00:22Let us pray.
00:48Let us pray.
00:54And that all sinful passion and affection being destroyed within me, I may be renewed in perfect innocence of life.
01:26Let us pray.
02:02May I exceedingly hunger for you, the bread of heaven, and thirst for you, the fountain of life.
02:09So that this life's exile ended, I may deserve to be satisfied with the joys of your eternal perfection.
02:19Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, up until this time, has preserved and delivered me from
02:26countless dangers of soul and body, even when I abused your gifts, not deserting me.
04:45Amen.
04:48Amen.
04:59Amen.
07:08The Earth is the most, and all that bear in it,
07:16the compass of the world, and they let dwell therein.
07:22For he hath found it upon the seas, and with habit among the farms.
07:32Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?
07:38O who shall rise up in his foreign ways?
07:44Even he that hath clean hands and a pure heart,
07:51and that hath most lift up his vital humanity,
07:56no scorn to deceive his favour,
08:00he shall receive the blessing from the Lord,
08:07and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
08:13This is the generation of them that seek him,
08:19even of them that seek my faithful jay.
08:24With God your help, so he pays,
08:29and with God he ever dusting grows,
08:34and the King of Glory shall come in.
08:40Who is the King of Glory?
08:43He is the most, and all that might be,
08:48even the Lord's mighty in battle.
08:54Give up your hands, O ye gates,
08:58and begin his heart the everlasting cause,
09:03and the King of Glory shall come in.
09:08Who is the King of Glory?
09:13Who is the King of Glory?
09:14Even the Lord of hosts,
09:17He is the King of Glory.
09:22Glory is to the Father,
09:25and to the Son,
09:28and to the Holy Ghost.
09:32As it was in the beginning,
09:37his love and heaven shall be,
09:42world without end.
09:47Amen.
09:57A reading from the Gospel according to St. Mark,
09:59Chapter 2
10:02Some days later,
10:04when Jesus returned to Capernaum,
10:06the news spread that he was at home.
10:10So many gathered that there was so
10:12that there was no longer any room,
10:14not even by the door,
10:15and he preached the word to them.
10:19Some people came,
10:20bringing a paralytic,
10:22carried by four of them.
10:25When they were not able to bring him in
10:27because of the crowd,
10:28they removed the roof above Jesus.
10:31Then, after tearing it out,
10:33they lowered the stretcher
10:35the paralytic was lying on.
10:38When Jesus saw their faith,
10:40he said to the paralytic,
10:42Son, your sins are forgiven.
10:47Some of the experts in the law
10:49were sitting there,
10:51turning these things over in their minds.
10:54Why does he speak this way?
10:58Surely this is blasphemy.
10:59Who can forgive sins but God alone?
11:04Now, immediately,
11:06Jesus realized in his spirit
11:07that they were thinking such thoughts.
11:09And he said to them,
11:11Why are you thinking such things in your hearts?
11:15Which is easier to say to the paralytic,
11:17Your sins are forgiven.
11:19Or to say,
11:20Stand up, take your stretcher and walk.
11:24But that you might know
11:26that the Son of Man has authority on earth
11:28to forgive sins.
11:31He turned to the paralytic and said,
11:34I tell you, stand up,
11:36take your stretcher and go home.
11:39And immediately, the man stood up,
11:42took his stretcher and went out
11:44in front of them all.
11:47And they were all amazed
11:48and glorified God, saying,
11:50We have truly never seen anything like this.
11:56Then Jesus went out again by the sea.
11:59The whole crowd came with him
12:01and he taught them.
12:02And as he went along,
12:04he saw out Levi,
12:05the son of Alphaeus,
12:07sitting at the tax booth.
12:09Follow me, he said to him.
12:13And he got up and followed him.
12:17Later, Jesus was having a meal
12:19in Levi's home.
12:20And many tax collectors and sinners
12:23were eating with Jesus
12:24and his disciples.
12:26For there were many who followed him.
12:29When the experts in the law
12:31and the Pharisees saw that he was eating
12:33with sinners and tax collectors,
12:35they said to his disciples,
12:38Why does he eat with tax collectors
12:40and sinners?
