00:00:22Let us pray.
00:00:50Let us pray.
00:00:54And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son into the heavenly inheritance.
00:01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who in the midst of reproach and injury bore your cross
00:01:07with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders.
00:01:13Wearied and panting for breath, you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight.
00:01:19Give me grace to take hold of the cross of self-denial with ardent devotion and to imitate with the
00:01:25most fervent of charity the example of your virtues and to follow you in humility even unto death.
00:01:38Let us pray.
00:01:46Let us pray.
00:01:49Draw me after you that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely deny, forsake and
00:01:57go out of myself.
00:01:59Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy except in you, my Redeemer.
00:02:07Grant that I may love you alone and may return love for love. May I earnestly seek after you and
00:02:14live to you alone.
00:02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who when bowed down by the weight of your cross at
00:02:24length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled with gall.
00:02:34May you extinguish in me all. May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never
00:02:40to consent to any impure or unlawful pleasure.
00:02:45But may I take my food in moderation to the glory of your name and may hunger and thirst after
00:02:51you alone and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
00:02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on Mount
00:03:04Calvary and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
00:03:11You did not refuse to seek the most dreadful pain. Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty and
00:03:20never be disturbed by want or scarcity.
00:03:24Give me grace to bear patiently any difficulties or troubles in this life for the glory of your name.
00:03:31Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection and grant me a holy intent with pious desires, renewing within
00:03:41me daily a most pure love for yourself.
00:03:45Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon the wood
00:03:53of the cross and the joints of your most holy limbs to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed and fastened
00:04:00thereto.
00:04:02Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet to be most deeply wounded.
00:04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember with a faithful and grateful heart this your unspeakable charity, when you did
00:04:20of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bald and your feet to be pierced through.
00:04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you, pierce it and fix it to yourself with
00:04:34the nail of your sweetest love, and shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts, and all
00:04:42my affections. Amen.
00:04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:04:59O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:25O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:35O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:46O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:51O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:54O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:55O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
00:05:55For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
00:06:04and his good and joy from generation to generation.
00:06:17Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
00:06:24and to the believers, as it was in the beginning,
00:06:33is now and ever shall be, world without end.
00:06:45Amen.
00:07:04Amen.
00:07:08Amen.
00:07:10Amen.
00:09:28Amen.
00:09:32Amen.
00:09:47The Gospel according to Saint Mark, Chapter 1.
00:09:53Then they went to Capernaum.
00:09:56When the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
00:10:02The people there were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like the
00:10:10experts in the law.
00:10:13Just then there was a man at the synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, Leave us alone,
00:10:21Jesus the Nazarene.
00:10:22Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.
00:10:30But Jesus rebuked him, Silence, come out of him.
00:10:35After throwing him in convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
00:10:44They were all amazed, so that they asked one another, What is this? Are you teaching with authority? He even
00:10:53commands the unclean spirits, and they obeyed him.
00:10:57And so the news about him quickly spread throughout all the region around Galilee.
00:11:06Now as they left the synagogue, they entered Simon and Andrew's house with James and John.
00:11:13Simon's mother-in-law was lying down sick with a fever, and so they spoke to Jesus at once about
00:11:20her.
00:11:21He came and raised her up, gently taking her hand.
00:11:25The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
00:11:30When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and demon-possessed.
00:11:37The whole town gathered by the dawn.
00:11:40So he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and drove out many demons.
00:11:47But he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew who he was.
00:11:55Then Jesus got up early in the morning, whilst it was still dark, and departed, going to a deserted place.
00:12:03And there he spent time in prayer.
00:12:06Simon and his companions searched for him.
00:12:10When they found him, they said, Everyone is looking for you.
00:12:14He replied, Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I may preach there too.
00:12:23For that is what I came out here to do.
00:12:26So he went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues, and casting out demons.
00:12:35Now a leper came to him, and fell to his knees, asking for help.
00:12:41If you are willing, you may make me clean, he said.
00:12:45Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying,
00:12:51I am willing, be clean.
00:12:54The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean.
00:12:59Immediately, Jesus sent the man away with a very strong warning.
00:13:03He said to him, See that you do not say anything to anyone but go.
00:13:08Share yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.
00:13:17But as the man went out, he began to announce it publicly.
00:13:22And so the story spread widely, and Jesus was no longer able to enter any town openly, but stayed outside
00:13:31in remote places.
00:13:33But still, they kept coming to him from everywhere.
00:13:48The worship in the synagogue, not having been instituted by Moses, but gradually developed by the public need,
00:13:57was a comparatively free and unconventional affair.
00:14:03Sometimes it would happen that a remarkable and serious-looking stranger would be invited if they had a word of
00:14:10exhortation to say,
00:14:12as we see in Acts chapter 13, verse 15.
00:14:18Sometimes one presented himself, as the custom of our Lord was, Luke 4, 16.
00:14:26Amid the dull mechanical tendencies which were then turning the hearts of Judaism to stone,
00:14:33the synagogue may often be seen as a centre of life, a rallying place of freedom.
00:14:41In Galilee, where such worship predominated over that of the remote temple and its hierarchy,
00:14:49Jesus found his trusted followers and the nucleus of the church.
00:14:55In foreign lands, St. Paul bore first to his brethren in their synagogues the strange tidings that their Messiah had
00:15:03expired upon a cross.
00:15:07Before his rupture with the chiefs of Judaism, the synagogues were fitting places for our Lord's early teaching.
00:15:16He made use of the existing system as he found it and applied it,
00:15:20just as we have seen him use the teaching of the Baptist as a starting point for his end.
00:15:29So this ought to be observed, that Jesus revolutionised the world by methods the furthest from being revolutionary.
00:15:41The institutions of his age and land were corrupt well nigh to the core,
00:15:46but he did not therefore make a clean sweep and began again.
00:15:50He did not turn his back on the temple and the synagogue, nor outrage the Sabbath, nor come to destroy
00:15:57the law and the prophets.
00:15:59But he bade his followers reverence the seat where the scribes and the Pharisees sat.
00:16:08He drew the line of their false lives and perilous examples.
00:16:13Amid that evil generation, he found soil wherein his seed might germinate,
00:16:19and was content to hide his limb in the lump where it would gradually work out its destiny.
00:16:27In so doing, he was at one with providence,
00:16:31which had slowly evolved the convictions of the Old Testament,
00:16:35spending centuries in the process.
00:16:39Now the power which belongs to such moderation
00:16:42has scarcely been recognised until these latter days.
00:16:48But who taught the carpenter?
00:16:51It is therefore significant that all the Gospels of the Galilean ministry
00:16:55connect our Lord's early teaching with the synagogue.
00:17:02St Mark is by no means the evangelist of the discourses.
00:17:06This adds to the interest with which we find him indicates with precise exactitude
00:17:13the first great difference that would strike the hearers of Christ
00:17:17between his teaching and that of others.
00:17:21He taught with authority, not as scribes.
00:17:25Their doctrine was built with dreary and irrational ingenuity
00:17:30upon perverted views of the old law.
00:17:35The shape of a Hebrew letter,
00:17:37words whereof the initials would spell some important name.
00:17:41Wire-drawn inferences,
00:17:43astounding illusions, ingenuity such as men waste
00:17:46now upon the number of the beast
00:17:49and the measurement of the pyramid.
00:17:51These were the doctrine of the scribes of the time of Jesus.
00:17:59An acute observer might remark
00:18:02that the authority of Christ's teaching
00:18:04was peculiar in a further-reaching sense.
00:18:08If, as it seems clear, Jesus said,
00:18:12you have heard that it has been said,
00:18:14not by, but, but,
00:18:17to the old time,
00:18:19but I say to you.
00:18:22Then he claimed a place,
00:18:24not of Moses, who heard the divine voice,
00:18:26but of him who spoke.
00:18:29Even if this could be doubted,
00:18:31the same spirit is elsewhere unmistakable.
00:18:35The tables which Moses brought
00:18:37were inscribed by the finger of another.
00:18:41No one could make him the supreme arbitrator,
00:18:45while overhead the trumpet waxed louder and louder,
00:18:49while the fiery pillar marshaled their journey,
00:18:52while the mysterious presence
00:18:54consecrated the mysterious shrine.
00:18:58Prophet after prophet opened and closed their message
00:19:02with the words,
00:19:03Thus says the Lord,
00:19:05for the mouth of the Lord spoke it.
00:19:09Jesus, however, was content with,
00:19:13Verily I say to you,
00:19:15blessed as a wise builder was the hearer
00:19:18and doer of these words of mine.
00:19:22Everywhere in his teaching,
00:19:24the centre of authority is personal.
00:19:27He distinctly recognises the facts
00:19:30that he is adding to the range
00:19:31of the ancient law of respect
00:19:33for human life,
00:19:35for purity,
00:19:36veracity,
00:19:37and kindness.
