16:16and whose eyes God has opened

16:24which ought to be made constant
16:26and which needs an interpreter of its means
16:31Old thoughts, old institutions are on the cusp of perishing
16:35The old forms do not fit the new thought
16:38the new wants, the new aspirations of men

16:46and the old bottles are bursting on every side
16:50There is a stirring of all the surface waters
16:53of English life and thought
16:55but none can tell why they are stirred
16:59There is something at work beneath which no man can see
17:02which causes all these conflicting and commingling currents
17:06all this trouble on the upper waters
17:11There is however in it all that is inexpressibly cheering
17:17It tells us most plainly that Christ is coming
17:20Not in final judgment
17:22but in some great revolution of life and thought
17:26We are waiting for the sun of righteousness to rise
17:29and to illumine the new way on which we are entering
17:33Let us be ready for our John the Baptist when he comes
17:38Let us pray for the interpreter and the awakener
17:41who will come and say to us
17:43The kingdom of heaven is truly at hand

17:54The Holy Spirit is fire
17:57Fire all over the world
17:59has been taken to represent divine energy
18:03Even in heathen regimes
18:06side by side with the worship of light
18:09was the worship of fire
18:12Though the thought was darkened and marred
18:14and wrongly apprehended
18:16and ferociously worked out in ritual
18:18it was a true thought for all of that
18:22And scripture has from the very beginning used it
18:25There is a continuous chain of symbolism
18:28according to which some aspect of the divine nature
18:31and especially the spirit of God
18:33is set forth to us as fire
18:38The question is then
18:40What is that aspect?
18:42The fire of God's spirit is not a wrathful energy
18:45working pain and death
18:46but a merciful omnipotence
18:49bringing light, joy and peace
18:52The spirit which is fire
18:54is a spirit which gives life
18:57So the symbol
18:59in the special reference in today's text
19:01has nothing of terror or destruction
19:04but is full of hope
19:05and bright and alive with promise
19:10Christ plunges us into this divine fire
19:15I presume that scarcely anyone
19:17will deny that our version
19:19weakens the force of John's word
19:21by translating with water
19:23with the Holy Ghost
19:24instead of
19:26of in water
19:27in the Holy Ghost
19:30Christ gives the spirit
19:32in and by Jesus
19:33you and I are brought into contact with this cleansing fire
19:37without his work
19:39it would never have been burnt on earth
19:42without our faith in his work
19:44it can never purify our souls
19:47This fiery baptism quickens and cleanses
19:51Fire gives warmth
19:53Christ comes to kindle in men's soul
19:56a blaze of enthusiastic divine love
19:58such as the world never saw
20:00and to set them aflame
20:03with fervent earnestness
20:05to melt all the icy hardness of heart
20:08and turn cold self-regard
20:10into the spirit
20:10of self-forgetting consecration
20:15Fire purifies
20:17That spirit which is fire
20:19produces holiness in heart and character
20:22by this chiefly amongst his manifold operations
20:25that he excites the flame of love to our God
20:29which burns our souls dear with its white fervor
20:33This is the Christian method
20:35of making men good
20:38First know his love
20:39then believe it
20:40then love him back again
20:42and let that genial heat
20:44permeate all your life
20:46and it will woo forth everywhere
20:49blossoms of beauty
20:50and fruits of holiness
20:51that shall clothe the pastures
20:53of the wilderness
20:54with gladness
20:58The disciples of John
21:00were to learn that their hearts
21:02were under another tillage
21:03a cultivation other than their own
21:06They could not winnow the grain
21:08They could not separate corn from chaff
21:13If there was no one more skillful
21:15than they were to do that
21:16the labour had been thrown away
21:19The corn would not supply bread to the eater
21:22nor seed to the sower
21:26They were to be sure
21:27that this discipline
21:28if it was indeed divine discipline
21:30would be thorough
21:32He will thoroughly purge his floor
21:37Those who heard John speak
21:39and understood him
21:39must have surely received two lessons
21:42but at first
21:43they were perhaps inconsistent
21:46They must have been sure
21:48that he who was conducting
21:49this sifting discipline
21:51of which the prophet testified
21:53over them and over the whole nation
21:55was the Lord of the spirits of all flesh
21:59And yet
22:00they were told of a man standing among them
22:02who claimed the floor as his
22:04and could prove it to be his
22:06by purging it
22:10John's words were fulfilled
22:12when Jesus Christ came in the flesh
22:14They have been fulfilling themselves
22:16in every age
22:17since he ascended on high
22:19In every age
22:20men
22:21who have been led to discover
22:23their own great necessities
22:24have asked indeed
22:25for one who should forgive their sins
22:29but quite as earnestly
22:30for one who should destroy their sins
22:33who should put an everlasting barrier
22:37between that in them
22:38which they know to be their enemy
22:40often after their triumphant enemy
22:44and that which cleaved to a friend
22:46and sought fellowship with him
22:48likeness to him
22:50They had learned to welcome sufferings
22:52when they found that they were designed
22:54for this object
22:56The fires were good
22:58which denoted that they were baptised
23:00with the spirit
23:01and that he would not leave them
23:03until he had made them
23:04what they were created to be
23:07And so too
23:08the course of history
23:09and the trials of nations
23:11interpret themselves
23:14As long as there is any great strength
23:17vitality, faith in people
23:19as long as there is wheat
23:20which Christ will assuredly gather
23:23into his garner
23:24and so long as the nation
23:26will be subjected to frequent fire
23:28That is, its chaff
23:30all its untruth and baseness
23:33and heartlessness
23:34will be burnt up
23:36Indeed, it may be said
23:38always in such fires
23:39for the time of our wealth
23:41as well as the time of our tribulation
23:43is a searching time
23:46That is the time in which
23:48it is hardest for us
23:49to separate the chaff
23:50from the wheat
23:52and therefore
23:52in which we have the most need
23:54to recollect
23:55that there is a Lord
23:56who is doing it
23:57and will do it thoroughly
