00:43their charges against you give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others

01:58in the manner of a wicked criminal through the middle of the city from one judgment seat to another
02:05and from pilot to herod and back again amidst the noise and shouts of the people
02:11give me grace never to be overcome by the injuries of my enemies nor to be exasperated by slander

03:26by your
03:27silence the foolish curiosity of herod and who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of
03:37any miracle because he did not have his own salvation at heart and did there there in this way teach
03:44us to

04:17praise honor and glory be to you o christ who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by herod and
04:24his men of war nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as
04:30though a fool and
04:31a madman give me grace o lord to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious
04:38in the world

04:46vain honors of the world give me grace that truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness
04:55i may be as nothing in my own sight but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament

06:47oh
06:48Be thankful unto him, and speak full of his name.
06:58For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
07:08and his good and glory from generation to generation.
07:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
07:32as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end.
07:59Amen.
08:42Amen.
08:43Amen.
09:08God has spoken in his holiness.
09:12I will rejoice and delight like him, and lead of the valley of sorrow.
09:25Amen.
09:26God is mine, and the last house is mine.
09:31The most always the strength of my bed.
09:36Your love is my love, your love is my washout, all the need of will I cast out my show,
09:52give it to God, be the plan of me.
09:57And who will lead me into the strong city, who will bring me into Egypt, as the top of God,
10:14the stars of God, will just our God, our hearts and our hearts, who will love again,
10:27who will bring me into trouble, for faith is our heaven, our heaven, through God will be so great, for
10:40it is he that shall tread on the earth.
10:53Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
11:08is now and ever shall be.
11:34A reading from the Gospel according to St. Matthew, chapter 5.
11:41You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its flavour, how can it be made salty
11:46again?
11:48It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.
11:53You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.
11:59People do not light a lamp, and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light
12:05to all the house.
12:07In the same way, let your light shine before people, that they can see your good deeds and give honour
12:14to your Father in heaven.
12:18Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
12:21I have not come to abolish these things, but to fulfil them.
12:26I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter, not a stroke of a
12:31letter, will pass from the law, until everything takes place.
12:37So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches others to do so, will be called
12:43the least in the kingdom of heaven.
12:52For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and of the Pharisees,
12:58you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
13:02You have heard that it was said to an older generation,
13:05Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.
13:10But I say to you, anyone who is angry with a brother will be subject to judgment.
13:16And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says, fool, will be sent to a
13:23fiery hell.
13:25So then, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has an argument against
13:31you,
13:32leave your gift there in front of the altar.
13:35First go, and reconcile yourself to your brother, and then come and present your gift.
13:41Reach agreement quickly with your accuser, while you are on the way to court,
13:46lest he hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the warden, and you will
13:52be thrown into prison.
13:54I tell you the truth, you will never get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny.
14:01You have heard what was said.
14:03Do not commit adultery.
14:06But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman to desire her,
14:10has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
14:14If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out, and throw it away.
14:19It is better to lose one of your members, than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
14:26If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off, and throw it away.
14:31It is better to lose one of your members, than to have your whole body go into hell.
14:37It was said, whoever divorces his wife, must give her a legal document.
14:43But I say to you, that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality,
14:49makes her commit adultery.
14:51And whoever marries a divorced woman, commits adultery.
14:57This is the word of the Lord.
15:00Thanks be to God.
15:07The first verse of this reading contains a warning to us all.
15:16A Christian has to maintain in his belly the fire of his conversion.
