00:00Andrew Barry was on with the Modern Boys and Daryl earlier today and talked about
00:07Brendan Sorsby. If you guys remember, Todd Munkin was anti-Sorsby about a week ago.
00:12Well, more than a week ago, here was Andrew Barry today.
00:15I really asked you questions. I asked, number one, is this a bad person or did they make a
00:19bad decision? And then the second piece is like, okay, what are they doing after the fact,
00:23whether it's really where it's to correct the behavior? Like, is this a pattern of decision
00:27making? And if so, have they done something to stop the pattern or is this an isolated incident?
00:32Because the reality of it is like, we're all going to screw up. And some certainly mistakes are
00:36greater in magnitude than others. You know, the most important thing, you know, in Brendan's case
00:42is like what he does, what he does from here. Obviously it's a great first step to get the
00:47help that he needs, but then it's like, what is around him? What is he doing to make sure that
00:52like he can maintain healthy habits moving forward? And so it seems like it's a very good start there.
00:57Obviously I don't know all the details at this point, you know, within society, so to speak,
01:02I think we could all stand to use a little bit more grace.
01:04Now, I just think, and I don't disagree. I think maybe my favorite point was that last line.
01:09And I would say, in addition to grace, just empathy, which we have not in the social media
01:15era, we've continued to chip away. It's societal empathy. I think we still have it on a one-to-one
01:19level when we know the person we've got that, but I'll get off my soapbox now.
01:23Um, I also think that's a fascinating way in a fascinating insight into how Andrew views
01:31all players and particularly Deshaun Watson. And well, I would say Deshaun, I would say
01:36Mike Hall jr. I would say any of the Perry on Winfrey and the Browns have not had the best
01:42batting average for that under Andrew Barry, but I, you're not going to, if you're trying to assess
01:48the person and what they truly are capable of in a three month, three month kind of time period.
01:53Well, and the follow-up I would have had in this is, uh, how do you determine whether someone is
01:56genuinely taking accountability versus simply just saying the right things? Yeah. You know,
02:00like if you're going to sit there and the big, your big, you know, resolution on these guys is
02:04I'm going to see if they made a bad decision and if they're a bad person versus whether or not
02:10they're actually just, or sorry, bad person versus bad decision. And so like, if you, if you walk
02:14away, if the whole goal is I got to walk away thinking this person is a good person that just
02:18made a bad life choice. If I want it to be that you're a good person, I'm sure I can
02:24find reasons
02:25to think that you are. Well, and I think specific to what you're saying, I think it would be,
02:29I think it's easy to sit in my chair and say, well, if I was going to do that, I
02:33would need an
02:34absolute certainty that that's, that's a perfect world mentality. I don't have any skin in the game.
02:40So for Andrew, I think you're just looking for enough proof that it is a good person that made
02:47a bad decision. And again, that's where it, that's one of what I think will have to be the
02:52toughest jobs of being a general manager. But I think within the answer, I do think he told you
02:59what I think is the truth the next year or really the next six months and how Brennan Soarsby comports
03:05himself will have a massive impact on how the Browns specifically view him. If they're in a
03:12position to draft him six to eight months from now, and they're, you have a top four pick and he
03:17might be there when, when they draft him. Well, and the second part of this, Nick, is the idea of,
03:21did they do anything to correct the behavior? And so, uh, and here's where I will say, it seems as
03:26of now, Andrew Barry did make that right assessment when it came to Deshaun Watson in that, uh, we've had
03:31enough time now here with Deshaun and we have not had any sort of allegations pop up again. And so
03:35like clearly in, in his evaluation of Deshaun, he has to find out for himself if he thinks he's a
03:40good person, whatever. But he felt like Deshaun did enough to correct that behavior. Same thing
03:45applies for Soarsby. A year from now, it's going to be so much easier for people to gamble bad, bad,
03:51worse, bad usage there. But for people to, uh, to take a chance on him, it's all just going to
03:55work
03:55into gambling phrases, isn't it? I threw bet out there. I threw it all out there. Uh, but it's all
04:00going to become easier because he won't have the track record of betting on his teams. And he would
04:07have said for a year, I have been able to stay clear of this for a year. I haven't, I
04:11haven't
04:11adhered to that vice. And that's, that's how he's going to ultimately win people over.