00:19:39But he assigns no authority
00:19:42for these additions beyond his own.
00:19:46Persecution by all men
00:19:47is a blessed thing to endure,
00:19:50if it be for his sake
00:19:52and for the gospel.
00:19:54Now this is unique.
00:19:57Moses,
00:19:58or Isaiah,
00:19:59never dreamt
00:20:00that devotion to himself
00:20:02took rank with devotion
00:20:04to his message.
00:20:05And nor did St. Paul.
00:20:08But Christ opens his ministry
00:20:10with the same pretensions
00:20:12as at the close.
00:20:14When no other
00:20:15may be called rabbi
00:20:17nor master
00:20:18because these titles
00:20:20belong solely to him.
00:20:24The lapse of ages
00:20:26renders this authority of Christ
00:20:29more wonderful than at first.
00:20:32The world bows down
00:20:34before something other
00:20:35than his clearness of logic
00:20:38or subtlety of inference.
00:20:41He still announces
00:20:42where others argue.
00:20:44He reveals,
00:20:46imposes on us
00:20:47his supremacy,
00:20:48bids us take
00:20:49his yoke
00:20:50and learn.
00:20:53We still discover
00:20:54in his teaching
00:20:55a freshness
00:20:56and depth,
00:20:57a universal reach
00:20:58of application
00:20:59and yet
00:21:00an unearthliness
00:21:01of aspect
00:21:02which suit
00:21:04so unparalleled
00:21:05a claim.
00:21:07Others
00:21:08have constructed
00:21:09cisterns
00:21:10in which
00:21:10to store truth
00:21:11or aqueducts
00:21:12to convey it
00:21:13from higher levels.
00:21:16Christ himself
00:21:17is a fountain
00:21:18and not only so
00:21:19but the water
00:21:21which he gives
00:21:22when received correctly
00:21:24becomes in the faithful hearts
00:21:26a well of water
00:21:26springing up
00:21:27in new
00:21:28inexhaustible
00:21:29developments.
00:21:34We have recently
00:21:36read
00:21:37that Christ's
00:21:38teaching
00:21:39astonished
00:21:40the hearers.
00:21:42He was about
00:21:43to astonish
00:21:43them further
00:21:44for we have reached
00:21:46the first miracle
00:21:46which St Mark
00:21:47records.
00:21:49With what sentiments
00:21:50should such a narrative
00:21:52be approached?
00:21:54The evangelist
00:21:56connects it
00:21:57emphatically
00:21:58with Christ's
00:21:59assertion
00:22:00of authority.
00:22:03Immediately
00:22:04upon the impression
00:22:05which his manner
00:22:05of teaching
00:22:06produced
00:22:06straight away
00:22:08there was
00:22:08in the synagogue
00:22:09a man
00:22:10with an unclean
00:22:11spirit.
00:22:13Upon its
00:22:14expulsion
00:22:14what impressed
00:22:16the people
00:22:16was that
00:22:17he talked
00:22:17with authority
00:22:18so
00:22:19with authority
00:22:21he commands
00:22:21even the unclean
00:22:23spirits
00:22:23and they
00:22:24obey him.
00:22:26Let us try
00:22:27whether
00:22:28this may not
00:22:30be a providential
00:22:31clue
00:22:31to guide us
00:22:33amid the
00:22:34embarrassment
00:22:34which beset
00:22:35in our day
00:22:37the whole subject
00:22:38of miracles.
00:22:42A miracle
00:22:43we are told
00:22:44is an interference
00:22:46with the basic
00:22:47laws of nature.
00:22:48It is impossible
00:22:50because they
00:22:51are fixed
00:22:51and their
00:22:52operation
00:22:53is uniform.
00:22:55But these
00:22:56bold words
00:22:57do not
00:22:57need
00:22:58disconcert
00:22:59anyone
00:22:59who has
00:23:00learned to
00:23:00ask
00:23:01in what
00:23:02sense
00:23:02are the
00:23:03operations
00:23:03of nature
00:23:04uniform?
00:23:06Is the
00:23:07operation
00:23:07of the
00:23:08law
00:23:08which
00:23:08governed
00:23:09the wind
00:23:09uniform?
00:23:11Whether
00:23:11am I
00:23:12held
00:23:12Mr.
00:23:12Port
00:23:13or
00:23:13Starbord?
00:23:14Can I
00:23:15not modify
00:23:16the
00:23:16operation
00:23:17of sanitary
00:23:18laws
00:23:18by using
00:23:19a deodorant
00:23:20by drainage
00:23:22by a
00:23:22thousand
00:23:23resources
00:23:24of
00:23:24civilization?
00:23:27The truth
00:23:27is clearly
00:23:28that while
00:23:29natural laws
00:23:30remain fixed
00:23:30human
00:23:31intelligence
00:23:32profoundly
00:23:33modifies
00:23:34their
00:23:34operation.
00:23:36How then
00:23:37can an
00:23:38objector
00:23:39prove that
00:23:39a higher
00:23:40being
00:23:40can also
00:23:41as naturally
00:23:42do the
00:23:42same?
00:23:44He might
00:23:45answer us
00:23:46because the
00:23:47sum total
00:23:47of the
00:23:48forces of
00:23:48nature
00:23:48is a
00:23:49fixed
00:23:49quantity.
00:23:50Nothing
00:23:51can be
00:23:51added to
00:23:52that sum
00:23:52neither
00:23:53can anything
00:23:54be taken
00:23:54away from
00:23:55it.
00:23:57The
00:23:58energy of
00:23:59all our
00:23:59machines
00:23:59existed
00:24:01ages ago
00:24:02in the
00:24:02heat of
00:24:03the tropical
00:24:03sun,
00:24:04then in
00:24:05vegetation
00:24:06and ever
00:24:07since,
00:24:07though latent
00:24:08in our
00:24:09coal beds
00:24:10and oil
00:24:11and gas
00:24:11reserves.
00:24:13The claim
00:24:14to add
00:24:14anything to
00:24:15that total
00:24:16is subversive
00:24:17of modern
00:24:18science.
00:24:20But again
00:24:21we might
00:24:22ask,
00:24:23if a doctor
00:24:24adds nothing
00:24:25to the
00:24:25sum of
00:24:25forces
00:24:26when he
00:24:27rids us
00:24:27of one
00:24:28disease
00:24:28by vaccination
00:24:29and another
00:24:30by draining
00:24:31a marsh,
00:24:32why must
00:24:33Jesus have
00:24:34added to
00:24:35the sum of
00:24:36forces in
00:24:37order to
00:24:38expel a
00:24:39demon
00:24:39or cool
00:24:41a fever?
00:24:43It will
00:24:43not suffice
00:24:44to answer
00:24:45because his
00:24:46methods are
00:24:46contrary to
00:24:47experience.
00:24:49Surely
00:24:50they are
00:24:50beyond our
00:24:51experience.
00:24:54But so
00:24:55were the
00:24:55marvels of
00:24:56computers to
00:24:57our parents
00:24:58and of
00:24:59electricity to
00:25:00their parents.
00:25:01The chemistry
00:25:03which analyses
00:25:04the stars
00:25:04is not
00:25:05incredible,
00:25:06although a
00:25:07century ago
00:25:08its methods
00:25:09were contrary
00:25:10to the
00:25:11universal
00:25:11experience of
00:25:12humanity.
00:25:14Man can
00:25:15now do
00:25:15what he
00:25:16never did
00:25:16before,
00:25:17because he
00:25:17is a more
00:25:18skilful and
00:25:19better informed
00:25:19agent than
00:25:20he ever was
00:25:21even 50
00:25:23years ago.
00:25:25Perhaps at
00:25:26this moment,
00:25:26in a laboratory
00:25:27of some
00:25:28unknown
00:25:28student,
00:25:29some new
00:25:30force is
00:25:30preparing to
00:25:32amaze the
00:25:32world.
00:25:34But the
00:25:35sum of the
00:25:35forces of
00:25:36nature will
00:25:37remain unchanged.
00:25:39So why
00:25:40is it assumed
00:25:41that a
00:25:42miracle must
00:25:42change them?
00:25:44Simply
00:25:45because men
00:25:46have already
00:25:47denied God,
00:25:48or at least
00:25:48denied that
00:25:49he is present
00:25:50within his
00:25:52world,
00:25:52just as the
00:25:54chemist is
00:25:54within it.
00:25:56If we think
00:25:57of him as
00:25:57interrupting its
00:25:58processes from
00:26:00without,
00:26:01laying upon the
00:26:02vast machine so
00:26:03powerful the
00:26:04grasp as to
00:26:05arrest its
00:26:06working,
00:26:07then indeed
00:26:08the sum of
00:26:08forces is
00:26:09disturbed,
00:26:10and the
00:26:11complaints of
00:26:11science are
00:26:12justified.
