00:12:55Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
00:13:02Blessed are those who are persecuted for their righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
00:13:11Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely
00:13:18on account of me.
00:13:21Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven.
00:13:25While they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.
00:13:34This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
00:13:46Let us start by considering what we learn here about the preaching of Jesus.
00:13:55First of all we read that he went about all Galilee, being unlike John the Baptist, or in the most
00:14:02part stationary.
00:14:04Jesus was in constant movement.
00:14:07The people came to John for baptism and instruction.
00:14:11But the Lord carried the gospel to the people.
00:14:16He is an example to those of us who would minister his word.
00:14:20An example of unwearying activity and care for every soul within the potential of his reach.
00:14:28He taught habitually in the synagogues.
00:14:31He was recognized very quickly as a rabbi and invited to address the people at their ordinary meetings in the
00:14:39synagogue.
00:14:42Synagogue worship was not prescribed in the Old Testament.
00:14:46It was an institution which sprang up probably at some point during the captivity and spread throughout the towns of
00:14:53Palestine after the return.
00:14:57Our Lord attended the synagogues.
00:15:00Our Lord attended the synagogues.
00:15:00He kept the feast of dedication.
00:15:03They were institutions of the Jewish church, not ordered in the scriptures, but not repugnant to the word of God.
00:15:12We Christians should observe the ordinances of the Christian church, so far as they are not repugnant to the word
00:15:20of God.
00:15:22He preached the gospel of the kingdom, the good news that the kingdom of heaven was at hand.
00:15:28The kingdom of which Daniel had prophesied, the kingdom which should never be destroyed.
00:15:34The kingdom prefigured by the stone cut out without hands, which became a mountain and filled the whole earth.
00:15:43He himself was the king, the four whom he had called, the few disciples who followed him.
00:15:50For the beginning of the kingdom, the kingdom which was destined to fill the whole earth.
00:15:58It was good news.
00:16:00Indeed, it was spoken of peace and purity and love and hope beyond the grave to a world wearied with
00:16:09war and lust and cruelty.
00:16:11A world which had lost what faith there once was in God, in goodness and in immortality.
00:16:22We read also of his miracles.
00:16:26He would do mighty works, but not to relieve his own hunger or to display his own power.
00:16:34He was ever ready to listen to the cries of pain and sorrow.
00:16:40He would do no miracle at the bidding of the tempter, as we read earlier in chapter 4, or to
00:16:47satisfy the curiosity of Herod.
00:16:50But now, amongst the scenes of suffering, he was prodigious of his miraculous energy.
00:16:57He teaches us by his divine example that the holy teaching and works of Christian love should go together.
00:17:05His followers must show loving care, not only for the soul, but also for the bodies of the sick and
00:17:12the suffering.
00:17:17It is vain to preach the gospel of love, unless we show the power of that gospel by works of
00:17:25love ourselves.
00:17:27He was moved with compassion for suffering humanity.
00:17:32His followers have built hospitals and ministered to the sick and the dying.
00:17:38Care for the sick is one of the marks by which the king recognizes the blessedness of the children of
00:17:45his father.
00:17:47He cared for them himself, and his true disciples do not hesitate to imitate him.
00:17:56And we read of the multitudes, the crowds that were following him.
00:18:01His fame, we read, spread from north to south throughout the Holy Land, and even beyond its air borders.
00:18:10They came from the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, from the half-heathen country people by the descendants of Alexander's soldiers.
00:18:19And from the holy city itself, the center of the influence of Pharisee and priest.
00:18:26His influence spread wider and wider, his holy teaching, his works of mercy, attracted crowds from every quarter.
00:18:35It seemed as if the whole world was going after him, as if all Palestine was on the point of
00:18:43submitting to his authority.
00:18:47It would not be so, of course, for sunshine would give place to darkness, favor to persecution.
00:18:56The disciples of the Lord must not trust in popular applause.
00:19:01They may have it sometime, for it does come, but it is fickle, uncertain, and not to be relied upon.
00:19:10We must look to do our duty, looking simply at the feet of our Lord, and not to human praise.
00:19:22And then, as we turn the page into chapter 5, we come to the Beatitudes.
00:19:31At first, we must consider the true meaning of blessedness.
00:19:40It is a deeper word, by far, than mere happiness.
00:19:44Short-sighted and unwise, we call men happy, when the world goes well with them,
00:19:49when they are cheerful, good-natured, loved by their relatives and friends.
00:19:57But we do not always call them blessed.
00:20:01Blessedness, for which we have an instinctive feeling, implies something more heavenly, a deeper, holier joy.
00:20:10Blessedness, unlike happiness, is inward and abiding.
00:20:14Outward prosperity cannot give it, and nor can adversity ever take it away.
00:20:20It is like the depths of the ocean.
00:20:24The surface changes, sometimes calm and sometimes waveless,
00:20:29sometimes tossed hither and thither by restless wind.
00:20:32But far and deep below, there is the same changeless rest, silence and peace,
00:20:39unbroken, calm and eternal.
00:20:44This deep meaning was felt by the heathen writers.
00:20:51The New Testament has rescued the word from this mistaken application,
00:20:57and filled it with a higher and more holy meaning.
00:21:01The world is wrong.
00:21:03Good fortune is not blessedness.
00:21:06Blessedness is the gift of God.
00:21:09And what he gives can never be taken away by the chances and changes of our mortal life.
00:21:17Blessedness is not some outward ornament of life.
00:21:21It is a man's own, for God has given it.
00:21:24It is in the heart, wrought into the inner being.
00:21:27It is holy, spiritual, and heavenly.
00:21:31It is the character, the privilege of the children of the kingdom,
00:21:35for they must bear the image of their king.
00:21:40As is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
00:21:47He first exhibited the heavenly life upon earth.
00:21:51It had never been seen there before.
00:21:54The conception of that life is absolutely original.
00:22:00It had never entered into the thoughts of the ancient poets or sages.
00:22:04It is different altogether from the portrait of virtue drawn by the old heathen philosophers.
00:22:12The Lord Jesus Christ is at once example and teacher.