12:43When Jesus heard this,
12:44he said to them,
12:46Those who are healthy
12:47don't need a physician,
12:48but those who are sick do.
12:51I have not come to call the righteous
12:53but sinners.
12:57Now John's disciples
12:58and the Pharisees were fasting
13:00and the people came
13:01and asked Jesus,
13:03Why is it that John's disciples
13:05and the disciples of the Pharisees
13:07fast while yours do not?
13:10Jesus answered,
13:12Can the groom's friends fast
13:14while the groom is with them?
13:16As long as they have the groom
13:17with them,
13:18they cannot fast.
13:20But days will come
13:21when the groom will be taken away
13:23from them
13:23and they will fast then
13:25when that day comes.
13:29No one ever sews a piece
13:30of unshrumped cloth
13:31on an old garment.
13:33If they do,
13:34the patch tears away from it,
13:36the new from the old
13:37and the worst tear is made.
13:40No one ever puts new wine
13:42in old wineskins.
13:44If they do,
13:45the wine will burst the skins
13:46and both the wine
13:47and the skins are lost.
13:50But new wine
13:51is put into fresh skins.
13:56This is the word of the Lord.
13:58Thanks be to God.
14:05Since I first read the account
14:07of the crippled man
14:08being lowered on his bed
14:09through the roof
14:10while I was a child,
14:12I love the images
14:14that this created.
14:18However,
14:18let us for a moment
14:19consider the fate
14:20not of the cripple
14:21necessarily
14:22but of his friends.
14:25Picture the scene.
14:27You've taken your friend
14:28to Jesus
14:28to have him healed.
14:30The house is packed
14:31and there is no way through
14:32so what would you do?
14:34How many of us
14:36would have thrown up
14:37our hands in the air
14:38and thought there was no use?
14:40Perhaps we'll try again tomorrow.
14:43How many of us
14:44would have gone to the lengths
14:45that these friends went to?
14:49As we see
14:50throughout the Gospels,
14:51Jesus came up against
14:53those who would ridicule
14:54and try to set at note
14:56his work.
14:59threatened by the honesty
15:00and the following of Jesus,
15:02those in authority
15:03were determined
15:04to try to paint him
15:05as a charlatan.
15:08Oh yes,
15:09we can all go around
15:10saying that sins are forgiven.
15:13But where is the proof?
15:16In an instant,
15:17Jesus had the answer.
15:19Okay,
15:21you want proof of my authority?
15:22How about this?
15:25Jesus commanded
15:26the crippled be healed
15:28so that he was able
15:29to walk out of the house
15:30carrying his bed.
15:33And at once,
15:35the people were able
15:36to see beyond the scribes
15:37to the real authority
15:39that was vested in Jesus.
15:44It is important also
15:46to realize that
15:46physical healing
15:47often goes hand in hand
15:49with spiritual healing.
15:53There is a close link
15:55between the two,
15:56especially when it comes
15:57to mental illnesses,
15:59where low self-esteem
16:00and depression
16:01as a result of things
16:03in our past
16:04may take a serious toll
16:06on our physical well-being.
16:10Remember that Jesus
16:11started by forgiving
16:12the man's sins
16:13and then he went on
16:15to heal the body.
16:18The forgiveness
16:19is the most important,
16:21but invisible on earth.
16:24Healing that he can give us
16:26because our physical relief
16:28lasts only a short while.
16:31While spiritual cleanliness
16:33will grant us a place
16:34in eternity.
16:38Let us never forget
16:39the power of Jesus
16:40which is there waiting
16:42for us to call upon
16:43in his name.
16:47Then we return
16:48to the seashore
16:49with a large crowd
16:51in attendance.
16:54What was the appeal
16:55of the beach to Jesus?
16:58Probably that it offered
17:00a large open space
17:01for the crowd
17:02to be able to gather around
17:03and to hear him speak
17:05from a boat.
