00:00Do people want cheap shots on Sunday?
00:02Yeah, I think they do.
00:02I don't think that's a good idea, bud.
00:04It shows you're focused on the wrong thing, and you probably cost us penalties.
00:08I don't like that.
00:09Yes, you are right, and you're talking like a coach.
00:11Keep the main thing the main thing.
00:13Trying to go 1-0 this Sunday.
00:15But Kenny...
00:16One play at a time.
00:17We defend every blade of grass.
00:19I do know fans would love it.
00:22Fans love that stuff, and they feel like Pittsburgh has...
00:25Kenny Carmen doesn't love that stuff.
00:27They think that Pittsburgh has got the best of us.
00:29Too much withdrawal, so guess what?
00:30I'm going to be talking coach speak here.
00:32They ended Nick Chubb.
00:33They think that Mason Rudolph said something to provoke Miles Garrett.
00:39Like, they want, given the history, the checkered past of many, many of the Steelers players
00:47over the years that have gone over the line, so to speak.
00:51I think they want the Browns to fight back.
00:53Just winning's not enough anymore.
00:54They want the Browns to fight back.
00:55Make it Fitzpatrick try to knock KC Concepcion back to the Stone Age.
00:58I mean, that was...
01:00I thought it was a launch.
01:02Thought that was cheap.
01:04But I don't need any extracurriculars.
01:06I bet if you asked fans, they'd say...
01:08No, no, no.
01:09You ran a poll.
01:10I know it.
01:10And you don't run the poll.
01:11But I know what fans would say.
01:13Yes, they want cheap shots.
01:15Yeah, you're going to look bad if you put a poll out there that says, if you want cheap
01:17shots.
01:18And this is one, I'm being serious, John.
01:20This is the one where I say, don't put the poll up.
01:22Wink, wink.
01:22Put the poll up.
01:23No, this one.
01:23Don't put the poll up.
01:24Don't put the poll up.
01:24There's no wink, wink.
01:25Don't do it, John.
01:26Okay, but when you do that...
01:27You just said it like that, and now you're going to have a problem.
01:29Guys, I was just agreeing with you.
01:32I know what you're doing.
01:33I don't want any cheap shots.
01:34Yeah.
01:34That's all I can.
01:36We're all three in agreeance, John.
01:37Definitely don't do it.
01:39If you want cheap shots, then again, it proves to me that you are not serious about this football
01:43team, and you're terrified of the Steelers.
01:45How do you like that?
01:46I agree with you.
01:46Because then you really don't think they're going to have a chance to win, and so you just want
01:50to get your pound of flesh.
01:51That's what you want.
01:52Some justice.
01:53Yeah.
01:54Main justice.
01:562-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
01:59Get out.
01:59Does your standard for the Browns change...
02:01We got Nathan Zagura joining us at 9.
02:03Does your standard for the Browns change if they win?
02:05I know we got a lot of people getting ready to go into work, so I wanted to ask this
02:09right
02:09before they get in.
02:11Does your standard...
02:12Like me, it did sound like some people are critical.
02:15Like, Ken, you just want to make the playoffs?
02:16I'm like, yeah, we're going to crawl before we walk.
02:19If you're 6-2, does the standard change?
02:23Yeah, it's not like we're putting a cap.
02:24Not the hope.
02:24I mean, what you're willing to accept.
02:26It's not like we're saying, the Browns can only do this.
02:29Like, no, it's the NFL.
02:31Some crazy things happen.
02:33Already, this is a crazy story, right?
02:34Yes.
02:35Not just that you've won the games that you've won.
02:38Not just that you've done it in the fourth quarters.
02:40Instead, it's Deshaun Watson, who we all thought, most thought, would be out of a job by week three.
02:45So, the standard...
02:47Yeah, Kenny, I got to say, like, if they win in Pittsburgh this weekend in a game, you can hear
02:52it.
02:52You can hear it in my voice.
02:53Like, I'm not exactly expecting an award-winning performance on the road.
02:58Not because I don't believe in the Browns.
02:59It's just because that's what happens in the NFL.
03:02Teams like the Browns aren't normally capable of winning six or seven games and going on the road
03:06against a team that's probably, I'd say, in the neighborhood of you are, talent-wise.
03:11I said you have the young, talented players.
03:13They got the older, talented players.
03:15I did hear their midday show said that their talent, their young talent, there was...
03:19I think their producer said that our young talent was better than their young talent.
03:22But they were all in disagreement.
03:24I go, I don't know how you think that your young talent's better than our young guys.
03:27Like, I'm not going to compare anybody with Cam Hayward.
