00:00The fireworks capital of the world erupts. A factory explosion overnight that killed dozens of people and they are still
00:07searching for survivors today. I'm Kate Baldwin with John Berman and Sarah Seidner. This is CNN News Center. It is
00:13time to debate on CNN. Once again, seven candidates all vying to be the next governor of California taking the
00:22stage after a scandal that's left the field with no clear leader. What's at stake tonight? And a shootout on
00:29the National Mall involving the Secret Service blocks away from the White House. A young bystander is hit by the
00:34suspect. We have the very latest on that investigation and Dolly Parton speaking out after canceling her Las Vegas residency
00:42now, but she does say she is not done yet. Happening tonight, the top contenders in California's race for governor
00:49facing off at a CNN debate and it is crunch time. Mail-in ballots are now being delivered to voters
00:55ahead of the primary at the beginning of June and no question one big topic tonight as it
00:59is in this race is the cost of living. California is one of the most expensive states in the country
01:04to live in. Gas prices currently gas currently costs on average more than $6 a gallon in that state. And
01:12there's nearly that's nearly $2 more than the national average that we've been tracking, obviously on a day to day
01:18basis. So what is at stake tonight? Seen as Jeff Zelenin has a preview for us. He's joining us now.
01:24Talk to me about what's expected now that this whole thing has been rocked by scandal as well.
01:29And you can get into this now of the top two candidates, no matter regardless of party goes on to
01:36the general. And there's been a lot of talk of is there a possibility that it could just be two
01:40Republicans that end up making it through? What are you hearing about this? Look, mathematics, perhaps a couple of those
01:46candidates to try and break out of a very crowded field. The primary is less than one month away. Kate.
01:53Tonight can play critical for all of them. No matter you can definitely, you definitely lose your race from a
01:59debate stage as we have seen. We are standing by for an update from the Pentagon on the war with
02:06Iran. That should be starting very soon as there are also very real questions about how the ceasefire between the
02:12U.S. and Iran is holding and if it is, how much longer it can hang on. Shots fired anew
02:17yesterday. The two sides trading new attacks all over the Strait of Hormuz now, which has meant the roller coaster
02:24with the world's oil and gas markets continues.
02:27Oil prices have been, yep, downed, falling slightly this morning, but still have been above and are $100 a barrel.
02:37The U.S. began helping guide ships through the Strait just yesterday. Some reports of ships have making it. There
02:43have been some reports of some ships making it through, but shipping data still shows there is no major increase
02:50in traffic, which means what for the future of it all? Matt Egan's here with us now. Matt, what are
02:55you watching right now?
02:55Well, Kate, look, another day, another four-year high for gas prices, right? A gallon of regular now selling for
03:01$4.48. This is the highest level. Just since March 1st, Americans are spending $24 billion more on gasoline. Now,
03:12some of that is seasonal, right? People drive more as the weather warms up, but most of it is the
03:15fact that prices have just gone up so dramatically.
03:18Now, they fell a little bit, right? Down 2% on the day. I think there's some relief that the
03:23ceasefire overnight has appeared to hold up. There were some real concerns about whether or not that was going to
03:28happen, but look, $104 oil, I mean, that is not cheap. Before the war started, we're looking at $65 oil,
03:35so this is just dramatically more expensive. You can see the trend. These are oil price long lines at gas
03:41stations, and he said that these shock absorbers in the system, right, inventories, emergency stockpiles, they're shrinking, and he
03:48warned that eventually we could start to see physical shortages. So, look, the clock here is ticking to try to
03:55get the situation resolved. Absolutely is. That's for sure. Take a look at that number right now. It's good to
04:00see, Matt. Thank you so much, Sarah, and is underway in Washington after a man allegedly opened fire at Secret
04:05Service agents and wounded a child in the process. This happened yesterday. It was near the Washington Monument. The Secret
04:11Service says that the officers returned fire, wounded the suspect. He's now in custody and said to be in stable
04:17condition. Much more to
04:18do it, though. It's Brian Todd is the latest. It is a big day for the Midwest. It's primary day
04:24in both Indiana and Ohio and in Indiana. It's the first major test of the president's retro. The president back
04:32in December laid it out like this. Every one of these people should be primary coming for us. An explosion
04:38just rips through a fireworks factory, leaving dozens killed and a search for an urgent search still for survivors. We
04:46got the latest on this and
04:48a bears big adventure through one neighborhood causing chaos. How wildlife officials got him back to where he belongs. News
04:58this morning. It has been a serious question and quite frankly, up in the air since Iran and U.S.
05:03forces started exchanging fire multiple times yet again in the Strait of Hormuz and asked yesterday about the ceasefire. President
05:10Trump declined to say that the ceasefire remained in place. But now we just heard from the Defense Secretary of
05:18the United
05:18States on this. Joining us right now is former Congressman. So Hexas says the ceasefire is on. Lindsey Graham yesterday
05:27said Iran has absolutely violated the ceasefire and Trump should respond with a big, strong, painful and short attack. What
05:34what is going on here to come out of this having kind of humiliated Donald Trump? They're on track to
05:40do that right now. And so we'll have to see. And another thing and kind of everything's coming down to
05:46like the definition,
05:47a definition of terms, right? Like what is the definition of a violation of a ceasefire? What is the definition
05:54of instigating a war? And what is the definition of is the Strait of Hormuz open or not? Because two
06:02commercial ships have already transited through the Strait. As John pointed out, normally it's 100. But I guess take progress
06:09where one can take it. But he says that shows the lane is clear.
