00:00is our browns beat reporter daryl writer hello d what's happening daryl oh hello boys i mean you
00:05do get to see josh allen that's a one yeah yeah i actually get to see what an nfl quarterback
00:10looks like i'm looking forward to it i'd like you to think this while you're out there don't think
00:16this let me rephrase it don't think this oh my god john dorsey what were you thinking don't think
00:23that when you're out there okay i well i've been thinking that for the longest time but you know
00:28what in in fairness to that whole situation because you're 100 right it's hard not to think
00:33that um you know it did take josh allen a couple of years to turn into the the josh allen
00:39that became
00:39an nfl mvp and turn the bills into a you know perennial contender in the afc and knowing the
00:48situation that often occurs here in cleveland you do have to ask the question could he have been as
00:55successful here in cleveland with the lack of patience that is often displayed so um hard to
01:02argue with that one d hard to argue i mean it it's you know it's hard not to look at
01:06what could have
01:07been the ifs buts and candy and nuts from 2018 but there are there are other realities that go with
01:15that right and so um i'm looking forward to seeing josh allen uh today i'm looking forward to seeing how
01:23the
01:23browns defense stacks up against him and that bills offense because they look elite uh going against
01:30the browns offense on a daily basis the defensive line gets a really good pressure up front uh the
01:36secondary does a great job uh covering but you know is that a byproduct of they are that great or
01:45is
01:45that a byproduct of subpar quarterback play and uh subpar offensive line play so what's great about
01:53today's practice is guys that you know when uh you have todd munkin yesterday talking about how this is
01:59a measuring stick it really is because we often in these joint practices we really get to see what
02:05the cleveland browns are about and the joint practices for better or worse tend to forecast
02:13the season we're in store for you go back to the vikings a few years ago the giants right practices
02:18even buffalo years and years ago like what when they hold is philadelphia last year we get a pretty
02:24good idea what we're in store for uh during the season with these joint practices so i am
02:30uh all sarcasm and kidding aside i really am looking forward to this practice today
02:34so one of the things that i want to see daryl is especially in that chicago game it seemed as
02:41though the offensive line showed some woes in it is that what you've been seeing in practice every
02:48day as well or was that a one-off because of opponent well it's hard to gauge it because there's
02:55not a lot of live stuff uh going on in practice except for when they're in the pads and even
03:01when
03:01they're in the pads the defensive line gets tremendous pressure on the quarterbacks um i
03:08firmly believe that that's starting five for the browns offensive line i think todd munkin should play
03:14those guys for over a quarter on uh saturday they need time together uh but i i don't think he's
03:23going
03:23to do that i think he i if they play at all it's not going to be for long similar
03:28to chicago the i think
03:30that what you're referencing dan is uh there's not much depth there um on the offensive line that
03:38is you know again reps right and and work but um we're going to get a good look at uh
03:47you know
03:48that group today when they go against that bill's defensive front daryl how how settled is that group
03:54you know with with austin barber moving inside for a couple of reps todd said and you know
04:00titus howard is i would assume he's at right tackle but it looks like they're still kind of
04:06searching for the best five guys there well the starting five i think it's set you think it is
04:11okay yeah what they're trying to figure out they're trying to figure out who's who's the first interior
04:16lineman off the bench who's your swing tackle like those are i think that the answers that todd
04:24munkin is looking for and that's where you know you talk about you know kt loveston it you know he
04:30started out on the interior now they're putting him back outside again you mentioned austin barber
04:34put him in like they're they're bouncing guys around to find out who uh their role players on the
04:41offensive line are but i do believe that that starting five is pretty much set elton jenkins is
04:47your starting center and and uh uh tevin jenkins will be your starting right guard could could this
04:54be a situation daryl where we see different guys play during a game once we get into the regular
05:01season or do you think they're going to roll out five and that's going to be your starting five
05:04yeah i i am never into the platooning thing when it comes to the offensive line jeff
05:10uh it's been done before we've seen it it tends not to go very well so i am about
05:19the five best guys play that's your starting five and and obviously you cross your fingers and hope
05:24everyone stays healthy but i'm not interested in a lot of platoon work when it comes to the
05:29offensive line uh you you dip into the bench only when you have to daryl writer joining us of course
05:35he's presented by shaven jewelers cleveland's premier jewelry store daryl one of the guys who has blown me
05:40away to this point has been isaiah bond how much should we expect to see isaiah bond in this
05:46offense because this wide receiver room has seemed to have gone from pretty empty to pretty packed
05:51with talent pretty fast well i am putting him in front of jerry judy to me right now jerry judy
05:57is
05:57the fourth receiver he's dropping a lot of passes in practice which i don't like um he should or put
06:03one on a dime to him uh on the near sideline and it went right through his hands so i
06:09i just uh
06:10you know and i just i'm i just i'm struggling with jerry judy right now uh for me the top
06:20three guys
06:20denzel boston's your one casey concepcion is your two and uh isaiah bond is your three and jerry judy's
06:29the four that that's just how i feel about that receiver group and quite frankly i think the top
06:40they can be a little interchangeable boston's your number one uh but yeah i i think you're going to
