00:22Let us pray.
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were given up to the will of your
00:32persecutors, suffered many torments when they took off the purple robe, which was stuck to your wounds, and put upon
00:40you your own clothes.
00:42Grant that after I have put off the clothing of this body, I may be clad with the robe of
00:48perfect charity, and that I may be adorned with your merit, and through your mercy be introduced as an adopted
00:57son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, in the midst of reproach and injury, bore your cross
01:07with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders.
01:13Wearied and panting for breath, you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight.
01:19Give me grace to take hold of the cross of self-denial with ardent devotion, and to imitate with the
01:25most fervent of charity the example of your virtues, and to follow you in humility even unto death.
01:35Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were led from the city with two thieves,
01:42did not refuse to be pressed upon and thrust, hastened and to be afflicted in many ways.
01:49Draw me after you, that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely deny, forsake, and
01:57go out of myself.
01:59Give me grace to think of you alone, and to find no joy except in you, my Redeemer.
02:07Grant that I may love you alone, and may return love for love, may I earnestly seek after you, and
02:14live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when bowed down by the weight of your cross, at
02:24length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled with gall.
02:34May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent to any impure or
02:43unlawful pleasure.
02:45But may I take my food in moderation, to the glory of your name, and may hunger and thirst after
02:51you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on Mount
03:04Calvary,
03:04and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain.
03:17Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty, and never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life, for the glory of your name.
03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection, and grant me a holy intent, with pious desires, renewing within
03:41me daily a most pure love for yourself.
03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon the wood
03:53of the cross,
03:54and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed and fastened thereto.
04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet, to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable charity,
04:19when you did of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored, and your feet to be pierced
04:25through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by a perfect love of you.
04:31Pierce it and fix it to yourself with the nail of your sweetest love,
04:36and shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts, and all my affections.
04:44Amen.
04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:12O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:17O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:28O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:35O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:41O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:42O Lord, open our lips, and our lips shall sing your praise.
05:54The Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
06:17Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
06:33is now and ever shall be,
06:38world without end. Amen.
06:47Amen.
06:50Amen.
07:03Amen.
07:08Amen.
07:10Amen.
07:10Amen.
07:14Amen.
07:15And I might be whom I will trust, my Father, the whole voice of God, my salvation and my refuge.
07:31I will go upon the Lord which is worthy to be praised.
07:39So shall I be saved from my enemies.
07:48The swallows of terror have compassed me, and the overdrawings of ungodliness made me afraid.
08:03The things of hell came about me, but snares of death over took me.
08:16In my trouble I will call upon my Lord, and complain unto my God.
08:28So shall he hear my voice, not only stories ever, and my complaint shall come before him.
08:42He shall enter me only to his ears.
08:49The earth trembled and quake, the very foundations more so the hills shook, and were removed because he was wrought.
09:05There went a smoke out in his presence, and the consuming fire out of his mouth, so that cause my
09:19kingdom had it.
09:22He bowed the heavens also, and came him down, and it was dark and like his feet.
09:36He roped upon the shepherds, and did dry.
09:44He kept lying upon the wings of the wind.
09:50He made darkness his secret place, his familiar round about him, with dark water and lily clouds to come away.
10:10At the risers of the wind.
10:14At the risers of his presence, his lovely room, hail stones and coals of fire.
10:25The Lord who saw slander out of heaven, and the highest gave his thunder, hail stones and coals of fire.
10:38He set out of heaven.
10:42He set out his arrows and scattered them.
10:46He vouched for the lightnings and destroyed them.
10:52The springs of the waters were seen, and the foundations of the groundwork were discovered,
11:04that may shine in the purest of fire.
11:08The light of your fire.
11:13The light of using fire.
11:17The light of the fire.
11:20The light of the fire.
11:26The light of the fire.
11:29He was, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, one without end. Amen.
12:11A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 2.
12:17It came about in those days that an order went out from Caesar Augustus that there was to be a
12:23numbering of all the world.
12:26This was the first numbering which was made when Quirinius was ruler of Syria.