15:22Now there is a challenge for all of us, for how many of us have grown cooler over the years.
15:29When we were first converted, we thought of nothing else but Jesus,
15:33the next prayer meeting, and our new Christian friends.
15:38We want to invite all our old friends along,
15:40to discover what we have discovered, and share this with them.
15:45We have an excitement coursing through our veins.
15:49Sadly, it grows cold as a result of time,
15:53and we need to pray that the Holy Spirit comes and relights that fire inside us,
15:58in order that we, unlike the salt that has lost its flavour,
16:02can continue in our usefulness.
16:07Jesus warned his disciples that those who lose their saltiness,
16:11are no longer of any use and will be thrown out.
16:14Let us pray that that does not happen to us,
16:18do not let our faith become a habit,
16:20but something that keeps our hearts thumping with excitement.
16:26Remember, we are the light of the world.
16:29We must allow the light of Christ to shine from us,
16:33into the darkest, dirtiest, filthiest places of the world we inhabit,
16:38reflecting His light into the smallest of callers.
16:42Let us be the moon to Christ's Son,
16:45helping banish darkness from the face of the earth.
16:49Let our lives be an example of Christ's love in action,
16:53so that others will come up and ask us what it is about us
16:57that makes us different,
16:58so that the honour is given to the Father.
17:04Christ has stern words here in His address to two groups of people.
17:10First, there is a comfort for those Jews of a more pious nature,
17:14who struggle to live according to the law.
17:18They knew that they could never achieve perfection,
17:21but perhaps they wondered if they had been wasting their time
17:25now that Jesus was amongst them,
17:26for it appeared to them that He was overturning the law.
17:32Not so, He tells them,
17:34for He had come that the Old Testament not only stood,
17:37but through Him and in Him was about to be fulfilled
17:41in the most wonderful of ways.
17:44The second group of people, however, were sorely mistaken,
17:48for they thought that the message of Jesus
17:50was that they no longer had to worry about the law,
17:53that it was going to be irrelevant,
17:56and they read into His message
17:57a license to behave as they wished.
18:01Not so, they are told,
18:03for He had come to reinforce the law
18:05and not to undermine it.
18:08Indeed, not only did He come to reinforce it,
18:11but had brought a wholly new interpretation on it.
18:18Under the Old Testament,
18:20deeds were what mattered according to the teachers of the law.
18:24Jesus tells us that this is only a small part of the truth,
18:28for it includes what is in our hearts as well.
18:33We do not need to murder somebody to kill them.
18:37In God's eyes,
18:39all that is necessary
18:40is to get angry uncontrollably with somebody.
18:45More than that,
18:46they had developed an argument
18:48that some laws were more important than others.
18:52Again, Jesus makes it clear that this is not true.
18:55And in verse 9,
18:56made it abundantly clear
18:57that even the least of the law
18:59is as important as the greatest.
19:05If we think of this for a moment,
19:06we can see the point that is being made.
19:10Yesterday,
19:10I was discussing at home
19:12the issue of bullying in school,
19:14and I explained that it was important
19:16that children clearly understood
19:18that any form of degree
19:20of bullying
19:21was unacceptable
19:23and must be met
19:24with the severest of punishment.
19:27Put simply,
19:28it is human nature
19:29to explore frontiers,
19:31and as sinners,
19:32we like to probe
19:33to see what we can get away with.
19:36The more we can get away
19:37with a little sin here and there,
19:39the more we will end up
19:41being tempted to try
19:42a bigger sin.
19:46Consider perhaps
19:47in this context
19:48Adam and Eve
19:49and the saga
19:50that unravels
19:51in Genesis 3.
19:55Was their sin
19:56so very great
19:59a stolen piece of fruit?
20:02Perhaps in the scheme of things,
20:04no, it wasn't.
20:06But it was sin.
20:07And it is only a few more lines
20:09in the Bible
20:10until we find the first murder.
20:13all sin
20:14is offensive to God.
20:16And by disobeying
20:18what appeared to be
20:19a stupid rule
20:20about a piece of fruit,
20:22Adam and Eve
20:22broke forever
20:23the harmony
20:25and uniqueness
20:26of their love for God
20:27in the same way
20:29that the smallest pebble
20:30can destroy
20:31the biggest window
20:32beyond any form
20:34of human repair.
20:38Jesus reinforced
20:39the Old Testament law
20:41and in fact
20:42extended it
20:43to include
20:44what was in our hearts
20:45as well as
20:46in our hands.
20:48The law of the New Testament
20:50the new commandments
20:51that he gave
20:52merely sit on top
20:53of the original
20:54and sum them up
20:55succinctly.
20:57What he was to go on
20:59to offer though
21:00was hope
21:01to the pious
21:01that
21:02through his passion
21:03there would be
21:04a remedy available
21:05to make them
21:06acceptable
21:06once again
21:07to God.
21:15Jesus
21:15in tackling
21:16his critics
21:18for
21:18as we have just
21:19been discussing
21:20it had been said
