00:00Oh, it's nice to talk to you again, Daryl, and I would imagine, you know, it's not a time of
00:05the year you were anticipating maybe being busy or getting attention from people like radio shows in Buffalo, but yesterday
00:12was, I don't know, in one way it was shocking, but when you go all the way back to the
00:17contract getting reworked and everyone wondering why did they do this unless they're trading him, maybe it's not so shocking,
00:24but still, what were the last 24 hours or so like for you?
00:28Yeah, well, I mean, I started getting wind on Sunday that something could be going on with Miles being moved
00:34by the Browns, and then Monday morning had a couple of folks tell me it's looking like it's going to
00:43happen and be the Rams, I happened to be on our morning show, and they had obviously spent the morning
00:48talking about the trade speculation ramping up because it was June 1st, and opening the window for the Browns to
00:55be able to trade Miles Garrett,
00:57and they asked me the odds he'd remain with the Browns, and I said, well, I think 60-40, 60
01:02he gets traded, 40 he's gone, or I should say he stays, and I was off by 40% because
01:11he's gone, and I think this, honestly, I think this trade was agreed to long before this actually broke.
01:20I do know the Browns wanted to keep the news quiet until yesterday evening because they were holding their annual
01:28charity golf tournament, and the news broke in the middle of it to the point of Andrew Barry was nice
01:34enough at least to come over and say, hey, yes,
01:37we are in negotiations with the Rams on a transaction involving Miles Garrett, that's really all I'm going to say
01:43about it, if and when the trade becomes official, you know, we'll, you know, address it accordingly, and, you know,
01:52shortly thereafter became official, so I wasn't shocked.
01:57I really wasn't. I was ready for it, and, you know, the Browns end up trading arguably the best defensive
02:07player in franchise history.
02:08Some would say he's the best player in the National Football League right now at the age of 30, but,
02:14you know, this is what happens when you're a franchise constantly spinning your wheels in mud,
02:21trying to get things going in the right direction. Garrett was becoming impatient with the losing here in Cleveland.
02:28He has accomplished everything individually he sought out to, two-time defensive player of the year.
02:34He's the franchise all-time sack leader, set the single-season NFL sack record as well.
02:40Like, other than climbing up the sack charts, not much more individually for him to accomplish.
02:44He wants to compete for and play in Super Bowls, and that just was never going to happen in Cleveland.
02:50I don't think.
02:51Those golf tournaments are always on Mondays.
02:54Yes, they are.
02:55They'd like to have them on Fridays, because then that's the news dump day, and you can sort of maybe
02:59sneak around,
03:00but you can't get the golf courses on Fridays.
03:02It's a Monday. Every scramble is a Monday.
03:05So that's an interesting dilemma for the Browns or for sports teams.
03:11Daryl, I like this trade for the Browns.
03:14We have the Buffalo Sabres, who were in a playoff drought for 14 years until this past year.
03:20And a lot of, even when the Bills were in the drought they were in, a lot of the calculus
03:26for me is like,
03:27well, in a vacuum, I like this, but if I'm the GM, if I'm the organization,
03:33there's been so much losing that I think somebody eventually wants to say enough already
03:38with the trading for draft picks and such.
03:42The Browns do get Jared Verse here, and I think that's probably a tipping point in this trade,
03:46in my opinion, like it makes it that much more exciting or palatable or whatever.
03:52I don't know.
03:53I feel like I want to defend the Browns here, but does there come a point, are we way past
03:58it,
03:59even where you just can't?
04:02Well, I too have been defending the Browns a little bit.
04:06There's a lot to unpack with this whole situation.
04:10I mentioned about Miles being frustrated with the losing.
04:13We know what he did last year at the Super Bowl where he just took a blowtorch to the franchise
04:19in a very public fashion multiple times.
04:23The Browns then rewarded him with a big pay raise and contract extension.