00:22:17His life is the blessed life.
00:22:20And he bids us learn of him.
00:22:23There and only there are we going to find the rest for our souls.
00:22:30This blessedness which is learnt from Christ dies not.
00:22:34It is the beginning of the blessedness of heaven.
00:22:38We must be blessed here to be blessed there.
00:22:41We must have the beatitudes of the sermon first.
00:22:45Then we shall have the beatitudes of the holy dead which die in the Lord.
00:22:53The poor in spirit are blessed.
00:22:57Not necessarily or always the poor in worldly means.
00:23:02Nor again the poor in the endowment of the soul.
00:23:06In intellect, strength of will, elevation of character.
00:23:13This was the scoff of the Emperor Julian the Apostle.
00:23:18But, blessed be God, not only many men of rank and wealth,
00:23:23but also many of great natural gifts and highly cultivated minds,
00:23:28have learned of the Lord Jesus this first beatitude.
00:23:33With man this is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible.
00:23:42The seat of this evangelical poverty is the spirit.
00:23:46The spirit, when distinguished from the soul in the sacred writing,
00:23:51is that highest part of man's immaterial being,
00:23:55which was breathed into his nostrils by God himself,
00:23:59which enabled him, alone of all the animals created,
00:24:03to feel God, to form more or less imperfectly
00:24:07an idea or concept of God,
00:24:10which is receptive of the Holy Spirit,
00:24:13and can, when illuminated by his gracious presence,
00:24:17abide in communion with God.
00:24:21The spirit of the true Christian
00:24:23is brought into an intimate relation with God.
00:24:28Such a one feels his own littleness,
00:24:32his own softness,
00:24:33his own sinfulness,
00:24:34in the presence of the Almighty, the Most Holy.
00:24:39Led by the Spirit of God,
00:24:41he is brought near to Christ,
00:24:43and learns the grace of loneliness
00:24:44from him who,
00:24:47being in the form and substance of God himself,
00:24:50made himself of no reputation,
00:24:53humbled himself totally,
00:24:56and became obedient even unto death.
00:25:01Poverty of spirit comes first
00:25:03in the description of his blessed life.
00:25:06Loneliness is the beginning of holiness.
00:25:10We may make no real progress
00:25:12in a spiritual life without it.
00:25:16Christ was lonely in heart.
00:25:20He raised that word,
00:25:22which the word world regarded
00:25:24as equivalent to mean or abject,
00:25:28to be the name of a high Christian grace.
00:25:31Those who would be near to him,
00:25:34great in the kingdom of heaven,
00:25:35must be like their king,
00:25:37unaffectedly humble.
00:25:39They must lay aside earthly ambition.
00:25:42They must be willing to take the lowest place.
00:25:45They must learn the most difficult lesson.
00:25:48In lowliness of mind,
00:25:51let each esteem others better than themselves.
00:25:56For this is the fixed,
00:25:58immutable law of the kingdom of heaven.
00:26:01Whoever exalts himself shall be abased,
00:26:04and he that humbles himself
00:26:06shall be exalted.
00:26:14Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
00:26:16The kingdom of grace is theirs now,
00:26:19and in their heart,
00:26:21in their lowliness,
00:26:22they have by God's grace
00:26:24put themselves from the throne of their heart,
00:26:26and Christ reigns there alone.
00:26:30They submit themselves to him
00:26:32in deep humility and reverence.
00:26:35The heart that is emptied of self
00:26:37is filled with Christ.
00:26:39The kingdom of glory is theirs by hope,
00:26:42by the sure and certain promise of God.
00:26:46They are sealed with that holy spirit of promise,
00:26:49which is the earnest of the heavenly inheritance.
00:26:54The kingdom of heaven is theirs,
00:26:57for the law of that kingdom is written in their hearts,
00:27:01making them as citizens of the heavenly country,
00:27:04loyal subjects of the heavenly king.
00:27:11Blessed are they that mourn.
00:27:15This seems but a paradox.
00:27:19Sorrow and joy are surely contrary to one another.
00:27:23But here the Lord says
00:27:24that there is a sorrow which is blessed.
00:27:28Life is indeed truly full of sorrow.
00:27:31There is more sorrow by far in the world than joy,
00:27:35more pain than pleasure.
00:27:38Outward sorrows are blessed
00:27:40if they are meekly borne,
00:27:42in patience and in trustful faith.
00:27:46When the sorrow is recognised as chastisement,
00:27:49it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
00:27:52When the pain is taken as a cross,
00:27:55it lifts the suffering Christian nearer to him
00:27:57who died upon the cross,
00:28:00who gives peace.
00:28:04But the connection here seems also to imply
00:28:07that the mourning of the text is a spiritual mourning.
00:28:12The poverty of the first beatitude
00:28:14is in the spirit.
00:28:16So should the mourning of the second.
00:28:21Poverty in spirit leads to mourning,
00:28:23mourning for past sins and unworthiness,
00:28:26mourning for the slowness of up spiritual progress.
00:28:31He who is poor in spirit
00:28:32is in the kingdom of God and near to the king.
00:28:36He looks upon the one that he has pierced
00:28:39and mourns for him.
00:28:42He must mourn.
00:28:44In sympathy with the saviour's suffering,
00:28:47in sorrow for his own unworthiness
00:28:49of the saviour's love,
00:28:51for his many sins against that great love,
00:28:55for his lack of gratitude
00:28:57and for the coldness of his heart.
00:29:01The world runs heedlessly after pleasure and amusement.
00:29:08But the Lord says,
00:29:10Blessed are they that mourn.
00:29:14He himself was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
00:29:19Is it nothing to you, he seems to say to us,
00:29:23or you who pass me by,
00:29:25is there any sorrow like my sorrow?
00:29:30Then we Christians who live under the shadow of the cross must learn the blessedness of this mourning.
00:29:39Godly sorrow creates repentance and salvation which is not to be repented of.
00:29:48Blessed are those who mourn with that godly sorrow.