03:29He's a fabulous player.
03:31Yeah, he's awesome.
03:31Yeah, maybe Denzel Ward would be a Hall of Famer if we were a little bit better.
03:34But again, why are they so good?
03:36Because of their veteran...
03:37Why have they been so good?
03:38Because of their veteran players.
03:39T.J. Watt, Highsmith, several other guys in the past for the Pittsburgh Steelers have
03:44been in a different level.
03:45But if you win this game...
03:46When I look at the young guys that they have...
03:47Yes, go ahead.
03:48If you win this game, Kenny, yeah, I'm going to be thinking about really winning the division.
03:54And I know people would say, why aren't you thinking about it now?
03:56Well, it's a jumbled mess.
03:57You've got four teams that have all demonstrated this year that they're capable of winning this
04:03division.
04:03And so this game is big in that regard.
04:07But, you know, like we've said the last few days, losing doesn't ruin the season or anything
04:12like that.
04:12But I will say winning will get me thinking bigger, loftier goals.
04:18Mike and Stowe, you're next up on the fan.
04:19Hello.
04:20Good morning, guys.
04:22So I was really fired up and the screener reminded me, I'm like, we got to get Minka back.
04:27I'm like, oh, that's right.
04:28He's not with them anymore.
04:29You know, I'm like, I'm so fired up about that.
04:31Look, I want to win the game, first and foremost.
04:34And you're right.
04:35You know, we can start thinking about division.
04:37If we can sweep them, that puts us in the upper hand with the head-to-heads, you know,
04:41with them.
04:41Now that gives us four, you know, three wins in the division out of, you know, three games.
04:45That's great.
04:46It's a great start.
04:47But I do want them to do some sort of payback.
04:51You know, I remember all the way back to, oh, God, the guy just reminded me of his name.
04:57Mike, I disagree.
04:58Can I tell you, I treat the Browns, I treat the Browns.
05:03I don't, this might get me in a little bit of trouble here.
05:05Thank you for the call.
05:05I treat the Browns like I do.
05:08What's the matter?
05:09Oh, it was beside himself over there.
05:12What did I do?
05:12Just move on.
05:13Let's go.
05:14What, are you talking about his car or what did I say?
05:16Okay.
05:17I'll say this.
05:18For the Browns' sake, I treat him like I would my son.
05:21You don't need to be going into school fighting.
05:24If someone takes a swing at you or somebody pushes you, if you feel you must be physical
05:32in this situation, then you be physical.
05:34Because I think there's so, I don't want the Browns to play outside of the rules and be
05:39a cheap shot team.
05:40Someone in the comments says.
05:42But if somebody takes a shot at you, yeah, I want somebody to stand up for their teammates.
05:45It's only a cheap shot if you get caught.
05:49Is Ric Flair listening to the show?
05:52I mean, it'd be awesome if he was.
05:54I'm just saying.
05:56I mean, what did they say about the dirtiest player of the game is listening to the show?
06:00Foreign objects?
06:00Come on.
06:01Coming up in five minutes, Nathan Zagura.
06:04Did we get shortchanged by the Rams in this trade?
06:07I want to ask Nathan about that and what's on the line for Sunday.
06:10What's really on the line?
06:12Maybe he himself is going to say we're not making too big of a deal.
06:15We're making too little of a deal about this game.
06:17Ken Carman, Anthony Lyman.
06:19Take us with you to work on that free Odyssey app.
06:20Remember, you're going to want to listen to us at work, but you're going to put those headphones in.
06:24Because coming in hot is at 945 on the fan.
06:29I promise.
06:30I come in here on Monday and they just play a tight game.
06:33They lose 19-17 or whatever.
06:35Yeah, I'll be disappointed.
06:36I'm not going to fly off the handle.
06:37Some fans will.
06:39And I think they will if they see they lose that football game.
06:42A tight football game.
06:43That means it hurts even worse.
06:44If Jared Verse ends up not having anything in the sacks category again, I'm willing to bet we're going to
06:52have some people who are pretty upset here, Tone.
06:54Yeah, I think there's almost more pressure on him than anybody else.
06:57The Browns have already beaten the Steelers.
06:59Sean Watson already has a win at home on national television.
07:04Yeah, and there was a whole debate about his resurgence and if this is a story of redemption.
07:12That's already been done.
07:13So it's like I don't feel like they need to beat them again.
07:16And in terms of like what this would mean for the rest of the year if they beat them, all
07:21right, yeah, we can have wild discussions if they win this game and they pull off the sweep.
