00:00Scott Petrick, who's on the Wise Heart Right, We Make It Right, Call Kyle Right Hotline.
00:05Of course, you can always catch him, you know, Chronicle Telegram, he's always hanging out
00:10all over the place, brownzone.com, he's got us taken care of.
00:14Scott, how are you?
00:15I'm good, how are you doing?
00:16We're good, how was it?
00:17What did we learn about the rookies this week?
00:19Hey, guys.
00:21Yeah, I like being out there, you get to watch football practice in May, which is always
00:24nice, get a look at these guys who I haven't seen up close in person before.
00:30So, you know, I think it's beneficial, you know, I mean, we're talking about Taylor
00:33Green, the dude's big, has a big arm, runs really fast, is raw, which we all knew.
00:41The receivers, you know, Casey Concepcion looks quick.
00:44Denzel Boston, I was impressed with.
00:46We knew he was big, I hadn't seen him play a ton, you know, I mean, we'd watch the highlights
00:50and stuff, but to see him up close, he moves well for a guy that's 6'4", 215.
00:56You know, Todd Munkin talked about how quick his feet are getting him out of breaks, and
01:00I thought that was obvious, watching him.
01:03So, I was impressed with him, and then you get, you know, all the offensive linemen out
01:07there, Spencer Fano going against his brother, so that was a good weekend.
01:11Scott, I'm going to quote myself here.
01:13You ready?
01:14Yeah.
01:15Teams don't draft quarterbacks in the third or fourth or fifth or sixth round thinking
01:21he may have drafted their franchise quarterback.
01:24That said, Green's going to be an awful lot of fun to watch, isn't he?
01:29Yeah, he will be, and, you know, Todd Munkin said it, that this is probably the most we're
01:33going to see him, because he'll go to fourth on the depth chart and won't be getting a ton
01:37of reps, at least, you know, with the first and second teamers.
01:42But, you know, you can see why they would take a shot at him.
01:45And you can also see why he fell to the sixth round.
01:48Now, his delivery is long, and, you know, Munkin said that he's got to tighten that up,
01:53especially for the checkdowns and the quick passes, right?
01:56The flats, the bubble screens, you can't take forever to get rid of the ball.
02:01His delivery is just really long.
02:03So, he's got to work on that footwork.
02:05Taylor Green mentioned practicing his footwork in his hotel room, and then there was one
02:09individual period where it felt like every drop back he took, the quarterback's coach,
02:13Mike Bajakian, was in there saying, no, this is how we want you to do it.
02:18So, there's plenty to fix there.
02:20You could see it in the accuracy.
02:21He'd make a bunch of really good throws, and then he'd miss a couple badly.
02:25And I think that it all comes down to mechanics, and that's the delivery, the arm motion, and
02:30the footwork.
02:30So, there's a lot of work to be done, but you see the upside because he just stands out
02:35among everybody else.
02:36The ball comes out of his hand really well and easily, you know, and he throws it down the
02:41field with velocity and power without looking like he's doing much, and then when he takes
02:45off and runs, he just eats up yardage with those long strides.
02:48So, there's a lot of reasons to think, to be intrigued by him, but you still have to
02:53be realistic in that there's a long way to go for him.
02:55Yeah, so what do you project for me?
02:57I mean, is it for him to make the team, they're going to have to get rid of probably one
03:01of
03:01the quarterbacks they did last year, or something happens with John Watson, or injury.
03:05But, otherwise, is it, okay, we got this guy, maybe we got him to get him through to the
03:09practice squad?
03:10Help me.
03:12Yeah, it's a good question.
03:14You know, I mean, there's obviously a long time for that to play out, but I could see
03:17it coming down to, do you keep both he and Dylan Gabriel, and one you try to get to the
03:23practice squad, and the other one you keep on the 53, do you try to trade, you know,
03:28I would assume Dylan Gabriel instead of Taylor Green, and then you have those three guys and
03:33you pick up somebody else, is your number four for the practice squad?
