00:00I think what I'm most fearful about is just losing my curl pattern or a shift in the texture
00:06of my hair just because it has happened before.
00:09Hi, I'm Karima and today I'm getting a copper curly cut.
00:13The look that I'm going for today is just something a little sun-kissed and completely
00:17opposite than what I've always had.
00:20My hair is the first thing that people typically notice about me.
00:23I actually used to straighten my hair a lot up until I was in high school, but I played
00:28water polo and I swam so it damaged my hair.
00:31My hair would just look really fried from all the chemicals and heat and everything.
00:35So I kind of just like stopped doing it and it turned out to just be something that everyone
00:42really loves.
00:43I've never had a color copper before.
00:46There was one time where I did have red hair which was only because I was supposed to be
00:51blonde and there was like a little hiccup along the way.
00:54My hair tends to be a little overwhelming for people sometimes because it's so big.
00:57So I'm excited to go see a curl specialist for the first time.
01:02Hi, I'm Melaina and I do hair at Salon Kazumi in Beverly Hills.
01:05I specialize in color corrections, curly color, and blonding.
01:08I love curly hair.
01:09I think it shows off everybody's uniqueness and I think everybody that has curly hair should
01:13embrace it.
01:14Curly hair is everything.
01:15I think we should take the length off a little bit right here and just kind of round you
01:18out and give you some nice layers.
01:20I'm really excited about having some like definition to my natural texture.
01:24Alright, we'll get started.
01:26Yay!
01:27Today I will give Karima a natural sun kissed copper color on her curly hair and I will
01:31give her a curly cut in style.
01:33First I'm going to cut Karima's hair to her desired length.
01:38I will give her a dry cut so I can see the shape as it is in the mirror before
01:42we do any
01:43coloring and before we do any styling.
01:47Then I'm going to cut her layers into a round shape and I'm going to give her bangs just above
02:02her eyebrow.
02:17I'm going to walk through and make sure that all of her ends are looking clean and fresh.
02:23And now time for the color.
02:29For Karima I wanted to give her something really natural but still something that felt
02:33different.
02:34So the copper tone that we chose really complimented her skin tone but also popped on her natural
02:38color.
02:41The chemistry behind coloring hair is the same whether it's curly or straight.
02:45So if you know how to color straight hair you can apply those same rules to curly hair
02:49and you will get the same results.
02:50It's really nothing to be afraid of.
03:01I will section her hair into three sections.
03:05Starting from the nape working up the head I'm going to take straight sections.
03:10Doing maximum teasing and just painting the color on her ends.
03:18I'm going to do the same technique all the way through the head.
03:29Once I get towards the bang area and the front of her head I'm going to bring the color up
03:35a little bit higher so that it creates a balayage blend.
03:41Next I'm going to place her back foils in the dryer for about 10 minutes.
03:45Once those are done I'm going to put the dryer right on top of her head for the front foils.
03:51Once everything is done processing I'm going to rinse and I'm going to start the detangling
03:56process.
04:01I'm going to towel dry the hair slightly and coat the hair with a deep conditioning treatment
04:05for hydration.
04:09Starting from the nape of the head I'm going to take small sections and I'm going to start
04:12detangling all of the teasing that I did with the color.
04:17For all curly clients I typically use a leave-in conditioner and then I base their styling products
04:21off of the texture of the hair so whether they're fine and curly or coarse and curly and the coil
04:26pattern of their curls.
04:35I'm going to use a Denman brush to make sure that the product is brushed through thoroughly
04:39and that her curls are intact before drying.
04:44Making sure that the head is saturated with water I'm going to take small sections and
04:50coat the hair with my WeeDad primer, my WeeDad gel and my WeeDad styling cream.
04:56Next I'm going to use the dryer and diffuser hair until completely dry.
05:10Karima's curls were really tight, I wanted to loosen them up a little bit so I used a
05:13little bit of a hair oil to kind of pull those curls out and create more of a shaggy textured
05:18look.
05:20And now time for the big reveal.
05:22Okay, are we ready for the big reveal?
05:24I'm ready.
05:25Okay.
05:28Oh my gosh, that's so cute!
05:37I feel ecstatic about my hair.
05:39My hair feels super healthy and actually feels a little bit better than it did before I had
05:44it colored so I'm pretty impressed with that.
05:47It was great seeing her reaction.
05:49I could tell that she felt different but in the best way.
05:51She really felt like herself and she was really excited to see her new hair.
05:54The final result was amazing.
05:56I think it totally complimented her personality and her skin tone and it was super fun for
05:59her.
06:00I know that it was very different for her but it still kept her feeling like herself.
06:03I love the overall color.
06:05It's kind of like a little bit lighter of a sun like copper version so I feel like it's
06:10something that I haven't really seen too much of and unique to me.
06:15Karima was a really great client because her natural base was a light natural level six
06:18so it was really easy to just use color.
06:21So we didn't have to do any bleaching for her services which kept her hair intact and kept
06:25her curls really healthy.
06:26For the cut we focused mostly on taking length off and then giving her a round shape.
06:30She really likes a lot of texture and a lot of movement so we kept short layers around
06:34the face and around the top part of her hair and took a little bit of length off to give
06:39her a round shape.
06:40The whole transformation was three hours total.
06:42Before today I didn't know that I really had tight curls or ringlets so she really showed
06:47me how to like define my hair and how to still have the same volume but yet curl definition
06:51that I'm looking for so I'm excited to use that in my curl routine in the future.
06:56To maintain curls it's definitely important to use products like Olaplex and professional
07:01products that are going to maintain moisture and be safe for color.
07:04She can technically go about a year or so without touching her color at all or if she
07:08prefers she can just let her hair grow out completely before she retouches.
07:11I definitely feel better about like how my hair feels and I'm excited about my birthday
07:18coming up and just being able to come into like a new chapter and just enjoy the summer.
