00:00This rider's cruising right now. Let's give you the highlights of the first session earlier today and show you the
00:06top three fastest 450 riders this morning. It starts with Chase Sexton, a good sign here for the Monster Energy
00:11Kawasaki man. Yeah, if I'm Chase Sexton, the last time I raced, I won. And we know how good I
00:16am at this track, but I'm not coming off injuries like I have been in the past, I guess. It's
00:20a big day for Chase Sexton and Monster Energy Kawasaki. There's no secret. There's struggles and, you know, Chase Sexton's
00:27got it runs all confident.
00:29Another guy who had a great Supercross season and has been looking forward to this pro motocross is Jorge Prada.
00:35He's been looking good at all the videos I've seen during the off break. Had a chance to talk to
00:39him. He is excited. He said the bike is good. Jorge, 26, is going to be here today fighting for
00:45this win and, I believe, for this championship. But, of course, if it ain't won Lawrence, it's another. Hunter Lawrence,
00:51this is a great sign to see after that heartbreaking Supercross championship. You're wondering how he performed. Would he show
00:58up here?
00:58A lot of motivation. I'm sure it was really hard to deal with. But, of course, Hunter is Hunter Lawrence.
01:03Nothing gets to him. And he comes out here and he's the fastest one. Love the 96 throwing that.
01:10And then you got Hayden Deegan. Still really fasting. Practice. Looked good out there. Runs in the back of Chase.
01:16Chase didn't even realize that anybody was there. No harm, no foul.
01:21Almost called number one right there. It's been a while. It's been a while. The 38. Welcome, baby.
01:28Yeah, between being SMX champ and point leader often, you're also going to see the normal number plate backgrounds on
01:34the bike in a while.
01:35Here are the results from that first qualifying session. Deegan was fourth behind the Sexton Prado Lawrence trio.
01:40Justin Cooper, always quick. Fifth fastest. Garrett Marchbanks. Watch for him. Sixth fastest. Welcome back, RJ.
01:47Hampshire seventh. Tomac Craig Ferrandez rounded out the top ten. Aaron Plessinger back from injury was 11th quickest.
01:54Justin Rodbell told me yesterday he's got to score 30 points in the first three rounds and he can keep
01:59racing all summer.
02:00That wasn't bad, but there's the big story, James. 14th. Jet Lawrence.
02:04Yeah, that was surprising. Made a few mistakes. I mean, the guy's coming off injury, and so that's expected to
02:11be a little rusty,
02:11but I don't think I've ever had to go to the second page of any kind of board to read
02:17on Jet Lawrence, so we'll find out.
02:20I'm sure he's going to come here firing this second practice, JT, if he can.
02:23He is, and you can just see how much these two work together.
02:26This team is so ahead of the game on strategy most of the time, and immediately they put Hunter out
02:32front,
02:32and Jet has been following him since the jump here, and the difference there were, I don't know, six or
02:37seven seconds difference in that first practice,
02:39so the strategy's pretty clear. Hey, figure out where Hunter was going, follow him around, let him show you the
02:44lines on this racetrack,
02:45and both of you have a chance to be one-two here today.
02:48Yeah, that's interesting, actually, that Jet, normally he's that guy. You can think of Hunter Lawrence, you know, being Jet,
02:55towing him around,
02:56so to me, Jet is, you know, trying to find his form to get back. Obviously, Hunter Lawrence was the
03:02fastest,
03:02but the simple mistakes that he's making is sure that's a little bit just rust, but also understanding that he's
03:11going to have his hands full here today
03:12and for this championship.
03:16Well, he quickly has jumped to fourth overall, so a massive improvement from the first session, and it's seven seconds
03:24quicker
03:24than the lap he put in earlier this morning. It's at least better for Jet. Here's Deegan a moment ago.
03:31Kind of the same area that he went down in the back of Chase, just loses the front end, and,
03:37you know, just falls over there.
03:38He's trying to get out of that corner, but that hard base that JT was talking about as the day
03:42goes on, just started losing it.
03:43Harm-no-foul again, but, you know, again, I know he's going faster, but it doesn't look like Jet to
03:51me at this point.
03:52It looks like he's really trying, slamming into some of the corners and stuff, so, again, this will come back
03:57as he gets, you know,
03:58more comfortable, but you can tell he's trying to put in a good lap time, and to me, that's kind
04:04of telling me
04:04he's trying to make sure he's got his speed back, so.
