00:00Kamala Harris calls it the same old show.
00:03Donald Trump is leaning into it and what some are labeling Trump's new birtherism
00:08and what this means for how this race is taking shape.
00:12What's old is new again.
00:14Deja vu, a familiar refrain.
00:16However you want to characterize it, 2024 is quickly feeling a lot like 2016 and 2020.
00:22Axios labeling Donald Trump's comments that Kamala Harris just turned black as Trump's new birtherism.
00:31Here's how Kamala Harris is responding.
00:33So far, not really taking the bait.
00:36Here is the thing.
00:37It is hard to call it a one-off when in the hours after Trump went after Harris's race and
00:43identity,
00:43Trump then followed up with a social media post of her discussing her Indian heritage previously
00:48and calling her, as you can see here, a stone-cold phony.
00:52That according to Donald Trump.
00:53And then there is more.
00:54Then later at a rally, still hours later, what equates to essentially a billboard business,
01:00a business insider headline, own rally.
01:03You can be sure that there are more twists ahead with this Trump campaign attempt to define their opponent.
01:08Though there is no question, she is a black woman and will likely become the first black woman
01:12and first Indian American woman to top a major party's presidential ticket in a matter of days.
01:17Today, the DNC's virtual roll call begins, which will officially and formally make her the party's nominee.
01:23CNN's Priscilla Alvarez starting us off this hour.
01:26What is the latest that you're hearing on this, Priscilla?
01:31Well, the vice president's response yesterday gave us a glimpse of...
01:34Priscilla, talk to me about the DNC and what's going to happen today.
01:37This virtual roll call, it's set to begin.
01:40What are we going to see?
01:41What's going to happen?
01:43Well, they're getting one step closer to...
01:45And then the next announcement, the next thing to watch, of course, is when she will announce her running mate
01:50and on and on and on we go.
01:51It's great to see you, Priscilla.
01:52Thank you so much, Omar.
01:54Some of the breaking news overnight.
01:56Israel is now confirming that it's killed the head of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Day.
02:02For the IDF release, we're going to show you this video that shows the moment, that huge blast,
02:07the moment he was killed in a strike in Khan Yunus.
02:09This was back in mid-July.
02:10That strike also killed at least 90 Palestinians.
02:13This comes at the same time as memorial services are being held for the political leader of Hamas,
02:19who was killed in that strike in Tehran.
02:22The military and political leaders now of Hamas, both eliminated.
02:25CNN's Ivan Watson is in Beirut, Lebanon, with much more.
02:29Ivan, can you talk more about what's happening in Iran today,
02:32honoring memorial services for the political leader now assassinated,
02:37and what this now means for the region?
02:41Right.
02:42Well, he's been granted.
02:43Blinken instead is saying that, hey, the region is heading towards conflict, wider conflict,
02:49and now you need a ceasefire more than...
02:51Great reporting.
02:52Thank you so much for being there.
02:54Check back in.
02:55Coming up still for us, there are new details coming in about the plea deal for the accused
02:59mastermind behind the 9-11 terror attacks, a plea deal that keeps him in prison for life,
03:04but avoids a possible death sentence.
03:06How the families of 9-11 victims are reacting to all of this today.
03:10And any time now, Vice President Kamala Harris, she could be announcing and will be announcing
03:15her running May.
03:16There's new reporting at the very same time that not all Democrats are happy
03:19with the options that are so far discussed.
03:24What started out as an idea to earn some money to buy more Legos has turned into a serious business.
03:30Nine-year-old Kai Walker is what we're talking about, founded Kai Bears Popcorn last year.
03:36And here is where the idea came from.
03:38Listen, the goal is to teach other kids how to grow their own businesses.
03:43Omar?
03:44All right, so it sounds like I'm going to the University of Virginia.
03:46Talking about who is black when it comes to our lives and politics today.
03:51Let's focus on this now.
03:53Another big day is underway in Paris as Team USA goes for more gold in several events.
03:58Simone Biles will compete again today, this time in the gymnastics individual all-around final.
04:02She's hoping to add to her now eight Olympic medal count, five of them gold medals.
04:08Team USA's Katie Ledecky is also back in the pool today for the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
04:14She won her eighth swimming gold and her first gold of these games with a record-setting performance
04:19in the 1,500-meter freestyle yesterday.
04:22She won that race.
04:23You know, this is like milliseconds is how people win in the Olympics.
04:27She won that race incredibly with a lead of more than 10 seconds.
04:32Unreal.
04:33And with these games, you may start wondering, especially when it comes to Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky,
04:37how do these athletes do this?
04:39Are they just superhuman?
04:41The answer is yes.
04:42But then there's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, another superhuman, jumping into this,
04:45this kind of leaning into this question for another episode of your Chasing Life podcast.
04:52And it's one of those things, like, to compete at this level, and we're showing these amazing
04:58just images cycling through in the wall, you clearly have to be at peak physical condition.
05:04But there's a mental component to it as well, Sanjay.
05:06And this is what you're exploring.
05:09Yeah.
05:10First of all, I mean, Katie.
05:11And then what happens when this mental component slips?
05:16And what are the tricks?
05:17It's easy to say, compartmentalize, but how?
05:22World's biggest stage.
05:25Another line of work that I have seen is amazing at compartmentalization because of the high stress
05:31that they're in all the time.
05:32Surgeons, physicians, doctors, especially neurosurgeons.
05:36A genius, a mental giant you are.
05:38We do like to think about things, though.
05:40Oh, no.
05:41It's just autopilot when you have your hand in my brain.