17:07We heard in the last passage
17:09of Mark
17:09of the problems
17:11that occurred
17:11when Jesus stayed
17:13in a house.
17:17Walking along the beach
17:18Jesus met Levi
17:20and tells him
17:21follow me.
17:23Again,
17:24like his fellow disciples,
17:27Levi just got up
17:28and left everything
17:29and followed him.
17:32when Jesus calls us
17:33there is no time
17:34for hesitation
17:34or prevarication.
17:36We must just accept
17:38and go with him
17:39for to refuse
17:40is to cause
17:41certain disaster.
17:44Then we come
17:45to the guile
17:46of the Pharisees
17:47for they did not
17:48seek to confront
17:49Jesus here
17:50on matters of teaching
17:51or doctrine
17:52because they would
17:53know
17:54that he would
17:55leave them
17:56standing cold.
17:58instead
17:58they tried
18:00an indirect approach
18:01and get into
18:01conversation
18:02with the disciples
18:03trying to undermine
18:04the relationship
18:05of Jesus
18:06with them.
18:08This is often
18:09the way of the devil
18:10in our lives
18:10for he knows
18:12that a head-on
18:12confrontation
18:13with us
18:13would be counterproductive
18:16and so he tries
18:17an attack
18:17on the flank
18:18pretending
18:19to be friendly
18:20but at the same time
18:23carefully trying
18:24to sow the seeds
18:25of doubt
18:25and discord.
18:29Jesus of course
18:30is wise to this
18:31little ploy
18:32and confronts them
18:34telling them
18:34that he is only
18:35the sick
18:36who need to be saved.
18:39Those who are
18:40without sin
18:40do not need
18:41to be forgiven.
18:44Of course
18:44what the Pharisees
18:46did not understand
18:46was that they too
18:47were just as much
18:48sinners as everybody else.
18:50with whom Jesus
18:50was eating
18:52not only because
18:53they thought
18:53they led a righteous life
18:55ignoring the impurities
18:57of their own hearts
18:59but because they
19:00trusted in their own strength
19:01and looked down
19:02upon those
19:02who were weaker
19:03than themselves.
19:08Having been
19:09criticised
19:10for his own behaviour
19:11and needing
19:12to justify himself
19:14Jesus is now
19:15criticised
19:16for the lack
19:16of propriety
19:17being shown
19:17by his disciples.
19:20The language
19:21tells us
19:21that this was
19:22the day
19:22when the Pharisees
19:23and the disciples
19:24of John
19:24fasted
19:25the implication
19:26being
19:27that the disciples
19:28of John
19:28were fasting
19:29at this very moment.
19:31But on the other hand
19:32here was Jesus
19:33with his own disciples
19:34having a merry feast
19:37and his disciples
19:38no respect
19:39at all
19:39for the established
19:40laws
19:40and protocols.
19:45as we might have
19:46expected
19:47Jesus had a good
19:48reply
19:48saying that
19:49it was not
19:49appropriate
19:50for the disciples
19:51to fast
19:52in sadness
19:53when they had only
19:54just met him
19:56or indeed
19:56Levi had only
19:58met Jesus
19:58that very day.
20:01There would be
20:01plenty of time
20:02for the disciples
20:03to fast
20:03while they were
20:04waiting for the
20:05resurrection
20:05and the arrival
20:06of the Holy Spirit
20:07in the future.
20:11Fasting
20:12is not
20:12some empty
20:13ritual
20:13that we go through
20:14twice a week
20:15because it is
20:16expected of us.
20:19It is a spiritual
20:20exercise for us
20:21a day
20:22or more
20:23of pain
20:23and suffering
20:24as we remember
20:25Jesus
20:26and what he went
20:27through
20:27on our behalf.
20:31It should never
20:31be something
20:32that we inflict
20:33upon ourselves
20:33for show
20:34in order that
20:36others can see
20:36how pious
20:37we are
20:39indeed
20:40should we ever
20:41even tell
20:42others
20:42we are fasting.
21:03We praise you
21:05Lord God
21:06may I ask you
21:08to be our Lord