04:09Yeah, well, we got to talk to him yesterday about how different it is trying to ride through this broken
04:14talus bone,
04:15which is a tough one to heal there, the ankle and foot area. Here's Jet's thoughts.
04:20I still have a little bit of limit in my range of motion, like, still had to go on, like,
04:27the small little things, you know,
04:28raising my back break up bits. I just don't have the strength and the range of motion downwards yet, as
04:35far.
04:36And then, landing any jumps, you know, I'm taking most of the impact on my left leg, you know, I
04:41can't,
04:42it still hurts a bit on, if I'm, like, anywhere on the balls of my feet with landing, it kind
04:46of, that,
04:46the heel dropping really hurts it. So, just little things like that, at first it was annoying, so I'd go
04:52to old habits.
04:53Crank up.
04:54Ah! But, it's, um, it's good.
04:58I think, uh, hopefully throughout this outdoor season, you know, I just keep, it keeps getting better and better,
05:04and I can start riding more and more like myself. You know, I still feel a bit, a bit restricted
05:09with it,
05:10but, I mean, I still think a bit restricted. Jet's still, still good enough to compete.
05:17Guys, we just heard Jet say, adapt there, and that's what he's having to do with this injury,
05:23and wow, did he start to adapt fast as we see him jump to the top of the board there.
05:27And speaking to the team, speaking to his physio, Dr. G, just talking to everyone about what that really means.
05:33He said, this bone is never going to be 100%. He doesn't, he can't return to where he was.
05:39And the speed that he is compensating, and that he is adapting, is one of the most impressive things that
05:45they are seeing.
05:46And James, when you've got that level of skill on a bike, when you've got that kind of feel that
05:50Jet has,
05:51were you expecting this to take a while? How long do you expect him to feel it out there at
05:55race pace, and adapt?
05:57Yeah, I mean, everything that he's saying as he was talking, you could see it.
06:01Like, you know, him overjumping the stuff, slamming into the berms.
06:05Obviously, maybe that's coming from his range of motion that he doesn't have in his foot, so he has to
06:10adapt.
06:10But I love seeing, as a rider from Jet Lawrence, that 217 is huge,
06:16because I'm sure he's going to come in here and be like, man, I didn't feel good.
06:19I'm overjumping things, but he's got speed, and you can work with speed.
06:24If he was like he was in that first practice, it would be a struggle.
06:27So he's got the talent. He'll be fine.
06:29Another guy that has the talent is this guy right here.
06:32And, man, I can't tell you the much hype and anticipation Hayden Deegan has brought to this 450 class.
06:40Seeing that number 38, I'm not sure if I'm looking at Hayden O'Brien out there.
06:43I'm not used to this number, but great opportunity for him.
06:47You know, you've got to kick a man while he's down,
06:50and he understands Jet Lawrence might not be Jet Lawrence at the moment,
06:53but I know Hayden Deegan doesn't care, and it's good to see the number 38 out here today competing.
06:59JT.
07:01Watching Hayden Deegan here.
07:02And, guys, you know, there's a real fight,
07:04and I think a battle for kind of supremacy and the mental aspect of this.
07:08And cover your ears, Hayden, but so far in this second session,
07:11I think Jet is trying to quote a lyric from The Who is meet the new boss same as the
07:17old boss.
07:18That is what's in play here.
07:19I think Hayden Deegan is trying to disrupt the hierarchy at the top of this field,
07:23and Jet is trying to say, no, no, welcome to the class, but this is still mine.
07:28And, James, I know you were in that type of kind of battle with Ricky Carmichael in your day,
07:32but I really feel that's what's up for grabs here is who is in charge of this class.
07:36It is, and that's why I'm so excited, you know, watching this.
07:40There's a lot of gamesmanship being played.
07:43So, yeah, so far Jet Lawrence has them, but Hayden Deegan won't be affected by that at all, Jay.
07:49And that's why we think this opening round has more emphasis on it than usual.
07:53Yesterday, Hayden Deegan told us about that transition to the bigger bike.
07:59I'd say the 450 is a little heavier, a little more power, as we know,
08:02and it's really just building strength for it.
08:04I hopped on that thing, and I felt like it hopefully could.
