00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews
00:34who were persecuting you and conspiring against your life.
00:39Root out, I beg you, from my heart, all evil love of any creature.
00:44Grant that I may never prefer anything to you.
00:48May I always show the most perfect charity towards all men,
00:54especially those who trouble me.
00:57Pardon me, my holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you,
01:03and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned myself from you.
01:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:13who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem,
01:16according to the commandments of the law,
01:19giving them an example of humility and holy love
01:22by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet,
01:25wiping them with a linen cloth.
01:29I pray that this, your example, may penetrate my soul,
01:33destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me.
01:38Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility,
01:40that I may, without delay,
01:42perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience,
01:48that I may, with complete diligence,
01:50observe as your commandments,
01:52whatever your appointed representatives may decide.
01:57Give me the most fervent charity,
02:00that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:05Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:08who out of your unspeakable love
02:10gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist,
02:13and in it given yourself to us
02:16with wondrous liberality,
02:18so that you might remain with us
02:20even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:25Grant me, I beg you, O Lord,
02:27an earnest longing,
02:29and in kindle in my innermost soul
02:31and intense hunger for this adorable sacrament.
02:36Grant that when I go to the table of life
02:38I may receive you with chaste affection,
02:41complete humility,
02:43and perfect purity of heart.
02:45May my soul so thirst for you now
02:48and so languish in your love
02:50that I may one day be found suitable
02:53to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom,
02:56to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:03who, when you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted with words
03:08of unspeakable sweetness your disciples,
03:12and most earnestly commended them
03:15in prayer to your Father,
03:17most plainly showing
03:19how tenderly you loved them and us
03:22who were to believe through their word.
03:25Grant that my heart
03:27may evermore relish your word,
03:29and that I may find
03:31your words sweeter than honey to my taste.
03:36O that the spirit of that burning exhortation
03:38may so glide into my heart,
03:40that I may be wholly transformed
03:43into your love.
03:44So direct all my ways, O Lord my God,
03:48that your holy will
03:49may be done in and by me
03:51for ever and ever.
03:55Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:58who went out with your disciples
04:00across the Kedron brook
04:01and came into the garden,
04:03which you knew
04:04would be where you would be taken.
04:08May I entirely give up my will
04:10and always follow and love yours.
04:13May I, for your honour
04:15and for the salvation
04:16of my brothers and sisters,
04:18boldly endure any adversity
04:20and be willing even to lay down my life,
04:23if your divine providence
04:25should so ordain it.
04:28Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:31who, as your passion drew nigh,
04:33began to be fought sorrowful and sad
04:36with a heavy heart,
04:38and so that by transferring
04:40the weakness of all your members
04:41to yourself,
04:42you might be able to console
04:44and strengthen them
04:45when they were in their time of fear
04:48at the approach of death.
04:49By this, your own weakness,
04:52which you have willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me, I beg you,
04:58both from the immoderate sorrow
05:00and from foolish gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief
05:04which I have thus far endured
05:06may be for your glory
05:08and for the remission of my sins.
05:11Remove mercifully from me
05:13all distrust
05:14and unnecessary weakness,
05:16and confirm and establish my soul
05:19whole in you.
05:22Praise and honour and glory
05:23be to you, O Christ,
05:25who fell prostrate on the ground
05:27and prayed to your Holy Father,
05:29humbly offering your whole self to him,
05:32saying,
05:33Your will be done.
05:35Give me grace in every necessity
05:38and trouble
05:38to fly to you in prayer
05:40and freely to resign
05:42and give myself up
05:45to your will.
05:47May I never unduly endeavour
05:50to escape from trouble,
05:52but receive all things
05:53from your hand
05:54with a quiet mind,
05:56and may I endure everything
05:58in meekness of spirit
06:00for your love.
06:02Amen.
06:05O Lord, open our lips
06:07and our mouths
06:09shall sing your praise.
06:17O be joyful in the Lord,
06:21O be joyful in the Lord,
06:22O be joyful in the Lord,
06:24turn the Lord with gladness,
06:27and come with light,
06:30let us will not talk.
06:34Be sure that the Lord
06:37is God,
06:39it is he that shall pray
06:43us and not be ourselves.
06:45We are his people
06:48and the sheep of his pasture.
06:53O pray, O pray,
06:55into his case with mercy
06:59and into his God's great place,
07:04be thankful to him
07:07and be full of his name.
