00:00I'm most fearful about just a big change.
00:04I've always kind of had relatively the same look.
00:07For most of my life, it's always the straight black hair
00:11for the most part.
00:12And I think it's just time to get out of my comfort zone,
00:15finally, and do something wild and fun.
00:19Hi, I'm Kaylee, and today I'm getting a big chop
00:22and coloring it turquoise.
00:24Inspiration for this look is to kind of look a little bit
00:27more like a mermaid.
00:28I've always loved mermaids all my life.
00:31And I think that going for a much more jewel tone, teal,
00:36turquoise, is going to transition really well from going
00:41into the fall and kind of standing out against all
00:44of these more neutral brown, orangey tones.
00:47And then going into these cooler winter months,
00:50I think it'll look beautiful.
00:52My hair journey started when I was in fifth grade,
00:56and I was watching the news with my parents,
00:59and they did a segment on this little girl who looked to be
01:02about my age who was also donating her hair.
01:05I asked my parents if that was something that I could do.
01:08And so I grow up my hair every two years now after a big chop,
01:13and I donate it to Lots of Love.
01:15I think that this is probably going to be the eighth donation.
01:20I don't have a problem with my current look per se,
01:23but I think that, like, it's not a reflection truly of how I feel.
01:29I am most excited that I'm finally going to get this mermaid-y look
01:34that I've always seen other people do and admired on them
01:38and can finally just see it applied to myself.
01:42Hi, my name is Danny Moon,
01:43and I'm a hair colorist and owner of Hair Los Angeles.
01:46So I'm most known for my creative, unique tones
01:49that I create for my clients.
01:50I like to give them the most beautiful
01:53and multi-dimensional tone for them.
01:57So I just got back from New York Fashion Week,
01:59and I had a blast.
02:00So check out my page, at Major Moon,
02:03you'll see some of the great artists that I got to work with,
02:06Addison Rae, Kristen Stewart, and Kid Cudi.
02:09Today I'm going to give Kaylee a big chop
02:11and then create this emerald turquoise hair.
02:15Hey, what's up? I'm Danny.
02:17Great to have you at Hair Los Angeles.
02:19What are we doing today?
02:20We are going to do a big 12-inch chop and color it turquoise.
02:25I have always kind of wanted, like, a green,
02:27green, but I wanted more, like, a green-blue
02:31because I like how that fades versus doing, like, a green-yellow.
02:35So I was thinking more of a teal-turquoise color.
02:38I love those colors for you because they look good on your skin.
02:41Like, the saturated, like, teal or turquoise is very,
02:45you know, it's very rich.
02:46It maintains the color, and it's almost as low maintenance
02:51as possible when it comes to these, like, vivid colors.
02:54So what I'll do is section your hair out in fours,
03:00and then we'll start cutting mini ponytails.
03:03Okay. Sounds good.
03:05All right. Let's do it.
03:08So I pull out the tape measure,
03:10and I section her hair in four different sections,
03:13so I get a nice, even cut,
03:15and there's no mistakes when measuring and cutting this hair.
03:30What I'm going to do at this point
03:32is I'm going to do a test strand in the back.
03:35I'm going to start with 10 minutes
03:37just to see how much color is on her hair.
03:41While I start to kind of dry cut around her face,
03:45just so I see exactly what the hair is going to do.
03:49I like to do this dry cutting because it just moves different
03:52when it's been already, like, lived in for a second.
04:02Starting in the back, I bleach halfway up the head.
04:19And then my other assistant will start bleaching to the left of me,
04:23so we meet up at the same time.
04:26By having multiple people bleaching at the same time,
04:29this keeps the hair in the best shape possible.
04:31Hair integrity is the most important thing to me
04:34when creating these unique, custom, creative colors.
04:40The hair has given us information.
04:42The roots are going to be yellow,
04:43and she has leftover color in the end,
04:45which is ending up to be red.
04:50So what we'll do is we'll pull all the foils out
04:53all at the same time,
04:54so we can shampoo, condition,
04:57and start over, focusing only on these red ends.
05:01So when I started bleaching her hair after 15 minutes,
05:04I noticed that there was a box dye situation going on.
05:09Once we are done bleaching,
05:10I put the Schwarzkopf color remover on there,
05:13just to kind of, like, scrub off whatever was there
05:15without having to do an intense bleach out.
05:29We're gonna end up bleaching these red ends
05:31to a place just where I know it'll be light enough
05:35to take the emerald teal green that we create for it.
