01:22yet they would not be satisfied with anything except your death
01:28grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience that I may both lead a godly life

02:32I may in patience possess my soul
02:36praise honor and glory be to you o christ

03:16and be always glad to think and speak well of any man
03:23praise honor and glory be to you o christ
03:25who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod
03:29and who would not gratify his curious eyes
03:35by the performance of any miracle
03:37because he did not have his own salvation at heart
03:40and did there in this way
03:43teach us to avoid all ostentation
03:46before the great ones of this world
03:49pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility
03:53mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory
03:58grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man

04:10in a true spirit of humility and meekness
04:17praise honor and glory be to you o christ
04:20who didn't refuse to be sent to nothing
04:23by Herod and his men of war
04:25nor to be clothed in a white garment
04:28and to be mocked and laughed at
04:29as though a fool and a madman
04:32give me grace o lord
04:33to choose rather to be an outcast with you
04:36than to be glorious in the world
04:39may I think it better and more honorable
04:41to suffer reproach for your name
04:44than to prosper in the vain honors of the world
04:49give me grace
04:50that truly acknowledging my own sins
04:52and my own unworthiness
04:54I may be as nothing in my own sight

05:00and daily lament
05:02over my own weakness and wretchedness
05:06praise honor and glory be to you o christ
05:08who was sent back with shame
05:10clothed in a false garment
05:12from Herod the Pilate
05:13and in all things
05:15obeyed your enemies
05:16going backwards and forwards
05:18according to their pleasure
05:20grant that I may not shrink
05:22from being despised
05:24nor refuse obedience
05:25even to those
05:26who wish nothing but bad for me
05:31give me grace
05:32to have no feelings
05:33for the things of this world
05:35but to think of and care for
05:36and love you alone
05:39may you alone be my honor
05:41my delight
05:42my love
05:43my glory
05:43and my joy
05:46Amen
05:50O Lord open our lips
05:52and our mouths
05:54will sing your praise
06:02O be joyful in the Lord
06:06from the lands
06:09serve the Lord with gladness
06:12and come in all his prayers
06:16and with a song
06:18be sure that the Lord
06:22he is God
06:25it is he that hath made us
06:28that lost me ourselves
06:30we are his people
06:33and the sheep of his pasture
06:38who put your way
06:40into his peace with mercy
06:44and into his cross with grace
06:49be thankful to him
06:52and speak full of his name
06:57O the Lord is gracious
07:01his mercy is everlasting
07:06and his truth and joy
07:10from generation to generation
07:20glory be to the Father
07:24and to the Son
07:27and to the Holy Ghost
07:31as it was in the beginning
07:35his love and ever shall be
07:41world without end
07:48Amen
07:59my heart
08:04so long as my snow
08:08of the new God
08:11my sight
08:13is not first for God
08:16Yea, the unfaithing God
08:21When shall I come to me
08:25In all the presence of God
08:28Might this be my peace, dear God
08:34Every day is there to me
08:39Where it flow, thy God
08:42Now, the unfaithing devil
08:46I've walked, I've walked by myself
08:51For I went with a multitude
08:55And brought me forth into the heart of God
09:01In the voice of great and great singing
09:06Now, now, I can see the glory of God
09:11Why art thou so full of heavy airs for my soul
09:18And why art thou so described every
09:24Could I trust me, Lord
09:29For I will lift thee in heaven
09:33For the hell on his countenance
09:36By God, my soul is next within me
09:43Therefore will I remember thee concerning the land of Jordan
09:48And the little hill of Jordan
09:53And the little hill of Jordan
09:57And the little hill of Jordan
09:58Because of the noise of the Lord's hands
10:02O thy greatest tools of honor, O Lord hath granted his loving kindness in the day and in the night
10:17season will I sing of him, and made my prayer unto the God of my life.
10:26I will say unto the God of my strength, why hast thou forgotten you? Why, God, that's heavenly, one, the
10:40enemy of Christ?
