00:00talking about this morning yeah it's going to change a lot i mean you can already see um you
00:04know there's some dry spots in here i think it'll be easier as far as endurance wise physically on
00:09these guys because it won't be so gnarly and deep but it'd be faster so if your bike's not set
00:14up
00:15properly i think the bike setup might be a bigger issue today because of the high speed but when
00:20there's a couple guys out there i'm not worried about racing it is joe shimota we know he does
00:24his own thing and i'm sure he'll be fine once that gate drops yeah i've even heard that even during
00:29the week not lighting it up at the test track during the week but i've heard that's kind of
00:32just his thing when the racing takes place and the pressure is highest it seems to affect shimota
00:38the least yeah i mean we saw it nothing really bothers him i mean the builder would stand the
00:43pressure that he went through to win that um world championship last year you could tell he has the
00:48right head on his shoulder but i can tell you what if you heard that from me james we're just
00:53about
00:53down he's not fast during the week there was a problem for me like if i wasn't fast um but
00:58these
00:58guys are a different generation and joe uh he'll be completely fine believe me yeah 19th again
01:04quickest in the first session shimota his second to dig it in this championship last year so just
01:09based on that data he's going to be one to watch on the honda hrc progressive rider out of japan
01:15see if he can do better this time yeah i think the one thing you gotta you know wonder with
01:19joe you
01:20know if he's coming in healthy everything's fine but you know go back to a few months ago the beginning
01:25part of the year breaking his neck that was a huge injury and he came back at supercross
01:29and he was all in form but we'll see how confident he is and hopefully it'll be pretty good will
01:35yeah thanks james you're right it's always tough to judge somebody coming back of injuries we just
01:40spoke about with juju bomare there but reach to your point of how good joe was last year finishing
01:46secondary in the championship he lost by 48 points but he was 107 points ahead of third so it's a
01:52very
01:52dominant second if you remember he hung in with hayden deegan and really gave him a run for his
01:57money there three overall wins in the last six rounds and eight overall podiums in 11 rounds so
02:03whilst we're not really sure who's going to step up here this season if we're going to go off stats
02:08we
02:08can definitely for that performance from joe shimota last year and say he is a strong contender
02:13thanks will now this leads me to this question i want to ask you james because he's not affected by
02:18things we know deegan love the head games and it didn't really do anything to affect joe but i've
02:23got to imagine there's other riders that simply not having deegan's presence there is going to help
02:27them step up i know i it will and guys like levi kitchen and julia from there like which went
02:33hand
02:34to hand with hey deegan and it seemed like when they got the the i would say fist fighting but
02:39when
02:39they got in with him it seemed like it affected those guys now hey deegan is not out there and
02:44i'm sure
02:44it's not like they were afraid of but now that opportunity of that head honcho the boss is not
02:49there he's moved up so levi has a lot of confidence and i think that's what you're seeing in the
02:54lap
02:54times getting back to joe my only concern with him would be does he feel confident in himself and
03:00and um you know is he the old school joe shimota makes a small mistake here
03:08yeah yeah just the way the track is i mean how to dry out as the race goes on but
03:13jt what do you
03:14have i just think about joe and his title chances you know will made some great points there about
03:18consistency as we see somebody down that looks like max ansley unfortunately but uh on joe shimota you
03:25know what i love about his game is that you know maybe he didn't win all the race maybe he
03:29wasn't
03:29dominant but you know what he was there all the time you would just look up at the end of
03:33the moto
03:33and there's joe shimota second third and in this class if you look at who he's going to have to
03:39go
03:39up against that's the one thing they haven't been able to claim they have not been able to be
03:43consistent in this series and if joe he doesn't have to win all the time but if he racks up
03:48podiums
03:48throws in some moto wins here and there we could see him winning this championship not by a few but
03:53by a
03:54lot of points yeah that's why he had that big point gap that will was talking about last year jt
03:59now you see the speed levi kitchen hustling again yeah levi has been on it all day i mean
04:04bike looks good it sounds good it seems like they don't figure it out and and um you know i'm
04:09excited
04:10to kind of see what levi because there's been a couple years that he's been a title contender but
04:15injuries that's kind of played him the opportunities now for for him and a lot of guys but especially
04:21for levi so anstu is getting back to the bike we might have in the corner here a replay of
04:28what
04:29happened to the englishman yeah here's max right here this is after the first uh corner
04:36oh excuse me here we go here's max there you go okay so i wonder is he going to try
04:42to jump this
04:43thing there you go oh yeah you can see on the that was a huge hit he wasn't prepared for
04:51that
04:51that bike sucked up and that mud it looks like he just hit a mud spot it kind of came
04:56to instant stop
04:57so i'm looking at the tv he's up riding off that's a great sign and for a guy who's had
05:03some injuries
05:03um that's a tough hit for him but glad to see him on how risky was that jump that he
05:09was trying to do
05:09i've seen a few guys do it but certainly not everyone well looking at the monday quarterback
05:13and it was awfully risky out here um but yeah we've seen a lot of guys do that i think
05:18there's
05:18that soft spot caught max out but he's up and running and another guy we're looking forward to