00:26:15This may,
00:26:16or it may not,
00:26:17have been the
00:26:17case in our
00:26:18creative epoch,
00:26:20in which science
00:26:21knows no more
00:26:22than of the
00:26:23beginning of
00:26:24life and of
00:26:24consciousness.
00:26:25consciousness.
00:26:26But it has
00:26:27nothing to say
00:26:28against the
00:26:29doctrine of the
00:26:30miracles of
00:26:30Christ.
00:26:32For this
00:26:33doctrine assumes
00:26:34that God is
00:26:34ever-present in
00:26:35the universe,
00:26:36that by him
00:26:38all things
00:26:39consist,
00:26:40that he is not
00:26:41far from any
00:26:42one of us,
00:26:43for in him we
00:26:44live, move,
00:26:45and have our
00:26:46being,
00:26:47though we may
00:26:48be as
00:26:49unconscious of
00:26:50him, as of
00:26:51gravity and of
00:26:52electrical impulses.
00:26:55When these
00:26:56became known to
00:26:57man, the
00:26:58stability of
00:26:59law was
00:26:59unaffected.
00:27:02It is a
00:27:03wild assumption
00:27:04that if a
00:27:05supreme and
00:27:06vital force
00:27:07exists, a
00:27:08living God,
00:27:10he cannot make
00:27:10his energies
00:27:11visible without
00:27:12affecting the
00:27:13stability of
00:27:14law.
00:27:18Christ himself
00:27:19appeals expressly
00:27:21and repeatedly
00:27:22to this
00:27:23imminent presence
00:27:24of God as
00:27:26the explanation
00:27:26of all his
00:27:28works.
00:27:29My father
00:27:30works, and
00:27:31therefore I
00:27:32work.
00:27:33The father
00:27:34loves the
00:27:34son and
00:27:35shows him
00:27:36all the
00:27:36things that
00:27:37he does
00:27:37himself.
00:27:38I, by
00:27:40the finger
00:27:40of God,
00:27:42cast out
00:27:42devils.
00:27:46Thus, a
00:27:47miracle, even
00:27:48in the Old
00:27:49Testament, is
00:27:49not an
00:27:50interruption of
00:27:51law by
00:27:51God, but
00:27:52a manifestation
00:27:53of God, who
00:27:55is within
00:27:55nature always.
00:27:58To common
00:27:59events, it is
00:28:00comparable to
00:28:02the lightning
00:28:02and the
00:28:03cloud, a
00:28:04revelation of
00:28:05the electricity
00:28:06which was
00:28:06already there.
00:28:09God was
00:28:10made known
00:28:10when invoked
00:28:11by his
00:28:12agents inside
00:28:13signs from
00:28:14heaven, in
00:28:15fire, in
00:28:15tempest, drought
00:28:17and pestilence, a
00:28:18God who judges.
00:28:20These are the
00:28:21miracles of God
00:28:22interposing for
00:28:23his people against
00:28:24their foes.
00:28:26But the
00:28:27miracles of
00:28:28Christ are those
00:28:28of God carrying
00:28:29forward to the
00:28:30uttermost his
00:28:31presence in the
00:28:32world, God
00:28:34in the flesh.
00:28:36They are the
00:28:36works of him
00:28:37in whom dwells
00:28:38the fullness of
00:28:39the Godhead
00:28:40bodily.
00:28:43this explains
00:28:44what might
00:28:45otherwise be so
00:28:46perplexing, the
00:28:47essentially different
00:28:48nature of his
00:28:49miracles from
00:28:50those recorded
00:28:51in the Old
00:28:52Testament.
00:28:56Infidelity
00:28:56pretends that
00:28:58those are the
00:28:58models on which
00:28:59the myth or
00:29:00legend formed
00:29:01the miracles of
00:29:02Jesus.
00:29:03But the plain
00:29:04answer is that
00:29:05they are built
00:29:06on their model
00:29:07of the kind.
00:29:09The difference
00:29:09is so great
00:29:10as to be
00:29:11startling.
00:29:14Tremendous
00:29:14convulsions and
00:29:16visitations of
00:29:17wrath are now
00:29:18unknown because
00:29:20God is now
00:29:21reconciling the
00:29:22world to himself
00:29:22and exhibiting in
00:29:24miracles the
00:29:25presence of him
00:29:25who is so not
00:29:27very far from
00:29:28every one of us.
00:29:29His presence in
00:29:30love to redeem
00:29:31the common life
00:29:32of man and to
00:29:33bless by sharing
00:29:35it, and
00:29:36therefore his
00:29:37gifts are
00:29:37homely.
00:29:38They deal with
00:29:39the average life
00:29:40and its
00:29:41necessities.
00:29:42Bread, wine
00:29:43and fish are
00:29:45more to the
00:29:45purpose than
00:29:46that man should
00:29:47eat angels'
00:29:48food, the
00:29:49rescue of the
00:29:49storm-tossed
00:29:50fishermen than
00:29:51the engulfment
00:29:52of pursuing
00:29:53armies, the
00:29:55healing of the
00:29:55prevalent disease
00:29:57than the
00:29:57plaguing of
00:29:58Egypt or the
00:30:00destruction of
00:30:01Sennacherib.
00:30:03Surely such
00:30:04a presence
00:30:05thus shown is
00:30:07the consistent
00:30:08doctrine of
00:30:09the church.
00:30:10It is a
00:30:11theory which
00:30:11men may reject
00:30:12at their own
00:30:13peril if they
00:30:14please, but
00:30:16they must not
00:30:16pretend to
00:30:17refute it by
00:30:18any appeal to
00:30:19either the
00:30:20uniformity of
00:30:21the law or
00:30:22the stability
00:30:23of force.
00:30:28Men tell us
00:30:29that the divinity
00:30:30of Jesus was
00:30:31an afterthought.
00:30:33what shall we
00:30:34say then to
00:30:34this fact,
00:30:35that men
00:30:36observed from
00:30:37the very first
00:30:38a difference
00:30:39between the
00:30:39manner of his
00:30:40miracles and
00:30:41those recorded
00:30:42in their
00:30:43scriptures, or
00:30:45that they could
00:30:45have deemed
00:30:46fit.
00:30:47It is exactly
00:30:49the same
00:30:49peculiarity carried
00:30:51to the highest
00:30:52pitch as they
00:30:53already felt in
00:30:54his discourses.
00:30:56They are
00:30:56brought without
00:30:57any reference
00:30:58whatsoever to a
00:30:59superior will.
00:31:01Moses cried out
00:31:03to the Lord
00:31:03saying,
00:31:04what shall I
00:31:05do?
00:31:07Elijah said,
00:31:09hear me,
00:31:10O Lord,
00:31:10hear me.
00:31:12But Jesus
00:31:13said,
00:31:14I will.
00:31:15I charge you,
00:31:17come out.
00:31:18I am able
00:31:19to do this.
00:31:24So marked is
00:31:25this change
00:31:26that even
00:31:27his followers
00:31:28cast out
00:31:28devils in
00:31:29his name
00:31:29and say
00:31:30not,
00:31:31where is
00:31:31the Lord
00:31:31God of
00:31:32Israel,
00:31:32but in
00:31:33the name
00:31:34of Jesus
00:31:34Christ of
00:31:35Nazareth.
00:31:37His power
00:31:38is inherent,
00:31:39it is
00:31:40self-possessed,
00:31:41and his
00:31:42acts in
00:31:42the synoptics
00:31:43are only
00:31:44explained by
00:31:45his words
00:31:46in St.
00:31:46John.
00:31:49Whatever
00:31:49things the
00:31:50father does,
00:31:51these also
00:31:52the son
00:31:52does in
00:31:53a similar
00:31:54manner.
00:31:57No wonder
00:31:58then that
00:31:58St.
00:31:59Mark's
00:31:59had to
00:31:59his very
00:32:00first
00:32:00record of
00:32:01a miracle
00:32:01that the
00:32:02people were
00:32:03amazed and
00:32:03asked,
00:32:04what is
00:32:04this,
00:32:05this new
00:32:06teaching?
00:32:07With
00:32:07authority he
00:32:08commands even
00:32:09the unclean
00:32:10spirits,
00:32:10and they
00:32:11obey him.
00:32:13It was at
00:32:14a divinity
00:32:15which,
00:32:16without
00:32:16recognizing it,
00:32:18they felt
00:32:18implicit in
00:32:19his bearing.
00:32:21No wonder
00:32:22also that
00:32:23his enemies
00:32:23strove so
00:32:25hard to
00:32:25make him
00:32:26say,
00:32:27who gave
00:32:28you this
00:32:28authority?
00:32:30Nor could
00:32:31they succeed
00:32:31in drawing
00:32:32from him
00:32:32any sign
00:32:33from heaven.