04:29And I got to tell you, when I was driving back from Akron, Ohio, back up to Cleveland yesterday,
04:37I was thinking about that day when usually contract extension days are a very joyous occasion, right?
04:45And I was looking back on that day, and you know what?
04:48It really wasn't a joyous occasion.
04:50I mean, Miles played the part.
04:52He seemed to pretend to smile and be happy, but I could tell he wasn't happy.
04:58That was not the result he was hoping for, but at least he had gotten paid his market value.
05:05And so I felt like this thing was just rolling in this direction for the last 12-plus months.
05:12Andrew Barry was insisting that he was not going to trade him last year.
05:16That's what he said this morning.
05:18And Jared Verse is why he made the trade.
05:21That was the player he wanted.
05:23And the Rams kept saying, no, you can't have him.
05:27And, you know, my question is, okay, if Jared Verse is that great, then why did you have to trade
05:31him for Miles Garrett?
05:33Because he's younger, he's cheaper, you know, under control as well.
05:38You know, so that's a question that in my head I asked.
05:41But at the same time, you look at Jared Verse, he's a very good player.
05:46You know, third in pressure since coming into the league behind Michael Parsons and Miles Garrett.
05:51So that's good.
05:52No, he doesn't have the sack numbers that Miles Garrett has.
05:56But he does play well in the run game as well.
05:59And look, you're never replacing Miles Garrett.
06:02They're not getting another Miles Garrett.
06:03And I've been trying to explain to Browns fans a couple things.
06:07One, if you traded for Jared Verse straight up, the Rams want two first-round picks.
06:14And do you really trust the Browns to find a player of versus caliber in the draft with one of
06:20those first-round picks?
06:21The answer you're looking for, ladies and gentlemen, is absolutely not, okay?
06:25Because their history is what their history is.
06:28Although Andrew Berry has had two very good draft classes here.
06:31So, all that being said, it was very clear listening to Andrew Berry talk today.
06:37Verse was the key to the trade.
06:40It is what pushed this over the top for him.
06:44They do get additional draft capital, a first, a second, and a third.
06:48Starting next year, a first, 2028, the second, 2029, the third.
06:53It gives him some more ammunition so he can go ahead and trade up next year for a franchise quarterback
06:59in the upcoming draft.
07:02And that's what the Browns ultimately need to do because I think it's pretty clear they don't have, still, after
07:08all these years, an answer at that position in-house.
07:11Forgive me if I missed this through the early part of the afternoon, Daryl.
07:16Well, has verse shown up there yet, and if not, when is he expected to and, you know, any anticipation
07:24on what he might have to say?
07:27He is expected to land in Cleveland at any moment here this evening, and he will be introduced tomorrow.
07:37The Browns are holding their media availability for their OTAs for the week.
07:43And so, while we're out there for OTAs, they plan on making him available.
07:48As far as what he's going to say, I don't know.
07:50Certainly, I'm sure we're going to hear how happy he is he's going to be, you know, to be in
07:54Cleveland.
07:54You know, the standard pair that you hear from players.
07:57But let's be honest about it.
07:59You just went from a Super Bowl contender to a team who appears to be the furthest thing from a
08:03Super Bowl contender
08:04and has been for the better part of its existence.
08:07So, you know, maybe he can at least soften the blow of losing somewhat of the talent of Myles Garrett.
08:16I certainly believe that he could do that.
08:21I don't feel like that they've completely blown up their defense.
08:25The one thing they do lose in trading, Myles, is you don't have offensive coordinators quaking in their boots
08:31trying to figure out how they can send two and three tight ends across the formation to move Myles Garrett
08:37around
08:38and to try and chip him and block him and double and triple team him.
08:42I'm sure Vers is not going to command that type of attention.
08:46But he'll still be able to provide the Browns with some semblance of a pass rush.
08:52Daryl Reiter, 92-3, the fan in Cleveland.
08:55I don't know.
08:55This is not my place to say this, but, man, I love Cleveland.
09:00Like, I love to watch old games.