00:29:50It creates repentance,
00:29:53that deep and holy change of heart,
00:29:56that change out of the image of the earthly
00:29:59into the image of the heavenly,
00:30:02which shall not be repented of,
00:30:05which none by whose God's grace
00:30:08have passed through it
00:30:10can ever begin to regret,
00:30:13though it was wrought much
00:30:15in sorrow and mourning.
00:30:18For it is our salvation,
00:30:21a present salvation,
00:30:23salvation from sin today and in the future,
00:30:27everlasting life with God our Father in heaven.
00:30:35They shall be comforted.
00:30:39They, this word is emphatic,
00:30:42that comfort is not for all.
00:30:44It is for those who have more.
00:30:49God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
00:30:54But first they must have wept.
00:30:56They must have been in tears.
00:31:01Their mourning is spiritual and so is the comfort.
00:31:07Christ himself gives comfort.
00:31:09He is Christ the comforter.
00:31:12He was sent to comfort all who mourn.
00:31:17He was the consolation of Israel,
00:31:19for which the holy Simeon waited.
00:31:23Come to me, he said,
00:31:25all you who labor and are heavily laden,
00:31:28and I will give you rest.
00:31:32But there is another comforter,
00:31:34whom the Lord will send from the Father
00:31:36to abide forever with his people,
00:31:39God the Holy Spirit.
00:31:42The first Christians walked in the comfort
00:31:45of the Holy Spirit.
00:31:47As we read in Acts 9.31
00:31:52We pray that we may evermore rejoice
00:31:55in the same holy comfort.
00:31:57He comforts the hearts of his chosen,
00:32:00for he strengthens them with all might
00:32:02in the inner man.
00:32:04He fills them with peace and joy in believing.
00:32:08The fruit of his divine indwelling
00:32:11is love, joy, and peace.
00:32:14They shall be comforted,
00:32:16who sorrow after a godly sort.
00:32:19And now, by the gracious influences
00:32:22of the Holy Spirit,
00:32:23hereafter by the unclouded vision
00:32:25of the true and absolute glory
00:32:28of God himself.
00:32:33Blessed are the meek, we read.
00:32:36But what is meekness?
00:32:40According to Aristotle,
00:32:42the virtue which consists
00:32:44in the due regulation
00:32:45of the natural passion of anger
00:32:47is without a name.
00:32:50For meekness does not lie
00:32:52in the meekness between
00:32:53two opposite vices.
00:32:56It taints rather toward the defect.
00:33:00The meek man is not given
00:33:02to retaliate for his injury,
00:33:03but rather to forgive.
00:33:05And it is a slavish thing, he says,
00:33:08for a man to take insults calmly.
00:33:11For such was the teaching
00:33:13of the Greek philosopher.
00:33:16The Lord Jesus tells us,
00:33:18blessed are the meek.
00:33:20His life, his teaching,
00:33:23changed forever
00:33:24the position of the gentle virtue.
00:33:27He was meek and lowly in heart.
00:33:31Christian meekness
00:33:32is a great price
00:33:34in the sight of God.
00:33:37We see what meekness is
00:33:39when we look at the life of Christ.
00:33:44It is first and foremost
00:33:45a willingness
00:33:46to take on wrong patiently.
00:33:50As we read in 1 Peter chapter 2
00:33:53verses 19 to 25.
00:33:57And secondly,
00:33:58meekness is a gentleness
00:33:59when we deal with others.
00:34:01A meek man
00:34:03will not think so much
00:34:04of himself,
00:34:05his claims,
00:34:06his position
00:34:06or his dignity.
00:34:09He will not allow
00:34:10his temper
00:34:11to be ruffled
00:34:11by slights
00:34:12and provocation.
00:34:14He will not expect
00:34:15to be always treated
00:34:16with respect
00:34:17and reverence.
00:34:20He will do his duty
00:34:21in the place
00:34:22and setting
00:34:23that God
00:34:24has put him in.
00:34:25Gently,
00:34:27lovingly,
00:34:28seeking not
00:34:29an honour
00:34:29from fellow men,
00:34:31ambitious only
00:34:32to be well-pleasing
00:34:33unto his God.
00:34:36True meekness
00:34:37is a grace,
00:34:38one of the fruits
00:34:39of the Spirit.
00:34:40Natural meekness
00:34:42may be no better
00:34:43than timidity,
00:34:44shyness,
00:34:45or a weakness
00:34:46of character.
00:34:47It may,
00:34:48as Aristotle tells us,
00:34:50imply a want
00:34:51of sensibility,
00:34:52of quick perception.
00:34:55It may be dull,
00:34:56weak,
00:34:56or abject.
00:35:00But true meekness
00:35:01is a strong thing.
00:35:03It is found
00:35:04sometimes in men
00:35:05who are naturally
00:35:05the reverse of meek,
00:35:08like the Holy Apostle
00:35:09St. John,
00:35:11once the Son of Thunder.
00:35:15It comes from
00:35:16the workings
00:35:17of the Holy Spirit,
00:35:18which gives strength
00:35:19and energy
00:35:20to the character,
00:35:22while it disciplines it
00:35:24into gentleness
00:35:25and patience.
00:35:27Christian meekness
00:35:28may outwardly
00:35:29resemble its natural,
00:35:31false imitation.
00:35:33Inwardly,
00:35:34however,
00:35:34it is totally different.
00:35:37It implies
00:35:38strength of purpose,
00:35:40holy courage,
00:35:42and sustained
00:35:43perseverance
00:35:44in self-control.
00:35:46We see it
00:35:48perfected
00:35:49in the character
00:35:50of the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:35:53We see him
00:35:54in the most lofty
00:35:55strength,
00:35:56joined with the most
00:35:57tender of gentleness
00:35:58in dealing
00:35:59with penitent sinners,
00:36:01the most wonderful
00:36:02meekness in the midst
00:36:03of insult
00:36:04and outrage,
00:36:07meekness
00:36:08is hard
00:36:08to learn,
00:36:09but it is
00:36:10a most necessary
00:36:11lesson for us,
00:36:13for it was
00:36:14the characteristic
00:36:15of the Master,
00:36:16and he
00:36:17has declared
00:36:19it blessed.