10:42Why, God, that's heavenly, one, the enemy of Christ?
11:09Why, God, that's heavenly, one, the enemy of Christ?
11:42A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 4.
11:48Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus, Rabbi, eat something.
11:54But he said to them, I have food to eat that you know nothing about.
12:00So the disciples began to say to one another, no one brought him anything to eat, did they?
12:07Jesus said to them, my food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete
12:13his work.
12:15Don't you say, there are four more months and then comes the harvest?
12:20I tend to look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest.
12:25The one who reaps, the one who reaps, the one who reaps, so that the one who sows and the
12:33one who reaps can rejoice together.
12:38For in this instance the same is true.
12:40One sows and another reaps.
12:44I sent you to reap what you did not work for.
12:47Others have laboured and you have entered into their labour.
12:53Now many Samaritans from the town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, he told
12:59me everything I ever did.
13:02So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them and he stayed there two days.
13:08And because of his word, many more believed.
13:12They said to the woman, no longer do we believe because of your words, but we have heard for ourselves
13:18and we know that this one really is the saviour of the world.
13:25After two days, he departed from there to Galilee.
13:30For Jesus himself had testified that the prophet has no honour in his own country.
13:38So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, because they had seen all the things he had done
13:45in Jerusalem at the feast, for they themselves had gone to the feast.
13:51Now when he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water into wine, and there was
13:58a certain royal official whose son was sick.
14:01And when he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged to
14:07him to come down and heal his son, who was on the point of death.
14:12Jesus said to him, unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.
14:19Sir, the official said to him, come down before my child dies.
14:25Jesus said to him, go home, your son will live.
14:31The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off again for home.
14:37And whilst he was on the way down, his slaves met him and told them his son was going to
14:43live.
14:44So he asked them the time when the condition began to improve, and they told him,
14:50yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon, the fever left him.
14:54And the father realized that this was the time that Jesus had said to him, your son will live.
15:01And he himself believed along with his entire household.
15:07Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
15:28The disciples struggled sometimes to understand what it was that Jesus was telling them.
15:36Here we have yet again another picture which Jesus used to try and explain.
15:43We should be clear that he did not mean he was not going to eat, but that there were two
15:48types of food, the earthly and the spiritual.
15:53For us as Christians, both are essential.
15:59Jesus also revealed that we are all part of a great team.
16:03We are all both sowing and reaping.
16:08We sow the seeds of faith and from time to time, we are able to reap a soul for Christ.
16:15Equally, others may come along and reap what we have sown, or alternatively, we can reap what others have sown.
16:24Do we have a balanced diet, comprising both heavenly and earthly food?
16:30What do we need to change in our diet?
16:35This woman was the instrument of bringing her townspeople to the Savior.
16:42The first step of Samaritan faith was dependent on her testimony.
16:49Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him.
16:52Because of the saying of the woman who testified,
16:55He told me all that I ever did.
17:00Faith is essentially the belief of testimony.
17:05It depends therefore upon evidence.
17:08Faith is the substance of things hoped for.
17:11The evidence of things not seen.
17:16The Samaritans were entitled to the higher blessing.
17:20Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
17:25We must believe the facts of the gospel history upon testimony.
17:29Or we cannot receive them at all.
17:34Faith rests firmly upon testimony that is verified by experience.
17:41This Samaritan woman's experience ended all day.
17:49As a result of the faith of the Samaritans,
17:52they sought a closer contact with Jesus.
17:54They besought him that he tarry with them.
18:00Though faith rests on knowledge,
18:03it always longs for a fuller knowledge.
18:07Though Jesus was a Jew,
18:09they sought immediate fellowship with him.
18:16Their conduct is very different from that of the Jews,
18:20who were not at all interested
18:22in what he might have to tell them
18:24during his eight-month stay in their midst,
18:27but merely looked for signs.
18:30Here in Samaria,
18:32the Samaritans were not apparently
18:35interested in signs,
18:37but in teaching.