03:37Maybe a guy with more experience that's out there.
03:39I think it could go a number of different ways.
03:42What's interesting is, you know, we've talked about, Todd's talked about, and he's been
03:46asked about, could you use Taylor Green in certain situations?
03:50And I'm usually not a big proponent of that, but I think I'd make an exception for him, because
03:56I could think he's just a unique physical being as a quarterback, and you don't have
04:02Patrick Mahomes, not to take him off the field as your starting quarterback.
04:06The issue with that is, he would have to be up on your 53-man roster.
04:09So you either have to be the backup, which doesn't seem realistic at this point, or you'd
04:14have to take, you know, maybe another offensive lineman or another linebacker, you know, make
04:20them inactive to have him completely active as a third quarterback.
04:24So you would have to, or the team would have to have, believe he would bring so much value
04:28in that limited role to make it worth it.
04:32And I think that's something they'll weigh, and we'll have to see how quickly he picks
04:35everything up.
04:36But that is a, it's an interesting possibility of having a guy that's 6'6", and can, you know,
04:42sneak if you need him to sneak.
04:43Or, you know, you're on the goal line, you can, he'd probably be a better wildcat guy than
04:48Crenshaw Judkins, because he gives you the ability to throw the ball that Judkins doesn't.
04:52And we'd like to thank the Browns for giving us yet an additional storyline at quarterback.
04:57Yeah.
04:59Thank you very much.
05:02David Njoku to the Chargers.
05:06That's, we kind of assumed he wasn't coming back here, but what do you think the Browns
05:10are thinking at the tight end spot?
05:13Is it Harold Fannin all day long and then whatever?
05:16Or do you think they're going to try and develop some of these other young guys and have them
05:20they drafted to and play two or three tight ends?
05:25I think they're going to play multiple tight ends, but I think it's Harold Fannin out there,
05:29I don't know, 90%, 95% of the time.
05:33You know, they just weren't going to bring back David, and it's probably a money thing.
05:38You know, if David was willing to play for the minimum, they probably would have welcomed
05:41him back, but, you know, the report I saw said he could make up to $8 million with the
05:46Chargers.
05:47So, you know, I think that's probably why it took a while for David to find somewhere is
05:51that he needed to find the right situation, the right contract.
05:55But, yeah, I have no doubt that they'll use multiple tight ends.
05:58You know, they went out and got Jack Stoll.
06:00They already have Blake Whitehart here.
06:02They brought back Brendan Bates.
06:04Both guys have played in that multiple tight end role.
06:07Then they draft two guys on day three, and I do think one of those, I think Carson Ryan
06:12has a chance to maybe be the fullback or hybrid kind of guy, and he worked in fullback this
06:18weekend, and that's, you know, they didn't have the veterans there.
06:22But he has a body type that could be as a fullback, and he's played that some in the
06:27past.
06:28And then Royer, to me, the kid out of Cincinnati who started Ohio State, you know, he stood
06:33out to me running routes.
06:35He almost looked like a receiver, the way he was, how fluid he was running routes.
06:40So I see him more as in that mode, because he hasn't done a lot of inline blocking, kind
06:46of like a true backup to Fannin, because, you know, Fannin moves around, and he is not
06:50more like a receiver, but he's got a lot of receiver traits.
06:53So I think they can mix and match there, but I'm sure that they will use multiple tight
06:58ends plenty.
07:00How impressed are you with the wide receivers, and how much more fun does it look to see
07:04when you see big wide receivers, or wide receivers that are expected of an impact?
07:08Yeah, you know, it's tough to read too much into any of these practices, right?
07:11Right.
07:11But, having said that, given the expectation, given where they were drafted, I certainly
07:16think it's fair to assume, expect, this receiver core to be much better, at least has the potential
07:23to be much better.
