02:04We have been analyzing quarterback versus quarterback.

02:08We've got to go training camp practice for Munkin versus training camp practice for Kevin Stefanski.

02:27The thing that I like about special teams, there's pretty much over the course of the summer and the spring,
02:32now you're into kind of the rhythm of practice.
02:34It's very similar to Kevin's practice starts, right?
02:36You're an individual with your position coach.
02:38You go to group work, so quarterbacks work with the backs,
02:40and then they work with the tight ends receivers.
02:42That's universal for all coaches.
02:43Then he gets into a lot of 11-on-11, a walkthrough.
02:47So they're either blowing the whistle quick or they're installing, again, against coaches.
02:53Very, very simple.
02:54Then they get into a highly competitive 11-on-11, and then they get into a special teams section.
03:00Now, what makes it different is it's not just a punt team.
03:03So early in practice, this is throughout practice.
03:05Sometimes they'll do an individual part of punt where everybody's in an individual,
03:09the up backs, the linemen, whatever.
03:11So they're breaking it down individually.
03:13Then they'll do stations later on in practice where they're keeping everything in front.
03:18Fundamentals, right?
03:19Because for me, special teams are all about getting your know-what lined up
03:22and playing with your hair on fire.
03:24And that has to be done making it important.
03:27And how do you make it important?
03:28You make it important by doing it all practice.
03:30Then they break it down, so they do it individually.
03:32And then yesterday, like for example, they did everything extra point field goal.
03:36I think they're making it important.
03:38They're breaking it down, and they're stressing.
03:41You can't always win offense.
03:43You can't always win defense.
03:44You can always win special teams if you work at it.
03:47All right.
03:47Well, that's exactly why every high school coach on their way in today.
03:51When do practices start?
03:52Have they begun already?
03:53They should be.
03:53Yeah, those guys are rocking and rolling right now.
03:54Yeah, absolutely.
03:55I hope every single one of them, maybe they're on their way to the weight room early on in the
03:59morning.
03:59I hope they're listening to you convey exactly how a professional operation needs to be run.
04:06Because that's the hope, right?
04:07I mean, look, Kevin was a professional operation.
04:10And it's why they got off to the rip, roar, and start that they were able to get off to.
04:15There were some coach of the years behind that.
04:17A couple playoff berths.
04:18But in the end, like everything, everything always comes to an end.
04:22So now you make the transition into a new head coach.
04:26Coach, and so far you're saying, overall, I know you gave us a glimpse of the special teams,
04:31but you're liking what you're seeing.
04:33Yeah, this is old school stuff.
04:35So you're not getting, like, if you look at the last couple years, which, again, it's not wrong.
04:38It's different.
04:39And everybody does it their own way.
04:40But there's an old school vibe to how this goes.
04:42So, you know, old school coaches kind of reminds me of my father out there.
04:47Play football is 11 on 11.
04:48They do a ton of 11 on 11 stuff.
04:50They don't do stuff on air very rare.
04:52Why?
04:52Because you don't play football on air.
04:54They don't do stuff on bags as much as some coaches do.
04:56They're working on people.
04:58And what I mean by that is if they're blocking, they're working, somebody holding a bag.
05:02Or even if they're doing skelly and the defense is on the other field.
05:05Skelly?
05:06Which is 7 on 7, right?
05:07So even if they're doing that, there's always people standing there.
05:10There's a very old school vibe where it all leads up to 11 on 11, even yesterday.
05:15And they're grinding, right?
05:16So when you think practice is over, they're into another session.
05:19They're going to work hard.
05:20They're going to be physical in their individual drills.
05:24They're going to be physical in group.
05:25This is a much more contact-based, old school vibe to it.
05:29There's a lot of grit.
05:30They're staying out there the full time.
05:32These guys are going to be pushed.
05:33I can't wait till pads get on because that's when you can truly evaluate the offense and
05:36defensive lines.
05:37But this has been a first couple days have been very kind of rewarding if you're an old
05:43school guy.
05:43This is a team that should be ready.
05:46You think about the slow starts the Browns have had, games and seasons.
05:49This should eliminate.
05:49It doesn't mean they're going to win.
05:50It should help with the slow starts.
05:52Ken's going to hear this.
05:53I wouldn't be surprised if Ken is driving 90 miles an hour to get to the studio right
05:57now to hug Coach Risley because this is exactly the type of show.
06:02Ken wants this to be a hard-nosed, old school show.
06:05He wants the team to be hard-nosed.

