00:22Let us pray.
00:50Let us pray.
00:54And that all sinful passion and affection being destroyed within me, I may be renewed in perfect innocence of life.
01:26Let us pray.
01:34Praise and honor and glory be to you, O Christ, who, out of your affection for me, granted me to
01:40be born in the true Christian faith,
01:44and has mercilessly brought me up from the beginning of my life, supplying me with food and the other necessaries
01:50for the nourishment and support of my body.
01:54May my heart find no relish except in and through you.
01:59May you alone possess my innermost soul.
02:03May I exceedingly hunger for you, the bread of heaven, and thirst for you, the fountain of life.
02:09So that this life's exile ended, I may deserve to be satisfied with the joys of your eternal perfection.
02:19Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, up until this time, has preserved and delivered me from
02:26countless dangers of soul and body,
02:28even when I abused your gifts, not deserting me, even when I abused your gifts, not deserting me.
02:47I may bemoan myself, I may be hateful in my own sight, but I may please you, my creator and
02:56my only redeemer in all things.
03:01Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when I lie immersed in the most loathsome vices,
03:09and was leading a most ungodly life, in your long-suffering, bore with me for such a long time, and
03:16brought me to repentance.
03:18Grant that my acceptable contrition and holy works, I may expiate the stains of my past sin,
03:25and that from now on I may lead a life of purity, and love you above all things, with most
03:33burning love.
03:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when I was on the brink of the very precipice,
03:42and just within the jaws of hell, did not permit me to perish, but called me, though deaf,
03:49and trying to run from you to the way of salvation.
03:54Grant that from now on I may follow after you with humble devotion,
03:59and with a joyful heart correspond to your holy inspirations,
04:05with from my heart farewell to all things, and may cleave inseparably to you alone.
04:14Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who always directed me, the vilest of sinners,
04:21has protected me, has looked upon me with the eyes of mercy,
04:25and still so fondly supports and cherishes me with your goodness.
04:30Despite my daily transgressions, as if forgetful of all others,
04:35you cared for me alone, grant that I also may love you most ardently,
04:43leaving all transitory things for your sake,
04:46and may think of you alone, and may with a ready mind and in all places,
04:51follow and perform your holy will.
04:55Amen.
05:00O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:11O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:35We as the see that haveützen kill us, and not we ourselves,
05:40We are his people and the sheep of his foster.
05:48O Lord, open your way into hate'shift malice,
05:53And in truth is God's great praise,
05:58He can come to him and speak to the Lord of his name.
06:07For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
06:17and his truth and glory from generation to generation.
06:30Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
06:41as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
06:50world without end. Amen.
07:09Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness.
07:18According to the multitude of thy masters,
07:24throw away my offenses.
07:27Wash me truly from thy wickedness,
07:33and lend me from thy sin.
07:36For I have knowledge my thoughts,
07:41and my sin is ever before me.
07:47And let me only have I sin,
07:51and God makes evil in thy sight,
07:55that thou mightest be justified in thy sin,
07:59and fear when thou art judged.
08:04Dear Lord, I was shaken in wickedness,
08:10and in sin, let my Father come speak with me.
08:15But, lo, I requirest truth in thee in your heart,
08:21and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.
08:29Thou shalt hurt me with his hope,
08:32and I shall be clean.
08:35Thou shalt wash me,
08:37and I shall be whiter than snow.
08:41Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness,
08:46Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness.
08:54Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness.
09:02Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness.
09:10Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness.
09:12Thou shalt make me hear your joy and gladness.
09:16And take on thy holy spirit, Father.
09:23Forgive me the comfort of thy heaven, and starnish me with thy free spirit.
09:34Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wither, and still shall be converted unto thee.
09:46Deliver me from blood, guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my head, and my tongue shall see
09:57of thy righteousness.
10:00Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall show thy praise.
10:08For thou desirest no sacrifice, else could I be with thee, but thou delightest not in God and of my
10:21hands.
10:22The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit, a broken and contrite heart, O God, shall thou not disguise.
10:33Thou shalt open my eyes, O God, thou be faithful and gracious unto Zion, build the robbers of Jerusalem.
10:46Then shall thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt offerings and the nations.
10:55Then shall live of a young woman, a young woman, a young woman, a young woman, a young woman, a
11:03young woman.
11:05Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
11:15As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.
11:22And without end. Amen.
11:39The Gospel according to St. Matthew, Chapter 2
11:46After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time of King Herod,
11:53wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
11:57Where is the one who is born to be king of the Jews?