07:25You know, I like what I saw in Casey Concepcion before the draft and after the draft, and I
07:29talked about Boston earlier.
07:31You know, you add those guys to Jerry Judy.
07:34You hope Isaiah Bond takes a jump in year two.
07:36And I know the Browns liked what they saw out of Isaiah Bond in year one.
07:40I think a lot of it was the quarterbacks not getting him the ball when he was open.
07:44You know, you have Cedric Tillman.
07:46What happens with him?
07:47Does he still have a role?
07:49He's been obviously inconsistent and hurt a lot in his first three years here.
07:52So I think there is reason to think, hey, this could be so much better than a year ago.
07:58And then the question becomes, do they uplift the quarterbacks, or can they overcome poor
08:05quarterback play, right?
08:05Like, how does it work?
08:07How do they complement each other?
08:08Because obviously, they all depend on each other.
08:12Scott Petrack joining us, Chronicle Telegram, BrownsZone.com, where you can read all Scott's
08:17work.
08:17You've covered, unfortunately, a lot of head coaches here.
08:22How's Todd Munkin settling in?
08:25Yeah, I think he's doing well.
08:27You know, he looks comfortable out there, and he's calling the play, so he's really active.
08:31You know, he's speaking into the headset or the walkie-talkie.
08:35You know, he called the team together a few times, and Kevin did that plenty of times,
08:39too, to, you know, to tell him one example was they were going to play without helmets.
08:44So he wanted the tempo to really decrease, because he didn't want guys getting hurt.
08:48And he said, he said, I wasn't good enough at that in the first day.
08:51He goes, we went without helmets, and guys are still playing at the wrong tempo.
08:55I let it go too long, so I stepped in on Saturday when we talked to him.
08:58But he looks comfortable, he looks happy, excited to be out there.
09:02You know, first time as an NFL head coach at 60 years old, I do think he's soaking in
09:06every minute.
09:09Defensively, Justin Jefferson, you had some pretty good stuff on your Brown Zone with
09:14Scott Petrack, brownzone.com site.
09:16Just a little thoughts on Jefferson, what kind of impact he could have on the linebacking
09:21core.
09:22Yeah, I think he's an interesting one.
09:23And as I wrote, you know, he didn't get a lot of attention during the draft, right?
09:28I think he's a seventh out of the ten picks.
09:30Defensive guy, linebacker, you know, they drafted Taylor Green after him, so he kind
09:35of got overlooked.
09:36But he's a guy that could have an impact right away, not only on special teams, guys, but
09:41the Browns don't have a number three linebacker sewn up.
09:47They got Winston Reed, they got, you know, Daniel Bukiwadson.
09:50And both guys missed all of the last season, so they need somebody to join Carson
09:55Schlesinger and Quincy Williams.
09:58And Justin Jefferson thinks he can be that guy.
10:01And, you know, he played at Alabama, had one really good year there, is an athletic
10:06guy.
10:07He's not super big.
10:08He's kind of the same size as Devin Bush, who was here the last couple years.
10:13But Justin Jefferson had an interesting quote.
10:15He was asked about, you know, Schlesinger and Williams.
10:18He's like, oh, yeah, I can't wait to play with those guys.
10:20And then I'm paraphrasing, but he's like, I can't wait to show them that I'm better
10:23than they are.
10:24So, you know, for a fifth round pick, I thought that, and he wasn't, I mean, I'm
10:29standing three feet away from him.
10:31I didn't think he was joking.
10:32I think he just said it, like, matter of factly, yeah, I'm going to show him I'm
10:35better.
10:35So, I like that attitude.
10:37Todd Munkin said you could see his love of the football in practice.
10:41He's really vocal.
10:42So, you know, for only taking two defensive guys, he and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, there's
10:47a chance that both those guys have significant roles right away.
10:52Scott, I thought it was interesting.