07:12For the Lord is gracious,
07:17his mercy is everlasting,
07:23and his truth and joy
07:25from generation to generation.
07:35glory be to the Father
07:39and to the Son
07:42and to the Holy Ghost
07:46as it was in the beginning
07:50is now and ever shall be
07:56world without end.
08:03Amen.
08:16Rejoice in the Lord,
08:19O ye righteous,
08:22for it be calm and well,
08:25the just to be thankful.
08:27praise the Lord with love,
08:32sing praises unto him
08:35with the news,
08:37and instruments of heaven's dreams.
08:42Sing unto the Lord
08:44a new song,
08:48sing praises lastly unto him
08:52with the Lord with a good courage,
08:56for the word of the Lord is true,
09:01and all his works are faithful.
09:06He loved righteousness and judgment,
09:12the earth is born of the goodness of the Lord.
09:18by the Lord of the Lord,
09:21for the heavens may,
09:25and all the first of them
09:28by the bread of his blood.
09:32He ever and the waters of the sea together,
09:38as it were by thee,
09:42and there of the deep
09:46as in the treasures.
09:50Let o'er the earth fear for the Lord,
09:56standing o'er the fear for the Lord,
10:00that dwell in the world.
10:03For he spake and it was done,
10:08he come away while it stood fast.
10:15For the Lord bringeth the counsel
10:19of the kingdom to Lord,
10:23and maketh the devices of the people
10:26to be on man in debt,
10:29and casteth out the counsels of princes.
10:34The counsel of the Lord shall endure forever,
10:42and the thoughts of his love
10:45from generation to generation.
10:52Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord's people,
10:58and blessed are the people
11:02and blessed are the people
11:04that we have chosen to give
11:07to be his imperatives.
11:11For the Lord comes down on earth,
11:15and we hail all the children of men
11:20from the habitation of his dwelling.
11:24He considereth all them as dwell on the earth.
11:32He fashioneth all the hearts of them,
11:38and on the staff there for them.
11:44There is no king that can be saved
11:49by the altitude of hope and hope.
11:54Neither is any mighty man
11:57delivered by God's strength.
12:02The horse is shouted out of vain,
12:06to save the land.
12:09Neither shall he deal with any man
12:13by his greatest dread.
12:19Behold, the eye of the Lord
12:22is upon them that fear him,
12:26and upon them that holds their trust in his mercy.
12:32To deliver the love of their son from death,
12:38and to feed them in the time of death.
12:45Our son hath patience be treaded for the Lord,
12:51for he is our help and our shield,
12:55for our hearts shall rejoice in him,
13:02because he have brought in his holy name.
13:09Let thy mercy to kindness
13:11the love be upon us,
13:16like as we to put our trust in thee.
13:26glory be to the Father,
13:30and to the Son,
13:33and to the Holy Ghost,
13:37as it was in the beginning,
13:40is now and ever shall be,
13:46worthy but ever come.
14:05A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke,
14:08chapter 3.
14:11Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar,
14:15Pontius Pilate being ruler of Judea,
14:18and Herod being king of Galilee,
14:19his brother Philip king of the country of Atreira and Trachonetes,
14:25and Lysenius king of Abilene,
14:28when Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests,
14:31the word of the Lord came to John the son of Zechariah in the wasteland.
14:36He came into all the country around about Jordan,
14:40preaching baptism as a sign of forgiveness of sin for those whose hearts were changed.
14:47As it says in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
14:50the voice of one crying in the wasteland,
14:53make ready the way of the Lord,
14:55make his road straight.
14:57Every valley will be lifted up and all the mountains and hills made low,
15:01the twisted will be made straight,
15:04and all the rough ways smooth,
15:06and all flesh will see the salvation of God.
15:13So he said to the people who went out to him for baptism,
15:16You, offspring of snakes,
15:19at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come?
15:23Make it clear by your acts that your hearts have been changed,
15:27and do not say to yourselves,
15:28We have Abraham for our father.
15:31For I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children of Abraham.
15:38Even now the axe is put to the root of the trees,
15:41and every tree which does not have good fruit will be cut then and put away into the fire.
15:48The people put questions to him, saying,
15:51What are we to do?
15:55He answered and said to them,
15:57He who has two coats, let him give to him who has not even one,
16:02and he who has food, let him do the same.