09:02When I was a kid, the Browns were competitive, if not really good, like mid to late 80s.
09:08And it just, you know, the Bills were down for so long.
09:11And we all just talked about them.
09:13And you with us, Daryl, at different times, you know, when the Browns would play the Bills.
09:18It's just like, this is just, how do we get this off the ground?
09:22And then Josh Allen, Sean McDermott, and Josh Allen happened.
09:26And then suddenly it's somewhat of a destination.
09:29And just something is going to do that for Cleveland eventually.
09:33I know it's been, it seems like forever.
09:35But I hope this verse and whoever is next can kind of, like, get into it.
09:40Because that town, I don't live there, you know.
09:43No, I'm not, again, I'm not in, this is not really my place to say it.
09:47But it's just, like, right there.
09:49We had the Sabres.
09:50I mentioned the Sabres already.
09:51And the Sabres were like, ugh.
09:53I mean, it's just, like, so depressing.
09:56And then suddenly it, you know, hits.
10:00And now it's the greatest thing ever.
10:02Like, it's just.
10:02But we have been Lake Erie loser brothers for a long time.
10:05Cleveland is two cities.
10:06Yeah, I mean, it's, Browns fans have been through hell and back with this team.
10:09They even lost the team on top of it, right?
10:11And it's just, it's, I've got to be honest with you, it's never been the same.
10:16And this iteration of the Browns is an insult to the original franchise.
10:22It really is.
10:24And, look, it's not for a lack of trying.
10:27They've tried everything to find a quarterback.
10:30They've used the first overall pick on quarterbacks.
10:33They've traded up in the first round for quarterbacks.
10:36They've used, you know, they've gone the mid-round thing.
10:40They've signed the retread guy.
10:42They've signed the guys at the end of their career.
10:45Like, they've done it all at that position to try and find a solution.
10:49You know, and they put fans through 4-44, which is the worst three-year stretch in NFL history, you
10:59know, a decade ago.
11:01And it felt like at the beginning of this decade, 2020, when Kevin Spassie came in, they went 11-5.
11:08They made the playoffs.
11:09They were a player or two away from the AFC championship game.
11:12Baker Mayfield was the quarterback.
11:14Odell Beckham Jr. was here.
11:16Jarvis Landry was here.
11:18And you just felt, Nick Chubb, you just, and Miles Garrett, you just felt like it was ready to burst
11:23through, right?
11:24And then it just all fell apart.
11:26And so we're back to square one again.
11:28So, and they've been going through this process.
11:32They don't want to call it a rebuild.
11:34I call it a rebuild.
11:35The youth movement, Andrew Berry, they have a nice young core, okay, on both sides of the ball.
11:40They really do.
11:42But it doesn't matter until you find a quarterback.
11:46And they just, they couldn't find a quarterback if one fell in their lap.
11:50And, again, they made the worst trade in NFL history because they were desperate to find a quarterback, right, with
11:56all the baggage, the things they were willing to compromise morally to find and fill that position, right?
12:03And the contract they gave out on top of it.
12:05Like, they have tried everything.
12:08And guess what's going to happen?
12:10Next April, they're going to try it again.
12:12And hopefully this time, they get it right.
12:16Is Deshaun Watson, I mean, it's early here.
12:19I know we're just into OTAs.
12:20We're not even into mandatory minicamps, let alone training camp and preseason games.
12:24But Watson's first on the depth chart.
12:26It seems like the opportunity for him to finally play for Cleveland, I mean, he's played some.
12:34But, like, get the job back is there for him.
12:36Is that how it's tracking here?
12:38Yeah, I mean, I think he's the leader in the clubhouse right now.
12:41But Shador Sanders is still in it.
12:43This is a true quarterback competition.
12:46Both players are getting first-team reps.
12:48At least to my eyes, it appears to be very close to equal reps and situational reps as well, okay?