06:09He always says no days off unless it's the week off that he took.

06:34You know, we were having a conversation yesterday.
06:37Padone was in and we were like, oh, you know, how is the season going to go?
06:42When are we going to hear from Andrew Barry?
06:43Last year, didn't really hear from him in the middle of the year as things were going sideways.
06:48But yesterday in camp, we heard from Andrew Barry and he, of course, was asked the big question about how
06:56the QBs are doing and when is a starter going to be named?
07:00It's important to have the quarterback starter name for the joint practice.
07:05I think it's important to have the starting quarterback name before week one.
07:08Great.
07:09That's a good start.
07:10Now, some, I've heard some coaches say week three, week five, week seven.
07:15So, week one.
07:16Coach, you're on board with that?
07:18You know, I am.
07:19And here's why.
07:19Because they are, it is a true competition.
07:23These guys have rotated.
07:24These guys, you know, once again, the quarterback tracker and everybody asking me who won day one, who won day
07:30two.
07:31There's got to be context to it because I can.
07:33No, no, no, no.
07:34Who won?

07:35We'll talk about.

07:37I'm asking who won.

07:39Talon Green and Dylan Gabriel yesterday.
07:40Oh, come on.

07:41Well, I mean, you got to have the context.
07:44And then I will give you the correct.
07:45This is what he's going to do.
07:47Talon Green won day one and day two.
07:49Talon Gabriel and Talon Green were outstanding.
07:50But once again, that's why context matters.
07:52You got to be able to talk about when they're doing things, who they're playing against, the installs that are
07:57in, passes that are being thrown, defense, et cetera.
08:00So, yeah, I think it's okay because these guys are competing.
08:03And yesterday was one of those days where learning, everybody hates it.
08:07But yesterday was a day for me.
08:08I loved it for the quarterbacks because Shador Sanders got in.
08:12Casey Concepcion got to work against Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell.
08:17Amazing opportunity.
08:18And so, I think about one route in my head right now where Casey was covered, and he's never been
08:23covered on a comeback route in his whole life.
08:25And Shador has always been able to throw that.
08:27And then they learned, hey, that's a great teaching moment.
08:29It was an incompletion.
08:30It's another level.
08:31But for me, it's one of those things they learned.
08:33So, that's an incompletion for people.
08:35That's a, oh, that was a terrible throw.
08:37For me, that was, okay, if I'm going against a guy like Denzel Ward, my route better be good.
08:42I better be on time with the football.
08:43I think it was the correct read because Ward was soft.
08:46He's just really good and closes a lot of ground.
08:48So, I think yesterday was a great learning experience.
08:51And for me, the true evaluation comes in Buffalo, when Buffalo gets up here for the joint practice and when
08:57they get to camp.
08:58And I think these guys are going to play in the preseason.
09:00And I think these, when pads go on, there's going to be some highly competitive 11-on-11s.
09:04You're going to get a feel.
09:05You're going to know somebody's going to separate themselves between these two.
09:08But all these guys are getting better, which is a credit to their coaches and to them.
09:12Like I said, there's no reason not to be optimistic right now.
09:16Really, there's not.
09:16They're working very hard, and they got some pieces on both sides of the ball.
09:19Oh, and was he taking shots at our show yesterday?
09:22Is that what that was?
09:24I think Coach is just analyzing what he's seeing and letting us know.

09:31He said there's no reason not to be optimistic.
09:34And yesterday was considered a bit of a pessimistic day.