06:14They say they control the straight Iran. They do not. Again, down to definition of terms in a big, messy
06:22political. Why do you think the president? What do you think this says about the president's comfort, discomfort or concern
06:31about reengaging again within in terms of really starting to just open it up? Or as Lindsey Graham says, a
06:38short, painful, big attack.
06:40I mean, the only part. And they have really failed on the diplomatic front. We've we've isolated our allies. We've
06:46isolated ourselves in War Powers Act. And by the way, every president has violated the War Powers Act. But the
06:53War Powers Act clearly states definitely is trying to make a distinction. They're saying that what what's going on, this
06:58churn is now separate and distinct. That's why they read you. Yeah, you too. Congrats on the book. Thanks for
07:03coming. I appreciate it. Sir, a city known as the fireworks capital of the world just essentially won up in
07:09flames. The video
07:10is wild. You can see the thick plume of smoke rising from the fire wave from the blast shattered windows
07:15and nearby buildings, search and rescue operations. They are ongoing. Nearly 500 first responders have been mobilized for this rescue
07:24mission. They've even brought in robots to help look for some world's fireworks supply.
07:29And a wild black bear caused quite a stir after videos caught it roaming around a neighborhood in California. Not
07:39a teeny one. It doesn't look like either. Three schools in the area were put in lockdown after the bear
07:43made its way down from the national forest there. California wildlife officials were able to tranquilize the bear, load him
07:52into a trailer and release him back into the wild. As you can see, but not before
07:58who knows what he picked up all along the way. Don't we do the fat bear contest? Could he be
08:03a contender? I think. Look, that's a big boy. Norm. So pretty. I don't think the black bears either. Not
08:09Alaska. All right. Thank you, Kate. Ahead. The breaking news this morning and this hour, the ceasefire is still in
08:16effect. That is the word from the Pentagon today. And that is despite the fresh round of attacks by both
08:21the U.S. and Iran that we've seen in the straight of four moves. Defense Secretary Pete Hegsteth, he spoke
08:26moments ago at a briefing on the war. He was
08:28joined by Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Kane, also there to brief reporters. The chair, the Joint Chiefs Chairman said that
08:36since the ceasefire was announced, Iran has fired nine times at commercial vessels, seized two container ships and attacked U
08:43.S. forces more than 10 times. But the Pentagon says all of that still remains below the threshold in their
08:49view to restart major combat operations.
08:53The Defense Secretary also said the new U.S. push to help guide commercial vessels through the straight has proven
08:59successful. He points to two U.S. ships transiting the straight yesterday, 100 ships-ish per day, though, crossed the
09:07straight before this war began. Still, Secretary Hegsteth says this proves, in his words, the lane is clear. CNN's Elena
09:15Train is live at the White House for us this hour. Elena, what else do we hear and what does
09:20it mean for this war?
09:21Clarity here, though? Not sure. That's exactly the answer. We know many lawmakers were hoping to hear, Kate.
09:27Atlanta Train, great to see you. Thank you so much. Sarah?
09:31Jeff Seleney, really do appreciate it. Thank you so much, Kate. It is Election Day in America. Your favorite.
09:36I mean, unbiasedly, best primary day of the year, because Indiana's voting. Let's turn to this. Something that is not
09:45exciting, but very important.
09:46Scary. I mean, exciting in the good sense. This is very important, though. News regardless. There's news that's developing in
09:54this Hantavirus outbreak that's still unfolding at sea aboard this cruise ship.
09:58Health officials now say that they do suspect that some human-to-human transmission could have occurred. We have more
10:05details coming in on this ahead.
10:07Plus, there's also new reporting that the White House is now considering new government oversight over AI, even possibly vetting
10:15AI models before they're released to the public. We'll be right back.
10:21They're public released to allow for national security checks and checks for national security risks under this new deal. Last
10:29week, the Pentagon made a deal with eight big tech companies to use their artificial intelligence tools and its classified
10:36networks.
10:36This is after the Trump administration had blacklisted Anthropic over this very issue. The president also weighing in on concerns
10:43that AI could cost jobs just yesterday.
10:48The president's comments come as we see AI becoming a major and bigger and bigger part of everyday life, including
10:55in the workplace and the workforce.
10:57A new report just out today from Microsoft finds that the anxiety around AI at work is real, but at
11:03the same time, it's becoming more and more embedded.
11:06A growing number of workers are using AI in, quote-unquote, advanced, resourceful ways.
11:12Let's learn about how and what we've learned from this new report and what it means for all of us.
11:16Joining us right now is Jeff Spassion's biggest night, the Met Gala, the big show for big stars and big
11:24donors, always comes with a theme.
11:26This year, it was to talk about what a night. I love the cup.
11:31Your overall?
11:32I thought that the theme was really amazing. I mean, this is a moment for protest.
11:37And the people that they're talking about is Bezos.
11:40Lauren Sanchez was...
11:41Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos.
11:43And, you know, there was a lot this evening striking.
11:46What do you think?
11:48I think...
11:50I think she's very eager to move into the world of fashion and be accepted by these sort of gatekeepers,
11:57by Anna Wintour, by Vogue, by...
11:59This was the first met with Chloe Mal as editorial head of Vogue.
12:03And you...
12:03I really enjoyed your conversation with her ahead of time.
12:06What did she make of this whole...
12:08I think to see, you know, Lauren has been cultivating this relationship with Vogue, and Vogue's new editor, Chloe, has
12:14been a big part of sort of...
12:16All right, thank you for joining us.
