00:29that I was going to dye my hair purple.
00:31So naturally, I went ahead and processed it blonde
00:34in order to dye it purple.
00:35It all fell out as it goes.
00:39You know, after taking care of your hair,
00:40you realize how resilient it can be,
00:42especially as a woman of color and a black woman.
00:45And I thought, like, now it's kind of time to be playful.
00:47Like, I know how to take care of it.
00:48Let's do something new.
00:52Honestly, I look back at pictures of when I was last blonde,
00:54and I just feel like I even look like the most me.

01:17I love doing it because I feel like people with curly or coily hair
01:20feel like there's limits on what they can do with their hair.
01:24But honestly, like, the sky's the limit.

02:02So the last time I went blonde, I really felt like myself.

02:09So I want to do blonde today, maybe give it a little press,

02:17Let's get started.
02:18So the first step is that we're going
02:20to go in with a single process color.
02:24Right now, I'm mixing the color.
02:27I'm going to apply this color to her roots first.
02:31And then we're going to apply the other bowl
02:34to her mid-shaft and ends.
02:39So a single process is basically a permanent color
02:42that's applied all over your hair.
02:46It lifts your hair about two to four levels lighter.
02:50So right now, we're going for something
02:52that's kind of like a medium, say, like a medium blonde
02:56to like a light brown.
03:00So now that you're processed, we're
03:02going to get you shampooed, conditioned,
03:05and then we're going to blow dry you for your highlights.
03:07Amazing.
03:09You have to be really gentle when you're
03:11coloring curly or coily hair.
03:14A lot of people that aren't versed in coloring curly or coily hair,
03:20they feel like they have to do the most.
03:22So they'll like throw the 40 volume on, throw the 50 volume on.
03:26And actually, it's the opposite.
03:28You have to kind of take it slow.
03:30You have to be more gentle.
03:31Our hair is a lot more fragile.
03:34So the color is looking amazing.
03:37We're gorgeous.
03:37So now we're going to get you blow dried for your highlights.
03:42OK.
03:42First, I'm going to spray some heat protectant spray on your hair,
03:46and then we'll get you blow dried.
03:47Amazing.
03:50So now we're going to get you highlighted.
03:53So I'm going to be using lightener to get those beautiful blonde pieces
03:59that we talked about earlier.
04:00And I'm going to start in the back.
04:03Then we're going to move to the left.
04:04Then we're going to move to the right.
04:06And then we'll probably rinse you out that way, too.
04:13So one of our missions at the Coily Collective
04:16was to kind of spread the good word of wearing your hair natural,
04:20being comfortable with it.
04:26So now you're going to process for a little bit.
04:29And then after that, we're going to rinse everything out
04:31and get you toned.
04:32Beautiful.

04:37So you're rinsed, shampooed.
04:40And now we are going to do the last step for the color.
04:43We're going to do a set of glosses.
04:46One is going to tone your blonde, a nice kind of like golden tone.
04:50And then the next one is going to just kind of shadow your roots.
04:54So it kind of gives a seamless transition
04:56transition between the single process and the highlights.

05:07Now you're washed, conditioned, and we're ready to get you cut.
05:12The way that we like to trim at the Coily Collective is that we like to blow dry your hair
05:16first
05:17with a comb attachment.
05:18OK.
05:19And then we like to trim from there.
05:21We prefer this to doing a traditional curly cut because traditionally, with a curly cut,
05:27you don't get to see the ends because it's curly.
05:30So everything looks better when it's curly.
05:32Right.
05:32When it's straight, you get to see what's dry and what really needs to come off.