07:26We'll have wild discussions about, you know, the rest of the year and what this means for this team.
07:31But, you know, on the flip side of if they lose, it's not like all their goals are out the
07:35window or anything like that.
07:372-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
07:39Let me go to the phones.
07:40Alan Berea, you're next up on The Fan.
07:42Are you thinking that Jared versus writing checks he must cash on Sunday?
07:48Absolutely not yet, no.
07:50All right.
07:51Tell me why, Al.
07:52Well, we're only, what, seven games in out of a 17-game season and Garrett's on the bench.
08:00He's hurt.
08:00If it was the other way around, Garrett had six or eight sacks by now, I would.
08:04And as you guys already know, Miles Garrett was notorious for having, like, just a kick-ass first half of
08:12the season.
08:13And he always fell off.
08:14So, you know, Jared Verstel has more than half the season to go yet to prove that he's worth his
08:21worth.
08:21Al, I agree with what you're saying, but I don't agree with the reasoning behind it.
08:26Like, I can't worry about Miles Garrett as much anymore because he's not on my football team.
08:30So, I can't make that as an argument for Jared Verstel.
08:33My argument for Jared Verstel is that we have a more well-rounded defense and I don't have to worry
08:39about a guy being a sack merchant
08:41or setting up a defense just to get a guy sacks.
08:44That was alleged, not by me, but that was alleged by players in the past.
08:48Did they be on Clowney and all that other crap before?
08:51But I got guys who have 11 sacks.
08:53Is that a byproduct of Jared Verstel?
08:56I actually think it might be.
08:58That's my defense to Jared Verstel.
09:00I agree.
09:01Yes.
09:02Good point.
09:02Very good point.
09:03That's the only thing I'm saying.
09:04Al, thank you very much for the call.
09:05Like, I agree with the spirit of what he's saying.
09:07I really do.
09:08Like, I don't think they're going to win or lose.
09:11I don't think they're going to lose because of Jared Verstel.
09:14But we're emotional beings.
09:15I'm an emotional person.
09:17I got mad at Baker Mayfield.
09:19I got mad at shaving your face.
09:21I got, because I was like, you're not paying attention to this.
09:23You're not taking it seriously.
09:24Did you guys watch any tape?
09:26Noah Fant just taking off down the sidelines.
09:29What the hell are we doing here?
09:31Like, I got mad about that.
09:33This, I trust they're going to take him seriously.
09:35And I trust that Jared Verstel is going to take it seriously.
09:38But I don't work with any Steelers fans here.
09:42People are going to go to work on Monday.
09:44They might work with Steeler fans.
09:46And if you're a Steeler fan and you win that game, first thing you're going to say is,
09:50well, Jared Verstel's popping off.
09:51No sacks.
09:52And we ended up beating you.
09:52So how are you like that?
09:53Like, that's going to start to permeate to a fan.
09:55Oh, I think Browns fans will say that.
09:57That too.
09:58I don't even know if Steelers fans know who Jared Verstel is.
10:01I got to be honest.
10:02Like, it's not like he's been an integral part of the fabric of this rivalry or anything.
10:06And I think there are a bunch of Browns fans who are going, hey, I thought you guys told
10:09us that Jared Verstel is a huge part of this trade and he has zero sacks.
10:13I still think he is.
10:16He has not been anywhere near the factor you thought he would be.
10:19Well, no, he's not.
10:20He's not been that type of factor.
10:22Like, would I be downplaying him if he had eight sacks right now?
10:26No, I wouldn't.
10:27But I do think that our defense, it's just proven to us that our defense, I think, is
10:31much better even without Myles Garrett.
10:33The players are better than we thought they were.
10:35Because it's like, man, Myles Garrett makes some guys look better.
10:38Myles Garrett might get some guys paid.
10:39It's like, no, these are some damn good football players on this defense here.
10:42And this makes me feel better about it.
10:44And you've got to think, like, you didn't, like, I thought highly Alex Wright, and they
10:47obviously do too.
10:48Alex Wright got hurt.
10:49You've had other guys contribute and step up.
10:51Isaiah McGuire and how you hold on to him might end up being a bit of a problem.
10:56He's had a fabulous season so far this year for the Browns.
10:59So there's a lot of things here that has proven to be better without 95.
11:04But with Jared Verstel, I can't worry about Myles.
11:07I've got to worry about Jared.
11:09And if Jared is saying things and fans don't take it the right way if they lose, well, then
11:13someone's going to have to pay the fiddler for it.
11:15And it ends up being him through the callers and through the fan base.
11:19You talk tough.
11:20You've got to back it up.