16:08Then tax farmers came to him for baptism and said to him,
16:11Master, what have we to do?
16:13He said to them,
16:15Do not make an attempt to get more money than the right amount.
16:20Men of the army put questions to him, saying,
16:23And what have we to do?
16:25And he said to them,
16:26Do no violent act to any man,
16:29nor do not take anything without right,
16:31and let your payment be enough for you.
16:35While the people were waiting, and all the men were questioning in their hearts about John,
16:40if he was the Christ or not, John made answer,
16:43saying to them all,
16:45Truly I give you baptism with water,
16:48but one is coming who is greater than I,
16:51whose shoes I am not good enough to undo.
16:54He will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire,
16:58and in whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain.
17:05He will put the good grain in his store,
17:08but the waste will be burned in the fire,
17:10which will never be put out.
17:13So comforting them with these and with other words,
17:17he gave the good news to the people.
17:21But Herod the king, because John had made a protest on account of Herodias, his brother's wife,
17:27and all the other evil things which Herod had done,
17:30did this most evil thing of all,
17:32and had John shut up in prison.
17:37Now it came about when all the people had been given baptism,
17:40Jesus, having had baptism with them, was in prayer.
17:44When the heaven being opened,
17:46the Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove,
17:49and a voice came from heaven saying,
17:51You are my dearly beloved son,
17:54with whom I am well pleased.
17:58Jesus at this time was about thirty years old,
18:02being the son, as it appeared, of Joseph,
18:05the son of Hades.
18:08This is the word of the Lord.
18:10Thanks be to God.
18:17This, the beginning of John's ministry,
18:20marks a new period in the Bible,
18:22that relating to the Messiah,
18:25for whom he was to prepare the way.
18:28From the time of his birth until this time,
18:30we have heard nothing of him,
18:32other than he was living in the wilderness.
18:37Some translations refer to a desert,
18:39but in reality we are most probably talking about
18:42the mountain scrubland of the Golan Heights,
18:46to the east of the Jordan.
18:50The list of people in government given by Luke
18:53enable us to precisely dig this,
18:56but what is of more interest
18:57is the picture painted by these people.
19:01Tiberius had a wicked reputation,
19:04and so did Pontius Pilate,
19:07who was eventually recalled to Rome
19:09for incompetence and disposed of accordingly.
19:14And then we have the three remaining children
19:16of Herod the Great,
19:17an unpleasant bunch of these,
19:20if ever there was.
19:21And also of interest is the fact
19:23that there were two high priests,
19:26something that should never have happened.
19:30We do not know why
19:32there was an annual rotation
19:34between Annas and Caiaphas.
19:37Perhaps it had not been possible
19:38to agree on who the new high priest
19:40should have been.
19:41And this was the most unfortunate
19:44and unhappy compromise.
19:48So by way of background to John,
19:50we have the coming of the Messiah
19:52against the background of the Holy Land.
19:54the Holy Land,
19:55governed by disreputable foreigners.
19:59In the past,
20:00when the land had been occupied,
20:02Jewish governors had been appointed.
20:04But at this time,
20:06under the Roman occupation,
20:07no such luxury had been afforded.
20:11To add insult to injury,
20:13the priesthood in Jerusalem
20:14was in disarray,
20:15and into this melting pot
20:17arrived John the Baptist.
20:22The process of becoming a Christian
20:24involves two stages.
20:26First of all,
20:27we need to be convinced
20:28of our sinful state.
20:30And then,
20:31having been thus convinced,
20:32we need to desire forgiveness.
20:36We cannot go straight to stage two,
20:38because unless we are convinced
20:39of the need for forgiveness,
20:42why would we bother?
20:43If we thought we were doing okay,
20:45we wouldn't ask for forgiveness.
20:50In this case,
20:51John has convinced the crowd their sin.
20:53To a man,
20:55they know that they,
20:56as in all of us,
20:58are sinful,
20:59and so they ask,
21:00what is it that we should do?
21:04The answer they received
21:05was simple enough.
21:07Once they were baptized,
21:09they should share what they have
21:10with those who are lacking.
21:12And we are given the example
21:13of clothes and food,
21:15two of the four essentials
21:16of daily living.
21:19There was a special demand
21:21from the tax collectors though,
21:23for they knew that they were
21:24particularly wicked,
21:25or were at least prone to being so.