12:32All men went to be numbered, every one to his town.
12:36Joseph went up from Galilee out of the town of Nazareth into Judea to Bethlehem, the town of David,
12:44because he was of the house and family of David, to be put on the list with Mary, his future
12:50wife, who was about to become a mother.
12:55While they were there, the time came for her to give birth, and she had her first son.
13:01Folding him in linen, she put him to rest in the place where the cattle had their food, because there
13:07was no room for them in the inn.
13:11In the same country there were keepers of sheep in the fields, watching over their flock by night.
13:16An angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord was shining all around them.
13:23Fear came upon them, but the angel said,
13:25Have no fear, for truly I give you good news of great joy, which will be for all the people.
13:32For on this day, in the town of David, a saviour has come to birth, who is Christ the Lord.
13:38This is the sign.
13:40You will see a young child folded in linen, in the place where the cattle have their food.
13:47Suddenly there was with the angel a great band of spirits from heaven, giving praise to God and saying,
13:54Glory to God in the highest and on the earth peace among men with whom he is well pleased.
14:02When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the keepers of the sheep said to one another,
14:09Let us now go to Bethlehem, and see this thing which has come about, which the Lord has made clear
14:16to us.
14:18And they went quickly, and saw Mary, Joseph, and the child in the place where the cattle had their food.
14:25When they saw it, they gave them an account of the things which had been said to them about the
14:30child.
14:32All those to whose ears it came were full of wonder at the things said by the keepers of the
14:37sheep.
14:39Mary kept all these words in her heart, and gave much thought to them.
14:45Then the keepers of the sheep went back, giving glory and praise to God for all the things which had
14:50come to their ears,
14:51and which they had seen, as it had been said to them.
14:56This is the word of the Lord.
14:59Thanks be to God.
15:05Two travellers coming up from Galilee approached the city of David.
15:10The knowledge they possessed of the event in which the glories of David's house were to culminate,
15:15must have invested every feature with a particular sacredness of interest.
15:22Note Dean Stanley's description of Bethlehem,
15:24on the crest of a ridge of black hills terraced by vineyards.
15:30As seen by Joseph and Mary, what a stream of patriotic memories,
15:34matched with the inspirations which spring from the sense of ancestry,
15:39must have flowed over their souls.
15:42There is the scene of the notable gleaning of the Gentile Moabitess,
15:47who had accompanied Naomi from those mighty hills,
15:51which rear their pinnacles in the distance behind.
15:56There Jesse, with his seven stalwart sons, had lived.
16:00In those fields and gorges, the youngest of the seven,
16:03had learnt to sling his stones and sing his psalms,
16:07had been prepared for the future which lay before him.
16:12From that city had come the mightiest of David's warriors,
16:17Jacob, Jehoah, and Abishai, and others.
16:21And look, there too by the gate is the famous well of Bethlehem,
16:26of which David had longed to drink.
16:30But faint as he was, would not,
16:32because the drawing of its water had been at the cost of life,
16:36strength, and love.
16:40Manifold is the appeal to the heart of the pilgrims,
16:44who, lowly as their condition is,
16:46are skions of the Israel's royal house.
16:51They are nearing the place of which the prophecy has said in Micah chapter 5,
16:56Out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel,
17:02whose things forth are from old, from everlasting.
17:08They know that the fulfillment is at hand.
17:12Where should they go?
17:13It is high time that one should be at rest.
17:16Shall they go to the inn, the Kahn, or the Caravanserai?
17:21See Farrah's sketch,
17:22that strange shelter for both man and beast.
17:26For the inn is full.
17:28There is no place in it,
17:30or such as they.
17:31But the necessity is urgent.
17:35And their refuge,
17:36according to a tradition mentioned by Justin Martop,
17:39is a grotto or cave in the limestone rock
17:42on which the village stands,
17:44used as a stable for horses and a pen for cattle.
17:48The horse's manger will be the cradle for the King of Kings.
17:53Born there and thus,
17:55the precise date of their birth
17:57is not apparently determinable.
