00:00I'm a little scared to get my hair professionally colored the first time because I don't know
00:05what the best color is for like my skin tone.
00:08And so I guess like my biggest fear is that it may not turn out the way I want.
00:13Hi I'm Rebecca and today I'm getting a Sarah Hyland inspired look.
00:18I've been through a lot of transformation this past year.
00:21Got a new job, got out of a bad relationship, moved to a new apartment with all new people.
00:26So it would be super nice to get my hair professionally done.
00:28I feel like getting a new hair transformation but kind of like really feeling I'm on a new
00:33path to like better change.
00:36So the inspiration for this look is one of Sarah Hyland's looks, kind of this like darkish
00:41reddish brown color.
00:42It looks very polished, very clean cut.
00:45Growing up as a child I had like one haircut and it was just like short with bangs.
00:51I never colored it because my parents never wanted me to color my hair.
00:54I remember one time I had this rebel phase where I like dyed a streak of my hair orange
00:59and I thought it was like super cool.
01:01My mom, she freaked when she saw me use box dye and dye it.
01:05And then throughout college I just like wanted to transform my hair a bit but I never knew
01:09how much of a transformation I wanted to do so I always like did it myself.
01:11I've always gotten like a box bleach and run my fingers with the bleach through my hair
01:17thinking that I could great get these best like highlights or great balayage and it's
01:23always turned out horribly.
01:24The hair you see right now is bleach that I put in my own hair.
01:29I definitely think that a new look could just elevate my self confidence.
01:34I just have not been happy with how I look and I've been wanting to change it for a while.
01:40Hi.
01:41Hi.
01:42I'm Nikki.
01:42I'm Nikki Lee, co-owner of 901 Salon and In Common Beauty.
01:46Being co-owner of 901 Salon is amazing and also very, very hard but super rewarding.
01:55What I'm best known for is color.
01:57I love doing blondes and a good transformation.
02:00Some of my most favorite color work has been done on Emma Roberts, Selena Gomez, Sarah Hyland
02:07and Hilary Duff just to name a few.
02:09So the celebrity look that inspired Rebecca for today was the Sarah Hyland Winter Copper
02:16Brown which honestly is perfect for Rebecca.
02:19So we'll be able to gloss you all over so that you'll have dimensions but get your hair
02:24back shiny and healthy I think is most important.
02:28Your hair is going to be like brand spanking new.
02:31I'm going to go get some color mix and then we'll get started.
02:34How's that sound?
02:35Awesome.
02:36Yeah.
02:38I'm so excited to get my hair done by Nikki Lee.
02:41Like she has done Sarah Hyland's hair.
02:43I saw her do Hilary Duff's hair.
02:45Like, oh my gosh, she's so great with color.
02:48I'm super excited.
02:50I'm going to begin Rebecca's hair by doing highlights first.
02:53I've used a lightener with 20 volume.
02:56That's an in-between kind of developer so that I don't want her highlights to lift too light.
03:04For me, hair is my self-confidence.
03:07If I have good hair, it doesn't matter if I'm wearing sweats, I have no makeup on.
03:10I feel really good about myself.
03:13One time I had a bad haircut and I put my hair up and did not see anyone for like
03:19three months.
03:23Now that all of her highlights are in, I'm going to go in-between the foils with her base color.
03:30I'm using L'Oreal Anoa, like a copper brown, and I'm using a 10 volume.
03:35I don't want her root to look like a hot root.
03:37I just want it shifted and warmed up a bit.
03:43Now that I have her base color on, now we need to lift the mid-shafts a bit.
03:48I'm going to use the same formula, but I'm upping my developer to a 20 volume because the mid-area
03:56doesn't have heat from her scalp.
03:58So I need it to lift so that it color balances and the color can be even.
04:04So now we've applied the mid-shaft.
04:07Everything is going to process for 30 minutes.
04:13Now my assistant Zakiya is going to take her back to the bowl and get everything shampooed out.
04:20Now that we have her all rinsed out and combed out, we're going to begin the toning process.
04:25I like to do what I call a tap and tone.
04:29So I mix a darker color to blend out the highlight so that it doesn't look stripey and that her
04:37color will feel like almost one color with dimension.
04:43And then I'm going to be using a level 7 copper brown gloss all over just to add richness and
04:51shine.
04:52This is all going to process for about 15 minutes.
04:58Now we're going to rinse this out really, really well.
05:01No shampoo.
05:02And then we're going to be applying the Crystal Cashmere Treatment by In Common.
05:07This treatment is going to lock and seal everything in and add shine and health back to her hair.
05:16Now that I've towel dried her hair, I'm going to spray in In Common's Magic Mist.
05:21It's a leave-in detangler. It's literally dreams.
05:25And then I'm also going to apply In Common's new oil that no one knows about but you guys.
05:31And now for the final step of styling, we're going to give her a voluminous blowout and some beautiful waves.
05:43And get ready for the big reveal.
05:50Okay, girl, it's time for your reveal.
05:52Okay, ready?
05:53One, two, three.
05:55Three!
05:56Oh my god!
05:58So chic, so shiny.
06:01Sarah, is that you?
06:04I've like never seen myself like this before.
06:07And I've never seen myself with highlights that start at my roots.
06:13I really love my new hair.
06:15I think I was completely like blown away.
06:17I'm really, really happy with it.
06:19But I do feel like this is a big change for me because I've been having kind of that blonde,
06:24streaky, brassy highlights for so long that I've never seen my hair kind of like in this like rich color.
06:31I like really thought that Sarah's hair was, you know, like all over that like reddish brown color.
06:36But when I looked at it in the mirror, I realized, wow, there's like these subtle highlights.
06:40And that's kind of why it looks more in depth, like much more richer in color.
06:46Like I didn't realize how much detail was being put into my hair.
06:49So I was really, really blown away when I saw it in person.
06:52Sweet Rebecca has been, you know, as we know, coloring her hair at home, which, you know, she did a
06:59pretty good job, I will say.
07:00But, you know, taking the leap of faith and putting it in the professional's hands, I'm very proud of her.
07:06Her color transformation today took us about two hours.
07:09That's not always the case though, you guys.
07:10Sometimes these things can take up to eight hours, but her hair cooperated and we were able to create dreams.
07:18Rebecca's upkeep is pretty minimal.
07:20Since this is her first time visiting a professional for color, I wanted to make sure that this wasn't going
07:27to be something that she was going to have to continuously go into the salon for.
07:31So I would say she could get away with doing this twice a year.
07:34I'm not mad at a little at-home root touch-up, but balayaging and bleaching leave it to the professionals.
07:42I didn't realize how much work it took to get my hair professionally colored.
07:46I can watch as many YouTube videos as I want and think that, you know, like, oh, I can do
07:51this myself or it looks easy.
07:53But after, like, sitting in this chair, like, there's so much work that it has to be done to, like,
07:59get this completely right.
08:01And I think colorists are geniuses.
08:04Nikki saved my hair because it was looking really, really dry.
08:07I don't think you can ever make your hair healthy with box bleach.
08:10I'm probably going to stay away from that.
08:12Working with Nikki and Zakiya at 901 was an amazing experience.
08:16I knew I was in good hands.
08:18I would say my current hair definitely makes me feel a lot more confident.
08:22I'm really, really excited to, like, bring this into the rest of 2021.
08:26I'm so excited for what this new look will bring me.
