04:37I will destroy daughter Zion, who is as delicate and defenceless as a young maiden.
04:45Kings will come against it with their armies.
04:48They will encamp in siege all the rendered.
04:51Each of them will devastate the portion assigned to him.
04:56They will say,
04:57Prepare to do battle against it.
04:59Come on, let's attack it at noon.
05:02But later they will say,
05:04Oh, too bad.
05:06The day is almost over, and the shadows are getting long.
05:10So come on, let's go ahead and attack it by night,
05:13and destroy all its fortified buildings.
05:18All of this because the Lord who rules over all has said,
05:22Cut down the trees around Jerusalem.
05:24Build up a seed wrap against its walls.
05:28This is the city which is to be punished.
05:30Nothing but oppression happens within it.
05:34As a well continually pours out fresh water,
05:38so it continually pours out wicked deeds.
05:42Sounds of violence and destruction echo through it.
05:46All I see are sick and wounded people.
05:50So take warning, Jerusalem,
05:52or I will abandon you in disgust and make you desolate,
05:56a place where no one can live.
06:00This is what the Lord who rules over all said to me.
06:04Those who remain in Israel
06:06will be like grapes thoroughly gleaned from a vine.
06:10So go over them again as though you were a grape harvester,
06:13passing your hand over the branches one last time.
06:18I answered,
06:20Who would listen if I spoke to them and warned them?
06:24Their ears are so closed that they cannot hear.
06:27Indeed, what the Lord says is offensive to them.
06:30They do not like it at all.
06:33I am as full of anger as you are, Lord.
06:37I am tired of trying to hold it in.
06:42The Lord answered,
06:44Give vent to it then on the children who play in the street
06:47and on the young men who are gathered together.
06:50Husbands and wives are to be included,
06:53as well as the old and those who are advanced in years.
06:57Their houses will be turned over to others,
07:00as will their fields and their wives,
07:02for I will unleash my power against those who live in this land,
07:06says the Lord.
07:09That is because,
07:10from the least important to the most important of them,
07:14all of them are greedy for dishonest gain.
07:17Prophet and priest alike,
07:20all of them practice deceit.
07:22They offer only superficial help
07:25for the harm my people have suffered.
07:28They say,
07:29Everything will be alright,
07:31but everything is not alright.
07:34Are they ashamed
07:35because they have done such shameful things?
07:38No, they are not at all ashamed.
07:41They do not even know how to blush.
07:44And so they will die,
07:45just like others have died.
07:47They will be brought to ruin
07:49when I punish them,
07:50says the Lord.
07:53The Lord said to his people,
07:55You are standing at the crossroad,
07:57so consider your path.
07:59Ask where the old,
08:01reliable paths are.
08:03Ask for the path that leads to blessing,
08:06and follow it.
08:07If you do,
08:08you will find rest for your souls.
08:11But they said,
08:12We will not follow it.
08:15The Lord said,
08:17I appointed prophets as watchmen
08:19to warn you,
08:19saying,
08:20Pay attention to the warning of the trumpet.
08:23But they said,
08:24We will not pay attention.
08:27So the Lord said,
08:29Hear, you nations,
08:31be witnesses,
08:32and take note of what will happen
08:33to these people.
08:35Hear this,
08:36you people of the earth.
08:37Take note,
08:38I am about to bring disaster
08:41on these people.
08:42It will come as punishment
08:43for their scheming,
08:44for they have paid no attention
08:46to what I have said,
08:47and they have rejected my law.
08:50I take no delight
08:52when they offer up to me
08:53frankincense that comes from Sheba,
08:55or sweet-smelling cane
08:57imported from a faraway land.
09:00I cannot accept
09:01the burnt offerings they bring me.
09:03I get no pleasure
09:04from the sacrifices
09:06they offer to me.
09:08So this is what the Lord says.
09:11I will assuredly
09:13make these people
09:14stumble to their doom.
09:16Parents and children
09:17will stumble and fall
09:18to their destruction.
09:20Friends and neighbours
09:21will die.
09:22This is what the Lord says.
09:25Beware,
09:26an army is coming
09:27from a land in the north.
09:28A mighty nation
09:29stirs into action
09:30in faraway parts of the earth.
09:34Its soldiers are armed
09:35with bows and spears.
09:37They are cruel
09:38and show no mercy.
09:39They sound like the roaring sea
09:42as they ride forth
09:43from their horses.
09:44Lined up in formation,
09:46like men going into battle
09:48to attack you,
09:49daughter Zion.
09:51the people cry out.
09:53We have heard reports
09:55about them.
09:55We are helpless with fear.
09:57Anguish grips us.
09:58Agony like that

10:02Do not go out
10:03into the countryside.

10:26will come against us.
10:29The Lord said to me,
10:31I have made you
10:32like a metal assayer
10:33to test my people
10:35like ore.
10:37You are to observe them
10:38and evaluate
10:39how they behave.

10:43All of them
10:44are the most stubborn
10:45of rebels.
10:47They are as hard
10:48as bronze or iron.
10:50They go about
10:51telling lies.
10:52They all deal corruptly.
10:55The fiery bellows
10:56of judgment
10:57burn fiercely
10:58but there is too much
10:59dross to be removed.
11:01The process of refining
11:03has proved useless.
11:05The wicked
11:05have not been purged.
11:08They are regarded
11:09as rejected silver
11:11because the Lord
11:13rejects them.
11:15This is the word
11:16of the Lord.