00:32:36The center
00:32:37and source
00:32:37of the
00:32:38supernatural
00:32:38for human
00:32:40apprehension
00:32:40has shifted
00:32:42itself.
00:32:42the vision
00:32:44of Jesus
00:32:44is the
00:32:45vision
00:32:46of the
00:32:46Father
00:32:46also.
00:32:51So we
00:32:52have seen
00:32:53that belief
00:32:53in the
00:32:54stability
00:32:54of natural
00:32:55law
00:32:55does not
00:32:56forbid us
00:32:57believing
00:32:57in miracles.
00:33:02But there
00:33:03are special
00:33:04objections,
00:33:05however,
00:33:06against the
00:33:06belief in
00:33:07demonic
00:33:08possession.
00:33:10the very
00:33:11existence of
00:33:12demons is
00:33:12declared to
00:33:13be inconsistent
00:33:14with the
00:33:15omnipotence of
00:33:16God, or
00:33:17else with
00:33:18his goodness.
00:33:20It may be
00:33:21granted that
00:33:22an abstract
00:33:23reasoning in
00:33:24an ideal
00:33:24world,
00:33:26thoughts moving
00:33:27in a vacuum,
00:33:29would scarcely
00:33:29evolve the
00:33:30state of
00:33:30things so far
00:33:31removed from
00:33:32this ideal.
00:33:35this, however,
00:33:36is an argument
00:33:37against the
00:33:37existence, not
00:33:39of demons, but
00:33:40of evil in
00:33:41any shape.
00:33:43It is the
00:33:43familiar,
00:33:44insoluble
00:33:45problem of
00:33:46all religion.
00:33:48How might
00:33:49evil exist in
00:33:50the universe
00:33:51of God?
00:33:53And is it
00:33:54balanced by
00:33:55the insoluble
00:33:56problem of
00:33:56all irreligious
00:33:58systems?
00:33:59If the
00:34:00universe is
00:34:01without God,
00:34:02then how can
00:34:03either good
00:34:04or evil
00:34:04exist, as
00:34:06distinguished from
00:34:08the advantageous
00:34:09and the
00:34:10unprofitable?
00:34:12Where does
00:34:13this unquestionable
00:34:14difference between
00:34:15a lie and
00:34:16bad?
00:34:19But the
00:34:20argument against
00:34:22evil spirits
00:34:22professes to
00:34:24be something
00:34:24more than
00:34:25the disguised
00:34:26reproduction of
00:34:27this abstract
00:34:28problem.
00:34:30So what
00:34:31more is it?
00:34:32What is
00:34:32gained by
00:34:33denying the
00:34:34fiends?
00:34:35As long as
00:34:36we cannot
00:34:36deny the
00:34:37fiends
00:34:37incarnate,
00:34:40the men
00:34:41who take
00:34:42pleasure in
00:34:43unrighteousness,
00:34:44in the
00:34:45seduction and
00:34:46ruin of
00:34:46their fellows,
00:34:47in the
00:34:48infliction of
00:34:48torture and
00:34:49outrage, in
00:34:50the ravage and
00:34:51desolation of
00:34:52nations.
00:34:54Such freedom
00:34:55has been
00:34:56granted to
00:34:57the human
00:34:58will, for
00:34:59even these
00:35:00ghastly issues
00:35:00have not been
00:35:01judged so
00:35:02deadly as
00:35:03coercion and
00:35:04moral fatalism.
00:35:07What
00:35:08presumption
00:35:08could possibly
00:35:09remain against
00:35:10the existence
00:35:11of other
00:35:11beings than
00:35:12men, who
00:35:13have fallen
00:35:14yet further?
00:35:16if indeed
00:35:17it be
00:35:18certainly so
00:35:19much further.
00:35:20For we
00:35:21know that
00:35:21men have
00:35:22lived, not
00:35:22outcast from
00:35:23society, but
00:35:25boastful sons
00:35:26of Abraham, who
00:35:28willed to
00:35:29perform the
00:35:29lusts of
00:35:31their father, the
00:35:31devil.
00:35:33Now, since we
00:35:34are not told
00:35:35that the
00:35:35wickedness of
00:35:36demons is
00:35:37infinite, but
00:35:39only that it
00:35:40is abysmal, and
00:35:41since we know
00:35:42that the
00:35:43abysses of
00:35:44wickedness do
00:35:45actually exist, but
00:35:48only that it
00:35:48is abysmal, and
00:35:50since we know
00:35:51that abysses of
00:35:52wickedness do
00:35:53actually exist, what
00:35:55sort of vindication
00:35:56of deity is
00:35:57this, which
00:35:58will believe that
00:35:59such gulfs are
00:36:00yawning only in
00:36:02the bosom of
00:36:03man?
00:36:07It alarms and
00:36:09shocks us to
00:36:09think that
00:36:10evil spirits
00:36:11have power
00:36:12over the
00:36:13human mind, and
00:36:14still more that
00:36:15such power
00:36:15should extend
00:36:16as in the
00:36:17case of a
00:36:17possession, even
00:36:19to the body.
00:36:21Evil men,
00:36:22however, manifestly
00:36:24wield such
00:36:25power.
00:36:28Social and
00:36:30intellectual
00:36:30charm, high
00:36:32rank, the
00:36:33mysterious
00:36:33attraction of
00:36:34a strong
00:36:35individuality, are
00:36:36all employed from
00:36:38time to time to
00:36:39mislead and
00:36:39debase the
00:36:41shuddering,
00:36:42reluctant, mesmerized
00:36:44wills of weak
00:36:45men and
00:36:46women.
00:36:47The mind
00:36:48acts upon the
00:36:49body, as
00:36:50perhaps it
00:36:51always does.
00:36:53Drunkenness and
00:36:53debauchery undermine
00:36:55the nerves.
00:36:57Paralysis and
00:36:58lunacy tread
00:37:00hard on the
00:37:01footsteps of
00:37:02excess.
00:37:03Experience knows
00:37:05of no reason
00:37:05for denying
00:37:06that when
00:37:08wickedness conquers
00:37:09the soul, it
00:37:10will also deal
00:37:11harshly with
00:37:12the body.
00:37:18But we
00:37:19cannot stop
00:37:20here, for
00:37:22the Gospels do
00:37:22not countenance
00:37:23the popular
00:37:24notion that
00:37:25the special
00:37:25wickedness was
00:37:26the cause of
00:37:28the fearful
00:37:28wretchedness of
00:37:29the possessed.
00:37:31Young children
00:37:32suffered.
00:37:33Jesus often
00:37:34cautioned a
00:37:35sufferer to
00:37:36sin no more,
00:37:37lest worst
00:37:38results should
00:37:39follow than
00:37:40those that he
00:37:41had removed.
00:37:43but he
00:37:44never said such
00:37:45a warning to
00:37:46demoniacs.
00:37:47They suffered
00:37:48from the
00:37:49tyranny of
00:37:49Satan rather
00:37:51than from
00:37:51his seduction.
00:37:53And the
00:37:54analogies which
00:37:55make credible
00:37:55so frightful and
00:37:57outrage upon
00:37:58human nature
00:37:59are the wrongs
00:38:01done by
00:38:01despots and
00:38:02mobs, by
00:38:03invading armies
00:38:04and persecuting
00:38:05religions.
00:38:07Yet the
00:38:08people who
00:38:08cannot believe
00:38:09that a demon
00:38:10could throw a
00:38:11child upon
00:38:12the fire
00:38:12are not
00:38:14incredulous
00:38:14of Attila,
00:38:16Napoleon or
00:38:17the Inquisition.
00:38:20Thus it
00:38:22appears that
00:38:22such a
00:38:23narrative
00:38:23need startle
00:38:25no believer
00:38:25in God
00:38:26and in
00:38:27moral good
00:38:28and evil
00:38:28who considers
00:38:30the unquestionable
00:38:31facts of
00:38:32life.
00:38:33How often
00:38:34will the
00:38:35observant
00:38:35Christian be
00:38:36startled at
00:38:37the wild
00:38:38insurrection
00:38:38and surging
00:38:40up of evil
00:38:40thought and
00:38:41dark suggestions
00:38:42which he
00:38:44cannot believe
00:38:44to be his
00:38:45own, which
00:38:46will not be
00:38:46gainsaid or
00:38:47repulsed?
00:38:49How easily
00:38:50do such
00:38:51experiences fall
00:38:52in with the
00:38:53plain words of
00:38:54scripture, by
00:38:56which the
00:38:56veil is drawn
00:38:57aside and
00:38:58the mystery of
00:38:59the spiritual
00:39:00world laid
00:39:01bare?