18:40So Jesus complied with their request,
18:43though he knew that it might involve him
18:46in the suggestion and open him to the accusation
18:50that he was a Samaritan.
18:57The faith of the Samaritans was strengthened,
18:59and more disciples were made
19:01during the two days' stay at Zika,
19:04and many more believed
19:05because of his own work.
19:09His word was effectual to confirm their faith.
19:12It came to them not in word only,
19:14but in power.
19:16For it was the power of God to salvation.
19:18For we have heard him ourselves.
19:22This is the language of personal experience.
19:28Their personal experience was final and satisfactory,
19:31and know that this is indeed Christ,
19:35Saviour of the world.
19:39Mark the absence of all narrow particularism.
19:44They knew from the Scriptures
19:45that in Abraham and his seed,
19:47all nations of the earth shall be blessed.
19:51Jesus had brought this ancient promise
19:53to their notice.
19:56And they recognised Jesus no longer as a mere prophet,
19:59but as a redeemer.
20:02Salvation may be of the Jews,
20:05but the Samaritans are the first to accept it
20:07in the Mass.
20:10The faith of the Samaritans
20:13is the condemnation of the Jews' unbelief.
20:22We then switch to the arrival of Jesus in Galilee,
20:25where we read,
20:26he was made welcome.
20:28But note that he did not return
20:29to the principal town of Galilee,
20:32Nazareth,
20:33for he was without honour there,
20:35and only too aware of how hip-strong
20:36its inhabitants were.
20:40No,
20:41he went to Galilee,
20:41carefully avoiding the places
20:43where he would be rejected and scorned,
20:47going instead to Canaan,
20:48where he had performed his first miracle.
20:54It would seem that the Galilians in Canaan
20:56were a different group,
20:58I'm sure,
20:58together,
20:59being a devout group of people,
21:01and they were all well aware of Jesus
21:03and his ministry,
21:04because many of their number
21:06had been to Jerusalem
21:07and seen him there.
21:10This would have been no small journey for them,
21:13and we can,
21:14I think,
21:15safely assume
21:16that they were God-fearing people,
21:20genuine people,
21:22who saw in Jesus
21:23something wonderful,
21:24even if they were not quite sure
21:26what it was they saw.
21:30Talking of journeys,
21:32the official,
21:33who had travelled from Cana to Capernaum,
21:36sorry,
21:36from Capernaum to Cana,
21:39had also undertaken
21:41a significant journey
21:42in order to meet with Jesus.
21:46We get a clue
21:47as to the scale of his journey
21:48from verses 51 and 52,
21:50where we read that
21:51after a day of travelling,
21:52he was met by his slaves,
21:55who were coming
21:55to tell him the good news.
21:59From this,
21:59we can conclude
22:00that the journey
22:01was one of at least
22:02two,
22:03and possibly even three days,
22:05on foot,
22:06in the heat
22:07and dust
22:08of the mountain road.
22:11Little wonder then
22:12that the official
22:13received a miracle
22:14from Jesus,
22:16for he must have set out
22:17immediately
22:17on hearing the news
22:18of the whereabouts of Jesus,
22:20and gone looking for him.
22:23What an example
22:24to us
22:26how much effort
22:27do we put
22:28into our walk
22:29searching for Jesus.
22:33This was a man
22:34who was prepared
22:35to drop everything
22:35on the news
22:36that Jesus
22:37may be three travelling days
22:39away,
22:40and to go looking for him.
22:44For us these days,
22:45journeys are not
22:45such great things,
22:48and in the car,
22:49the journey
22:49from Capernaum
22:50to Canaan
22:51would not have
22:52taken that long.
22:53But for this man,
22:55we are not talking
22:56about taking a shopping trip,
22:57but a significant expedition,
23:00just in the hope
23:01that he might find Jesus
23:03in the belief
23:04that he could heal
23:05his son.
23:09A few words
23:10will make it evident
23:11then that men
23:12are unreasonable
23:13and inconsistent
23:14in refusing to believe
23:16the creed
23:16before they see
23:17the script of proof.