00:36:22They shall
00:36:23inherit
00:36:23the earth.
00:36:26This,
00:36:27being a quotation
00:36:28from the 37th Psalm,
00:36:30sounds like
00:36:31something
00:36:32from the Old Testament.
00:36:35But the New Testament
00:36:36too presents
00:36:37here and there
00:36:37promises
00:36:38of the life
00:36:39that now is.
00:36:411 Timothy 4,
00:36:438
00:36:44The epistle
00:36:45to the Ephesians
00:36:46echoes
00:36:46the Old Testament
00:36:47promise
00:36:48to those
00:36:48who honour
00:36:49father and mother,
00:36:50and the Lord
00:36:50himself promises
00:36:51it one hundredfold
00:36:52more
00:36:53in this time
00:36:54to those
00:36:55who are ready
00:36:56to forsake
00:36:56the earthly things
00:36:57for his love.
00:37:00The meek
00:37:01shall inherit
00:37:01the earth.
00:37:02The quiet
00:37:03strength of
00:37:04Christian meekness
00:37:05will win its way
00:37:06where violence
00:37:07will always fail.
00:37:10Gentleness
00:37:10is a power
00:37:11in the world.
00:37:12It exerts
00:37:13a strange influence
00:37:14over rougher
00:37:15natures.
00:37:17It often
00:37:18comes to the front
00:37:18and gains
00:37:19a high place
00:37:20among men.
00:37:23And where
00:37:23this is not
00:37:24the case,
00:37:24it has a joy
00:37:25of its own,
00:37:26a deep
00:37:27inner peace
00:37:28and contentment,
00:37:29a holy
00:37:29restfulness
00:37:30which gives
00:37:31a sweetness
00:37:32to this present
00:37:33life on earth.
00:37:36Such are
00:37:37the tendencies
00:37:37of meekness,
00:37:38tendencies
00:37:39which have
00:37:40not always
00:37:40their false good,
00:37:41do not always
00:37:43realise their
00:37:43full blessedness
00:37:44amidst the selfishness,
00:37:46hardness
00:37:46and violence
00:37:47of this world.
00:37:49But we,
00:37:51according to
00:37:51his promise,
00:37:52look for new
00:37:53heaven
00:37:53and new earth,
00:37:55wherein
00:37:56we will find
00:37:57true righteousness
00:37:58living.
00:38:00There shall
00:38:01be meekness
00:38:02there and
00:38:03it will have
00:38:04its perfect work
00:38:05and win
00:38:06its perfect
00:38:07blessing.
00:38:11Blessed are
00:38:12they who
00:38:13hunger and
00:38:14thirst
00:38:14after righteousness.
00:38:17Here
00:38:18we find
00:38:19righteousness
00:38:20equivalent
00:38:21to holiness,
00:38:23personal
00:38:23a spiritual
00:38:25holiness,
00:38:26holiness of
00:38:27heart and
00:38:27life.
00:38:28It is the sum
00:38:29of all
00:38:30Christian
00:38:30graces.
00:38:32But we have
00:38:33no righteousness
00:38:34of our own.
00:38:36All of our
00:38:37righteousness
00:38:39is as a
00:38:40filthy rag.
00:38:42Christ is
00:38:43made unto us
00:38:44righteousness.
00:38:45This is his
00:38:46name whereby
00:38:47he shall be
00:38:48called the
00:38:48Lord of our
00:38:49righteousness.
00:38:51if only we
00:38:52are his
00:38:52grafted
00:38:53unto his
00:38:54true vine
00:38:54abiding in
00:38:55him now,
00:38:56then his
00:38:57righteousness
00:38:57is ours
00:38:58for he
00:38:59himself
00:38:59is ours.
00:39:01My beloved
00:39:02is mine
00:39:02and I
00:39:03am his.
00:39:05we must
00:39:06hunger and
00:39:07thirst after
00:39:08this
00:39:08righteousness.
00:39:10The desire
00:39:11of the
00:39:11Christian
00:39:12heart is
00:39:12righteousness,
00:39:13not simply
00:39:14happiness
00:39:15hereafter,
00:39:16but a
00:39:16righteousness
00:39:17and urgent
00:39:18righteousness
00:39:19now.
00:39:22All men
00:39:23long for
00:39:23happiness,
00:39:24both present
00:39:25and future.
00:39:27But the
00:39:27true Christian
00:39:28wishes for
00:39:28righteousness
00:39:29first,
00:39:30for we know
00:39:31that happiness
00:39:31will follow.
00:39:33And the
00:39:34work of
00:39:34righteousness
00:39:35shall be
00:39:35peace,
00:39:36and the
00:39:36effect of
00:39:37righteousness
00:39:37quietness
00:39:38and assurance
00:39:39for ever.
00:39:42It is
00:39:43righteousness
00:39:43that the
00:39:44Christian soul
00:39:45truly desires,
00:39:46and that
00:39:46desire must
00:39:47be like the
00:39:48hunger and
00:39:48thirst,
00:39:50not a faint
00:39:51hesitating
00:39:51wish,
00:39:52but a strong
00:39:53longing desire
00:39:54that can never
00:39:55be satisfied,
00:39:56until it
00:39:58has attained
00:39:58its object.
00:40:01hunger and
00:40:02thirst imply
00:40:03a void,
00:40:04a want,
00:40:05a lack.
00:40:07The desire
00:40:08of righteousness
00:40:09implies a
00:40:10sense of
00:40:11sin and
00:40:12weakness.
00:40:13We have a
00:40:14deep feeling
00:40:15of want
00:40:16in the soul,
00:40:17a craving,
00:40:18an aching
00:40:19void,
00:40:19a longing
00:40:20like that
00:40:20of David
00:40:21expressed in
00:40:22the 51st
00:40:23Psalm.
00:40:24Not the
00:40:25fear of
00:40:25punishment,
00:40:26but a
00:40:26longing for
00:40:27a clean
00:40:28heart.
