glory and for the remission of
05:09my sins.
05:11Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary weakness and confirm and establish my soul whole in you.
05:21Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to your
05:28Holy Father
05:29humbly offering your whole self to him saying your will be done. Give me grace in every necessity and trouble
05:39to fly to you in prayer and freely to resign and myself give myself up to your will.
05:47May I never unduly endeavour to escape from trouble but receive all things from your hand with a quiet mind
05:56and may I endure everything in meekness of spirit for your love. Amen
06:05O Lord open our lips and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:17O be joyful in the Lord, holy bands, serve the Lord with gladness, and come in knowledge,
06:30rent and drill the top. Be sure that the Lord needs God, it is he that can bring us and
06:43love we ourselves,
06:45the heart of his people, the heart of his people and the sheep of his pasture.
06:53O put your way to his peace with mercy, and in tune in his cross with grace, be thankful unto
07:06him and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:12O the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth and joy from generation to generation.
07:35O glory be to the Father, and to the Father, and to the Holy Ghost, and to the Holy Ghost,
07:48as it was in the beginning,
07:50is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen
08:14Hear my prayer, O God
08:19Hear my prayer, O God
08:20And hide my night instead of at home
08:25Take me unto me and near thee
08:32How I mourn in my prayer, and am blessed.
08:40The enemy cry at stone, and the ungodly cry from the fast.
08:50For they are my little bit of misty, so perniciously are his death against me.
09:04My heart is disquieted within me, and the fear of death is born and upon me.
09:17Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and an horrible dread have opened me.
09:32And I said, O that I had wings like a drum, O then would I flee away and be at
09:49rest.
09:50O then would I get thee away from home, and remain in the wilderness.
10:05I would make haste to escape, because of the stormy wind and tempest.
10:18Destroy their comfort, O Lord, and divide them.
10:24For they are by the righteous present, right in the city.
10:32They are not my God, but within the walls they are all.
10:40Mischief, all sorrow, and sorrow have been done in some ways.
10:48Mischief, all sorrow, and sorrow have been done in some ways.
11:14Mischief, all sorrow, and sorrow, and sorrow have been done in some ways.
11:17Mischief, all sorrow have been done in some ways.
11:26For them never let you, I know that he dressed and found him.
11:36But it was even thou my companion, my guide and my own familiar friend.
11:49He took me transfer together, and walked in the house of God that stands.
12:02As for me, I will fall upon God, and the Lord shall save me.
12:11In the evening and morning and at noonday will I pray.
12:18And that instantly, and he shall hear my voice.
12:27It is he that hath delivered my soul in peace.
12:33From the battle that falls against me, for them never let you with me.
12:43Yea, even God that endureth forever, shall hear thee and break them down.
12:55For they will not turn or fear, O Lord.
13:04He laid his hands upon such as be at peace with him.
13:12And he prayed, and he prayed, he is coming.
13:19The words of his mouth were softer than water,
13:27Having warm in his heart.
13:32His words were smoother than water,
13:37And yet he may bear his arms.
13:43For cast thy burden upon the Lord,
13:47And he shall know his king,
13:52And shall not suffer the righteous,
13:56The war for heaven.
14:00And as for them,
14:04Thou, O Lord, shalt bring men
14:07To the feet of destruction.
14:10The blood that he had received from men
14:14Shall not leave out of their gate,
14:19Nevertheless, my trust shall be with thee alone.
14:29Glory be to the sun,
14:34And to the sun,
14:38And to the holy rose,
14:43As it was in the beginning,
14:47Is now and ever shall be,
14:54World without end.
15:03Amen.
15:15A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 6.
15:20Now it came about that on the Sabbath,
15:23Jesus was going through the fields of grain,
15:27And his disciples took the heads of the grain for food,
15:30Crushing them in their hands.
15:34But some of the Pharisees said,
15:36Why do you do what is not right to do on the Sabbath?
15:40Jesus said,
15:41Have you not seen in the writings what David did
15:44When he was in need of food,
15:46He and those who were with him?
15:48How he went into the house of God,
15:50And took for food the holy bread,
15:53Which only the priests may take,
15:54And gave it to those who were with him.
15:58He said,
15:59The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
16:04And it came about on another Sabbath,
16:06That Jesus went into the synagogue,
16:08And was teaching them.
16:10The man was there,
16:11Whose right hand was dead.
16:14The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him,
16:16To see if he would make him well on the Sabbath,
16:19That they might say something against him.
16:23He had knowledge of their thoughts,
16:25And said to the man whose hand was dead,
16:27Get up and come into the middle.
16:29He got up and came forward.
16:32Jesus said,
16:34I put the question to you,
16:36Is it right to do good on the Sabbath,
16:38Or to do evil?
16:40To give life,
16:41Or to take it away?
16:44Looking around at all of them,
16:46He said to the man,
16:48Put out your hand.
16:49And as he did so,
16:51His hand was made well.
16:53But they were full of wrath,
16:55And were talking about what they might do to Jesus.