04:15And here's the thing in six to eight months in the draft process, assuming, and again,
04:20this is where Brendan has to go out and then fulfill the promise that draft Knicks have put on him.
04:26Hey, with one more year, he's got every tool to be the guy we think he can be. Well, now
04:32he's got
04:32to go deliver that on the field, but six to eight months from now, there aren't going to be 32
04:37teams
04:37that see Brennan Soarsby the same way. But I think given what Andrew Barry has done and, and how he
04:43has,
04:43uh, handled himself. And I think that answer that we played, it tells you that if this kid fulfills the
04:50prophecy at Texas tech and has them in the playoffs and he's a size, a Heisman candidate and, you know,
04:56he takes that step forward with another, you know, 15 games and he has kept his himself clean.
05:02As it relates to gambling, the Browns will be one of those teams that has, has positive things on the
05:09side. And I think that's something to remember for about six to eight months from now. Cause I don't
05:14think the Browns, if I think there are teams, if the Steelers get a pick before you, I'd be surprised
05:19if they ever took Brennan Soarsby, there are other organizations. I would be shocked if they took
05:24them. I'd be surprised if there are four quarterbacks in the draft and the Browns had the
05:28fourth pick and Brennan Soarsby was the last man standing. I'd be surprised if they didn't take
05:33him. If he did everything we said. Yeah. I mean, and it sets up using his own guidelines. It sets
05:38up
05:38for an easy trail here, right? You'd say Soarsby is a good person. I've met with them. I've talked to
05:43him. I like him. I think he just made a bad decision. And on the other side of that,
05:46you just simply say it's been a year. He clearly took the corrective choices and made himself
05:53better. And so here we are. He doesn't have a problem anymore. 216-474-0092. Did Andrew
05:58Barry open the door for Brennan Soarsby? Let's go with Dave in Doylestown. Welcome to the show,
06:03Dave in Doylestown. Hey, thanks, Nick. Thanks, JP. Yeah. One of the biggest things is just,
06:09you know, there's certain industries where like in healthcare, you can't commit fraud banking.
06:15You can't commit fraud. This guy knew what he was doing and decided to do it and hit about two
06:21thirds of it through family and friends. So I think he understood that it was wrong. I understand he
06:28can change his ways, but you know, there's just some of this where he knew it was wrong when he
06:35was
06:35doing it. Can he actually make his way back to kind of justify getting through an injunction to keep
06:42him playing and maybe to make a career out of it where in other industries, you can't.
06:48Yeah. And then that's the point here, Dave. Thank you. Is that like in, in, in his industry,
06:52in the football industry, you can make this mistake at college and still get drafted in the NFL,
06:56how you can make it in the NFL. It's a six game suspension for Calvin Ridley. Uh, they,
07:01they let you back in when you do this. They do. They've set that precedent. So this is not something
07:05that gets you excommunicated. It's going to be really interesting to see how the NFL handles this in,
07:09in about six to eight, eight months. Do you think we're going to have, I am genuinely curious. You
07:14think it's going to be harsher penalties? We're going to have it. Are we going to, we're going to
07:17ramp this up or are we going to go the other direction? I'm not entirely sure, but could I see
07:22there be a double D double jeopardy? Yes. Cause the NCAA for years, it was just always assumed
07:27that if this happened, it was a death to your program. It was not just a death to you death
07:30to
07:30your program. And now we got a, well, a toothless NCAA that can't even make a decision on this
07:35anyway, or have the power to make a decision on it. And we have a, basically a two game self
07:39-imposed
07:40ban. It just wouldn't surprise me. I don't know because the NFL has changed so much since the
07:44Jim Trestle show clause, right? Since, uh, what was there? Since they told, since they told
07:49Sharon Moore to go away for a weekend vacation with his mistress. Yes. Which Nope. It's a Friday.
07:552-1-6-4-7-4-0-9-2. Did Barry open the door for Soarsby?