00:40:29after that
00:40:30Holy Spirit
00:40:30of God.
00:40:32To hunger
00:40:33and thirst
00:40:34after righteousness
00:40:34is to hunger
00:40:36and thirst
00:40:36after Christ
00:40:37himself.
00:40:39He is
00:40:40our example
00:40:41here as
00:40:42always.
00:40:43His meat
00:40:44was to do
00:40:44the will
00:40:45of him
00:40:45who sent
00:40:46him,
00:40:46and to
00:40:47finish his
00:40:47work.
00:40:49He hungered
00:40:50for our
00:40:50souls,
00:40:51he thirsted
00:40:52for our
00:40:53salvation,
00:40:53and we
00:40:55must hunger
00:40:55and thirst
00:40:56after him
00:40:57who is
00:40:58the life
00:40:58of our
00:40:59soul,
00:40:59the true
00:41:00bread that
00:41:00came down
00:41:01from heaven,
00:41:01whose flesh
00:41:02is meat
00:41:02indeed,
00:41:03whose blood
00:41:04is drink
00:41:05indeed,
00:41:06who alone
00:41:07can fill
00:41:08our restless
00:41:09craving hearts.
00:41:11He that
00:41:11comes to me
00:41:12shall never
00:41:13hunger,
00:41:13and he
00:41:14that believes
00:41:15in me
00:41:16shall never
00:41:17thirst.
00:41:21for Christ
00:41:22desired us.
00:41:25He longs
00:41:26to give
00:41:27himself to
00:41:27us as
00:41:28he has
00:41:29given
00:41:29himself
00:41:30for us.
00:41:33Behold,
00:41:33he says,
00:41:34I stand
00:41:35at the
00:41:35door and
00:41:35knock.
00:41:36He asks
00:41:38only that
00:41:39we open
00:41:39and let
00:41:40him in,
00:41:41and he
00:41:42will enter
00:41:43in and have
00:41:43supper with
00:41:44us,
00:41:44and we
00:41:45with him.
00:41:47We may
00:41:48hunger and
00:41:48thirst after
00:41:49many things
00:41:50and never
00:41:50gain them.
00:41:51If we do
00:41:52gain them,
00:41:53they often
00:41:54become mere
00:41:54ash in
00:41:55our mouth,
00:41:56vanity and
00:41:57vexation of
00:41:58spirit.
00:41:59But they
00:42:00who hunger
00:42:01and thirst
00:42:01after righteousness,
00:42:03after Christ,
00:42:04cannot fail
00:42:06but to
00:42:07attain the
00:42:08object of
00:42:10that loving
00:42:10desire.
00:42:12For the
00:42:12word of
00:42:13Christ is
00:42:13pledged,
00:42:14they shall
00:42:15be filled.
00:42:17And he
00:42:18has all
00:42:19things who
00:42:19has Christ.
00:42:20He needs
00:42:21nothing more
00:42:22who has
00:42:23chosen the
00:42:24good part,
00:42:24the one
00:42:25thing necessary.
00:42:28As for
00:42:28me,
00:42:29I will
00:42:30see your
00:42:30face in
00:42:31righteousness.
00:42:32I shall
00:42:33be satisfied
00:42:33when I
00:42:34awake with
00:42:35your likeness.
00:42:42Blessed are
00:42:43the merciful.
00:42:46The Lord,
00:42:47as St.
00:42:47James tells
00:42:48us in
00:42:48chapter 5
00:42:49verse 11,
00:42:50is very
00:42:51pitiful and
00:42:52of tender
00:42:52mercy.
00:42:54It was
00:42:55pity,
00:42:55tender pity
00:42:56for humanity
00:42:57in its sin,
00:42:58its darkness,
00:42:59its misery,
00:43:00its hopelessness,
00:43:01which moved
00:43:03the eternal
00:43:03sun to take
00:43:04upon him
00:43:05our human
00:43:06nature.
00:43:08in that
00:43:09human nature,
00:43:10he has
00:43:10shown the
00:43:11self-sweet,
00:43:14self-forgetting
00:43:15tenderness of
00:43:16his divine
00:43:17compassion as
00:43:18he moved
00:43:18amongst the
00:43:19sick and
00:43:19suffering of
00:43:20Galilee.
00:43:21And those who
00:43:23claim to
00:43:23follow him must
00:43:24follow the
00:43:25example of
00:43:26their master.
00:43:27They must be
00:43:27pitiful.
00:43:29It is the
00:43:29principle, the
00:43:31inner affection
00:43:32of pity,
00:43:33which is
00:43:34commanded
00:43:35here, the
00:43:36pity which
00:43:37is blessed
00:43:37like the
00:43:38sacred pity
00:43:38of Christ.
00:43:39It is
00:43:40wide in its
00:43:41range,
00:43:42co-extensive
00:43:42with human
00:43:43sin and
00:43:44suffering.
00:43:45The Lord
00:43:46pitied not
00:43:46only the
00:43:47afflicted and
00:43:47the poor,
00:43:48but also the
00:43:49proud Pharisee,
00:43:51the cold-hearted
00:43:52Sadducee,
00:43:54that Jerusalem,
00:43:56self-satisfied
00:43:57and unbelieving,
00:43:58that would not
00:43:59seek shelter
00:44:00beneath the
00:44:01wings of
00:44:01his mercy.
00:44:04Human sin
00:44:06as well as
00:44:06human suffering
00:44:07moves the
00:44:08Christian heart
00:44:09with pity.
00:44:12Indignation
00:44:13against sin
00:44:14must always
00:44:15be mingled
00:44:16with pity
00:44:16for the
00:44:17sinner.
00:44:18The
00:44:19thoughtless
00:44:19sinner who
00:44:20lives in
00:44:20wealth and
00:44:21luxury is
00:44:22an object of
00:44:23Christian's
00:44:23pity, as
00:44:25well as
00:44:26the sick
00:44:26and the
00:44:27helpless
00:44:27poor.
00:44:29This holy
00:44:30pity lies
00:44:31deep in
00:44:31the heart.