12:02We saw his star when it rose, and have come to worship him.
12:08When King Herod heard this, he was alarmed, and all of Jerusalem with him.
12:15After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law,
12:19he asked them where the Christ was due to be born.
12:25In Bethlehem of Judea, they said, for it is written this way by the prophet.
12:31And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are in no way least among the rulers of Judah.
12:37For out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.
12:45Then Herod privately summoned the wise men, and determined from them when the star had appeared.
12:53He sent them to Jerusalem and said,
12:56Go, look carefully for the child.
12:59When you find him, inform me that I also may go and worship him.
13:06After listening to the king, they left, and once again the star they had seen when it rose,
13:11led them until it stopped above the place where the child was.
13:16When they saw the star, they shouted with joy.
13:20And as they came into the house, and saw the child with Mary his mother,
13:24they bowed down and worshipped him.
13:26They opened their treasure boxes, and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
13:36But after being warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
13:39they went back by another route to their own country.
13:46After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,
13:51Get up, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you.
13:58For Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.
14:04Then he got up and took the child and his mother during the night, and went to Egypt.
14:10He stayed there until Herod died, and in this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was
14:17fulfilled.
14:23When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was enraged,
14:29and he sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem, and throughout the surrounding region,
14:35from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learnt from the wise men.
14:44Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled.
14:48A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud wailing, Rachel weeping for her children,
14:56and she did not want to be comforted, because they were gone.
15:03After Herod had died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
15:10Get up, and take the child and his mother.
15:14Go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead.
15:20So he got up and took the child and his mother, and returned to the land of Israel.
15:27But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father Herod,
15:33he was afraid to go there.
15:36And being warned in a dream, he went to the region of Galilee.
15:41He came to a town called Nazareth and settled there.
15:45Then what had been spoken by the prophets was fulfilled,
15:50that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.
15:55This is the word of the Lord.
15:58Thanks be to God.
16:06This one chapter contains all that St. Matthew records of the childhood of Christ.
16:15St. Mark and St. John tell us nothing, and St. Luke very little.
16:21This singular reticence has often been remarked upon, and it is certainly most noteworthy,
16:27and is only a sign of its genuine and truthfulness.
16:34A token that what these men wrote was in the deepest sense not their own.
16:41For if they had been left to themselves in the performance of the task given to them,
16:47they surely would not have restrained themselves as they had done.
16:55The Jews of the time attached great importance to child life,
17:00as is evident from the single fact that they had no less than seven different words
17:05to mark the successive ages of development from the newborn to the young man,
17:11and to omit all reference to these stages,
17:16except the slight notice of the infancy in this chapter,
17:21was certainly not according to Matthew the Jew,
17:24not what would have been expected of him had he been left to his own devices.
17:30The only explanation we can have is that he was moved or restrained by the Holy Spirit.
17:40This view is strikingly confirmed by comparison with the spurious Gospels afterwards published
17:46by men who thought they might improve upon the original records,
17:51with their childish stories as to what the boy Jesus said and did.
17:58These awkward fictions reflect the spirit of the age,
18:02but the simple records of the four evangelists mirror for us the spirit of truth.
18:09To the vulgar mind they may seem bare and defective,
18:14but all men of culture and mature judgment
18:17recognize in their simplicity and naturalness a note of manifest superiority.
18:28Much space could indeed be occupied in discussing the advantages of this reticence,
18:34but a single illustration may suggest the main thought.
18:40Let us recall for one moment the well-known picture entitled
18:43The Shadow of the Cross,
18:45designed and executed by a master,
18:48who might surely be considered qualified to illustrate in detail the life in Nazareth.
18:56We have nothing to say as to the merit of the picture as a work of art,
19:00let alone those specifically qualified to judge to speak of this.
19:07But it is not generally felt that the realism of the carpenter's shop is most painful.
19:14The eye is averted from the true obtrusive detail,
19:19while the mind gladly returns to the starkly vividness of the picture
19:24of the vague impressions made on us by the hint in the scriptures.
19:31Was it not well that our blessed Saviour should grow in retirement and seclusion?
19:36And if so, why should that seclusion be invaded?
19:41If his family was withdrawn from the eyes of man at that time,
19:45there remains the same reason why it should be withdrawn from the eyes of man for all time.
19:51And the more we think of it,
19:53the more we realise that it is better in every way
19:56that the veil should have been dropped just where it has been,
19:59that all should remain just as it was,
20:03when, with unconscious skill,
20:05the sacred artists finished their perfect sketches of the child Jesus.