09:41Well, if you look at it, you know, once again, I agree with you guys.
09:44If you look at, if you always go back to, that's why I love coaching.
09:48Because everything, so they've been bad since 99.
09:50And when people say, oh, this is the same old Browns, I just don't care.
09:54That has nothing to do with practice today.
09:56And that's what I love about football.
09:57You're right.
09:58Everything, people's thoughts aren't wrong.
10:00It just doesn't matter.
10:01Hopefully to a coach, it just doesn't matter when you get there today.
10:05Because that's what you can control today.
10:07And that's what I'm seeing out of these guys.
10:08There's no, like, anticipation of being bad.
10:12You know, when you hear Munkin talk, Munkin, in the course of five minutes, said winning
10:16four times.
10:16I counted yesterday during a press conference.
10:18That's good.
10:19He didn't say tanking.
10:20He said winning.
10:21Are you sure you heard that right?
10:23And rebuild.
10:23There's no rebuilding.
10:24There's no tank.
10:25Now, once again, I also agree because I'm in my own tunnel.
10:29You've got to think about the future.
10:30That's why these things have got to be collaborative.
10:32But for me, I'm winning week one.
10:34So don't trade Denzel Ward because I need him.
10:37But if you're saying we can get three picks, we're still going to be good.
10:39And I think they've balanced that pretty well, even though I didn't want to get rid of Miles.
10:43They're thinking about winning.
10:45And if you hear Munkin talk, you can't tell me he doesn't think about winning.
10:49Those guys have said winning in all their press conferences.
10:52I absolutely love what you said about, hey, the first time Casey Concepcion looks and says, oh, boy, it's not
11:00just use my speed and athleticism.
11:02Like, this is a different level.
11:04And to see that around the board, there's so many young guys on this team.
11:08It is one of the reasons why even me, who's thinking big picture, and it's just the next sentence out
11:16of my mouth after Miles Garrett is, oh, when's Denzel Ward getting traded?
11:19But then you just gave a legitimate reason on, yeah, but then Casey's going into camp, and he's not going
11:25up against Denzel Ward.
11:26And you're looking around going, well, what veterans do we have on this roster?
11:31Well, if you look at, like, for example, yesterday, they were running ones and twos.
11:34And sometimes, well, how do you get a feel?
11:36How do you judge these guys?
11:37Well, I was watching yesterday, and when they're working with the twos right now, well, the two receivers are Casey
11:42Concepcion right now and Denzel Boston.
11:44Right now.
11:44No, I'm saying, though, even, so, whether it's the top two guys or the next two guys, like, said Tillman
11:51has made plays in the NFL.
11:53Isaiah Bond has made plays in the NFL.
11:55Jamari Thrash has had a good camp.
11:56So, you're able to evaluate a quarterback, even if he's not running with the ones.
12:00So, let's say Casey and Denzel won.
12:03Well, then you're working with Jerry Judy.
12:04Then you're working with Isaiah Bond.
12:06So, you're able to evaluate players because you're stacking the roster.
12:10You're getting talent.
12:11Talent wins.
12:11If you're trying to evaluate people, you've got to have players at all positions so they can get a look.
12:16So, Casey, he wasn't out.
12:17He didn't look outclassed.
12:19He didn't look like he couldn't compete.
12:20He just looked like, oh, this is the NFL.
12:22Yeah.
12:23Now, I've got to make sure my route is on point.
12:25I've got to – quarterback Shador has to go, you know what, I've got to make sure I'm on time.
12:30Shador did – he threw the ball away three times yesterday.
12:34Those are incompletions.
12:35They were good plays.
12:36That could save the day.
12:37An incompletion can absolutely save the day.