00:39:02Then we
00:39:03learn that man
00:39:04is not only
00:39:05fallen, but
00:39:06assaulted, not
00:39:07only feeble, but
00:39:09enslaved, not
00:39:10only a wandering
00:39:11sheep, but
00:39:13under the power
00:39:14of Satan at
00:39:15his will.
00:39:24So let us
00:39:25turn to the
00:39:26narrative
00:39:27read today.
00:39:30They are
00:39:31still wondering
00:39:32at our
00:39:32Lord's
00:39:33authority
00:39:33manner, when
00:39:34straight away
00:39:35for opportunities
00:39:37were countless
00:39:38until unbelief
00:39:40arose.
00:39:40a man with
00:39:42an unclean
00:39:43spirit attracted
00:39:44his attention.
00:39:46We can
00:39:47only speculate
00:39:49as to the
00:39:50special meaning
00:39:51of this
00:39:51description.
00:39:54One might
00:39:54say, like the
00:39:55rest, he had
00:39:56his dwelling
00:39:57place among
00:39:57the tombs, and
00:39:59overpowering
00:40:00influence had
00:40:01driven him
00:40:01away from the
00:40:02haunts of
00:40:03men.
00:40:04To others,
00:40:05perhaps,
00:40:06feature the
00:40:06wretchedness of
00:40:07the gathering
00:40:08may perhaps
00:40:09seem rather
00:40:09too exceptional,
00:40:11the last touch
00:40:12in the appalling
00:40:13picture of his
00:40:15misery.
00:40:16It could very
00:40:17well be that
00:40:17nothing more
00:40:18outrageous than
00:40:19morbid gloom
00:40:20or sullen
00:40:21mutterings had
00:40:22so far made
00:40:23it necessary to
00:40:24exclude this
00:40:25sufferer from
00:40:26the synagogue.
00:40:29Or the
00:40:30language, perhaps,
00:40:31suggests even
00:40:32that he rushed
00:40:33in, driven by
00:40:35the frantic
00:40:36hostility of
00:40:37the fiend, or
00:40:38impelled by
00:40:39some mysterious
00:40:40and lingering
00:40:41hope, as in
00:40:43the same way
00:40:44the man of
00:40:45Gadara ran
00:40:46to Christ.
00:40:50What we do
00:40:51know is that
00:40:52the sacred
00:40:53presence provoked
00:40:55a crisis.
00:40:57There is an
00:40:58unbelief which
00:40:59can never be
00:40:59silent, never
00:41:02wearies, railing
00:41:03at the faith, and
00:41:05there is a
00:41:05corruption which
00:41:06resents goodness
00:41:07and hates it
00:41:08as a personal
00:41:09wrong.
00:41:11So the demons
00:41:12who possessed
00:41:13men were never
00:41:13able to
00:41:14confront Jesus
00:41:15calmly.
00:41:17They resent
00:41:18bitterly his
00:41:19interference.
00:41:20They cry out.
00:41:22They disclaim
00:41:22having anything to
00:41:23do with him.
00:41:25They seem
00:41:26indignant that
00:41:27he should come
00:41:27to destroy them
00:41:28who have destroyed
00:41:30so many.
00:41:32but there is
00:41:33something weird
00:41:34and unearthly in
00:41:35this complaint.
00:41:36Men are
00:41:37wont to forget
00:41:38their wrong
00:41:39doing when
00:41:40they themselves
00:41:40come to
00:41:41suffer, and
00:41:42it is recorded
00:41:43that even
00:41:44Nero had an
00:41:45abundance of
00:41:45compassion upon
00:41:46himself.
00:41:48Weird also
00:41:49and terrible it
00:41:51is that this
00:41:52unclean spirit
00:41:53should choose
00:41:53for his
00:41:54confession,
00:41:56that pure and
00:41:57exquisite epithet,
00:41:59the Holy
00:42:00One of
00:42:00God.
00:42:04The only
00:42:05other time
00:42:05this phrase
00:42:07appears is
00:42:09as spoken
00:42:10by St.
00:42:10Peter.
00:42:11We believe
00:42:12and know
00:42:13that you are
00:42:13the Holy
00:42:14One of
00:42:14God,
00:42:14John 6
00:42:1569.
00:42:18Was it
00:42:19not a
00:42:19mournful
00:42:19association
00:42:20of ideas
00:42:21which then
00:42:22led Jesus
00:42:23to reply,
00:42:24have I not
00:42:25chosen you
00:42:26the twelve
00:42:26and one
00:42:27of you
00:42:27is a
00:42:28devil?
00:42:30But
00:42:31although the
00:42:31phrase is
00:42:32beautiful and
00:42:33perhaps wild
00:42:35with regret,
00:42:36there is no
00:42:37relenting, no
00:42:38better desire
00:42:39than to be
00:42:40let alone.
00:42:42And so
00:42:42Jesus, so
00:42:44gentle with
00:42:44sinful men,
00:42:46yet sometimes
00:42:47to be their
00:42:47judge also,
00:42:49is stern
00:42:50and cold.
00:42:52Hold
00:42:52your peace,
00:42:54be muzzled,
00:42:55he answers
00:42:56as if
00:42:57to a wild
00:42:58beast
00:42:58and come
00:43:00out of
00:43:00him,
00:43:02whereupon
00:43:03the evil
00:43:03spirit at
00:43:04once
00:43:04exhibits
00:43:05his
00:43:05ferocity
00:43:06and his
00:43:07capitulation.
00:43:11Cheering
00:43:12and screaming
00:43:13he came
00:43:13out,
00:43:14but we
00:43:15read in
00:43:15St.
00:43:16Luke
00:43:16that he
00:43:16did the
00:43:17man
00:43:17no
00:43:17harm.
00:43:22The
00:43:22spectators
00:43:23drew
00:43:24the
00:43:24correct
00:43:24inference.
00:43:26A new
00:43:27power
00:43:27implied a
00:43:28new
00:43:29revelation.
00:43:31Something
00:43:31far-reaching
00:43:32and profound
00:43:33might be
00:43:34expected from
00:43:35the one who
00:43:36commanded
00:43:36even an
00:43:37evil spirit
00:43:38with authority
00:43:39and was
00:43:40obeyed.
00:43:46it was
00:43:47the
00:43:47custom
00:43:47of
00:43:48unbelievers
00:43:48to speak
00:43:49as if
00:43:50the
00:43:50heir of
00:43:50Palestine
00:43:51were then
00:43:52surcharged
00:43:53with the
00:43:53belief in
00:43:54the
00:43:54supernatural.
00:43:56Miracles
00:43:56happened
00:43:57everywhere
00:43:57and so
00:43:58they would
00:43:58explain the
00:43:59way the
00:43:59significance
00:44:00of the
00:44:00popular
00:44:01belief
00:44:02that our
00:44:02Lord
00:44:02wrought
00:44:03signs and
00:44:03wonders.
00:44:05But in
00:44:06so doing
00:44:06they set
00:44:07themselves
00:44:07up with
00:44:08a worse
00:44:09problem
00:44:09than the
00:44:10one they
00:44:10chose to
00:44:10avoid.
00:44:12If
00:44:12miracles
00:44:12were so
00:44:13very common
00:44:13it would
00:44:14be as
00:44:15easy to
00:44:15believe
00:44:16that Jesus
00:44:17wrought
00:44:18them as
00:44:19he that
00:44:20worked at
00:44:21his father's
00:44:21bench.
00:44:22But also
00:44:23it would be
00:44:24inconclusive.
00:44:25How then
00:44:26might we
00:44:27explain the
00:44:27astonishment
00:44:28which all
00:44:30the evangelists
00:44:30so
00:44:31constantly
00:44:32recalled?
00:44:34On any
00:44:35conceivable
00:44:36theory these
00:44:37writers shared
00:44:38the beliefs
00:44:39of their
00:44:40age.
00:44:40and so
00:44:41did the
00:44:42readers who
00:44:43accepted their
00:44:44assurance that
00:44:44all were
00:44:45amazed and
00:44:47that his
00:44:47report went
00:44:48out straight
00:44:49away everywhere
00:44:50throughout the
00:44:51region of
00:44:51Galilee.
00:44:53These are
00:44:54emphatic
00:44:55words and
00:44:58both author
00:44:58and reader
00:44:59must have
00:45:00considered the
00:45:01miracle to be
00:45:02more surprising
00:45:03than modern
00:45:04critics believe
00:45:05they did.
00:45:08and yet we
00:45:09do not
00:45:10read that
00:45:10anyone was
00:45:11converted by
00:45:12this miracle.
00:45:14They were
00:45:14amazed
00:45:15certainly
00:45:16but wonder
00:45:17is not the
00:45:18same as
00:45:19surrender.
00:45:19they were
00:45:21contented to
00:45:22let their
00:45:22excitement
00:45:23die out
00:45:24as every
00:45:25violent
00:45:25emotion
00:45:26must
00:45:26but without
00:45:28any change
00:45:29of life
00:45:29any permanent
00:45:31devotion to
00:45:32this new
00:45:33teacher and
00:45:34his doctrine.