10:53Obviously, they draft Boston, they draft Concepcion, but there stood Jalen Rager, former first
11:00round draft choice of the Eagles, who's been a disappointment in his NFL career and has
11:06bounced around what Brown's, if he sticks, would be his fifth team in five years.
11:11What do you think about that?
11:13I like the idea of adding a veteran to that group, but I don't know if he's the guy.
11:17Yeah, I think any time a guy's a former first round pick, there's obviously something that
11:22people saw in him, and that's why he keeps getting chances.
11:24And it's not just Rager, it's a lot of guys, right?
11:27If you're a first round pick, you hang around for a while.
11:29So, yeah, I think it's a no risk move, obviously.
11:33We'll see if they sign it, right?
11:34That move probably comes in the next couple of days, at least before OTAs would start next
11:41week.
11:42But I think it's always worth taking a chance on a guy like that.
11:46And you're right, Jeff.
11:47If they added one more veteran at that position, whether it's him or not, I think that makes
11:54sense, because this is a young group.
11:56Outside of Jerry Judy, like I said, I think Cedric Tillman's future is really uncertain
12:00here.
12:01It's all young guys.
12:02So, I see the benefit of adding a veteran at that position, for sure.
12:09All right.
12:11Not like we're not going to have time to talk about this in the future, but on May 11th,
12:15tell me the depth chart for the quarterbacks overall with your veterans.
12:20Yeah, that's a good question, Andy.
12:21I think I would adjust it.
12:23You know, two weeks ago, I would have said Shadir, Deshaun, Dylan Gabriel, and then, well,
12:29Taylor Green wasn't here, but Taylor Green.
12:32I would probably go Deshaun Watson above Shadir Sanders right now, but I don't think anything
12:39is set in stone.
12:40I think it's just too early.
12:41And I get it.
12:42I get why Watson would be the guy that some people in that building would want to play,
12:48you know, given his track record.
12:51The fact that he's coming back, you would think motivated after missing so much time
12:56and trying to prove that he can play again after the shoulder surgery and after the, you
13:01know, two Achilles tears.
13:03But we've talked about it.
13:05What's the future with him?
13:06Is there a future with Shadir?
13:07I think if inside the building, you believe there's a chance that Shadir Sanders can turn
13:11into your franchise guy or a top 15 quarterback in this league, I just think it makes all the
13:17sense in the world to go with him.
13:18Now, I also get it.
13:19If it's all about winning this year in the most games, you know, that matters too.
13:24So I think it's a fascinating discussion.
13:26I think it's still close.
13:28But if you had to, if you ask me, I would put, I think Deshaun Watson is probably ahead
13:32right now.
13:33By hair?
13:34Just by nose?
13:35Yeah.
13:35Yeah.
13:35I don't, I think it's just maybe it's semantics.
13:38I think they probably both get a bunch of reps with the starters for the next, for the foreseeable
13:43future, at least until you get the mandatory mini camp.
13:46And maybe by then Munkin says, okay, look, you know, I'm going to give the bulk of it to
13:50somebody.
13:51But even that, I think you probably wait until training camp before you really do that.
13:55Before you go full speed ahead with, okay, we're going to give this quarterback the bulk
14:00of the reps.
14:00And the reason I have caution just doing that with Deshaun Watson is because of the injury
14:07history.
14:08And if you go ahead and just give him all these reps and he gets hurt before the season starts
14:13or gets hurt week two, and you're going to be regretting not having given Shadr Sanders
14:18a bunch of reps leading up to him.
14:19So I think this is the time and this is the right situation to keep trying to get both guys
14:23ready.
14:24Outstanding.
14:25Scott, thank you so much.
14:26We do appreciate you.
14:27And of course, we're reading you every day.
14:29Brownzone.com and of course, Chronicle Telegram.
14:32Thanks, Scott.
14:32Thanks, fellas.
14:33I will talk to you soon.
14:34Scott Petrick, make sure you're reading him every day.
14:36Always has great stuff and knows the team inside and out.