17:01It was during this time,
17:02That Jesus went out into the mountains to pray,
17:05And he spent all night in prayer to God.
17:07When morning came,
17:09He called his disciples,
17:10And chose twelve of them,
17:12Whom he also named apostles.
17:15Simon,
17:15Who he named Peter,
17:17And his brother Andrew,
17:19And James,
17:20John,
17:20Philip,
17:21Bartholomew,
17:22Matthew,
17:23Thomas,
17:24James the son of Alphaeus,
17:26Simon,
17:27Who was called of the Zealot,
17:29Judas the son of James,
17:30And Judas Iscariot,
17:32Who became a traitor.
17:35Then he came down with them,
17:36And stood on a level place.
17:39The large number of his disciples,
17:41Had gathered along with the vast multitude,
17:43From all over Judea,
17:45From Jerusalem,
17:46And from the coast of Tyre and Sidon.
17:50They came to hear him,
17:53And to be healed of their diseases,
17:55And those who suffered from unclean spirits,
17:58Were cured.
18:00The whole crowd was trying to touch him,
18:02Because power was coming out of him,
18:04And healing them all.
18:08This is the word of the Lord.
18:10Thanks be to God.
18:18Jesus had one of his first major clashes with authority,
18:21Over the Sabbath.
18:24Over the years since the law had been handed down,
18:27There had been many,
18:28Many embellishments,
18:30Made beyond the authorities,
18:31As to the practicalities,
18:32Of what should and should not be done,
18:35In this instance on the Sabbath.
18:38For example,
18:39The gathering of food from the fields,
18:41Was not permitted.
18:44The disciples were clearly hungry,
18:46And had picked some food,
18:48To make from the field,
18:51In contravention to the law.
18:56Jesus makes a clear distinction.
18:58If you are hungry,
18:59You should eat.
19:00For if you are hungry,
19:02You cannot concentrate on the word of God.
19:04For you are distracted by your hunger.
19:08Remember Paul advising the Corinthians,
19:11To make sure they had eaten,
19:12Before they went to church.
19:14So they did not eat more,
19:16Than their share of the meal.
19:19How can we expect,
19:20To sit quietly,
19:22And concentrate,
19:24On this Sunday's sermon,
19:26If we have gone without our breakfast,
19:30And we are making strange noises,
19:32From lower down.
19:37Let us think a little longer about this.
19:40Jesus teaches us,
19:41That the things are necessary,
19:42Are necessary.
19:45Those Pharisees,
19:46Who were first in line to criticise,
19:48Had they not eaten that day?
19:50I am sure they had.
19:53Were their wives,
19:54Not working at home,
19:55Doing what they do,
19:56On any other day of the week?
19:59Preparing food for them?
20:01Of course they were.
20:03And yet,
20:04Here they are criticising,
20:06The disciples,
20:07For plucking ears of grain to eat.
20:11And,
20:12Let us be honest,
20:13How many of us,
20:14Would want to eat grain,
20:16Picked,
20:16Straight from the field?
20:18It hardly an appetising meal,
20:20And perhaps,
20:21I am sure they only took,
20:23What was necessary for them.
20:28On the Sabbath,
20:29It is perfectly in order,
20:31To do what is necessary.
20:34If we were to have,
20:35Unexpected guests,
20:36I am quite sure,
20:37That it would not offend God,
20:39If we went out,
20:39To buy food to feed them.
20:42But we should perhaps,
20:43Avoid going to the shops,
20:44For our own,
20:46For our own needs,
20:48For example.
20:50After all,
20:51What are the other days,
20:51Of the week for?
20:54We should always remember,
20:56That it is a special day,
20:58Of the week,
20:59Set aside for God,
21:01And for our spiritual,
21:02And physical regeneration.
21:07Then we have another example,
21:09Of Jesus demonstrating,
21:10The proper observance,
21:12Of the Sabbath.
21:13We read that he started,
21:15By attending God,
21:16In the synagogue,
21:17And not only attending,
21:18He went on to preach.
21:21And then we read,
21:22That he performed,
21:22The work of mercy,
21:23On the Sabbath,
21:24Whilst in the synagogue itself.
21:30It is the obligation,
21:31Of all of us,
21:31To put our worship of God,
21:33First,
21:33Every Sabbath.
21:35There is a seat,
21:36In every church,
21:39For one of us,
21:40With our name on it.
21:45Once upon a time,
21:46That might have been the case,
21:48Literally,
21:48But even today,
21:49We are expected.
21:52If we are not in church,
21:53There had better be,
21:54A good reason.
21:57Jesus did not leave us,
21:58With many commandments,
21:59But one of them,
22:00Was to share in the Eucharist.
22:03So what compelling reason,
22:05Keeps us out of church,
22:07A lack of priority,
22:09Perhaps.
22:12Then we come,
22:13To those Pharisees again,
22:15They were sitting there,
22:17Looking at Jesus,
22:18And then looking at the man,
22:19With the withered hand,
22:20Then turning to look,
22:21At Jesus again.
22:24What would he do?