18:02From the limestone cavern,
18:04we are taken by the evangelist
18:05to the long grassy slopes
18:07which stretch down from the east of the Jewish city.
18:12Hidden in some nook of these slopes
18:14rested, pious shepherds.
18:17Shepherds have always been a meditative class of men,
18:20accustomed to the sweet silence of nature,
18:24and apart from the bustle and stir of its city,
18:27invited to quiet communion with their own hearts.
18:31It was seen that these shepherds
18:33were men of the spirit of Simeon.
18:36They quickly understood the message given to them.
18:39Calmly and promptly,
18:40they responded once,
18:41as if it were the intimation
18:44of that for which they had been waiting.
18:48Let us go and see.
18:51There they lie,
18:52nursed in devout and lonely thought,
18:54unaware of the myriad, myriads
18:56of the shining that hover over them.
19:00It is the moment of a pause,
19:02of a hush in nature.
19:03And look,
19:04the angel of the Lord comes to them.
19:07In an instant,
19:09a presence,
19:09a glory is a rhythm.
19:11And first into their hearts
19:13is poured the gospel
19:14for all the ages.
19:17Of this gospel,
19:19note,
19:20its substance,
19:21born to you this gain,
19:24God's gift to men,
19:25to sinners,
19:26especially to those who believe,
19:28the Saviour which is Christ,
19:30the Anointed One,
19:32He of whom the Prophet spoke,
19:34and of whom David,
19:36the Shepherd of Israel,
19:38free-figured.
19:39The sent,
19:41not by,
19:42but from,
19:43God,
19:44from the depths of the Divine Personality.
19:48The Son,
19:49from the bosom of the Father Himself,
19:51Christ the Lord,
19:53the Jehovah,
19:54to whom every knee shall bow,
19:56the Ruler,
19:57who shall restore the lost
19:58and unite the scattered,
20:00and fulfil the kingdom
20:01which is righteousness
20:03and peace and joy.
20:07Of the character of this gospel,
20:09good tidings of great joy,
20:11the most blessed message
20:14ever proclaimed,
20:15one of unspeakable blessedness.
20:19A joy to which
20:20no bounds can be set,
20:22which no geographical limit
20:24can measure,
20:25which no thought of class
20:26or race or sect
20:28can impeter.
20:29Joy to all
20:31the world's people.
20:35of the sign,
20:37the gospel,
20:38a baby wrapped
20:39in swaddling clothes
20:40lying in a manger.
20:43The babe is the sign
20:44of the kingdom,
20:45it is the token
20:46of the king.
20:48Except you become
20:49as little children,
20:50you shall in no way
20:51enter into the kingdom
20:52of heaven.
20:55And now suddenly,
20:57as the sign is given,
20:58a blaze of song
20:59spreads throughout
21:00the expanse of heaven.
21:01And like circles
21:03widening around
21:04upon a clear blue river,
21:07orb after orb,
21:09the wondrous sound
21:09is echoed on forever.
21:12Glory to God on high,
21:15on earth be peace,
21:16and love towards men
21:18of love,
21:19salvation,
21:20and release.
21:23The announcement of the birth
21:25is made to shepherds,
21:26but why were they selected
21:28for this great honour?
21:31Points of fitness
21:32may be traced.
21:33Was not the first blood
21:35of sacrifice
21:36of Abel,
21:37that of the keeper
21:38of sheep?
21:39Was not the chosen type
21:41and earthly root
21:42of the Christ,
21:42a shepherd,
21:43taken from the sheepfold?
21:46Is not one of the favourite
21:47symbols of the world's
21:49saviour,
21:49the good shepherd?
21:50Is not the saviour's work,
21:52that of him who leaves
21:54the ninety and nine,
21:55and goes after the sheep
21:56which is lost?
21:58Of all earthly things,
22:00are not the pastoral life
22:02and the spirit
22:02of the nearest correspondence
22:04to the life and spirit
22:05of the incarnate
22:06Son of God?
22:08And as to the gospel
22:09that was preached,
22:11is there not a truth
22:12in the quaint language
22:13of the old writer?
22:15It fell not out amiss
22:17that shepherds there were.