12:58And so I think that unlike last year, which was the most dishonest quarterback competition I've ever watched,
13:07this one feels honest under Todd Munkin.
13:09And, you know, Deshaun looks healthy now.
13:15The arm looks good.
13:16But you know what?
13:18Talk to me when there's a defense that's allowed to hit him on the field, okay?
13:23Because him looking good at practice hasn't been a problem, although his last training camp back in 2024, he was
13:31a disaster.
13:32But, like, you know, the practice thing is the easy part.
13:35Can you get it done in a game?
13:36And here's what I know about Deshaun Watson.
13:38Every time he's come back after a long layoff, he has been terrible.
13:43And that's my expectation this fall.
13:45Yeah, he'll probably win the job.
13:48And then he'll look terrible.
13:50Shador Sanders, if you don't win the job, you're not a failure.
13:53It's not a failure.
13:54You're not being sabotaged.
13:56None of that.
13:56Guess what?
13:57You're going to see the field anyway at some point this year, okay?
14:00Because that's how it goes here in Cleveland.
14:03Deshaun Watson might start week one.
14:05He's not starting week 18.
14:07I guarantee you that, okay?
14:10That isn't going to happen.
14:11So, for one reason or another.
14:13So, Shador Sanders is going to get his chance to show what he can do this year.
14:19And, you know, to be honest with you, hopefully he can give the front office something to think about, right?
14:24Because if Shador Sanders can show that he can do this thing, then imagine what the Browns could be able
14:29to do with their draft capital from there to build around him instead of having to compile their draft capital
14:34to position themselves to get into the top two or three of the draft to pick the guy.
14:41How much interest, if any, do you think there will be in this supplemental draft idea if Sorsby does end
14:50up declaring for that?
14:51I mean, we're a few weeks out from that.
14:54And I know the hierarchy.
14:56I know Munkin talked about it and sort of sounded – I think the wording was it's a slippery slope
15:02or something.
15:03Barry more recently –
15:04See, I'll tell you what Munkin said yesterday.
15:06Oh, good, good.
15:07Not a chance in hell.
15:08But that's what he said yesterday.
15:09Okay, right.
15:10Not a direct quote, but that was the theme.
15:11Yeah, yeah.
15:12Is he a reputable source on this?
15:14Yeah.
15:15I would say the head coach would be a reputable source, yes.
15:18I mean, I'm paraphrasing that.
15:20Yeah, but if you look at the video I posted yesterday, you look at his face and then listen to
15:25what he has to say, he even said, hey, you know, that's just a bridge too far.
15:30So, I think the Browns' interest in him is absolutely none.
15:35Andrew Barry was asked today about it, and he gave the typical, well, we always explore options to improve our
15:41roster, and we're evaluating the situation.
15:44But if the head coach at the Cleveland Browns don't want him here, he ain't going to be here.
15:48So, the Browns will not have interest in him.
15:50I'm pretty confident in that.
15:51I do think, though, there will be a team around the NFL that will.
15:54The problem for Swarsby is the gambling, okay?
15:58And, you know, that's a no-no in any sport.
16:03We know that here in Cleveland.
16:05The Cleveland Guardians lost their closer in a starting pitcher because of gambling-related things.
16:11They're on indefinite suspension with Major League Baseball.
16:14That happened last year.
16:15So, yeah, gambling's a bridge too far in sports.
16:19They'll tolerate other unsavory off-the-field behavior that involves the abuse of people.
16:24But, hey, you start betting on stuff, well, you're persona non grata.
16:29Yeah, and, yes, I'm laying the sarcasm on really, really thick because, like, you know.
16:36It's appropriate.
16:37Yeah, and in fairness, gambling, you know, when you're talking gambling, you are talking about potential compromising the integrity of
16:44the game.
16:45And so, I get it.
16:47I do understand it.
16:48But, also, at the same time, I kind of wish the NFL had the same, shall we say, passion and
16:54disdain for other behavior as they do, you know, the gambling aspect of it.