22:27Jesus asks a very simple question,
22:30Is he right to do something good,
22:31On the Sabbath?
22:33By implication,
22:35He suggests that if not,
22:36Then he must be right,
22:37To do something bad,
22:38On the Sabbath.
22:41Jesus could do one of two things,
22:44A good thing,
22:45And heal the man,
22:46Or a bad thing,
22:48And ignore the man.
22:52We cannot know,
22:53Whether the man went to the synagogue,
22:54In anticipation,
22:55Of being healed or not.
22:57For it is quite possible,
22:58That the man was indeed,
22:59A regular attender,
23:01And that he and Jesus met,
23:02With no intention on his part.
23:06In any event,
23:07Jesus was determined,
23:08To teach the Pharisees,
23:10And ourselves,
23:11A strong lesson.
23:13If we go to church,
23:15On a Sunday,
23:15We pray,
23:16And repeat the creed,
23:18We listen to the word,
23:19And then to the sermon,
23:20And share in the Eucharist.
23:23And then we ignore,
23:24A brother in need.
23:26What does that say,
23:27About our faith?
23:32During the course,
23:33Of this passage,
23:34There is a significant,
23:35But a subtle change of gear,
23:37In the ministry of Jesus,
23:39And there are three distinct parts to it.
23:45We read that Jesus went up,
23:46Into the mansions to pray,
23:48And that he was there all night,
23:49Praying to his father.
23:53Knowing that it was time,
23:55He wished to spend the time,
23:56With God seeking out confirmation,
23:58Of his will,
23:59In all that he was about to do.
24:02Was this the right time?
24:04Who should he pick,
24:05To be the disciples?
24:07Where should he go next?
24:10These were things,
24:11That would have been in his mind,
24:12And although he probably had,
24:13A good idea as to,
24:14What the answers might have been,
24:16He wanted to hear,
24:18What his father had to say,
24:19And to determine,
24:20His will.
24:23Yet not my will,
24:24But yours,
24:25Be done.
24:26Luke 22,
24:27Luke 22,
24:29How often,
24:30When we have big decisions to take,
24:32Do we stop and pray,
24:34Before taking them?
24:36Equally importantly,
24:37When we pray,
24:39Do we go somewhere quiet,
24:40And wait for the answer?
24:44We often think of his disciples,
24:46As being twelve in number,
24:47But this is wrong,
24:49For we read,
24:50That he chose the twelve,
24:51From amongst the disciples,
24:55We will never know,
24:56How many disciples there were,
24:58But I suspect,
24:59It's safe to assume,
25:00There were a lot more than twelve,
25:03Jesus wanted his close group,
25:05Those with whom he would go on,
25:07To share the most important truths,
25:09Explaining as much,
25:10As they were capable of understanding,
25:12And what a mixed bag of people,
25:14They were going to be,
25:17Fishermen,
25:18Village people,
25:19A tax collector,
25:20And a terrorist,
25:22Not one single theologian,
25:24In their midst,
25:27However,
25:28What they did have in common,
25:29Was a hunger,
25:30For the knowledge,
25:30Of what Jesus was teaching,
25:32And an acceptance,
25:33Of what he had to say,
25:36Jesus would get into,
25:38Enough theological debates,
25:39With his enemies,
25:41For his friends,
25:42He chose those,
25:43Who would listen,
25:43And accept,
25:44What he had to say,
25:46But which group,
25:48Do we fall into?
25:55Then we read,
25:56That a large number,
25:57Of his disciples,
25:58Had gathered,
25:59Bringing a crowd,
26:00From all over the land,
26:01From all over the land,
26:01From all over the land,
26:03The crowd had come,
26:04With two things in mind,
26:05To hear,
26:05And to be healed,
26:07To believe,
26:08And to be saved,
26:09We are told,
26:10That the people,
26:11Only had to touch him,
26:12And they would be healed,
26:13If only I touch his cloak,
26:15I will be healed,
26:17Matthew 9, 21,
26:20Perhaps we could all do,
26:21With a little more,
26:21Of that sort of faith,
26:23For although we all believe,
26:25September and our faith,
26:26Can be in a little,
26:27Short supply,
26:33Let us pray,
26:36O Lord,
26:37Who never fails,
26:38To help and govern,
26:40Those who you bring up,
26:41In your steadfast fear,
26:43And love,
26:44Keep us,
26:45We beseech you,
26:46Under the protection,
26:47Of your good providence,
26:49And make us,
26:50Have a perpetual fear,
26:52And love,
26:52Of your holy name,
26:55Through Jesus Christ,
26:56Our Lord,
26:58Amen,
27:03May the Lord bless us,
27:05And keep us from all evil,
27:08Bringing us to everlasting life,
27:11Amen,
27:12And keep us from all evil,
27:13And keep us from all evil,
27:13And keep us from all evil,
27:13And keep us from all evil,
27:15And keep us from all evil,
27:16And keep us from all evil,
27:17And keep us from all evil,
27:17And keep us from all evil,
27:18And keep us from all evil,
27:18And keep us from all evil,