05:23is rodder d had a great supercross championship finally comes in here healthy another guy with
05:29some speed we see is growing with confidence as the year goes on so i expect a lot for him
05:34and that
05:34husky team when all that situation is going on i think rodder d is going to be a player here
05:39in
05:39his championship and also today you see the lap times there d francisco is third but look at the
05:43improvement from cole davies after that tough first session where he's only 15th he now has the second
05:49fastest overall time so track definitely getting faster and getting an idea some of the riders to
05:55watch could be the 34 here yeah it looks like they're i mean they're kind of the same lap times
05:59as
05:59what um levi did that first one but i think all these guys they understand they can't be that far
06:05back
06:05you know cole davies being that far with gate position especially here at paula um you got to
06:10set it up so i think the lap times are coming up for everyone else oh it's more of the
06:15guys that
06:15struggled to the first one just knew they had to get a good one in the box yeah i mean
06:19as much
06:20confidence you have if you're joe shimoto or even cole davies you can't be down to 19th and you know
06:25that
06:25low especially again with this 180 off the start we know how important the starts are in this 250 class
06:31so
06:31i think that's what you're seeing rather than every the laptop's just dropping a lot
06:36and davies is i think the biggest question of the whole summer we saw what he did at supercross was
06:41dominant winning the 250 east campaign then beat deegan at the finale in salt lake city so the talent is
06:46certainly there there just isn't much data specifically in a motocross so i think either
06:52way it goes it wouldn't be a surprise will and we i don't think he likes that narrative the idea
06:58that
06:58he's not a motocross guy i was talking to him about it yesterday when all the press conference
07:03was going on and he said yeah i just i didn't have a good season and everybody's looking at that
07:09last
07:09year he's coming off injury um i was not prepared physically we were not prepared with the bike he
07:15said and my starts were terrible it's when i did get a good start which we did see him get
07:20he said i
07:20won a moto uh so in his mind at least he is a motocross guy he pointed out that new
07:26zealand does not
07:27have many supercross tracks he's like so what was i racing prior to that prior to starting working
07:32with ben townley in supercross so uh everybody else may have their doubts guys but i think cole davies
07:37is here to make his mark yeah thank you will so yeah he was not prepared when he came back
07:41from
07:42injury last year yesterday we asked him how ready he is this year obviously i got hurt the like the
07:50last
07:50round of supercross so i missed out on most of the outdoors and was only able to do the last
07:55two rounds
07:56so um it's uh you know i've lost out on a lot of experience and you know gaining experience in
08:02all
08:02these tracks learning these tracks um just learning you know this outdoor series so um i got a lot of
08:09you know gaining experience to do um so i feel like that's kind of you know what i have to
08:15focus on
08:16now um and you know just getting good stops and riding like i know i can i think i'll be
08:20good but
08:21um you know i'm feeling really good and another thing with davies this team is never not in it they
08:29always have contenders especially in pro motocross so to imagine that they don't have at least one of
08:35those guys maybe him as a horse they can win this championship is probably far-fetched so you got to
08:41imagine someone on those yamahas is going to get in there yeah no he's he's going to be fine and
08:45we were
08:45talking off air as you said you're not worried if cole gets sixth out here the first couple races like
08:50you know mentally he's going to get better um you know i he's going to be fine and another guy
08:55that's
08:55good to see back off the injury is chance hymas we've been seeing it for the last couple years
09:00the guy has speed when he's on there's no one that can touch him including hayden deegan it was all
09:06about can he stay healthy and then also does chance believe in chance i think right now just like
09:12everybody else levi kitchen it's a important day and year for chance hymas not only for this
09:18championship maybe get his first one but really to really solidify this um 250 class before you start
09:24moving up and um i think chance has a great opportunity if he stays healthy we've seen him do it
09:29before
09:30yeah interesting i believe yesterday said his goal is just be on the podium in the first
09:34uh six or eight motors of the year don't think about the wins just really trying to lock down
09:39that consistency part and stay healthy as you mentioned he was the fast qualifier at this race
09:45last year jt he was and you know it sounds great to be i want to be consistent i want
09:50to get on the
09:51podium i don't know if that's going to hold i think if they let him get a hole shot and
09:55get out front i
09:56think you're going to see him try to do exactly what he did last year and try to run away
10:00with this
10:00thing but the one guy that could be stand right in the way of that is this guy right here
10:04levi kitchen
10:04he has been on rails all morning long the one thing that's been inconsistent in levi kitchen's
10:10game has been the starts though he finds himself in 15 it's going to be a long day and i
10:15don't have
10:15to look far to remember last year at this very race he did not have a good afternoon i don't
10:20have
10:20to look far to see where that speed is coming from he is all in the mail the 47 shimoda
10:25having to talk
10:26with the honda folks about his motorcycle he's in the mechanics area right now but levi
10:31leaving nothing out there yeah and to what jt is talking about his biggest thing is is it's the
10:37starts i mean we saw him in supercross always had speed i mean he was fast a lot of times
10:41during the
10:41motocross but we kept coming from the pack so i i agree i think the consistency is a little you