05:44It's just autopilot.
05:45It's great to see you, Sanjay.
05:47Thank you so much.
05:48And a reminder, you're flying moment.
05:49As a toddler falls down a 12-foot hole in the family's yard, the lengths that officers
05:54went to try to rescue this little guy, he is okay, fortunately.
05:59And we have the video of the whole thing.
06:04As the Political Playbook put it this morning, so much for the new Trump.
06:08In the days after the attempt, he said he wanted to unify.
06:11But then came Donald Trump of yesterday, really removing any doubt that Donald Trump of 2024
06:17And it's clearly not a one-off.
06:19Trump doubled down on this on social media.
06:22And J.D. Vance backed him up on the personal attacks at his own rally yesterday.
06:26Lost.
06:27Yeah.
06:27But, but, but, but, but, but, but, but.
06:29You have said many times before, no one can get Donald Trump to do anything.
06:33Yeah.
06:33So.
06:34Yeah, unfortunately.
06:35In the conversation you had this weekend, you were asked,
06:37what would you say to those people who said Harris was a DEI hire?
06:40You were asked this just this weekend.
06:42You said that is not helpful at all, to say the least.
06:44That's exactly your point in this piece, like, in terms of the commentary on the campaign
06:49parallel, campaign trail, and what voters are going to end up hearing, no matter how
06:53often you talk about the issues, or a surrogate talks about the issues.
06:57If it looks a lot like 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, what does that mean for you guys?
07:04Yeah, if, if nothing changes, you're going to hand something over to Vice President Harris
07:09next year, but they're missing out.
07:10They're missing the opportunity.
07:11So get back to the issues and win this thing.
07:13On J.D. Vance, I want to play, it was, it was interesting yesterday when he, when Trump
07:20was at NABJ, and he was asked about the things J.D. Vance is saying, the childless cat, cat
07:27ladies, cat peoples.
07:29Is that polling yet?
07:30Is that up in a poll?
07:31Childless cat, is that a top issue for Americans?
07:33I haven't seen it yet, but, you know, obviously it's not going to make it.
07:37And maybe, but what it does, and what it does is it speaks to, it speaks to what, what is
07:43he saying in the past?
07:44What are his priorities and how, if they're going to personally attack Kamala Harris,
07:47they're going to get it back at them, right?
07:49Donald Trump has asked about J.D. Vance and his attacks on people.
07:52And I want to play what Donald Trump said in response, because I want you to help me to
07:56decipher, decipher it.
07:58First day of the convention, the only thing you got wrong was it wasn't Monday or Tuesday
08:02when Joe Biden stepped to, the so-called new Donald Trump after the attempted assassination,
08:07looking a lot like the old, throwing out false claims about Kamala Harris's heritage
08:12during a combative interview in front of a room full of black journalists.
08:16What impact could this have on the race for the White House today and much more tomorrow?
08:22Breaking overnight, Israel confirming the death of Hamas's military leader in an attack
08:27that happened last month.
08:29The IDF releasing video now of the moment that they say, right there, that the alleged
08:34mastermind of the October 7th terrorist attack was killed.
08:38And a warning for two generations, Gen X and millennials, have a higher risk of 17 types of cancer.
08:46Details from a new study that you'll want to hear.
08:49I'm Kate Baldwin with Omar Jimenez.
08:51Sarah is in Chicago.
08:52John Berman is out today.
08:54This is CNN News Central.
08:57Donald Trump taking us back to 2016 and 2020 for sure with his remarks about race and identity.
09:05Kamala Harris calling it the same old show after he questioned her racial identity during
09:10an interview with black journalists.
09:13And things really almost really devolved further with his more remarks at the annual conference
09:19of the National Association of Black Journalists.
09:21Here is how two Democrats, considered potential running mates of Kamala Harris, responded.
09:28We are definitely in the thick and the heat of this presidential race now.
09:33Sarah is in Chicago.
09:34She was at the conference.
09:35We were in the room when this was happening.
09:37And you could hear the other journalists in the audience reacting, honestly, some gasping
09:43at what was being said, what the president was saying to the journalists on stage.
09:49Yeah, I mean, if Donald Trump came here to try and she says, let me just say the American
09:54people deserve better.
09:55The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth and a leader who doesn't respond with
10:00hostility and anger when confronted one answer that really riled up those who are in the room.
10:06And it speaks to a long history of people in this country who have dual backgrounds, who
10:12are of mixed race, being able to say and be who they say they are and not have someone
10:17question it, especially not another white American.
10:20This was a very varied.
10:22And also, he didn't often answer the question.
10:25People left the room feeling pretty disturbed by what they heard from Donald Trump, hoping
10:31that he was going to be able to have a robust conversation about some of the issues that
10:34affect the black community.
10:37Sarah, so lucky you were in the room to bring that perspective.
10:42And we'll talk to you a little bit later about it all.
10:44It's good to see you.
10:46Sure.
10:47Omar, new details this morning on the IDF strike that killed the top Hamas military leader in
10:53mid-July.
10:54And now with the assassination of Hamas' top political leader, what this means for the
10:59region already teetering on the brink of all-out war.
11:01And a wildfire growing so fast, the state of Colorado is now calling in the National Guard
11:06for the first time in decades to help fight the flames.
11:09Plus, a new move by the Biden administration that they say will save families hundreds of
11:14dollars when flying with young children.
11:16We have those details.
11:20And we have major breaking news that is just coming in to CNN having to do with Russia and
11:26a potential prisoner swap.
11:28We're going to get straight over to-
