A 28-year-old man was allegedly strangled to death by his wife and her alleged lover in Maharashtra's Sangli district, with the accused initially attempting to pass off the murder as an accidental death.

The deceased has been identified as Anand Sarje (28). The accused are his wife, Pallavi Sarje, and her alleged lover, Deepak Ajmane (23). The incident took place in the Bapat Mala area under the Vishrambag Police Station limits.

According to police, Anand's death was initially registered as accidental on June 25 after Pallavi claimed he had been assaulted by unidentified persons, returned home, gone to sleep and later lost consciousness. He was taken to the Government Hospital in Sangli, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

However, the post-mortem examination revealed scratch marks on Anand's neck consistent with strangulation, prompting police to launch a detailed investigation.

Police said they monitored Pallavi's movements and detained her for questioning. During sustained interrogation, she allegedly gave contradictory statements before confessing to the crime. Police said she admitted to killing Anand with the help of her alleged lover, Deepak Ajmane.

According to investigators, Pallavi allegedly called Ajmane to the house after an argument with Anand. While Anand was asleep, the two allegedly strangled him to death before fabricating a story to conceal the murder.

Police said Anand and Pallavi had married for love and had two children. Their relationship had been strained for the past two years due to frequent domestic disputes. Pallavi allegedly claimed she had suffered physical and mental abuse from Anand, who was reportedly addicted to alcohol, and cited this as the motive behind the killing.

Police further said Ajmane worked with Anand at a textile shop and later developed a relationship with Pallavi.

Both accused have been arrested and remanded to four days of police custody. Further investigation is underway.