06:46see uh isaiah bond quite a bit uh this year along with the other guys uh assuming they can get
06:52the
06:52ball to him i mean that that's what it's about you have to get the ball to these guys and
06:56allow them
06:57to be able to make plays what's nice is that there is a dynamic skill set with those three players
07:03and
07:03they're very young players okay you've got you know boston and concepcion are rookies bond is going
07:09into his second year this is his first full training camp uh he he looks like a polished wide receiver
07:16today compared to where he was when he walked in the door in the middle of training camp last year
07:21right so um that that's why i'm so bullish on the skilled position players because you're right dan
07:30this this is a group of guys that are fun to watch they catch the football when it's thrown to
07:37them
07:37and when you get the ball in their hands they can do something with it so um i anticipate that
07:43it's
07:43not just isaiah bond who you're going to see a lot of this you're going to see a lot of
07:47uh those young
07:48guys all right jaryl let's get to it uh shadour to sean both getting first team reps today according to
07:56todd munkin do you really think todd right now is is is sitting here looking at this quarterback
08:02situation and thinking gosh i wonder which guy is the starter or do you think he actually knows and
08:08he's just either waiting for some reason or hoping that somebody changes his mind i think he knows and
08:16i think he's hoping somebody can change his mind um and that ain't gonna happen so uh i think it's
08:24the sean um i've seen nothing in practice uh that would change my mind on that that's not the route
08:34i would go i i would just deal with the shadour sanders growing pains and believe me there would
08:39be a lot of growing pains with shadour sanders but i just think that that juice is worth you know
08:45the squeeze more so than deshaun i just i don't see upside in playing deshaun watson other than
08:51todd munkins you know it's his first and probably only nfl head coaching job he made the joke the
08:59other day uh i forget what he's talking about but he made a comment about you know hey you know
09:03i'm
09:03not you know most young coaches you know younger coaches they come in and you know they try and do
09:09things and they're you know they're also looking to the next job because i'm not worried about the
09:14next one yeah i'm not this this this might be my only shot here so i'm just going to go
09:20out there
09:20and do things that i want to do and how i want them done i loved that that was a
09:24great line yeah
09:25i i do i do too i think that there's a tremendous amount of freedom in that as well right
09:30yep um and
09:32and if it doesn't work you go make a lot of money as a coordinator somewhere hey bruce harryan's got
09:36two gigs yeah right but bruce won that's true yeah bruce made a super bowl yeah so like i think
09:44that
09:44that just is another i think checkbox on in the positive column for todd munkin right um just
09:52refreshingly honest about that situation because when he said that and then after the you know after
09:58the media availability i was going back and i was cutting up video i i sat for a second and
10:03i thought
10:03about that and i was like you know what that's that's refreshingly honest but at the same time
10:09brilliant as well that he's not worried about if the browns show him the door and having to you
10:15know again i'd be a head coach again no he's looking at this like this is his shot and so
10:20he's going to
10:20do it his way and he's gonna he's gonna pass or fail on his way of doing things rather than
10:26just trying
10:27to do some stuff that might conform to some sort of norm or something like that right so i i
10:34think that's
10:34great uh but uh yeah i i i think it's gonna be deshaun and deshaun's gonna have a leash maybe
10:42six
10:42games that i'm just throwing a number out there because you know whatever but um and then they
10:48turn it over to shador and the positive there is is shador's made tremendous progress between the
10:55time todd munkin walked in the door to today he's a much better quarterback but he's not there yet
11:00he's got a ways to go and so hey if you can buy him another six weeks to continue attacking
11:05this
11:05thing and working behind the scenes and and and getting better and things like that so that when
11:10you do put him on the field he has a better chance of being successful uh than he is in
11:15in week one
11:16and the counter argument obviously is if you pull the plug on deshaun that means things have gone
11:20really bad and now shador takes over a lost season for the second straight year in a row and is
11:25that
11:25fair to shador and i understand that conversation but yeah i just i'm to a point now where i'm just
11:31trying to rationalize why on god's green earth they're going to make us suffer through deshaun
11:36watson for x amount of weeks going forward here well you want to have a brainstorming session d i'm
11:42available because i i'm baffled as well it's just deshaun does not look good in practice he threw two
11:50more interceptions yesterday i counted at least three non-competitive throws and i define non-competitive
11:58throws as not within the same zip code of anybody would yowming catch this ball yeah like it just he's
12:07not good he really is not look shador's not any better let's be very clear about that but at least
12:14with shador there's some upside there i still think deshaun is seeing some ghosts which is natural
12:20he's only played 19 games in six years right of course he's not going to see the field the way
12:25he's supposed to and process the way he's supposed to at least with shador sanders yeah he's not seeing
12:29the field and processing the way that's needed to be an elite quarterback in the nfl but at least with
12:34him you can you can teach you can go through those growing pains and hope that he gets better
12:39i have no expectation that deshaun watson is ever going to be a better quarterback
12:44enjoy joint practice can't wait to uh see your coverage on it and we'll enjoy you and lance and
12:50everything else that's going on podcast and everything else thanks daryl thanks d you guys
12:54you