00:44:32It is
00:44:33always
00:44:34expressed
00:44:35in prayer,
00:44:36in gentle
00:44:37words and
00:44:37look, and
00:44:39when it is
00:44:39possible, in
00:44:40acts of
00:44:41mercy.
00:44:44Mercy, in
00:44:45the well-known
00:44:45words of our
00:44:46great poet, is
00:44:47twice blessed.
00:44:49It blesses him
00:44:50that gives and
00:44:51him that takes.
00:44:53It is blessed
00:44:54in its own
00:44:54reflex action on
00:44:55the merciful soul,
00:44:57in the sweetness,
00:44:58the inner joy
00:44:59which the
00:45:00exercise of
00:45:01mercy brings to
00:45:01the heart.
00:45:05But our
00:45:06Lord states
00:45:06another ground
00:45:07of its
00:45:07blessedness.
00:45:08The merciful
00:45:09shall obtain
00:45:10mercy for
00:45:11themselves.
00:45:13We all
00:45:15need the
00:45:16mercy of
00:45:17our God.
00:45:19Where would
00:45:20the best of
00:45:21us be without
00:45:21his tender
00:45:22mercy?
00:45:24We look
00:45:25back on our
00:45:25past lives
00:45:26and we see a
00:45:27waste of
00:45:28sin,
00:45:29hardness and
00:45:29unloving
00:45:30ingratitude.
00:45:32But God
00:45:33had pity for
00:45:34us.
00:45:35God called
00:45:35us and we
00:45:37heard the
00:45:38voice of
00:45:38Jesus calling
00:45:39to us,
00:45:40come to
00:45:41me.
00:45:43And we
00:45:44came in
00:45:45awe, in
00:45:46repentance, in
00:45:47trembling hope
00:45:48and found rest
00:45:50for our
00:45:50souls.
00:45:52He had
00:45:53pity for
00:45:54us.
00:45:54We need
00:45:55that sacred
00:45:55pity still
00:45:56for our
00:45:57daily sins
00:45:58and our
00:45:58shortcomings.
00:45:59And oh, how
00:46:00we will need
00:46:01it in the
00:46:01hour of our
00:46:02death and
00:46:03in the day
00:46:03of judgment.
00:46:05It is
00:46:06pledged to
00:46:07the merciful
00:46:07that they
00:46:08shall obtain
00:46:09merciful.
00:46:10Again, the
00:46:11word they
00:46:11is emphatic.
00:46:13They shall
00:46:14be pitied.
00:46:18Then the
00:46:18sense of our
00:46:19own sin and
00:46:20weakness.
00:46:21Our own
00:46:22need of
00:46:22God's mercy
00:46:23and our
00:46:24hope of that
00:46:25mercy at
00:46:26the last
00:46:26will quicken
00:46:28in our
00:46:28hearts the
00:46:29holy feelings
00:46:30of pity
00:46:30and sympathy
00:46:31which every
00:46:32form of
00:46:33distress and
00:46:34misery and
00:46:35lead us to
00:46:36delight in
00:46:38deeds of
00:46:38mercy.
00:46:42Blessed are
00:46:43the pure in
00:46:43heart.
00:46:45The
00:46:46Pharisees
00:46:46thought much
00:46:48of legal
00:46:48purity,
00:46:49of the
00:46:51Levitical
00:46:52distinction
00:46:52between clean
00:46:53and unclean.
00:46:55The Lord
00:46:56Jesus, however,
00:46:57insists on the
00:46:58purity of
00:46:59heart.
00:46:59The pure
00:47:00heart is the
00:47:01clean heart,
00:47:02clean from
00:47:03every taint of
00:47:04everything that
00:47:05defiles.
00:47:06To eat with
00:47:08unwashed hands
00:47:08does not defile
00:47:10a man as the
00:47:11Pharisees thought,
00:47:12but evil
00:47:13thoughts,
00:47:14murders,
00:47:15adulteries,
00:47:15fornications,
00:47:16theft, false
00:47:17witnesses.
00:47:18Blasphemy.
00:47:19These are
00:47:21evil things,
00:47:22whether only
00:47:23conceived in
00:47:23thought or
00:47:24carried out
00:47:24in deed,
00:47:25these defile
00:47:26the man.
00:47:29The pure
00:47:30heart is
00:47:30clear,
00:47:31bright,
00:47:31transparently
00:47:32sincere.
00:47:33It does not
00:47:34seek to
00:47:35deceive,
00:47:35it has no
00:47:36hidden motive,
00:47:37no selfish
00:47:38aims underlying
00:47:38a fair and
00:47:40pure looking
00:47:40outside.
00:47:42Its aim
00:47:43is to be
00:47:44and not to
00:47:44seem.
00:47:46In particular,
00:47:48the pure
00:47:48heart is
00:47:49clean from
00:47:49these corrupting
00:47:50thoughts,
00:47:51those foul
00:47:52imaginations,
00:47:53those unholy
00:47:54deeds,
00:47:55which the
00:47:56name unclean
00:47:57impure seems
00:47:58especially to
00:47:59designate.
00:48:02This one
00:48:03kind of
00:48:04defilement
00:48:04gains such a
00:48:05terrible hold
00:48:06upon our
00:48:07imagination.
00:48:08It so
00:48:09entirely corrupts
00:48:10the whole
00:48:10heart and mind.
00:48:11It separates
00:48:12the soul from
00:48:13God so utterly
00:48:14with such
00:48:16fearful rapidity
00:48:17that it occurs
00:48:19first to our
00:48:19thoughts when
00:48:20we meditate on
00:48:21this beatitude.
00:48:23The pure
00:48:24heart is
00:48:25clean,
00:48:27for in some
00:48:27measure even
00:48:28here it sees
00:48:30God.
00:48:32The world
00:48:33will soon see
00:48:34me no more,
00:48:35the Lord said,
00:48:36but you will
00:48:37see me.
00:48:39It is that
00:48:40blessed vision,
00:48:41the vision of
00:48:41God, which
00:48:42keeps the heart
00:48:43of the Christian
00:48:44pure.