08:07Just getting the speed dialed in, and obviously I'm moving right now.
08:10So everything's clicking, and I'm ready to let it down.
08:14Yeah, I agree.
08:16But I think he has a great opportunity because we know how strong that Monster Energy S.R. Racing team
08:21is.
08:22Unlike when I came into the 450 class or 250, you know, the bike was a big issue.
08:28Where Hayden doesn't have that.
08:29He's had plenty of time to go.
08:30He has the talent.
08:32And then he's getting a ride with his teammate, Justin Cooper, who's no slouch on speed.
08:36So everything's there for him to be able to compete and win this race if he's ready.
08:42He's going to have his hands full with all these guys.
08:45And here's Jay Coop just doing what he does.
08:46It doesn't matter who moves into the class, who moves up, who moves over.
08:51He's still fast.
08:52Third quickest on track right now.
08:53He's always been great at qualifying.
08:55And at some point this year, there will still be a surprise that Justin Cooper is doing as well as
09:01he does.
09:01Every time he gets on the podium, it's like, oh, look at Justin Cooper.
09:04Could happen again today.
09:06Yeah, you go back to last year.
09:09You know, he ran that first motor, second place.
09:14He left everybody else.
09:15He was behind Jett.
09:15So great opportunity for Justin.
09:17We know how fast he is.
09:19And the pits, they call him NBA Jay Coop.
09:22He is so fired up that his New York Knicks, my favorite team, are in the finals.
09:26But who will they meet?
09:27Well, it comes down to this.
09:29You said it.
09:29Game seven.
09:30The most famous two words in sports tonight.
09:32And that will be on Peacock and NBC, the Oklahoma City Thunder against San Antonio Spurs.
09:38And then we'll see who will face the Knicks in the finals.
09:41And I'm going to...
09:42Okay, Justin Cooper, kind of a mild-mannered guy.
09:45Wait till you see him light up when we asked him yesterday about the NBA Finals.
09:50Yeah, so this is a good topic for me right now.
09:53We're just 11 straight right now for the Knicks.
09:55So I got high hopes for them in the finals.
09:58I think it's going to be crazy, especially if they win with what the city is going to do.
10:03I think it's been 27 years since they haven't or have even gone to the finals.
10:07So I think we've got a good chance.
10:09I would like to see them up against OKC more than the Spurs.
10:13See what happens.
10:14So I think they're going to be, you know, we're going to have a good chance either way.
10:19But I'm definitely rooting for them.
10:20I'm tuned in for sure.
10:22That's the most pumped up I've ever seen the guy.
10:24Yeah, I know, smiles, you know, talking, and, you know, just shows you what the Knicks are on a roll,
10:30man.
10:30That's good times.
10:31What it is.
10:32Who you got?
10:32Like, who do you guys, who do you want to play?
10:34He wants to OKC.
10:35Who do you want?
10:36You don't want to miss the alien?
10:38I don't care who it is, man.
10:4011 in a row speaks volumes.
10:42It does.
10:42A lot.
10:43Yeah.
10:44He's pumped.
10:45I went to the locker there in his truck this morning to talk to him about it just to keep
10:48him in the right spot.
10:49You just saw his other teammate, Cooper Webb, for a moment.
10:51There he is.
10:52He has announced this will be his final summer in pro motocross, former 250 champ.
10:57See where he slots in.
10:59Always a little bit under the radar when you make that transition from Supercross to motocross with Webb.
11:04He's a three-time Supercross champ with only one 450 career overall win.
11:09So you never know where he's going to slot in here.
11:11Yeah, you know, but Cooper is Cooper.
11:14You know, I think the one guy that doesn't want to see him out here is possibly Jorge Prada.
11:18You know what I mean?
11:19That's right.
11:20And he's probably going to have to pass Cooper Webb.
11:22We know how tough he is, but good to see him out here.
11:25If this is his last year or what's going on in motocross, I'm sure he's going to put up a
11:30fight wherever he's at.
11:31Yeah, that's right.
11:32There's some residual heat between he and Prado left over from Supercross.
11:37Prado, by the way, now fourth quickest.
11:40Webb is 15th, and here is Hunter Lawrence, the fastest in the first session, third quickest right now.
11:47Let's see if he can go after Jacob and Jet, who are just ahead of him.