05:49I pull out four colors, maybe five colors,
05:52just to start creating these unique tones.
05:54I want this to be original.
05:57I do a test round to see how porous the hair is,
06:00and it takes exactly how I thought it was gonna take,
06:02so I begin applying color.
06:04I start at the top,
06:06just so I see how the original tone frames her face
06:09and complements her skin tone.
06:11As I begin to mix the next batch,
06:13I mix it slightly different,
06:15just so there's dimension,
06:16just so there's a lot of movement happening
06:19when all the hair comes together.
06:21So I go through the hair, saturating, wiping,
06:24making sure that the hair is taking everything
06:26it needs to take.
06:27Once that's complete,
06:29I let it process for 15 minutes.
06:32For the shampoo, I'm using the Virtue Full Shampoo,
06:35just for that extra moisture and that alpha keratin kick.
06:39We're just going straight in,
06:41and we're catching up on the cut.
06:43Texturizing, layering,
06:45measuring, exactly how we want it.
06:49Once that's complete, we add our products.
06:53Starting with the Virtue leave-in.
06:56I love Virtue products for the reason is that
06:58they have an alpha keratin protein in it
07:00that heals the hair as you use it.
07:02I layer all my products just to get it exactly where I want it,
07:06and I start blowing this beautiful, majestic,
07:09emerald-teel green hair out.
07:11Just when I get it exactly where I want it,
07:14I finish up and I get ready to turn the chair
07:17and show Kaylee what we made for her.
07:19All right, ready for the new you?
07:21Yes.
07:22Here we go.
07:25Open your eyes.
07:27Oh my God.
07:31Oh my God.
07:31So gorgeous.
07:32It's beautiful.
07:34Oh my God.
07:35I love it.
07:39You're so welcome.
07:41It's so vibrant, and there's so much depth to it,
07:44and it's just absolutely gorgeous.
07:46I did not think that we could get here from the dark hair that I had.
08:01I love it.
08:02I feel amazing and so confident with this.
08:05You know, certain changes that you might make, it's like,
08:08oh, maybe you have to take some baby steps into getting used to it.
08:11No, like, this feels right to me.
08:13This feels like exactly what I've always wanted.
08:16Some people, when they have a new look, it's like,
08:18oh, I have to get used to it.
08:20This feels natural for me.
08:22Seeing Kaylee's reaction in the mirror, you know, never gets old.
08:26It's always nice to see somebody see themselves in a way for the first time.
08:31It's exciting.
08:32It's heartfelt.
08:33It's sincere.
08:33You know, it makes it all worth it.
08:36We were laughing and joking the whole time.
08:38I'm really stoked every time we get to do these transformations,
08:40because they're just so fun.
08:42We chopped off 12 inches, I do believe that we agreed on,
08:47but with the extra styling and, you know, just cleaning up, I'm sure we probably got a few more.
08:53I feel like he did an amazing job with this color.
08:56There's just so much depth.
08:58It's not just a single flat color, and it's just so unique.
09:02It feels expensive and rich and just absolutely gorgeous, and I love it.
09:08When it comes to taking care of your creative color, I recommend you shampoo as least as possible.
09:14I say once every three days. If you can go six days, even better.
09:18If you have to shampoo your hair, place shampoo around your hairline and on your crown,
09:22and rinse it thoroughly. Try not to lather, and this will keep your color as vibrant as possible.
09:29I definitely am going to come back as recommended by Dani to make sure I get my touch up.
09:37When creating these creative colors, what I have in mind is how expensive can I make it look?
09:43How luxurious can it be? So I'm on top of it at all times, me and my team.
09:49If the bleach is done on a strand of hair, we're pulling it off.
09:52When it comes to the integrity of the hair, I know for a fact that it's in the best shape
09:58possible.
09:59I don't just color hair. I'm also proud to announce that my second collaboration with Reebok,
10:04my terrycloth gradient collection, is out now.
10:08I am so excited to donate my locks. I've got my little goodie bag here to take home,
10:14and I'm just really happy to know that, you know, I feel super good in my hair,
10:20and I can do the same for somebody else. So I really hope that locks of love will make good
10:26use of this for a child in need.
10:29I definitely am interested in seeing how this fades, and playing around with other shades of blue and green to
10:37start off.
10:38But I definitely can see myself in the next big chop probably doing drastic, wild, fun color.
10:45I don't know. We'll see what's next.