00:45:40St. Matthew
00:45:41tells us that
00:45:42on leaving
00:45:42the synagogue
00:45:43they entered
00:45:44into Peter's
00:45:45house.
00:45:47St. Mark
00:45:48with his
00:45:49peculiar
00:45:50source of
00:45:51information
00:45:51mentions that
00:45:53Andrew shared
00:45:55the house
00:45:55with his
00:45:56brother.
00:45:58A special
00:45:59interest attaches
00:46:00to the mention
00:46:01of the
00:46:01mother-in-law
00:46:02of Peter
00:46:03as proving
00:46:04that Jesus
00:46:05chose a
00:46:06married man
00:46:07to be an
00:46:08apostle.
00:46:09The very
00:46:10apostle from
00:46:11whom the
00:46:11celibate
00:46:12ministry of
00:46:13Rome
00:46:13professes to
00:46:14have received
00:46:15the keys.
00:46:19The evidence
00:46:20does not
00:46:21stand alone.
00:46:22When St. Paul's
00:46:23apostolic authority
00:46:25was impugned
00:46:26he insisted
00:46:27that he had
00:46:28the same right
00:46:28to bring with
00:46:29him in his
00:46:30travels a
00:46:30believing wife
00:46:31as Peter
00:46:32exercised.
00:46:34St. Clement
00:46:35of Alexandria
00:46:36tells us
00:46:37that Peter's
00:46:38wife acted
00:46:39as his
00:46:40co-adjudica
00:46:42ministering to
00:46:43women in
00:46:44their own
00:46:44homes by
00:46:45which means
00:46:46the gospel
00:46:46of Christ
00:46:47penetrated
00:46:48without scandal
00:46:49the privacy
00:46:50of women's
00:46:50apartments.
00:46:52Thus the
00:46:53notion of a
00:46:54woman's mission
00:46:55is by no
00:46:56means modern.
00:47:00mother of
00:47:02such a wife
00:47:02has been
00:47:03afflicted by
00:47:04a fever
00:47:04of the
00:47:05kind which
00:47:05still haunts
00:47:06us every
00:47:07day and
00:47:09they tell
00:47:09him about
00:47:10her.
00:47:13Doubtless
00:47:13there was
00:47:14hope in
00:47:14their voices
00:47:15even if
00:47:16desire did
00:47:16not take
00:47:17the shape
00:47:17of a
00:47:18formal
00:47:18prayer.
00:47:20For we
00:47:20are just
00:47:21emerging from
00:47:22that early
00:47:22period when
00:47:23belief in
00:47:24his power
00:47:24to heal
00:47:25might still
00:47:26be united
00:47:26with some
00:47:27doubt
00:47:28whether free
00:47:29application
00:47:29might be
00:47:30made to
00:47:31him.
00:47:32His
00:47:33disciples
00:47:34might still
00:47:35be as
00:47:35unwise as
00:47:36those modern
00:47:37theologians
00:47:38who were so
00:47:38busy studying
00:47:39the miracles
00:47:40as a sign
00:47:41that they
00:47:41forget to
00:47:42think of
00:47:43them as
00:47:43works of
00:47:44love.
00:47:46Any such
00:47:47hesitation
00:47:48was now
00:47:49to be
00:47:50dispelled
00:47:50however.
00:47:54It is
00:47:55possible that
00:47:56such is the
00:47:56meaning of
00:47:57the expression
00:47:57and if so
00:47:59it has a
00:48:00useful lesson
00:48:01for us.
00:48:03Sometimes
00:48:03there are
00:48:04temporal
00:48:05gifts which
00:48:05we scarce
00:48:06know of
00:48:07whether we
00:48:08should pray
00:48:08for or
00:48:10so complex
00:48:11are our
00:48:11feelings.
00:48:12So entangled
00:48:13are interests
00:48:14with those
00:48:15of others
00:48:15so obscure
00:48:16and dubious
00:48:17the springs
00:48:18which move
00:48:19our desire.
00:48:19is it
00:48:21presumptuous
00:48:22to ask?
00:48:27Indeed
00:48:28can it be
00:48:29right to
00:48:30keep anything
00:48:30back in
00:48:31our communion
00:48:32with our
00:48:34Father?
00:48:38Now there
00:48:39is a
00:48:40curious
00:48:40similarity
00:48:41between the
00:48:42expression
00:48:43they tell
00:48:44Jesus of
00:48:45her
00:48:45and that
00:48:46phrase which
00:48:47is applied
00:48:47only to
00:48:47prayer when
00:48:48St Paul
00:48:49bids us
00:48:49pray for
00:48:50all the
00:48:51things that
00:48:52are in
00:48:52our hearts.
00:48:55In
00:48:56nothing be
00:48:56anxious but
00:48:58in everything
00:48:58by prayer
00:48:59and supplication
00:49:01with
00:49:02thanksgiving
00:49:03let your
00:49:03requests be
00:49:04made known
00:49:05unto God
00:49:07and so
00:49:08shall the
00:49:08great benediction
00:49:09be fulfilled.
00:49:11The peace
00:49:11of God
00:49:12which passes
00:49:13all understanding
00:49:13guard your
00:49:15hearts and
00:49:16your thoughts
00:49:18for the
00:49:19pains
00:49:19four
00:49:19six
00:49:20and
00:49:20seven
00:49:22all that
00:49:23is unholy
00:49:23shall be
00:49:24purified
00:49:24all that
00:49:25is unwise
00:49:26subdued
00:49:27all that
00:49:28is expedient
00:49:30granted.
00:49:36If this
00:49:37be indeed
00:49:38the force
00:49:38of St Mark's
00:49:39phrase
00:49:40Jesus felt
00:49:41the modest
00:49:42reticence
00:49:42to be a
00:49:43strong appeal
00:49:44for St Luke
00:49:46says they
00:49:47besought him
00:49:48while St Matthew
00:49:49really writes
00:49:50that he saw
00:49:51her lying.
00:49:53The
00:49:54interpreter
00:49:54of St Peter
00:49:55is most
00:49:56likely to
00:49:57have caught
00:49:57the exact
00:49:58shade of
00:49:58anxiety
00:49:59and appeal
00:50:00by which
00:50:01her friends
00:50:01drew his
00:50:02attention
00:50:02and which
00:50:04was indeed
00:50:04a prayer.
00:50:08The
00:50:09gentle
00:50:09courtesy
00:50:10of our
00:50:11Lord's
00:50:11healings
00:50:12cannot be
00:50:13too much
00:50:13studied
00:50:14by those
00:50:14who would
00:50:15know his
00:50:15mind
00:50:16and love
00:50:17him
00:50:19for he
00:50:19never throws
00:50:20a careless
00:50:21blessing
00:50:22as
00:50:23coarse
00:50:23benefactors
00:50:24fling their
00:50:24arms.
00:50:26We shall
00:50:27see
00:50:27hereafter
00:50:28how far
00:50:29he was
00:50:30from leaving
00:50:31fallen bread
00:50:32to be
00:50:32snatched
00:50:33as by a
00:50:34dog
00:50:34even by
00:50:35the one
00:50:35who would
00:50:36have
00:50:36welcomed
00:50:36the boon
00:50:37thus
00:50:38contemptuously
00:50:39given to
00:50:39her.
00:50:41And in
00:50:41the hour
00:50:42of his
00:50:42arrest
00:50:43when he
00:50:44would heal
00:50:44the ear
00:50:45of a
00:50:45persecutor
00:50:46his
00:50:47courtesy
00:50:48appeals
00:50:49to those
00:50:49who had
00:50:50laid
00:50:50hold
00:50:50on him
00:50:52suffer
00:50:53you
00:50:53thus
00:50:54far.
00:50:55And so
00:50:56he went
00:50:57to this
00:50:57woman
00:50:58and took
00:50:59her by
00:50:59the hand
00:50:59and raised
00:51:00her up
00:51:01laying a
00:51:02cool touch
00:51:03on her
00:51:03fevered
00:51:04palm
00:51:04bestowing
00:51:05his strength
00:51:06on her
00:51:07weakness
00:51:07healing her
00:51:08as he
00:51:09would heal
00:51:10humanity
00:51:11for at
00:51:13his touch
00:51:13the disease
00:51:14was banished
00:51:15with his
00:51:16impulse
00:51:17her strength
00:51:18returned.