22:18The news fitted them well.
22:20It well agreed
22:21to tell shepherds
22:22of the yearning
22:23of a strange lamb,
22:24such a lamb
22:25as might take away
22:26the sin of the world,
22:28such a lamb
22:29as they might send
22:30to the ruler
22:31of this world
22:31for a present.
22:35Anyway,
22:35it is not
22:36to supercilious Pharisee,
22:38nor to Sadducee
22:40cold and dry as dust,
22:41nor to Aesthetic
22:43and Separatist,
22:44nor to Herodian
22:46worldly and crafty,
22:48nor to the mighty
22:49or to the noble
22:50that the first tidings
22:51of great joy
22:52are brought.
22:54The first preacher
22:55is the heavenly angel,
22:56and the first congregation
22:58lowly, simple men
23:00who are doing
23:01their duty
23:01in the place
23:02God has appointed to.
23:06Thence comes
23:07the lesson to us.
23:08Heaven is always
23:10near to the dutiful.
23:12Those who watch
23:13faithfully
23:13what has been
23:14given to their charge,
23:15not seeking
23:16some great thing
23:18to do,
23:19not hurried
23:20and restless
23:21in their work,
23:22but caring
23:22for the things,
23:23many or few,
23:25over which
23:26God has placed them,
23:28are close
23:29to that gate
23:30of the celestial kingdom
23:31through which
23:32there peels
23:33the music.
23:34Blessed are the pure
23:35in heart,
23:36for they shall
23:37see God.
23:41Two points
23:42in this portion
23:42of the narrative
23:43may be considered.
23:46First of all,
23:46the conduct
23:47of the shepherds
23:48when the tidings
23:48of the birth
23:49were given to them.
23:51On the withdrawal
23:52of the heavenly vision
23:53they say,
23:53Let us now go
23:55even to Bethlehem
23:57and see this thing
23:58which has come to pass.
24:02The flocks
24:03are somehow
24:03attended to.
24:05This is a matter
24:06to be at once
24:06attended.
24:07A word of God,
24:09a voice of the
24:10Holy Spirit
24:11in the heart,
24:11a command or a duty
24:12pertaining to
24:13the heavenly life,
24:14claims precedence
24:16over all other claims.
24:18Seek you first
24:19the kingdom of God.
24:22Promptopedience
24:23is the way
24:24of blessing.
24:25They came with haste.
24:27Yes,
24:28the king's business
24:29requires haste,
24:30never delay.
24:31St Paul
24:32acted in the spirit
24:33of the shepherds
24:34when,
24:35God having been pleased
24:36to reveal his son
24:37in him,
24:39immediately he conferred
24:40not with flesh
24:41and blood.
24:44And secondly,
24:45the conduct
24:45of Mary.
24:46The shepherds
24:47eagerly recounted
24:49their wonderful tale
24:49and all the people
24:51who heard wondered.
24:53But Mary
24:54kept all these sayings
24:55and pondered them
24:56in her heart.
24:59The wonder of the people
25:00soon passed away.
25:03It was but
25:04as the morning cloud
25:05and the early morning dew.
25:08Religious feelings
25:09are conserved
25:10and deepened
25:11through reflection
25:12and prayer.
25:14Blessed secret,
25:15the keeping
25:16and pondering
25:17in the heart.
25:23let us pray.
25:26Almighty and everlasting
25:28God,
25:28who has given us
25:30your servant's grace
25:31by the confession
25:33of a true faith
25:34to acknowledge
25:35the glory
25:36of the eternal trinity
25:37in the power
25:39of your divine majesty
25:40to worship
25:41the unity.
25:42We beseech you
25:44that you keep us
25:45steadfast
25:46in this faith
25:47and evermore
25:48defend us
25:49from all adversities.
25:51Who lives
25:52and reigns
25:53one God
25:54world without end.
25:55Amen.
26:01May the Lord bless us
26:03and keep us
26:04from all evil
26:05bringing us
26:07to everlasting life.
26:09Amen.
26:11Amen.
26:14Amen.