23:20I would ask
23:21in the first place
23:22whether we reason
23:24and prove
23:24before we act
23:25in the affairs
23:26of this life.
23:28In ordinary
23:29legal matters,
23:30for instance,
23:31a man thinks
23:32it's safe
23:33to go by the opinion
23:34of men in general.
23:36In extraordinary,
23:38he consults men
23:39learned in the law,
23:41feeling too vividly
23:42how much is at stake
23:43to trust his own judgment.
23:45He cannot afford
23:47in such a case
23:47to indulge
23:48his love of argument
23:50disputing
23:51and criticising.
23:53No,
23:54this love of argument
23:55can only be indulged
23:56in a case
23:57in which we have
23:58no fears.
23:59It is reserved
24:00for religious matters.
24:03Surely the general opinion
24:05of all men around,
24:07and that from the first,
24:09the belief
24:09of our teachers,
24:10friends and superiors,
24:12and of all Christians
24:13in all times and places,
24:15that the doctrine
24:16of the Holy Trinity
24:17must be held
24:19in order
24:19to salvation,
24:20is a good reason
24:22for us to believe
24:23it ourselves,
24:24even if we are unable
24:26to prove it
24:26in all parts
24:27from Scripture.
24:28As the general belief
24:30of how the law stands,
24:31and the opinion
24:32of skilful lawyers
24:33affect the law,
24:34is a reason
24:36for following
24:36their view
24:37of the law,
24:38even though we cannot
24:39verify that view
24:40ourselves
24:41from the books
24:42of the law.
24:48It may be said
24:49that the doctrine
24:50of the Trinity
24:51is both mysterious
24:52and unlikely.
24:55I consider
24:56that this mysterious view
24:58is,
24:58as far as it proves anything,
24:59a recommendation
25:01of the doctrine.
25:04I do not say
25:05that it is true
25:05because it is
25:06mysterious,
25:08but that if it be true
25:09it cannot help
25:10be mysterious.
25:13It would be strange
25:15indeed
25:15if any doctrine
25:16concerning God's
25:17infinite and eternal
25:18nature were not
25:19mysterious.
25:22Let us learn
25:23from this
25:24to walk
25:25by faith.
25:29A subtle infidel
25:30might soon
25:31perplex any one
25:32of us.
25:32Of course he might.
25:34Our state
25:35and warfare
25:36is one of faith.
25:38Let us aim at,
25:39let us reach after
25:40and as it were
25:41clutch
25:42at the things
25:43of the next world.
25:45There is a voice
25:46within us
25:46which assures us
25:47that there is
25:48something higher
25:49than that.
25:50We cannot
25:51analyse it,
25:52define it
25:52or contemplate
25:54what it is
25:54that so
25:55whispers to us.
25:57It has no shape
25:58or material form.
26:01There is that
26:01in our hearts
26:02which prompts us
26:03to religion
26:04and which
26:05condemns
26:06and chastises
26:07sin.
26:08And this yearning
26:09of our nature
26:10is met
26:10and sustained.
26:11It finds an object
26:13to rest upon
26:13when it hears
26:15of the existence
26:15of the all-powerful
26:17all-gracious
26:18creator.
26:20It incites
26:21in us
26:21a noble faith
26:23that we cannot
26:24see.
26:25Let us exercise
26:26a similar faith
26:27as regard
26:29the mysteries
26:29of Revelation
26:30also.
26:36Let us pray.
26:40O God,
26:41the strength
26:42of all
26:42who put
26:43their trust
26:43in you,
26:45mercifully
26:45accept our prayers
26:47and because
26:48through the weakness
26:49of our mortal nature
26:50we can do
26:51no good thing
26:52without you,
26:53grant us
26:54the help
26:54of your grace
26:55that in keeping
26:57your commandments
26:58we may please you
27:00both in will
27:01and deed.
27:03Through Jesus
27:04Christ
27:04our Lord.
27:05Amen.
27:11May the Lord
27:12bless us
27:13and keep us