20:15However, let us turn the argument around
20:18and look at it from the opposite direction.
20:22If St Matthew would tell us so little,
20:25why should he say anything at all?
20:29What was his purpose in relating what he sets out in his second chapter?
20:36We believe it must have been to show how Christ would receive.
20:41In fact, it seems to correspond to the single sentence in the fourth gospel.
20:47He came into his own and his own received him not.
20:52Only St Matthew gives a slightly wider and brighter view.
20:57He shows us not only how Jerusalem rejected him,
21:01but how the East welcomed him and Egypt sheltered him.
21:08Throughout the entire Old Testament,
21:09our attention is often called not merely to Jerusalem,
21:13which occupied the centre of the ancient world,
21:16but to the kingdoms around the boat,
21:19especially to the great empires of the East and the South.
21:23The Empire of the East,
21:25represented in succession by Chaldea,
21:28Assyria,
21:30Babylonia,
21:31Media,
21:31and Persia,
21:32and that of the South,
21:34the mighty monarchy of Egypt,
21:37which under its thirty dynasties,
21:39held a steady course alongside these.
21:44How natural then for the evangelist,
21:46whose special mission it was to connect the old with the new,
21:50to take the opportunity to show that
21:53while his own Jerusalem rejected the Messiah,
21:56the old rivals of the East and the South welcomed him.
22:01In the first chapter,
22:02the child Jesus was set out as the heir of the promise
22:05made to Abraham and his seed,
22:08and the fulfilment of a prophecy given to the chosen people.
22:12Now he is further set forth,
22:15as the one who satisfied the longing of those
22:17they had been taught to regard as their natural enemies,
22:22but now who should be looked upon as their fellow heirs
22:25with them of God's heritage,
22:28and share us in his promise in Christ by the Gospel.
22:34We can see then how the second chapter needed to complete the first,
22:38and how the two together give us a much more complete view of the Advent,
22:43as was most needed by the Jews of the period,
22:46and while it is instructive and suggestive to men of all countries and of all time.
22:53As then, the last paragraph began with,
22:57Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way.
23:01We may regard this as beginning with,
23:04Now the reception of Christ was on this way.
23:15According to this plan of argument,
23:19we must disregard the detail and many interesting questions,
23:23for the consideration of which is surely enough
23:26to refer many well-known and widely read books
23:28on the life of Christ.
23:31Let us instead confine ourselves to the general thoughts and suggestions
23:35which seem best fitted to bring out the spirit of today's passage as a whole.
23:41Let us then look first at the manner of his reception in Jerusalem.
23:47The city which, as the son of David,
23:50he could claim as his own.
23:53It was the very centre of the circle of Old Testament illumination.
23:58It had all possible advantages
24:01over any other place in the world
24:03for knowing when and how the Christ would come.
24:08And yet, when he did come,
24:10the people of Jerusalem knew nothing about it.
24:13They had their first intimation
24:15from strangers who had come from the Far East
24:19to seek him.
24:21Not only did they know nothing about it
24:23until they were told,
24:24but when told,
24:26they were troubled.
24:29Indifference,
24:30where we would otherwise have expected
24:32excitement and eagerness.
24:34Trouble,
24:35where we should have looked for joy.
24:42We have only to examine
24:44the contemporary records
24:46of the state of Jerusalem
24:48to understand it thoroughly
24:51and to see how exceedingly natural
24:53this reaction would have been.
24:57Those unacquainted with these records
24:59can have no idea
25:01of the gaiety and frivolity
25:03of the Jewish capital at that time.
25:07We all know, of course,
25:08something of the style
25:09and magnificence
25:10of which Herod the Great lived.
25:13But one is not apt to suppose
25:15that luxurious living
25:17was the rule
25:18amongst the people of the town.
25:20And yet,
25:21it seems to have been so.
25:25How much there was
25:27to be seen and heard
25:28in these luxuriously furnished houses
25:30and these sumptuous entertainments.
25:34In the women's apartments,
25:36we read from accounts contemporary,
25:39friends from the country
25:41would see every novelty in dress,
25:43adornment and jewellery,
25:45and have the benefit
25:47of examining themselves
25:49in mirrors.
25:53Female visitors
25:54could buy anything
25:56in Jerusalem,
25:57from a false tooth
25:58to an Arabian veil,
26:00a Persian shore,
26:02or an Indian dress.