21:21that he had come
21:22to abolish the law
21:23and the prophets.
21:25The reality
21:26was that he had come
21:27to bring a fresh
21:28and more relevant
21:29perspective
21:30to it.
21:32The experts
21:33in the law
21:34of the Pharisees
21:35are the good example
21:36looked at the letter
21:37of the law
21:37and interpreted this
21:38according to the
21:39heritage of the
21:40Old Testament.
21:43Because they looked
21:44at the letter
21:44of the law
21:45and not the purpose
21:46or the exercising
21:47of that law
21:48they tended to
21:49miss the point
21:50and concentrated
21:51wholly on the
21:52outward show
21:53of the law
21:54not the goings-on
21:56in the hearts
21:56and minds
21:57of the people.
21:59For example
22:00in verse 21
22:01Jesus refers
22:02to the law
22:03against murder.
22:05For most of us
22:06this would appear
22:07to be cut and dry
22:09if you deliberately
22:10set out to go
22:11and kill somebody
22:11that is murder
22:13and that is the law.
22:15Jesus looked
22:16further than this
22:17and pronounced
22:18that it applied
22:19to all those
22:19who got uncontrollably
22:21angry with another
22:22or anger
22:23is what gives rise
22:24to murder.
22:25If you harbour
22:27bad thoughts
22:27against someone
22:28you may as well
22:29have murdered them.
22:32Agreed?
22:32There is a difference
22:33of degree here
22:35and I'm quite sure
22:36that if we were angry
22:37with someone
22:38for a while
22:38God will not judge us
22:40as though
22:41we had killed them.
22:44But the point is
22:45that it is the beginning
22:46of a sin.
22:48It is the opening
22:50of a window
22:51that will allow sin
22:52into our hearts.
22:56However,
22:57this is to miss the point
22:59but Jesus refers
23:00to those who go around
23:01with anger
23:01in their hearts
23:02pretending that
23:03all is well
23:04going to church
23:05to take communion
23:07going through all
23:08the motions
23:08of being a good Christian
23:09whilst at the same time
23:11having an angry heart.
23:14This is the sin
23:15that Jesus talks about
23:17for if we are angry
23:19we are in sin.
23:21First,
23:22we must resolve
23:23our anger
23:24in reconciliation
23:25and then we can
23:26go to church
23:27with clean hands
23:28and a pure heart.
23:32We are given
23:33the example
23:33of a man
23:34being taken to court
23:35over a debt
23:36and regardless
23:37of the rights
23:37and wrongs
23:38of the case
23:39it is always better
23:41to settle things
23:42before they go to court
23:43even on the steps
23:45of the court
23:45if necessary
23:47because once
23:48the matter gets
23:48in front of the judge
23:49who knows
23:50what the outcome
23:51might be.
23:53If the judge
23:54thinks that you
23:55have been wasting
23:56the court's time
23:57by being stubborn
23:58who is to say
23:59what penalties
24:00he might throw at you?
24:04Jesus then
24:04turned his teaching
24:05to the subjects
24:06of adultery
24:09but although
24:09the message given
24:10can be applied
24:11to all sin equally
24:12the subjects
24:13of adultery
24:14provides a good example.
24:17The words used
24:18by Jesus
24:19would have seriously
24:20shocked the Jews
24:22because they were
24:23completely at odds
24:24with what they were taught
24:25was the correct
24:26interpretation
24:27of the law of Moses.
24:29This allowed a man
24:31to divorce his wife
24:32for as little reason
24:33as being annoying
24:35but the divorce
24:36had to be served
24:37in writing.
24:38It could not be done
24:39verbally
24:39in anger.
24:42But it is however
24:43an abiding principle
24:45that marriage
24:45is forever
24:46not to be entered
24:48into lightly
24:49and absolutely
24:50not to be torn up
24:51because you find
24:52yourself preferring
24:53the thought
24:53of someone else.
24:56Thus
24:57adultery
24:57starts with the I
24:58in all cases
25:00and following
25:01the advice of Jesus
25:02is it best
25:03rooted out
25:03and thrown away
25:05immediately.
25:07That first thought
25:08is sufficient
25:09however innocent
25:10you try and pretend
25:11it is
25:13for it is a seed
25:14that will germinate
25:15given half a chance
25:17and as they say
25:18one thing will lead
25:19to another.
25:23But it is the same
25:24with all sin.
25:25You could argue
25:27that the difference
25:27between sin
25:29sinful thought
25:30and the sinful act
25:31is the absence
25:33of opportunity.
25:35If you long
25:36for something
25:37eventually
25:38the opportunity
25:39to fulfil
25:40that longing
25:40will present itself.
25:43We should therefore
25:44be at all times
25:45aware of the danger
25:46of sinful thought
25:48and pray
25:49that they might
25:50immediately be
25:51identified
25:51and destroyed
25:52rather than
25:54ignoring them
25:55and pretending
25:56that there is
25:57no problem.
26:03let us pray
26:05O Lord
26:06who never fails
26:08to help
26:08and govern
26:09those
26:10who you bring up
26:11in your steadfast
26:12fear and love
26:14keep us
26:15we beseech you
26:16under the protection
26:17of your good providence
26:18and make us
26:20have a perpetual
26:21fear and love
26:22of your holy name
26:24through Jesus Christ
26:26our Lord
26:27Amen
26:33May the Lord
26:34bless us
26:35and keep us
26:36from all evil
26:37bringing us
26:38to everlasting life
26:41Amen