12:40Then he threw a ball that – he threw a great ball to Harold Fannin that Harold Fannin dropped on
12:44the sideline.
12:45That's an incompletion.
12:46Well, again, now you say to Harold Fannin, you've got to make that catch what you will.
12:49That's why the completions have to be looked within context because of who they're going against.
12:54The offense with Shador yesterday had a really tough day because the defense was really good.
12:58That's why he had a tough day.
12:59It wasn't all on him.
13:00It's a team game.
13:01They've kind of flipped one's the first day with one, one's the second day.
13:05Yeah, so they're getting equal reps with everybody, and everybody's kind of seeing – you're seeing Denzel Ward.
13:10You're seeing – that secondary yesterday locked that offense up.
13:15That was just the reality of it.
13:17That doesn't mean it'll happen every day.
13:18That means they go and watch some film and say, we've got to be better because these guys are good.
13:22That's how you get better.
13:22It is interesting when you pose the question to Browns fans, when you hear – because somebody's winning every day.
13:29At least that's the hope.
13:30Somebody is winning every day.
13:32And when you're hearing, hey, that's secondary, clamp down the receivers, you could do glass half empty on that.
13:38You could do glass half full.
13:39That's just the reality of camp, and that's why you want to see this thing progress.
13:43You want to see them get into 11-on-11s and get serious, and then eventually your joint practices where
13:47we're all unified.
13:48We get to turn our nastiness against another team, not just seeing the same guys every day.
13:54Andrew Barry pressed a little bit on how the QB competition is going.
13:58We know last year, I think we'd all say, fair, the term unfair, ridiculous, poorly planned.
14:10Poorly named.
14:11I still don't get what last year was.
14:13It seemed like there were dueling competitions.
14:16Lance Reisland is in studio.
14:17He's been at practice.
14:19He was at all the practices last year.
14:20Like, comparing – no two scenarios are going to be the same.
14:26But the fact that they had four guys they wanted to ultimately take a look at last year, that was
14:31weird.
14:32That was bizarre to me.
14:34This year, it seems a little bit more well-rooted in, hey, it's one or the other.
14:41Who's going to be the starting quarterback by week one?
14:43Well, and the thing that I would say is that I never understood the angle of fair.
14:49These guys are getting paid a lot of money.
14:51It's not fair.
14:52When you – yesterday you saw opportunities.
14:54You know, Munkin comes out and says, hey, this guy's going to get 55%.
14:58This guy's going to get 30%.
14:59This guy's going to get 17%.
15:00He has all these numbers.
15:01Well, if you're only getting five to seven snaps, then you better maximize those snaps.
15:05Fair is just something that football – you know, that's – this isn't high school football or even – you
15:09know, it's – this is the idea.
15:10These guys are – it's a job, and when you're on the field, you have to produce.
15:14And, like, last year, I went to – I went to Philadelphia.
15:17I was there for the joint practice.
15:18Joe Flacco should have been the starter.
15:20Joe Flacco was the best quarterback after the joint practice in Philly, and it wasn't close.
15:26Right.
15:27I'd wager to say it's still probably not close.
15:29Joe Flacco was here today.
15:31He's probably the best quarterback, right?
15:33So, for me, that was like – and people were like, it wasn't fair.
15:36Now, for – I thought it was unfair to Joe Flacco to say, well, you don't need the reps.
15:41You're a veteran.
15:42It's a new season.
15:43You need all those reps.
15:44So, I think just the –
15:45I got caught up in that.
15:46I'll be honest.
15:46I probably said that.
15:48I'm like, hey, that's great.
15:48You have a veteran here.
15:49You got to get the reps.
15:51You got to – you got to have –
