00:00over at Thunder Valley, you know, you got to assume that, one,
00:04they're going to be more comfortable here on the sand,
00:05but also the second time coming back, and it hasn't been too big of a gap,
00:10so they have some kind of familiar from being here, racing these guys.
00:14So far, it's showing it, but what they're doing across the world is this sort of phenomenal.
00:17Before we continue, make sure you're subscribed to the channel.
00:20That way, you won't miss any of the upcoming Motocross Motos.
00:28But how much management can you really do?
00:31How much can you really do to say, I'm going to make sure I don't get hurt today?
00:35Yeah, I mean, the only manager, you can just talk to yourself all the way up until the gate.
00:39Okay.
00:39And once that race started, and it's hard because the hard part for them
00:43is that they got the speed to win.
00:45So how do you calm those nerves?
00:47And I feel like, you know, especially with Sasha, he knows one way, and that's the go.
00:52So when you start changing that, then it creates more problems.
00:55So, you know, they know it's a chance by coming here, but at the same time,
00:58that chance is worth it to them.
01:00They're living their dream, and, you know, no matter what happens, again,
01:05they got a fan of their winner in my book, and I think they'll be fine.
01:09Katie?
01:10Well, Stu, it's interesting, right?
01:11These guys were starting out front or they came back to the gate,
01:14and Sasha Kunin, this is his third or fourth start here today.
01:17And as I was saying, that's one of the biggest challenges for them coming overseas here
01:21is that this metal start rate is more aggressive than what they're used to.
01:25And as Jake Dungey, his mechanic, was saying, it just takes it that much.
01:29It takes it to a different level.
01:30They got to switch up their start technique a little bit, the throttle, the RPM,
01:33and how they release that clutch when the gate drops.
01:35So for these guys, they're pros.
01:37They can do it.
01:38But you can see it's still something he's thinking about and working on as he preps for the day.
01:44How does that start?
01:46It's maybe like mid-fat, right?
01:51I just wanted to touch on you guys.
01:52You guys were talking about, you know, how do they manage the situation today?
01:56You know, I think part of it is their situation's a little different.
01:59You know, we've seen guys come over in the past.
02:01You go back years ago, Clement de Salle and other guys come over.
02:04Listen, the future for these Kunin brothers is here in the USA.
02:07So I think they're focused on their future here,
02:10where in the past where there was Mark DeRuver here at Southwick,
02:13they were going back and their future was going to still be an MXGP,
02:16so they really needed to lean into that.
02:18I very much believe starting in 2027, you will see them full-time here.
02:22They are very much focused on that.
02:24So, yes, there is an MXGP and MX2 championship waiting in the wings,
02:28but they are thinking about coming here full-time,
02:30not so much returning what happens there.
02:33It sure didn't look in that first qualifying session that Sasha was letting off, no doubt.
02:40Hey, fans, take your race day experience to the next level.
02:43Download the official SMX World Championship app,
02:46gain instant access to live timing and scoring, breaking news,
02:50exclusive race day insights and more, all included.
03:05We're going to keep showing you the overall,
03:07which we believe will remain Sasha Kunin as the overall fastest rider,
03:12but the second time out on track, some of the riders will tell you,
03:17okay, that might not be what sets qualifying, but it is more realistic.
03:20I was talking to RJ Hampshire of the 450 class earlier,
03:23and he said, yeah, the track will be much more like the motos,
03:26so it's important this second session,
03:28even if it's not going to rank in qualifying time.
03:31And that is true, you know, but usually I've been in that.
03:35My boy, Ricky, always kind of made me sometimes dip in that category.
03:38Like, well, yeah, that first one's not legit,
03:40especially when he got that much faster.
03:42He'd be like, that's not real life.
03:43So, but it'd be closer.
03:46At the same time, this track is different.
03:48It's a lot faster than it was in the past with these small changes,
03:52and it seems pretty hard packed.
03:54So I think these guys are going to have their challenge
03:56just adapting to this racetrack compared to the normal Southwick,
03:59as you've seen a couple crashes, guys losing the front end
04:02and losing it in a way where you see it on hard pack, you know.
04:06So it's going to be a challenge for them,
04:08and whoever adapts the best is going to get it done today.
04:10I'll tell you who adapted quickly.
04:12This man, the 37 of Davies,
04:14he did put in a heater on the very first lap of this session,
04:16and it did jump him up to second overall.