10:48need it
10:49but what you need to do is come out here and win these races and once you solidify that and
10:54you
10:54everybody else knows how fast you are then you play those days where okay you get a bad start i
10:58need to get inside the top five but and i i think these guys need to come out here and
11:03execute this
11:04race as it's a game seven they need to show up and really get their confidence and also show the
11:09world
11:09that you know this is my title here round one game seven yeah this is not a see where you
11:14fit in
11:14they got to make statements today you feel they they do and the biggest statements is for themselves
11:19you know again it's there's no alpha in this class but there's an opportunity for you to be that guy
11:26and when you're looking at levi kitchen and chance hymas they've been here they won races before so i
11:32think really for these guys they need a good performance and so far levi is leaving no doubt
11:37who's the fastest guy here today three seconds over anyone else on the track as his teammate of the
11:43monster pro circuit kawasaki hamaker second quickest right now this is fly racing coverage of the final
11:49250 session of the day but yeah you go back to jt's point dell this speed could be for naught
11:54if
11:54the starts aren't there for the 47. will what's happening i saw joe shimodo in the mechanics area
12:00here earlier i just went and spoke to the team there to see what they were adjusting and i was
12:04told this
12:04is a minor adjustments he was just kind of looking for a little bit less kind of you know the
12:09hand feel
12:09is what they talked about just a little bit less knocking that out so he said minor adjustments there
12:13and he's feeling pretty happy yeah thank you will yeah that's that's normal i felt like every year you
12:18come to especially coming off supercross or in joe's case he hasn't been riding um the one thing
12:23you have to get used to in motocross is one division things happen a lot quicker but also just getting
12:28used to the bike moving so much in your hands with supercross you're in the air you can kind of
12:32predict where motocross these you saw what happened to max ansteen you get these alligator pits that pop
12:38up out of middle of nowhere and so you got to be having that feeling and get used to being
12:42uncomfortable these guys are getting it whoa hold on right there so hamacre going fast right now he
12:48was fast qualifier twice last year but he's won more races in supercross yet to get a win in motocross
12:54so we asked him yesterday about translating that supercross improvements to the great outdoors
13:01being runner-up in supercross two years in a row now has uh obviously been good for you know my
13:07confidence and um coming up short has been tough but just you know the the knowledge i've gained
13:12throughout those seasons have been stuff that you can't replicate you know at the practice track you
13:16just got to go out there and get that experience um in race form so um definitely you know showing
13:22up
13:23every weekend being smart you know knowing when to push it when to kind of pull back on the weekends
13:27and not uh put yourself in any danger to uh be injured that way you can be there at every
13:31weekend
13:33yeah i agree with those words and you got to remember he's been injured a lot in his career
13:37so the last you know year year and a half has been the improvements have been him being there
13:42every uh weekend and week out and when he's there he's obviously a championship contender um so i think
13:48for seph it's been i think you'll have a different rider this year because i think he's getting past
13:53that you look i just need to be there for all races now i mean he needs to but i
13:58think he has more
13:58confidence to come out here and try to win these races and he knows health is not necessarily the
14:03problem right now so we'll see looks good so far him and levi um pro circuit monster is your pro
14:09circuit one and two so far yeah they got a dialed shimoda is back on the track kind of surprised
14:14to
14:14see kitchen has only been the fast qualifier twice in his career up the top of my head i would
14:18have
14:18thought it was a lot more than that because we know he has speed so kitchen is aiming to be
14:22for the third
14:24time the fast qualifier in 250s now shimoda is not a qualifying master see what he can do here
14:29though yeah if i was levi like well i've been racing not just jet hunter hey deegan those guys are
14:36pretty
14:36fast yeah that's true so he's had a lot of competition and that maybe that's why when he's
14:40those guys are gone he's that much better than everybody else because of racing those guys but
14:44again levi's thing is that first hundred yards he's got to get off the gate because all this can be
14:49obsolete um if he doesn't get a start ah just fun to hear the bikes unwound with the transition
14:59from monster energy supercross to pro motocross let's check in with a couple other riders this is
15:15dax benic part of the rockstar energy husqvarna team doesn't have a lot of racing under his belt
15:21still one of the younger riders so there's just so many unknowns out here he's on the gas right now
15:26so we'll catch up with him and that team is going away next year we believe he's probably going to
15:33have a spot i think with an expanded ktm 250 program but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to show
15:37everybody what he's capable of see what the 58 could do this summer watch also for his teammate
15:51casey cochran who's been running fast all morning cochran is 10th quickest coming back from a series
15:56of injuries and cochran also trying to show the industry what he's capable of on the 59 here's the
16:0258 of benic yeah another guy who had a great supercross season ended up on the podium and as
16:08you mentioned like he was in that category with hayden deegan and you know those guys coming up as a
16:13rookie i mean uh yeah rookie a lot of promise so another guy would show that speed there it is
16:22checkered flag is out in this session we'll be talking to i believe levi kitchen in a moment hey