15:51But see, that's what's crazy about Joe Flacco is you trade him midweek to Cincinnati,
15:55and then he starts and puts on a show, you know, fairly quickly.
15:59You know, Phillip Rivers, you know, the veteran comes in – was it – was it last year or the
16:04year before?
16:04I know my years are –
16:06Last year.
16:06It was last year after how many years on the beach?
16:09Four years off.
16:09Yeah, he just shows up and, you know, was he great?
16:12No.
16:13But was he still better, like, markedly than anything they had had?
16:17He has two grandkids.
16:19Well, I will say this.
16:20So, when you look –
16:20So, when you look at those two quarters, that's a great –
16:23Here's why.
16:24Because, first of all, they had – their personnel is better on offense on those two teams.
16:28Secondly, in football, there's a lot – there's a lot to do with, like, all the different concepts and all
16:33the –
16:33They're really – if you think about, like, a pass game, there's a high and a low.
16:37There's an in, there's an out.
16:38So, at every level of football, there's certain plays.
16:41That's why you can go in and you can say, hey, we're running a smash concept or we're running mesh
16:46or we're running these plays that we all run at every level.
16:49It's name different, but it's the same stuff.
16:51So, when – it's like – here's a great example.
16:53It's like Deshaun Watson.
16:54Why would he be leading?
16:54He's been in the league 10 years and it's a new offense.
16:56And he probably understands the concepts a little bit more than Shador before they even get on the field.
17:01By default, yeah.
17:02That's a great thing.
17:02So, like, those quarterbacks coming in and having success, well, first of all,
17:06Flacco's flinging it up to Jamar Chase and Higgins and that tells you it's a team sport.
17:11There's also – you know, when these guys are brought in, they're saying, all right,
17:14here's the concepts we all know.
17:16Here's what we call them, right?
17:17You know what a corner route is.
17:20You know what a curl is.
17:21Here's how we call it.
17:23We've read curl flat.
17:24We've read smash.
17:24We've done this our whole lives.
17:26That's why they can have success, even coming off retirement, coming off being traded quickly.
17:32Because, once again, football – coaching, I don't want to say coaching is never overrated.
17:36The best coaches have the best players.
17:38That's the reality of it.
17:40I got to say, after what I saw last year out of Phillip Rivers,
17:42I think every Hall of Fame quarterback or borderline Hall of Fame quarterback,
17:46they should have to do what Phillip Rivers did just so we can see,
17:49just to settle arguments at the bar.
17:51Like, could Tom Brady at 50 still go out there and play competitive football?
17:57I think he probably could.
17:58I think they should all have to come – you know, Ben Roethlisberger is the one I really want to
18:02see.
18:02Because Big Ben was looking horrendous towards the end of his Pittsburgh Steelers.
18:08But he's a Hall of Famer, though.
18:10Like, Rivers is on the line, right?
18:13Is he in or is he out?
18:14Coming back, I was always, he's an out guy.
18:16Yeah.
18:17Did he play his way back in?
18:18He kind of put his way in.
18:20Like, Eli needs to go and throw in six games for the Giants or whatever, just for –
18:25Amazing.
18:26Well, Eli could probably go on another playoff tear.
18:28That was what he was known for.
18:30He had a, you know, good NFL career and then two playoff runs.
18:35He played like the New York Knicks did last year.
18:37Like, went on these all-time runs.
18:39Meanwhile, we put it off enough, 30 minutes, and I don't want you to dance around it.
18:46I don't want you to be worrying about upsetting the factions of the fan base.
18:51I want you to put down your computer, take off the YouTube comment section, get off of social media,
18:59and I want you to weigh in.