26:06Then,
26:07after furnishing
26:09such painful evidence
26:11of Jerusalem
26:11and the moral corruption
26:13to which it led,
26:16we can conclude
26:18by looking at one of the sacred books
26:20at the time,
26:22which describes the dignity
26:24of the Jerusalemites,
26:27mentioning the wealth
26:29in which they lavished
26:30of their marriages,
26:32the ceremonies
26:33which insisted
26:34on repeated invitations
26:36to the guests
26:37for the banquet,
26:38that men inferior
26:40should not be bidden,
26:41the dress
26:42in which they appeared,
26:43the manner
26:44in which the dishes
26:45should be served,
26:46the wine
26:47in white crystal vases,
26:49the punishment
26:50of the cook
26:50who failed
26:51in his duty,
26:53and so on,
26:55from which
26:56we may
26:57place in context
26:59many
27:00of the
27:01gospel stories
27:02that we
27:03will go on
27:04to read.
27:07If things
27:08of this kind
27:09represented
27:09the dignity
27:10of the people
27:10of Jerusalem,
27:12we need not
27:13inquire further
27:14as to why
27:14they were troubled
27:15when they heard
27:16that to them
27:17had been born
27:17in Jerusalem
27:18a saviour
27:19who was Christ
27:20the Lord,
27:22a saviour
27:23who would have
27:23saved them
27:24from their sins
27:25was the very
27:26last thing
27:27that people
27:27of that kind
27:28would have wanted.
27:30Herod suited
27:31them far better,
27:32for it was he
27:33and his court
27:34that set the example
27:36of the luxury
27:37and profligacy
27:39which characterised
27:41the capital.
27:43Do not all
27:44these revelations
27:47as to the state
27:48of things
27:48in the capital
27:49of Israel
27:50set off
27:51more vividly
27:52than ever
27:53than ever
27:53the pure
27:54lustre
27:55of the quiet
27:55simple
27:56humble
27:57peaceful
27:58surroundings
27:59of the babe
28:00of Bethlehem
28:01and the boy
28:02of Nazareth.
28:04Put the dignity
28:05and the trouble
28:06of Jerusalem
28:07over against
28:08the humility
28:08and peace
28:09of Bethlehem
28:10and say
28:11which is the more
28:12dignified
28:13and desirable.
28:15when we look
28:16at the contrast
28:17we cease
28:18to wonder
28:18that with the
28:19exception
28:20of a very few
28:21devout
28:21Simeons
28:22and Annas
28:23waiting
28:24for the
28:24consolation
28:25of Israel
28:26Jerusalem
28:27as a whole
28:28was deeply
28:29troubled
28:30to hear the
28:31rumour
28:31of the advent
28:32of her
28:33saviour king.
28:38Herod's
28:38trouble
28:38we can so
28:40readily understand
28:41that we did
28:42not need to
28:42spend much
28:43more time
28:44over it
28:45or over
28:46what he did
28:46to try and
28:47get rid of it
28:47so thoroughly
28:49in keeping
28:49as it was
28:51with all that
28:51history tells
28:52us of his
28:53character
28:53and conduct.
28:56No wonder
28:57that his one
28:57thought on his
28:58mind was
28:59dispose of him.
29:01But who
29:02were these
29:03truly dignified
29:04men
29:04who are now
29:05turning their
29:06backs on rich
29:07and gay
29:07Jerusalem
29:08and setting
29:09their faces
29:10to the
29:10obscurity
29:11and poverty
29:12of the
29:13village of
29:13Bethlehem?
29:16They
29:17were men
29:18of wealth
29:18and rank
29:19and learning
29:20from the
29:20Far East
29:21representative
29:22of all
29:22that is best
29:23in the old
29:24civilisations
29:25of the world.
29:27They had
29:28only the
29:28scantest
29:29opportunities
29:30of learning
29:30what was
29:31the hope
29:32of Israel
29:33how it
29:34should be
29:34realised
29:35but they
29:36were earnest
29:36men
29:37and their
29:37minds
29:38were not
29:38taken up
29:39with gaiety
29:39and frivolity.
29:41They had
29:42studied the
29:43works of
29:43nature
29:43until their
29:44souls were
29:45full of
29:46the thoughts
29:46of God
29:47in his
29:47glory and
29:48majesty
29:49but their
29:50hearts
29:50yearned
29:51for knowledge
29:52of it.
29:57Whose
29:57glory
29:58was in
29:58heavens
29:59who
30:00could