17:01What are you saying?
17:02All these ads are, like, a sign that maybe the league is complicit?
17:06Is that what you're saying?
17:07Yeah.
17:07I mean, I don't know.
17:08You're saying the league is not completely making a stance that it's absolutely reprehensible behavior?
17:15Is there maybe a double message happening here?
17:18Yeah, and, like I said, you know, I wish their standards when it comes to the behavior of players off
17:26the field is equally as strong.
17:29Because, as we know, they've been very inconsistent in that regard, depending on where you fit on the scale of
17:36being really, really good or, you know, being a fringe player.
17:40What do they say?
17:42Performance breeds the tolerance, right?
17:44You perform, they're more tolerant.
17:46You don't perform well, they're less tolerant.
17:49I don't know how many years ago this was now.
17:51It probably was a DFS thing, Bulldog, not like a betting on a game.
17:55But I can remember sitting in the Bills press box before a game, probably next to you, and trying to
18:02get a lineup in, like a one o'clock slate, FanDuel lineup or something.
18:07And it wouldn't let, like the Wi-Fi would not let me do it.
18:10Blocked from the stadium.
18:11And I just happened to look up across the field, the players were on the field warming up, and the
18:16biggest sign in the world, FanDuel.
18:19I'm like, you know, I think I came in here the next day and made this point, and then the
18:24Bills came back to me like, we'll fix that.
18:27Yeah, we'll fix that.
18:31You should be able to do lineups going forward.
18:33But that happened.
18:35Hey, I'm old enough to remember when the NFL wouldn't even talk about fantasy football, right?
18:39Oh, well, I would love to talk more about fantasy, but Bulldog won't let me.
18:43I think this has probably been covered, Daryl, but in the last minute or two, if you don't mind.
18:49Like, we said this already, you and I, like, I kind of want to respect the Browns for this trade.
18:55What is the, where is the meter landing on Andrew Barry at this point?
19:01Is it just completely so far gone that the fans won't listen to him?
19:05I guess he spoke maybe today about this trade.
19:08Or, I mean, he gets another chance here to, you know, fix it as the GM.
19:15And that's not a chance every GM on a team that's been losing gets.
19:20And especially with this ownership group, which has the reputation of being very impatient.
19:25And I give them credit.
19:29And also, too, the ownership is very active within the organization.
19:33But, yeah, this is Barry's seventh year here.
19:36He's getting an opportunity to kind of put this thing back together.
19:39Some moves that he has made just, frankly, haven't worked out.
19:42And, obviously, that started with Deshaun Watson, right?
19:45But he has had two really good drafts.
19:49These last two years, he has, I mean, last year's rookie class was really impressive.
19:56Carson Swessinger, Quinshon Judkins, before he got injured, was fantastic.
20:03Just all around an outstanding class.
20:05And then this year, with, you know, Spencer Finneau, you know, the fact that they got Casey Concepcion and Boston
20:13in here.
20:14Like, there is a real good, sound, solid young nucleus here.
20:19Fans, yeah, not all that interested, I think.
20:22Right now, they're frustrated.
20:23They're angry today that Miles Garrett was traded.
20:27They'll get over it.
20:28They always do.
20:29But, yeah, Andrew Barry has a little bit of a new lease on life and a little bit of a
20:36leash from the ownership group to get this thing on track.
20:41They understand where they are in the pivot that they've made in the team-building process.
20:45And they believe that Andrew Barry is the guy to get this thing on the tracks and rolling in the
20:51right direction.
20:51And they're giving him every opportunity to do that.
20:54Interesting.
20:55Thank you, Daryl.
20:56Hope we can talk again when we get closer to the season.
20:58I know the Bills and the Browns are not on each other's schedule, but it's always a pleasure to have
21:03you on.
21:04Thanks, guys.
21:05Appreciate you having me.
21:06You're welcome.
21:07Daryl Reiter, 92-3, the fan in Cleveland.