00:48:45For this
00:48:46purity is a
00:48:47Christian grace.
00:48:49It comes from
00:48:50the abiding
00:48:50presence of
00:48:51God the Holy
00:48:51Spirit, who
00:48:53purifies the
00:48:53heart in which
00:48:54he deigns to
00:48:55dwell.
00:48:56That presence
00:48:58cleanses,
00:48:59refines, and
00:49:00illuminates.
00:49:01It shines
00:49:02through the
00:49:02dark places
00:49:03of the heart.
00:49:04It shows us
00:49:05the plague spots,
00:49:06and through
00:49:07confession,
00:49:08contrition, and
00:49:09repentance, it
00:49:10cleanses them
00:49:10away.
00:49:12Then blessed
00:49:13are the pure
00:49:15and the
00:49:15purified, those
00:49:17who were once
00:49:17impure and
00:49:18unclean, but
00:49:19who, having
00:49:20confessed their
00:49:21sins, have
00:49:22found the
00:49:22truth of their
00:49:23most gracious
00:49:23promise, so
00:49:25full of sweetness
00:49:26to the
00:49:26penitent.
00:49:27He is faithful
00:49:28and just to
00:49:30forgive us our
00:49:30sins and to
00:49:31cleanse us from
00:49:32all unrighteousness.
00:49:35once they
00:49:36sat in
00:49:37darkness and
00:49:38the shadow
00:49:38of death, now
00:49:39they walk in
00:49:40the light, and
00:49:42if we walk in
00:49:42the blessed
00:49:43light of his
00:49:43presence, then
00:49:45the blood of
00:49:45Jesus Christ, his
00:49:46Son, will
00:49:47cleanse us from
00:49:48all sin.
00:49:51It is truly
00:49:52cleansing us
00:49:52daily, hourly,
00:49:54if we are
00:49:55living in the
00:49:56faith of the
00:49:56cross, in the
00:49:57faith of the
00:49:58Son of God, who
00:49:59loved me and
00:50:00gave himself
00:50:01born.
00:50:03How many
00:50:04souls, now
00:50:04at rest in
00:50:05the paradise of
00:50:06God, were
00:50:07once impure
00:50:09and unholy?
00:50:12But the
00:50:12constraining love
00:50:13of Christ drew
00:50:14them to himself,
00:50:15and they washed
00:50:16their robes, and
00:50:17made them white
00:50:17in the blood of
00:50:18the Lamb.
00:50:20There is a
00:50:21fountain opened
00:50:22for sin and
00:50:23for uncleanness.
00:50:24It is always
00:50:25open, and the
00:50:26impure, the
00:50:27self, the
00:50:28sin-defiled, come
00:50:29daily.
00:50:30Not all of
00:50:31them, alas, but
00:50:33the penitent and
00:50:34the sorrowing.
00:50:35They come, they
00:50:36wash, and are
00:50:37cleansed.
00:50:40And they see
00:50:41him now by
00:50:41faith.
00:50:43Purity of
00:50:44heart cleanses
00:50:45the mental
00:50:45vision.
00:50:46The pure in
00:50:47heart see
00:50:47mysteries of
00:50:48grace, mysteries
00:50:49of love and
00:50:50holiness from
00:50:51which are
00:50:52hidden from
00:50:54the eyes of
00:50:54the unclean.
00:50:57He shows
00:50:58himself to
00:50:58those who
00:50:59keep his
00:50:59word, but
00:51:01the promise
00:51:01opens out a
00:51:02more robust
00:51:03and more
00:51:03glorious vision.
00:51:05When he
00:51:05shall appear
00:51:06as we, shall
00:51:08be like him,
00:51:09for we shall
00:51:10see him as
00:51:11he is.
00:51:12And every
00:51:13man that has
00:51:13this hope in
00:51:14him purifies
00:51:15himself even
00:51:16as he is
00:51:17pure.
00:51:19They who
00:51:20hope to see
00:51:21him as he
00:51:21is, in his
00:51:22glory must
00:51:23purify
00:51:24themselves.
00:51:25They must
00:51:26take upon
00:51:26themselves our
00:51:28Saviour's
00:51:29spotless purity
00:51:29as their
00:51:31high example.
00:51:32The pure in
00:51:33heart shall
00:51:34see the
00:51:34king in
00:51:35his beauty,
00:51:36they and
00:51:37only they.
00:51:39He is of
00:51:40purer eyes
00:51:41than to
00:51:41behold evil.
00:51:44The impure
00:51:44cannot bear
00:51:45his all-seeing,
00:51:46heart-searching
00:51:48glance.
00:51:52Blessed are
00:51:53the peacemakers.
00:51:56God is the
00:51:57God of peace,
00:51:58the Messiah is
00:51:59the Prince of
00:52:00Peace.
00:52:01His birth was
00:52:02welcomed in
00:52:03the angels'
00:52:04hymn, Peace
00:52:05on Earth.
00:52:07He is the
00:52:08great peacemaker.
00:52:09He made
00:52:10peace through
00:52:11the blood of
00:52:12his cross.
00:52:13They that are
00:52:14his must follow
00:52:15his example.
00:52:17If they are
00:52:17truly his,
00:52:18they have his
00:52:19peace.
00:52:20It keeps
00:52:21their hearts,
00:52:21it rules
00:52:22there.
00:52:23Those who
00:52:24have peace
00:52:25themselves are
00:52:26the best
00:52:26peacemakers.
00:52:29It is not
00:52:30an easy thing
00:52:31to be a
00:52:32peacemaker.
00:52:34It requires
00:52:35tact,
00:52:36wisdom,
00:52:37courage and
00:52:37love.
00:52:40There is so
00:52:40much party
00:52:41spirit in
00:52:42various kinds
00:52:43of every town
00:52:44or village and
00:52:45so much
00:52:45ill will,
00:52:47so much
00:52:48envy,
00:52:48so much
00:52:49jealousy,
00:52:50so many
00:52:51little feuds
00:52:52dividing man
00:52:53from man
00:52:53that it is
00:52:55hard to win
00:52:55the blessing
00:52:56of this
00:52:56seventh
00:52:57beatitude.