11:22He does have power over it.
11:26Let me get to Chuck and Paramah.
11:27You're next up on the fan.
11:28Hello, Chuck.
11:29Yo, what up, fellas?
11:30Thanks for taking my call.
11:31Glad to have you, Chuck.
11:32Go right on ahead.
11:33So, Verst, yeah, he do a lot of chirping.
11:36You know what I mean?
11:36But he's the leader we need.
11:37You know, he talks tough, and the team, they're backing it up.
11:40His attitude, I love it.
11:42True.
11:42But he's coming from a 3-4 defense.
11:44You know, if you guys know football, you should know that.
11:48Coming from a 3-4, standing up, going to a three-point stance.
11:53Totally different game.
11:54So, you know, he's got to get used to that.
11:56And hopefully he comes around and gets sacks.
11:58But, you know, his production is definitely not going to be the same.
12:01You know what I mean?
12:02I like where Chuck's head's at.
12:03I like this.
12:05He needs to develop some more moves.
12:07That's what he needs to do.
12:08All he has is the ball rush that he's good at.
12:09But he needs to develop some more moves, and he'll be all right.
12:12But, you know, I like it.
12:14I like having him instead of Garrett because he is a true leader.
12:17You know what I mean?
12:18So, we got a different identity, and I'm loving it.
12:20Let's go.
12:21We in week eight, and we winning.
12:22It's crazy.
12:23Something I learned.
12:24Chuck, thank you for the call.
12:25That was a nitty-gritty football call.
12:28One of the things I've learned, certainly over the last few years,
12:30is how important the feet are to the chop as a defensive end.
12:34And you want to do a chop move or a swim move,
12:36just how important your feet and your toes are to that move.
12:392-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92, or an edge rusher even.
12:42Jake in Oberlin.
12:43You're next up on the fan.
12:44Hello, Jake.
12:46Hey, good morning, guys.
12:47How you doing?
12:47Not too terrible, Jake.
12:49Go right on ahead.
12:51Hey, just wanted to jump in on the Jared Burst conversation.
12:55So, in my opinion, I think Jared Burst, while he's a great player,
12:58I think the Browns have been having success on defense because of the interior
13:02line and the linebackers.
13:05Not necessarily what Jared Burst is doing.
13:07Well, yes, he's a power rusher.
13:10I think he needs to get more speed and go around on the outside.
13:13They have been very good at it.
13:16Boy, that's another good call, Jake.
13:17Thank you for the call.
13:18They've been very good with agap pressure.
13:20Mason Graham started off the season great, and then Malik Collins obviously was good
13:23enough.
13:23His body will work.
13:24You don't just pay him over a couple of weeks, but Malik Collins' entire body of work
13:28and certainly over the last couple of weeks has contributed to his extension.
13:31That's why I'm surprised if Burst hasn't had more productivity because they have gotten
13:38that real production on the inside.
13:41At the beginning of the year, are you going to focus more on number eight, or are you going
13:44to focus more on the interior of the Browns defensive line?
13:47If you were an offensive coordinator, I bet you'd be willing to say you were more focused
13:50on number eight.
13:51Well, and that's why you could tell he's not Miles Garrett, right?
13:54Because Miles Garrett dealt with chips and double teams and triple teams his entire
13:58career.
13:58And he was a freak who could get around that.
14:00And he still would beat that.
14:02Jared Burst cannot do that right now.
14:03Yeah, that's why I'm very, very slow to go ripping on Miles.
14:09I do think that the losing got to him.
14:12I do think that he felt it was almost a manifest destiny to just go for stats and lose on
14:18this
14:18football team.
14:20But I didn't think he was a bad guy.
14:22And he's certainly a freak of a player.
14:24And I don't think because of his absence, we're all of a sudden better without him in
14:30that sense.
14:31But I do think that Jared Burst adds more as a younger player that I think we're going
14:36to need later on.
14:37I still don't worry about Jared Burst's future.
14:39But in the near future, when you say what you said yesterday and you don't win, there's
14:44going to be some people who are upset about that.
14:45I want to get to more of you guys, 216-474-0092.
14:48Speaking of Jared Burst, do you see what else happened in the NFL yesterday with Jeffrey
14:51Simmons?
14:51Oh, yeah.
14:52And there are people who want us to address this.
14:54I'm going to address this here in about 10 minutes.
14:56Before we go ripping Andrew Barry over this Jeffrey Simmons trade, you guys got to remember,
15:01timing is everything.
15:02Ken Carman, Anthony Lima.
15:04It's the number 10 in the morning on The Fan.
