00:00I'm most fearful about my hair becoming damaged.
00:03I don't want those curls to go away,
00:05but I feel like I'm in good hands.
00:07I'm just excited to have a new look
00:09and see how my friends and family react.
00:12Hi, my name is Regina.
00:13Today, I'm here at Spoken Wheels Salon.
00:15I'm really excited because I'm going to get my virgin hair
00:18dyed for the first time.
00:20Today, I want to get this cinnamon color hair,
00:24mostly because I saw it back in August.
00:26I really wanted to do it, but I was super nervous.
00:28I also faced a lot of, like, that stigma
00:32of a certain skin tone.
00:33You can't dye your hair a certain color.
00:35As I'm getting older, I just really am coming
00:38into my own womanhood, and I don't really care.
00:41I'm going to do what I want to my hair.
00:42A little nervous, but I know Alex is going to fleek it.
00:45She does amazing work, so I'm super excited.
00:48Hi, my name is Alexandria Hires.
00:49I'm a colorist at Spoken Wheel Flatiron.
00:52I specialize in color.
00:53I work with all textured hairs,
00:55but my favorite is working with Quilly hair.
00:56So today with Regina, we're going to be turning her natural hair,
00:59her natural textured hair, to a golden cinnamon brown.
01:03We want to make sure we keep with her complexion
01:05to make sure she doesn't look too warm or too ashy.
01:08All in all, we just want her to leave looking like a goddess.
01:12So we'll be using a heat protectant for her hair
01:15to make sure we don't damage her coils.
01:16Sometimes color can stretch out the coils.
01:18These different treatments will help the coils bounce back.
01:21So with this application, what we do with natural hair,
01:24we usually straighten it or stretch the hair.
01:26We section it into four quarters for even application.
01:29My journey with my hair has not been too drastic.
01:33So when I was younger, I would get perms, relaxers.
01:36That's just how my mom did my hair.
01:38She had two girls, and I have really thick curly hair.
01:46My mom used to get me braids in the summer because I would go to the beach.
01:49For black hair, you really don't want to, you know, damage it.
01:53So you do these protective styles.
01:54But for me personally, it was just a little bit of a stigma
01:57because I grew up in a mostly non-black community.
02:01So it was kind of confusing to them when I would come in with braids
02:05that were like super long.
02:06As a kid, you just want to fit in.
02:08So I didn't really understand it.
02:10Race wasn't even in my mind.
02:11You know, I was a child, but obviously it became prevalent the more I got older.
02:24We'll start with the roots, application at the roots,
02:26and we'll go from mids to ends.
02:38I started my natural hair journey on accident, actually,
02:42because I had missed a hair appointment to get it permed.
02:45And then it just kept getting curly from there.
02:48And then I just learned how to take care of my natural hair.
02:51I definitely feel like I have a more healthy relationship with my hair now.
03:10So Regina will be processing for 45 minutes under a cap.
03:14Then after, we'll go shampoo and condition her hair.
03:16And then we'll place her under the dryer with a conditioning treatment.
03:18This treatment under the dryer will be about 10, 15 minutes.
03:22And then we'll blow dry and style accordingly.
03:26The only stigma that I'm just now overcoming is you can't do certain hairstyles
03:32or certain hair colors because it doesn't look good on you
03:34or because of your skin tone.
03:35And I feel like fully free now to do whatever I want to do.
03:48All right, you ready to see your new look?
03:50Yes, I'm so excited.
03:52Me too. Let's see.
03:54Oh my gosh.
04:02I feel so good. I'm so happy with the color.
04:06I was so nervous, but I knew Alex really did her thing.
04:10Like, this matches my skin tone so perfectly.
04:13I feel like a new woman. Like, who is she?
04:18This looks great on my skin tone. I could have done it a long time ago.
04:22But, you know, don't listen to other people, I guess.
04:24Do what you want because this looks really amazing.
04:27I just feel like this next year, I just feel like I'm a new person
04:32and now I can see that I'm a new person
04:34and I really feel like I'm stepping into that womanhood
04:36as I turn 23 next month and now it feels real.
04:41So it's nice to see it actualized.
04:43And I'm so grateful for this.
04:46Thank you so much for watching.