00:51:22we do
00:51:23not read
00:51:24that she
00:51:24felt
00:51:25bound
00:51:25immediately
00:51:27to become
00:51:28an
00:51:28obtrusive
00:51:29public

00:51:30powers
00:51:31that was
00:51:32not

00:51:33but in
00:51:34her
00:51:34quiet

00:55:56the historian
00:55:57of christ's
00:55:58activities
00:56:00from him
00:56:01chiefly
00:56:01we learn
00:56:02to add
00:56:02to our
00:56:03thought
00:56:03of perfect
00:56:04love
00:56:04and gentleness
00:56:05that of
00:56:06one
00:56:06whom the
00:56:07zeal
00:56:07of god's
00:56:08house
00:56:08ate up
00:56:10but the evangelist
00:56:12does not
00:56:12omit to tell
00:56:13us by what
00:56:13secret fountains
00:56:14this river
00:56:15of life
00:56:15was fed
00:56:16how the
00:56:17active
00:56:18labours
00:56:18of Jesus
00:56:18were inspired
00:56:20by secret
00:56:21prayer
00:56:23too often
00:56:24we allow
00:56:25one side
00:56:26of religion
00:56:26a development
00:56:27which is not
00:56:28excessive
00:56:28but disproportionate
00:56:30and we are
00:56:31punished
00:56:31when contemplation
00:56:33becomes
00:56:33nerveless
00:56:34or energy
00:56:35burns
00:56:36itself
00:56:36away
00:56:40after feeding
00:56:41the 5000
00:56:42st mark
00:56:43tells us
00:56:43that Jesus
00:56:45while the storm
00:56:47gathered over
00:56:47the disciples
00:56:48upon the lake
00:56:49went
00:56:50into the
00:56:51mountains
00:56:51to pray
00:56:55st luke
00:56:56tells of
00:56:56a whole night
00:56:57of prayer
00:56:58before the
00:56:59disciples
00:56:59were chosen
00:57:00and how it
00:57:01was to pray
00:57:02that they
00:57:03ascended the
00:57:04mountain
00:57:04of the
00:57:05transfiguration
00:57:07we read
00:57:08of him going
00:57:09into a desert
00:57:09place with
00:57:10his disciples
00:57:11and to
00:57:12Olivet
00:57:12and often
00:57:13to the
00:57:14garden
00:57:14where Judas
00:57:15would find
00:57:16him
00:57:16where in
00:57:17the dead
00:57:18of night
00:57:18the traitor
00:57:19naturally
00:57:20went
00:57:21to seek
00:57:22him
00:57:23prayer
00:57:24prayer
00:57:24was the
00:57:24font of
00:57:25all his
00:57:25energy
00:57:26and his
00:57:27own
00:57:27saying
00:57:27indicated
00:57:28the
00:57:29habit
00:57:29of his
00:57:29mortal
00:57:30life
00:57:30as truly
00:57:31as the
00:57:32law
00:57:32of his
00:57:33mysterious
00:57:33generation
00:57:34i live
00:57:36by the
00:57:37father
00:57:42his prayers
00:57:44impress nothing
00:57:45on us
00:57:45more powerfully
00:57:46than the
00:57:47reality of
00:57:48his manhood
00:57:48he who
00:57:51possesses all
00:57:52things
00:57:52bends his
00:57:53knees to
00:57:54crave
00:57:54and his
00:57:55prayers are
00:57:56definite
00:57:56not empty
00:57:58words
00:57:58no homage
00:57:59without sense
00:58:00of need
00:58:01no firing
00:58:02of blank
00:58:03cartridges
00:58:03without aim
00:58:04he asks
00:58:06that the
00:58:07disciples may
00:58:08be with him
00:58:08where he is
00:58:09that Simon's
00:58:10strength may
00:58:11not fail
00:58:11that he
00:58:12himself may
00:58:13be saved
00:58:14from such
00:58:14a dreadful
00:58:15hour
00:58:19and so
00:58:20the entire
00:58:20evening had
00:58:21been passed
00:58:22in healing
00:58:23the diseases
00:58:23of the town
00:58:24not the
00:58:26light and
00:58:27careless
00:58:27bestowal
00:58:28of a
00:58:28boon
00:58:29which cost
00:58:29nothing
00:58:30but wrought
00:58:31with so
00:58:32much sympathy
00:58:33such
00:58:33draining
00:58:34of his
00:58:34own
00:58:35vital
00:58:35life
00:58:36forces
00:58:36that
00:58:37Saint
00:58:37Matthew
00:58:37found
00:58:38in it
00:58:38a
00:58:39fulfilment
00:58:40of the
00:58:40prophecy
00:58:40that he
00:58:42should
00:58:42himself
00:58:42bear
00:58:43our
00:58:43sicknesses
00:58:44upon
00:58:45himself
00:58:46and thus
00:58:47exhausted
00:58:48the frame
00:58:49might have
00:58:50been forgiven
00:58:50for demanding
00:58:51some
00:58:52indulgence
00:58:52some
00:58:53prolongation
00:58:55of repose
00:58:56some
00:58:56permission
00:58:57to sleep
00:58:58in
00:58:58in the
00:58:59morning
00:58:59but the
00:59:01course of
00:59:01our Lord's
00:59:02ministry
00:59:02was now
00:59:03opening up
00:59:04before him
00:59:04and the
00:59:05hindrances
00:59:06becoming
00:59:07visible
00:59:07how much
00:59:09was to be
00:59:10hoped from
00:59:10the great
00:59:11impression
00:59:11already made
00:59:12how much
00:59:13to be feared
00:59:14from the
00:59:15weaknesses
00:59:15of his
00:59:16followers
00:59:17the incipient
00:59:18envy of
00:59:19priest and
00:59:20Pharisee
00:59:20the volatile
00:59:21excitability
00:59:22of the
00:59:23crowd
00:59:25at such
00:59:26a time
00:59:26to relieve
00:59:27his burdened
00:59:28heart
00:59:28with divine
00:59:29communion
00:59:30was more
00:59:31to Jesus
00:59:31than any
00:59:32amount
00:59:32of sleep
00:59:33as at
00:59:34another time
00:59:35to serve
00:59:36him
00:59:36was meat
00:59:37to eat
00:59:39therefore
00:59:40in the still
00:59:41small hours
00:59:42of the fresh
00:59:43morning long
00:59:43before the
00:59:44dawn
00:59:44while every
00:59:45earthly sight
00:59:46was dim
00:59:47but the
00:59:48abysses of
00:59:49the heavens
00:59:49were vivid
00:59:50declaring
00:59:51without voice
00:59:52amid the
00:59:52silence
00:59:53of the
00:59:53earth's
00:59:54discord
00:59:54the glory
00:59:55and the
00:59:56handiwork
00:59:56of the
00:59:57father
00:59:57Jesus
00:59:58went out
00:59:59to a
01:00:00solitary
01:00:00place
01:00:01and prayed
01:00:07what is it
01:00:08that makes
01:00:08this solitude
01:00:09and darkness
01:00:10so dreadful
01:00:11to some
01:00:12people
01:00:12and oppressive
01:00:14to many
01:00:16partly perhaps
01:00:17the sense
01:00:18of physical
01:00:18danger
01:00:19born of
01:00:20helplessness
01:00:21and uncertainty
01:00:23this of course
01:00:24Jesus never
01:00:25felt
01:00:25who knew
01:00:26that he must
01:00:27walk today
01:00:28and tomorrow
01:00:28and on the
01:00:29third day
01:00:29would be
01:00:30perfected
01:00:31and partly
01:00:32it is the
01:00:33weight of
01:00:33an unwelcome
01:00:34reflection
01:00:35the searching
01:00:36and rebuking
01:00:37of memory
01:00:39the fears
01:00:41that come
01:00:41from guilt
01:00:43inward
01:00:43distractions
01:00:44of a nature
01:00:45estranged
01:00:46from the
01:00:47true nature
01:00:47of the
01:00:48universe
01:00:51but Jesus
01:00:52was agitated
01:00:53by no
01:00:53internal
01:00:54discord
01:00:55upbraided
01:00:56by no
01:00:56remorse
01:00:57he probably
01:00:58had no
01:00:59dreams
01:01:00he is
01:01:01never
01:01:01recorded
01:01:02as
01:01:02soliloquizing
01:01:03solitude
01:01:04to him
01:01:05was but
01:01:05another
01:01:06name
01:01:06for
01:01:06communion
01:01:06with
01:01:07God
01:01:07his
01:01:07father
01:01:08he was
01:01:09never
01:01:10alone
01:01:10for
01:01:11God
01:01:11was
01:01:12always
01:01:12with
01:01:13him
01:01:16this
01:01:16retirement
01:01:17enabled
01:01:17him
01:01:18to remain
01:01:18undisturbed
01:01:19until
01:01:21after dawn
01:01:22his
01:01:22disciples
01:01:23found him
01:01:25long
01:01:26after the
01:01:27crowds
01:01:27had besieged
01:01:28their
01:01:28dwelling
01:01:30they had
01:01:31not yet
01:01:31learned
01:01:32how all
01:01:33true
01:01:33external
01:01:34life
01:01:34must rest
01:01:35upon the
01:01:35hidden
01:01:36life
01:01:36of quiet
01:01:37devotion
01:01:38and there
01:01:39is an
01:01:39accent of
01:01:40regret in
01:01:40his words
01:01:41all are
01:01:43seeking you
01:01:44as if
01:01:45Jesus
01:01:45could

01:01:58in
01:01:58these
01:01:58times
01:01:59of
01:01:59missions
01:02:01demonstrations
01:02:02and other
01:02:04wise or
01:02:04unwise
01:02:05attempts
01:02:06to gather
01:02:07excited

01:02:08around
01:02:09the
01:02:09cross
01:02:12mere
01:02:13sensation
01:02:13was repulsive
01:02:15to
01:02:16Jesus
01:02:16again
01:02:17and again
01:02:18he charged
01:02:18men
01:02:19not to
01:02:19make him
01:02:19known
01:02:20in places
01:02:21where he
01:02:22would stay
01:02:25while in
01:02:25Gadara
01:02:26where he
01:02:26had to
01:02:27leave
01:02:27his command
01:02:29to the
01:02:29demoniac
01:02:30was the
01:02:30reverse
01:02:31deep
01:02:32and real
01:02:33convictions
01:02:33are not
01:02:35of kin

01:02:36sightseeing
01:02:37and the

01:02:38of wonders
01:02:38and
01:02:39entertainment
01:02:42Capernaum
01:02:42had now
01:02:43amply
01:02:44heard his
01:02:45message
01:02:45has received
01:02:46his full
01:02:47share
01:02:47of healing
01:02:48is exalted
01:02:49unto heaven
01:02:50those who
01:02:51are looking
01:02:52for redemption
01:02:52knew the
01:02:53gospel
01:02:53and Jesus
01:02:55must preach
01:02:55it also
01:02:56to other
01:02:57tones
01:02:58therefore
01:02:59and not to
01:03:00be the
01:03:00centre of
01:03:01an admiring
01:03:01multitude
01:03:02he went
01:03:03out from
01:03:04his quiet
01:03:04home
01:03:06such
01:03:07is the
01:03:07sane
01:03:08and tranquil
01:03:09well-considered
01:03:10action
01:03:10of Jesus
01:03:11in the
01:03:12face of
01:03:12the excitement
01:03:13of the
01:03:13rabble
01:03:14caused
01:03:15by his
01:03:15many
01:03:15miracles
01:03:17now the
01:03:18miracles
01:03:18themselves
01:03:19and all
01:03:19that depended
01:03:20upon them
01:03:20are declared
01:03:21to be the
01:03:22creation
01:03:22of the
01:03:23wildest
01:03:24fanaticism
01:03:25either
01:03:26during his
01:03:27lifetime
01:03:27or developing
01:03:28his legend
01:03:29afterward
01:03:30and if so
01:03:32we have
01:03:32here
01:03:33in the
01:03:33action
01:03:34of the
01:03:34human
01:03:35mind
01:03:35the marvel
01:03:36of modern
01:03:36physicists
01:03:37ice
01:03:38from a
01:03:39red
01:03:39hot
01:03:39retort
01:03:40absolute
01:03:41moderation
01:03:41from a
01:03:42dream
01:03:43of
01:03:43frenzy
01:03:45this
01:03:45paradox
01:03:46is created
01:03:47in the
01:03:47act of
01:03:47explaining
01:03:48the
01:03:49miracles
01:03:49the
01:03:50explanation
01:03:51even if
01:03:52it were
01:03:53sustained
01:03:53by evidence
01:03:54would be
01:03:55as difficult
01:03:56as any
01:03:57miracle
01:03:57to believe
01:04:03the
01:04:04disease
01:04:04of leprosy
01:04:05was
01:04:05particularly
01:04:06fearful
01:04:07to the
01:04:07Jew
01:04:07in its
01:04:10stealthy
01:04:10beginnings
01:04:11its
01:04:11irresistible
01:04:12advance
01:04:13the utter
01:04:14ruin
01:04:14which it
01:04:15would
01:04:15wrought
01:04:15from
01:04:16blood
01:04:17flowing
01:04:17outward
01:04:18until the
01:04:19flesh
01:04:19was corroded
01:04:20and fell
01:04:21off
01:04:21it was
01:04:23a fit
01:04:23type
01:04:23of
01:04:24sin
01:04:24at first
01:04:25so trivial
01:04:26in its
01:04:26indication
01:04:27but gradually
01:04:28usurping
01:04:29all the
01:04:29nature
01:04:30and thoroughly
01:04:31corrupting
01:04:31it
01:04:32and the
01:04:33terrible
01:04:33fact
01:04:34that the
01:04:35children
01:04:35of its
01:04:35victims
01:04:36were also
01:04:37doomed
01:04:37reminded
01:04:38the
01:04:39Israelites
01:04:39of the
01:04:40transmission
01:04:40of the
01:04:41sin
01:04:42of
01:04:42Adam
01:04:47the
01:04:48story
01:04:48of
01:04:49Naaman
01:04:49and
01:04:49Gehazi
01:04:50make it
01:04:51quite
01:04:52certain
01:04:53that the
01:04:53leprosy
01:04:54of scripture
01:04:54was not
01:04:55contagious
01:04:56for they
01:04:57were intimate
01:04:57with kings
01:04:58but apparently
01:05:00to complete
01:05:01the type
01:05:02the law
01:05:02gave to it
01:05:03the artificial
01:05:04contagion
01:05:05of ceremonial
01:05:06uncleanness
01:05:07and banished
01:05:09the unhappy
01:05:09sufferer
01:05:10from the
01:05:10dwellings
01:05:11of men
01:05:12and so
01:05:13he came
01:05:13to be
01:05:14regarded
01:05:14as under
01:05:15an especial
01:05:15ban
01:05:16and the
01:05:17prophecy
01:05:17which
01:05:18announced
01:05:18that the
01:05:19illustrious
01:05:20man of
01:05:21sorrows
01:05:21would be
01:05:22esteemed
01:05:23stricken
01:05:23of God
01:05:24was taken
01:05:25to mean
01:05:26that he
01:05:26should be
01:05:27a leper
01:05:28this
01:05:28banishment
01:05:29of the
01:05:30leper
01:05:30was indeed
01:05:31a remarkable
01:05:32exception
01:05:32to the
01:05:33humanity
01:05:34of the
01:05:34ancient
01:05:34law
01:05:36but when
01:05:37his distress
01:05:37became
01:05:38extreme
01:05:39and the
01:05:39plague
01:05:40was turned
01:05:40into
01:05:40white
01:05:41he was
01:05:42released
01:05:43from his
01:05:44uncleanness
01:05:45Leviticus
01:05:4613 17
01:05:49this
01:05:50may teach
01:05:50us that
01:05:51sin is to
01:05:51be dreaded
01:05:52most
01:05:52while it
01:05:53is yet
01:05:54hidden
01:05:54when it
01:05:56is fully
01:05:56developed
01:05:56it gives
01:05:57sufficient
01:05:58warning
01:05:58against
01:05:59itself
01:05:59and now
01:06:01such a
01:06:01sufferer
01:06:01appeals
01:06:02to
01:06:02Jesus
01:06:03this
01:06:04incident
01:06:05is one
01:06:05of the
01:06:06most
01:06:06pathetic
01:06:06in the
01:06:07gospel
01:06:07and its
01:06:08graphic
01:06:09details
01:06:09the
01:06:10shining
01:06:10character
01:06:11which it
01:06:11reveals
01:06:12make it
01:06:13perplexing
01:06:13to moderate
01:06:14and thoughtful
01:06:15sceptics
01:06:19those who
01:06:20believe that
01:06:21the charm
01:06:21of his
01:06:22presence
01:06:22was worth
01:06:23all the
01:06:24resources
01:06:24of medicine
01:06:25agree
01:06:26that Christ
01:06:27may even
01:06:28have cured
01:06:29leprosy
01:06:30and insist
01:06:31that this
01:06:31story as
01:06:32told by
01:06:32st mark
01:06:33must be
01:06:34genuine
01:06:36others
01:06:37suppose
01:06:37that the
01:06:38leper
01:06:38was already
01:06:39cured
01:06:39and Jesus
01:06:40urged him
01:06:41only to
01:06:42fulfil the
01:06:43requirements
01:06:43of the
01:06:44law
01:06:46why not
01:06:47deny the
01:06:48story
01:06:48boldly
01:06:49why linger
01:06:50so longingly
01:06:50over the
01:06:51details
01:06:51when
01:06:52credence
01:06:52is refused
01:06:53to what
01:06:54is plainly
01:06:54the mainspring

01:06:58of

01:07:01is plain