19:31Now, that being said, we'll see what happens when pads go on.

19:35And you hope that competition is right going into the season.
19:37And the way that if Shador is behind, the way he closes the gap is –
19:42because the argument I've heard is that Deshaun doesn't play well in games,
19:45but he plays well in practice.
19:47Then Shador, which I've seen now, then he's got to close the gap in practice.
19:50So if Deshaun doesn't produce, you're not playing Shador because Deshaun is playing –
19:57you know, not playing great in the game.
19:59You're playing Shador because he's earned it.
20:01And that's what these – that's what kind of where Munkin's at right now,
20:04in my opinion.
20:05But if you're asking me right now, they start tomorrow, then I'm going to
20:07Deshaun Watson.
20:08And I'm going to Deshaun Watson because he has experience.
20:11And that's the reality of it.

21:27Well, if you ask me after yesterday's practice, this is why context matter.
21:31Dylan Gabriel and Taylor Green were the best two quarterbacks yesterday, without question.
21:35Why?
21:35Because of who they played against and the reps they took.
21:39They weren't playing against Delmon's award.
21:41They weren't – there's context matters when you're doing these things.
21:43And that being said, new offense, new coach, I'm going with DeSean Watson until proven otherwise.
21:47My goal was to win week one, not to – not to build towards the future.
21:52That's the GM's job.
21:53I got to win week one.
21:55I haven't been out there, so I don't know.
21:57What's – what's the difference?
21:59What's the thing that's setting DeSean apart right now?
22:01There's not a lot.
22:02That's why the question's kind of tough, because right now you're not getting enough –
22:06there's not enough live action, even when they're rushing.
22:10Because right now, you've guys been around football, all right?
22:13So when you're around football and you have no pads on, it's hard to pass protect.
22:17It's hard to block Mason Graham if you can't get into his chest.
22:20And right now they can't get into his chest because there's no pads on, right?
22:24So that means his pass rush, he's just blowing everything up.
22:27So there's no time for the quarterbacks.
22:29These young receivers are going against veterans, right?
22:32And for me, that's a great thing.
22:34Now, it looks terrible right now, but I guarantee you in that film room last night,
22:39KC and Shador were going, you know what, we can do this.
22:41We just got to make sure we're sharp.
22:43Because I guarantee you their whole lives, that's been an automatic, easy pitch and catch.
22:47So there is not a lot of separation.
22:49I would say the separation is the same as it was going into camp,
22:54because they haven't done enough to separate themselves.
22:56There's been no pads on.
22:58And when you have no pads on, everything – you know, football's not played in underwear,
23:01and that's what they're doing right now.
23:02The first couple days are football and underwear.
23:04My dad always says, you don't win in underwear.
23:06Yeah, they tried in underwear league with the females a few years ago.
23:09Yeah, Cleveland had a team.
23:10Yeah, I remember watching substantial highlights of that while the show was going on.
23:17I might have to pull some of those up right now,
23:18because I've got to see if it still holds true.
23:21Some of my observations from those years, we'll have those on in the background.
23:25You're right.
23:26It is – obviously, we're having some fun.
23:28Yeah, yeah.
23:29Because there's no way Todd Munkin would need to make a decision now.
23:33And he's looking at very different things than we are.
23:36We are not in those meetings.
23:37We're not privy to the command of the offense.
23:41Are they able to process it all?
23:44Are they able to – the reads part of this – like, I keep seeing some videos.
23:47And I think I've just – like, younger me would have been all over these clips.
23:51But there's one clip of Shador where he doesn't get rid of the football.
23:54And people are like, dude, you've got to get rid of the football.
23:57And I'm like, well, I don't know.
23:58I don't know what the drill is.
23:59I don't know what the last resort is or what Munkin is who had just maybe whispered to them
24:06before they went on the field.
24:07This is a yin and the yang.
24:08There's a defense that you're also trying to evaluate on all of these plays.
24:12So I'm not getting it carried away with any of that stuff.
24:15And I'm certainly not going to get carried away with a couple of highlights here or there.
24:20Mechanics-wise, like, I'm hoping both these guys are getting better.
24:23So the one part of, like, the Deshaun Watson, hey, he's got 10 years with the vocabulary,
24:28the language of an NFL offense.
24:31He's had so many different OCs and quarterback coaches come in and come out.
24:34So it stands to reason that he might be ahead on that stuff.
24:38But I also think it's tough for a guy who's been in the league 10 years
24:41to materially change his fundamentals, right?
24:44So that's where maybe Shador might have an edge is that he has the capacity
24:49to maybe learn something and adapt quicker at this stage.
24:53Well, you know, and it's a new offense.
24:54So to say that can't happen with Deshaun, you know, I think for him it's been more about health.
24:59And, you know, sometimes when you're not working on your mechanics,
25:01you get to see what's in front of you a little better.
25:03But, yeah, the mechanics that you see out of Shador have been excellent.
25:07And you brought up a really good point because I've had a number of people reach out to me
25:10and say he's holding on to the ball too long.
25:12There have been a number of drills that I have heard the quarterback coaches
25:18and the Munkins say, extend the play, right?
25:21So what they're trying to – if you look at this players over plays,
25:24Munkin will tell you, and I've heard him say it multiple times,
25:26a lot of this offense is extending plays, throwing the ball vertically.
25:30And they have to do those things.
25:32So when you're seeing those things – now, it also is a situation.
25:35If it's first down and 10, throw the ball away.
25:37If it's third down and four, try to make a play.
25:40It's all situational.
25:41Can't look too much into good or bad.