11:50You know, at some point, you know, if I'm Hunter, I'm going to tell Dazzy and Honda guys, look, hey,
11:57I'm not towing anybody around, including my brother, because, you know, he was back in 15th.
12:02I tow him around, look at him.
12:03He's going fast.
12:05But Hunter looks good, good to me.
12:08Both these guys look good.
12:10Jorge Prado in the bottom box, looking really good, as I said earlier, very confident.
12:15And, you know, I just like to see from Hunter Lawrence, I just like that he's out here fighting after
12:21that Supercross championship, JT.
12:23Yeah, and he looks so good right now, James.
12:25And I got to watch both of them going through the same corners, both he and his brother, Jet Lawrence,
12:29because he was right behind Jet on the beginning of this lap.
12:32And something I noticed, and I don't know if it's rust, I'd love your opinion on it, James, is Jet
12:36just looks like he has a little bit of a hesitation or a hitch in his corners.
12:40And I say that knowing he has the fastest lap time.
12:42But it looks very un-Jet to me, typically so silky smooth in the corners.
12:46And then I watched Hunter, and he didn't have that hesitation.
12:49He didn't have that little hook in it.
12:51So I just wanted your perspective on that.
12:53Do you think that's rust, or is it something just being a little uncomfortable?
12:56I think it's both.
12:57And, JT, you nailed it.
12:59I'm with you.
12:59I was watching Jet.
13:00And even though he was fast, it doesn't look like Hunter.
13:03Hunter looks repeatable.
13:04You know what I mean?
13:05Like, it's kind of the same thing.
13:07Jet was going fast, but it just looked like he was trying to, look, I need to get some kind
13:12of speed to show myself.
13:13And then as soon as we say that, Hunter Lawrence goes to 216.
13:17So there's a difference between those two, JT.
13:19You're absolutely right on that.
13:20Well, now it's repeatable, and it's fast.
13:22Hunter to the top again.
13:24And the checkered flag is out.
13:25We'll see if Prado or anyone who's still circulating can top that.
13:29But it could be Hunter Lawrence, who has only been fastest qualifier in the 450 class once.
13:36Looking to make it two today.
13:38Here's Prado, though.
13:39Yeah, Jorge.
13:40You know how great a starter he is.
13:42So if he continues that, he's always going to be in the fight.
13:44But, you know, going back to the Hunter, and we talked about in Supercross, the levels that he kept elevating.
13:50Almost took people by surprise.
13:52Oh, look at that.
13:53Just went to second ahead of Jett.
13:54Yeah, the same thing's going to happen here in motocross.
13:57Jett hasn't raced his brother at this level.
13:59So maybe he'll find out, like everybody else did in Supercross, that Hunter Lawrence is a different animal.
14:05And that's kind of the same story you could say with Prado.
14:07He didn't win the Supercross title, but he was much, much, much better than the expectations for him.
14:12And we'll have something new to that game.
14:13And he knew he'd be good in motocross, and he is with his second fastest time.
14:17Deegan, fifth quickest right now.
14:19One last heater.
14:20Let's see what he can do.
14:22Yeah, I hate Deegan.
14:25He's got that dog in him.
14:26So you just know if he's out there, he's going to always be a problem.
14:31He's never going to give up.
14:32And clearly, you know, he'll be there to fight.
14:36Looks like there's some things he'll probably go back and tweak on the motorcycle.
14:39And these are the things that he's going to have to learn.
14:40But clearly, Hayden Deegan, he'll be fine with a 219.
14:46But did Jet Lawrence do what he needed to do in this session, even if he's not fastest,
14:49just getting closer to the front after a very difficult first session?
14:53Yeah, that section was more for Jet Lawrence in his head.
14:56You know, he, from watching him, he's got some work to do.
15:00He's uncomfortable, and they'll work on it.
15:03But he at least goes back to the pit and know I'm fast.
15:05And that's a huge thing as a rider, especially coming off an injury.
15:09Okay, so that's going to be Hunter Lawrence, Prado, Jet Lawrence, Justin Cooper.
15:14And just on the last lap, Garrett Marchbanks jumps into fifth, pushing Deegan down to sixth.
15:20So watch for G-Money there on the monster, Kawasaki.
15:23That was a good run for him.
15:25Sexton will actually be seventh.
15:26We're going to be fourth.