21:28For the Roman system allowed them
21:29to keep a commission
21:30for the taxes they collected.
21:33So they would demand
21:34more taxes than were due
21:36in order to line their pockets.
21:40Also asking for help
21:41were the soldiers.
21:43And we assume that these
21:45were Herod's soldiers
21:46rather than Romans.
21:48But it is possible,
21:49of course,
21:50that there were Romans
21:51in the crowd.
21:52Soldiers were badly paid,
21:54which meant that they would
21:55always be looking for ways
21:57to supplement their income
21:59by extorting additional money
22:01from the people
22:01they were governing.
22:05But John was not finished.
22:07No sooner had he dealt
22:08with the questions,
22:09than he moved on
22:10to give them a dire warning
22:12of the time to come.
22:13The time when there would be
22:15a sorting of good
22:16from bad.
22:17The time when the unproductive
22:18would be uprooted
22:20and put to the fire
22:21of destruction
22:22to make way for the fruitful.
22:25In all, the message was simple
22:27but urgent,
22:29much the same as it is now,
22:31other than the fact
22:32that we are now
22:332,000 years closer
22:35to the point of sorting.
22:40John had attracted
22:41a great deal of attention
22:42upon himself
22:43through his ministry
22:44of baptism.
22:46In many ways,
22:47the time was right
22:48for a mass conversion.
22:50A mass conviction
22:51of the sins of Israel
22:53or many from all levels
22:55of society
22:55had been looking in hope
22:57for the coming
22:58of the Messiah.
23:00First prophesied
23:01many hundreds of years earlier.
23:03There was an anticipation
23:04of something to come
23:05to overthrow this hated
23:07Roman occupation
23:08and for a return
23:10to the good old days
23:12when Israel was free
23:13to sin in peace.
23:16Indeed, John was universally
23:18recognised as a great prophet.
23:20Surprisingly enough
23:22even by Herod himself
23:23for although he locked
23:25John up in prison,
23:27we read elsewhere
23:27that he had an interesting job
23:29and was reluctant
23:31to finish the deed
23:32by putting him to death.
23:36John, for his part,
23:37was anxious
23:38not to claim anything
23:39for himself.
23:42We read that he told
23:43the assembled crowds
23:44that one much greater
23:45than he was to come,
23:47pointing to the Messiah himself.
23:50What is more,
23:52he gave a warning
23:53for although the Messiah
23:55would baptise
23:55with the Holy Spirit,
23:57he would also come
23:58with fire
23:59to burn the rubbish
24:00to purify the storehouse.
24:03In other words,
24:04the wicked and repentant
24:05would be destroyed
24:06absolutely.
24:08This was it.
24:09At this time,
24:10they would not be taken away
24:11into captivity.
24:13They would be destroyed
24:14completely,
24:15removed from the face
24:17of the earth
24:17in its entirety.
24:22There then follows
24:22a slight non sequitur
24:24in that Luke tells us
24:26of the imprisonment
24:27of John
24:27before moving
24:28to the baptism
24:29of Jesus.
24:31For most obviously,
24:32the events happened
24:33in the reverse order.
24:36However,
24:36there is some logic
24:37to this,
24:38as Luke had been writing
24:40of John
24:40before turning back
24:41to Jesus.
24:45Interestingly,
24:45we gain an insight
24:46into the humility
24:47of Jesus.
24:49He could have come
24:50to the front of the queue
24:51for baptism,
24:51after all.
24:53He was to be
24:53the guest of honour.
24:55But no,
24:56we read that he waited
24:57until all in the crowd
24:59for that day
24:59had been baptised
25:00and then he came
25:02quietly forward.
25:05Unlike those in the crowd,
25:07Jesus had no sin
25:08and therefore no need
25:09of baptism.
25:10But he chose
25:11to be baptised
25:12to show his submission
25:13to his Father's will
25:14and to mark the start
25:16of his ministry.
25:18It is almost as though
25:19he was saying,
25:21Yes, Father,
25:22it is time.
25:25To which came
25:26the reply from heaven.
25:29Notice also,
25:30yet again,
25:31that Jesus was in prayer
25:33in the immediate aftermath
25:34of his baptism.
25:36In the moment,
25:40that Jesus was in prayer.
25:41Let us pray.
25:44O God,
25:45the strength of all
25:46who put their trust
25:47in you,
25:49mercifully accept our prayers
25:51and because through