00:52:59But it is
00:53:00an element
00:53:01in the truly
00:53:02Christian character
00:53:02and we would
00:53:04practice it
00:53:05if we would
00:53:06be Christian
00:53:07children of
00:53:08the kingdom.
00:53:10For peacemakers
00:53:11are happy in
00:53:11themselves.
00:53:13who is happy,
00:53:15the cross-grained,
00:53:16irritable,
00:53:17conceited,
00:53:17all ready to
00:53:18take offense,
00:53:19perhaps even
00:53:20loving to
00:53:21stir up
00:53:21strife?
00:53:23Or the
00:53:23gentle,
00:53:24kindly soul,
00:53:25the affectionate
00:53:26who love
00:53:27peace,
00:53:28who do all
00:53:29they can to
00:53:30make peace in
00:53:30their family,
00:53:31in their parish,
00:53:33amongst their
00:53:33neighbors and
00:53:34friends,
00:53:35and that for
00:53:35Christ's sake,
00:53:36out of love
00:53:38for Christ,
00:53:38in humble
00:53:40imitation of
00:53:41Christ's
00:53:41example.
00:53:43Blessed are
00:53:44the peacemakers,
00:53:46but especially
00:53:47blessed in this,
00:53:49that they shall
00:53:50be called the
00:53:50children of
00:53:51God.
00:53:52They shall be
00:53:53called his
00:53:54children because
00:53:55they imitate
00:53:56his only
00:53:56begotten Son,
00:53:58because they
00:53:58keep the first
00:53:59of all the
00:54:00commandments,
00:54:01and the second
00:54:01which is like
00:54:02it, because
00:54:03they bring forth
00:54:04the fruit of
00:54:05the Spirit,
00:54:06love,
00:54:07joy,
00:54:07and peace.
00:54:09Only those
00:54:10who are led
00:54:11by the Spirit
00:54:12are in the
00:54:12deepest and
00:54:13holiest sense
00:54:14the sons
00:54:15of God.
00:54:20Blessed are
00:54:21they who
00:54:22are persecuted
00:54:22for the sake
00:54:23of righteousness.
00:54:27Christ
00:54:27prophesied
00:54:28that his
00:54:29followers should
00:54:30suffer persecution.
00:54:32It came to
00:54:33pass, as he
00:54:34had said,
00:54:36we know
00:54:37how, since
00:54:37the days of
00:54:38Stephen the
00:54:38first martyr,
00:54:39valiant
00:54:40Christian men
00:54:41and noble
00:54:41women, too,
00:54:43have again
00:54:43and again
00:54:44endured, for
00:54:44Christ's sake,
00:54:46prison and
00:54:46torture, the
00:54:47sword, the
00:54:48fire, and the
00:54:49lion.
00:54:50They are
00:54:51blessed.
00:54:52They were
00:54:52persecuted for
00:54:53the sake of
00:54:54their righteousness.
00:54:55Theirs is the
00:54:56kingdom of
00:54:56heaven.
00:54:57The offence
00:54:58of the cross
00:54:59has not ceased.
00:55:00There is
00:55:01persecution still,
00:55:02and it exists
00:55:03still, in
00:55:04many households,
00:55:06schools, and
00:55:07villages.
00:55:09The cold
00:55:10looks, the
00:55:11misrepresentations,
00:55:12the nicknames, the
00:55:13taunts, the
00:55:14ill-treatment of
00:55:16relatives, fellow
00:55:17servants, school
00:55:18fellows, fellow
00:55:20workers, are hard
00:55:22to bear.
00:55:24Holiness is not
00:55:25everywhere popular.
00:55:27The worldly
00:55:28feel it as a
00:55:29rebuke to
00:55:30themselves.
00:55:30They resent
00:55:31it.
00:55:31They sometimes
00:55:32persecute.
00:55:34And these
00:55:35modern forms of
00:55:35persecution are
00:55:36greater in
00:55:37extent, for
00:55:38they spread over
00:55:39a longer period,
00:55:40and affect all
00:55:41the circumstances
00:55:42of our lives,
00:55:43and perhaps in
00:55:44some cases cause
00:55:45no less suffering
00:55:46than the acuter
00:55:48outbreak in the
00:55:49olden days of
00:55:50cruelty.
00:55:51Blessed are
00:55:52they that are
00:55:53persecuted for
00:55:54the sake of
00:55:55their righteousness,
00:55:56and because they
00:55:57belong to
00:55:58Christ.
00:56:01for my sake,
00:56:03the Lord says
00:56:03in verse 11,
00:56:05such should
00:56:06rejoice.
00:56:08It is a
00:56:09high privilege
00:56:10to be counted
00:56:11worthy, to
00:56:12suffer shame
00:56:13for his name,
00:56:14and great is
00:56:16their reward
00:56:16in heaven.
00:56:19The
00:56:19Beatitudes
00:56:20begin with
00:56:21the kingdom,
00:56:22and they end
00:56:24with the
00:56:24kingdom.
00:56:25they contain
00:56:26the law of
00:56:27the kingdom,
00:56:28they describe
00:56:28the character
00:56:29of its
00:56:30citizens.
00:56:31The children
00:56:32of the
00:56:32Beatitudes
00:56:33are the
00:56:34children of
00:56:35the kingdom.
00:56:37Only the
00:56:38poor in the
00:56:38spirit can
00:56:39enter into
00:56:40it, and
00:56:41its highest
00:56:42places are
00:56:42reserved for
00:56:44those who have
00:56:44patiently suffered
00:56:45for the sake
00:56:46of Christ,
00:56:47who have
00:56:48drunk of the
00:56:48cup that he
00:56:49drank of,
00:56:50and have been
00:56:51baptized with
00:56:52the baptism
00:56:53wherewith he
00:56:54himself was
00:56:56baptized.
00:57:03Christ.

00:57:17praise you,
00:57:19O God,

00:57:21truth to

01:01:32adversities through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen
