00:23Let us pray.
00:40Let us pray.
01:08Let us pray.
01:24Declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation,
01:34I may fly with faith to you, my most holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself,
01:40grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone,
01:43and entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart.
01:55Satiate me wholly with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone,
02:01and that I may seek and find and hold you fast, possessing you forever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:12who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst,
02:20while you burnt with unspeakable desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour and the salvation of souls,
02:32and be ready cheerfully to spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul,
02:44that I may never attach myself to any creature,
02:48and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all,
02:55and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:28Thank you, O Christ.
03:30And may I use with moderation and thanksgiving
03:32whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart,
03:41that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing to you,
03:45and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:54you, the greatest lover of the human race,
03:57who when you were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close,
04:03brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar of the cross,
04:06for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works.
04:15Namely, to seek your honour with an upright and sincere heart,
04:20and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service,
04:27but a fervent spirit always be ever renewed within me,
04:32that I may daily more be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:38Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:41who willingly underwent death when commending yourself to your Father
04:46and bending your adorable head.
04:48You gave up the ghost, and thus, by laying down your life for your sheep,
04:54showed yourself to be the Good Shepherd.
05:00You are dead, only begotten Son of God,
05:02you are dead, my beloved one, that I may live for ever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood.
05:11I glorify you, I give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin and all evil desires,
05:20and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone,
05:25may my understanding exercise itself in nothing except you,
05:30that, clad in your grace and with holy charity,
05:33may I may soon after the close of this life come to you,
05:37the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death,
05:42grant to me the living pardon and grace,
05:45and to the faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:53at his death the sun withdrew its light,
05:57and the veil of the temple was divided in two.
06:01The earth quaked, and the rocks were cut,
06:04and the graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me,
06:10I beg you, you son of righteousness,
06:14you that are my God,
06:16may they always lighten
06:18even the very inmost recesses of my heart,
06:21that I may joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy,
06:28make the ground of my soul
06:29quake with saving penitence,
06:32rend in tomb
06:33this heart of stone of mine,
06:36that, being only renewed within,
06:38I may despise anything perishable,
06:41and love only the things
06:43that are of heaven.
06:44Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips,
06:52and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:01O be joyful in the Lord,
07:06holy land,
07:08serve the Lord with gladness,
07:12and come before his prayers
07:15and triggers on.
07:18He is sure that the Lord,
07:22he is God,
07:25is he that shall pay us
07:27and not be ourselves.
07:30We are his people,
07:33and the sheep of his pasture.
07:37O Lord, open your way
07:39to his case with fasting,
07:42and ensure that the Lord is God's grace.
07:48He can call up to him
07:52and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:57O Lord, the Lord is gracious,
08:00his mercy is everlasting,
08:07and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
08:19glory be to the Father,
08:24and to the Son,
08:27and to the Holy Ghost,
08:31as it was in the beginning,
08:35is now and ever shall be,
08:40world without end.
08:44O Lord, amen.
08:53O Lord, amen.
08:58O Lord, amen.

14:16them by that fruit. Not everyone
14:20who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the kingdom of heaven.
14:24Only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
14:28On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord,
14:32didn't we prophesy in your name and in your name cast out demons performing
14:35many powerful deeds? Then I will declare
14:40to them, I never knew you. Get away from me,
14:43you lawbreakers. Everyone
14:48who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man
14:52who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the flood
14:56came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse
15:00because it had been founded on rock.
15:04Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them
15:08is like a foolish man who built his house on sun.
15:12The rain came, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house
15:17and it collapsed. It was utterly destroyed.
15:23When Jesus finished saying these things,
15:26the crowds were amazed by his teaching
15:28because he taught them like one who had authority,
15:31not like their experts in the law.
15:35This is the word of the Lord.
15:38Thanks be to God.
15:45This passage opens with one of the greatest promises of the Gospel.
15:49For it gives us the reassurance of our Father's eternal love for each and every one of us.
15:55For those of us who are parents, perhaps there is a familiarity of edges.
16:00However much our children may annoy us, disappoint us, and generally disobey us,
16:06we still love them and still want the best form.
16:10In the same way, our Father, who is saddened by our disobedience and generally sinful behaviour,
16:17loves us and generally wants the best form of us.
16:23The promise is that God will not withhold from us the things that we need
16:27and that will be good for us.
16:30If we need bread, then we will be given bread, we are told.
16:34However, be under no illusion,
16:36for God will not give us things that are not good for us,
16:40things that could do us harm, perhaps,
16:42and neither will he be in any rush to give us the things that we want
16:46but do not need.
16:49Yes, I am sure there is a page very long of things that we want
16:55but how many of these things do we actually need?
17:00We are taught that we must first ask
17:03in earnest prayer, constantly and in faith.
17:08Prayer should be a habit,
17:10something we do automatically without thinking
17:12in the same way that we rarely stop to think about whether or not to breathe.
17:18Then we should seek,
17:20we must search for the doorway to heaven
17:22in the same way, perhaps,
17:24that a blind man must ask for directions.
17:28We must read the Bible daily
17:30and having read, meditate on what we have read
17:33and the passage we have read
17:35can apply to our life today.
17:38And having found the door,
17:40we must knock.
17:42We must present ourselves humbly before God
17:45and accept his grace and mercy.
17:51Then we come to verse 12,
17:53a truly wonderful verse
17:55as it summarises so much of the New Testament teaching.
18:00Treat others the way that you had wished to be treated yourself.
18:04If you give kindness and charity to others,
18:07there is a good chance that you will receive it back.
18:10If others treat you with disdain and contempt,
18:14do not be surprised if you have few friends in life.
18:18Remember also the words of Jesus,
18:20when we are kind to a stranger,
18:23we are kind to him.
18:25But when we ignore a stranger in need,
18:28we ignore Jesus.
18:32Some years ago I was living in a mountainous country
18:35which was, to put it mildly, remote,
18:37and was served by one narrow, winding
18:40and at times very steep road.
18:45Being the only road in and out of the region,
18:47it was continuously busy with lorries
18:50and it was impossible to pass any of them
18:53except in one or two places.
18:58Imagine then the excitement
18:59when it was announced
19:01that a new multi-lane highway would be built
19:03at great expense,
19:05blasting holes
19:07and establishing huge viaducts
19:09through the mountains.
19:13Several years later
19:15I was driving along this same old road
19:17wondering why nothing had changed
19:19because from time to time
19:21there were views of the wonderful new road
19:24glistening in its newness
19:25but empty.
19:28Then, rounding a mountain top,
19:30I saw a sight
19:31which remains vivid in my mind to this day.
19:34A massive bridge over a ravine
19:37but without its central span.
19:41Many had been tempted to try this new road
19:44weaving around the barriers and bollards
19:47and the interchanges
19:49but it was a road to nowhere
19:51except death.
19:55Life is a little like this example.
19:58It is easy to take the highway
20:00for it is the path of least resistance.
20:03It is the way of the world.
20:05It promises many things
20:07such as wealth, happiness,
20:10friends
20:12but goes nowhere.
20:15Around the blind corner
20:16there is oblivion.
20:18There is no warning
20:19at the last moment
20:20just emptiness.
20:23On the other hand
20:25there is the old winding track
20:27up the mountain.
20:28There is nothing appealing
20:30about it at all
20:31for it is hard
20:33cruel and lonely.
20:35The only promise
20:37is that it is certain
20:38and you won't get home.
20:43Dear friends
20:44we often find ourselves
20:45standing at this junction.
20:47The cars and buses
20:49and lorries
20:49scream past at high speed.
20:52But Jesus calls upon us
20:54to put on our boots
20:55pick up our rucksack
20:56and head up that mountain
20:58on this unpromising
20:59little goat truck.
21:02The good news
21:03for those of us
21:04who head this way though
21:05is that we have a guide
21:07the Holy Spirit
21:08who will help us
21:09keep to the true path
21:10until we are safely home.
21:15Jesus had a practical
21:17and very important warning
21:18to give his disciples
21:19and by extension
21:20also to us
21:21concerning the false prophets
21:24who were to come.
21:27Just as in the past
21:29there had been false prophets
21:32Zedekiah in 1 Kings 22
21:33for example.
21:35Others were
21:36and are coming
21:37pretending to have
21:38divine inspiration
21:39and teaching
21:40and we are told
21:41to be on our guard
21:43against them.
21:45The big question
21:46of course
21:46is how do you tell
21:47a false prophet
21:48from the real thing?
21:52Jesus was quite clear.
21:54You have to make
21:55a judgment
21:56based on the fruit
21:58of that person.
21:59the life
22:00of the person.
22:02Is this person
22:03a force for good
22:04within the church
22:04or does he sow
22:06the seeds
22:06of discord
22:07and destruction?
22:10We are given
22:11a little guidance
22:12of this point
22:12in 1 John 4.1
22:14as well
22:17for the apostle
22:18instructs us
22:19to put all prophets
22:20to the test.
22:23In practical terms
22:24we can determine
22:25this test
22:26in two parts.
22:28First of all
22:29does the prophet
22:29teach the whole gospel
22:30or just parts of it?
22:33Is everything
22:34that he says
22:35consistent
22:35and backed up
22:36by what we can
22:37all freely read
22:38of the teachings
22:39of Jesus?
22:40If an obscure
22:42verse or two
22:43from biblical prophets
22:44seems to play
22:45a dominant role
22:46in this teaching
22:47be very wary
22:49indeed
22:51for everything
22:52a Christian
22:53needs to know
22:53is contained
22:55in the gospel.
22:58Secondly
22:59if specific prophecies
23:00are being made
23:01again
23:02we should be wary.
23:04In particular
23:05we should ignore
23:06prophecies made
23:07by people
23:07claiming to tell us
23:09when Christ
23:10is coming again.
23:11For Christ himself
23:12made some very clear
23:14statements on this point
23:15not least of which
23:17was the very plain
23:18statement
23:18that judgment
23:19will come
23:20when it is not
23:20expected
23:21Matthew 25.
23:23Indeed we read
23:24in Matthew 24
23:2536
23:26that even Christ
23:28himself
23:28does not know
23:29when this will be.
23:31On the other hand
23:32those who call us
23:34to repent
23:34because he is coming
23:36tell the truth
23:37for this cannot
23:38be denied
23:39and it is what
23:40we are called
23:40to be prepared
23:42for
23:42constantly.
23:45Many
23:46will make claims
23:47trying to make glory
23:48for themselves
23:49and spread heresies
23:50but the teachings
23:52of a true prophet
23:53will stand
23:53the test of time.
23:57Jesus
23:57also warned us
23:59against the so called
24:00going through the motions
24:01type of Christian.
24:03the one who goes
24:04to church
24:04on a Sunday
24:05not because of any
24:06deep rooted
24:07spiritual commitment
24:08but because they see it
24:10as a sort of
24:11social club.
24:13They would be
24:14outraged
24:14to be told
24:15that they had
24:15missed the point
24:16of his teaching
24:18or that they were
24:19indifferent to what
24:20it actually means
24:21to be a Christian.
24:23Sadly though
24:24there is a significant
24:26minority of these
24:27people to be found
24:28in every congregation
24:31they can perhaps
24:32best be described
24:33as 21st century
24:34Pharisees
24:35those who enjoy
24:37the trappings
24:38of the respect
24:39of their community
24:40and who make a show
24:41of the profession
24:42of their faith.
24:44However it is
24:45just that
24:47a show
24:48for inside
24:49their heart
24:50is empty
24:50without the love
24:52that needs
24:53to be there.
24:55Jesus asks
24:56so little
24:57of us
24:58just that
24:59we love him
25:00above all else
25:01and that we love
25:02our fellow man
25:02as ourselves.
25:05If we have
25:05a genuine love
25:06of Jesus
25:07then it should
25:08come naturally
25:08to us
25:09to want to
25:09obey his commands
25:10and that we should
25:11want to please him
25:12in the things
25:13that we do.
25:15Yes
25:15we will always
25:16have that
25:17predisposition
25:18to sinfulness
25:19but it can be
25:20worked on
25:20and when we slip
25:21he is there
25:23offering a hand
25:24to help us
25:24back on our feet.
25:27It really is
25:29a simple matter
25:29of what we want.
25:31What do we truly want?
25:33Do we want
25:34a simple
25:34uncomplicated life
25:36which has Jesus
25:37at the centre
25:38or do we prefer
25:39to live as the
25:40others do
25:41in our street
25:42looking for money
25:43and status?
25:46If we devote
25:47our lives
25:47to him
25:48being mindful
25:49of what he wants
25:50from us every day
25:51and confessing
25:52our shortcomings
25:53constantly
25:55searching each
25:56and every day
25:57to find ways
25:58to better please him
26:00then when the time
26:01comes for him
26:02to knock on his door
26:03it will be opened
26:04and we will be
26:06invited in.
26:12Let us pray.
26:15O Lord
26:16who never fails
26:17to help
26:17and govern
26:18those
26:19who you bring up
26:20in your steadfast
26:21fear and love
26:22keep us
26:24we beseech you
26:25under the protection
26:26of your good providence
26:28and make us
26:29have a perpetual
26:30fear and love
26:31of your holy name
26:33through Jesus Christ
26:35our Lord
26:36Amen
26:43May the Lord
26:44bless us
26:45and keep us
26:46from all evil
26:47bringing us
26:48to everlasting life
26:51Amen
26:52Amen
26:52Amen
26:52You