04:19So Davies' time from the second session has outpaced all but one time throughout the day,
04:26and it is Davies' first ever time riding at Southwick.
04:30So he learned a lot, clearly, with one practice session.
04:33Yeah, when you're good, you're good.
04:35And Cole Davies is very good watching Sasha come here.
04:40I love how in these spots where he jumps out a little bit longer,
04:43keeps that momentum up, he follows.
04:45Here in the sand, you've got to learn how to, almost like, you know, surfing,
04:49you've got to learn how to ride these berms out, continue that momentum,
04:53sometimes jumping out into the berm, keeping that power going,
04:56almost fading out from the inside to the outside.
04:59So Sasha's really good at doing that.
05:01So is Cole Davies.
05:03Anybody that knows how to ride the sand, you can do it really well.
05:08And keep that bike from being buried, get light on it.
05:12I had a couple of crashes out in that little pit.
05:15Oh, I was hoping you didn't think about those anymore.
05:18Yeah.
05:19Still back there.
05:20They come up, they still haunt, Southwick haunt.
05:24Okay, see if Sasha can somehow actually better his time.
05:27If not, that's pretty impressive for Davies in a couple of tenths
05:31from this second session.
05:33And Davies has been the fastest qualifier at the last three races.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Let's check in with Levi Kitchen here.
05:44Again, he had the second, or he had the fastest,
05:47second fastest time of anyone in the A group in the first session.
05:51He can track all that.
05:53Some of those other times you see Cannon in there.
05:55That was again from the B group who goes out on the track first.
06:01There's Levi, the body English.
06:03That's his trademark.
06:04Yeah, but that actually works out well,
06:05especially on these tracks like this.
06:08You use that body.
06:09Instead of having the bike soak it up,
06:10he uses his body to soak it up.
06:12Keeps that momentum going.
06:13And so far, his lap looks really good for Levi.
06:16Haven't seen him really buried it too much in here.
06:19A little slide out, but not too bad.
06:24Let's see if he could top Davies' time here.
06:26I don't know if anyone's going to get to what Sasha did in the first session,
06:30but the pitcher would like to be best in this session at least.
06:34Yeah, that lap from Cole was very impressive
06:36because he was still about a second pass there
06:39than what we just saw from Sasha.
06:43Cole came to play today, knowing this track or not.
06:50And we talked about the speed that Kitsch had earlier in the year.
06:53Oh, did he get blocked there?
06:54Yeah, got blocked.
06:55He wanted to follow that line out.
06:57But he's going to go for another one.
06:58You see how that, I wouldn't say a lot broader,
07:01but slower guy's in front of you.
07:02Now he's trying to get out of the corner.
07:04That's really going to cost him for speed-wise.
07:05But a little swing out.
07:07Katie?
07:08As we're catching the number 47's moves out there,
07:10I was talking to Mitch Payton about Levi Kitsch
07:12and asking him that same question about the strategy.
07:15To him, he said, well, nothing's really changed.
07:17Now he has had a few bad starts and he has had some crashes,
07:20notably the one in Colorado.
07:22It did hurt his shoulder.
07:23But he said he is fine now.
07:25His body feels good.
07:26His fitness is good.
07:27So he just has to put all the pieces together
07:28and get the job done.
07:30Well, the piece he can't put together
07:32is he cannot get clear racetrack.
07:35This is like a battle going on right now.
07:37Yeah, he's going everywhere.
07:39Eventually, he just goes around the outside.
07:41The guy was trying to put down a fast lap time,
07:43but obviously that's going to cost him.
07:45I still think with Levi, he has a lot of speed.
07:48As long as he's feeling comfortable, he'll be fine.
07:51I know this lap's not going to be the lap,
07:52but I like what I see.
07:56But also it shows you if you don't get a start,
07:58and that's been Levi's kind of biggest issue,
08:00how he just got stuck behind that rider.
08:02Imagine a race.
08:03You've got all these guys out here.
08:05So we'll see.
08:09Nate Thrasher here.
08:10Just got back to racing at Redwood.
08:12He'll fall there.
08:13Yeah, and that's that hard base I was talking about.
08:16Nate wanted to get back out of that line
08:17and go around the outside.
08:18But you see, there is a base to it.
08:21And you've got to learn to just kind of stay in those berms,
08:25let that back tire slot without losing it.
08:27They just kind of slid out there.
08:29No harm, no foul.
08:30I want to defend the 300 that was racing with Kitchen there.
08:33Jonathan Getz.
08:34He is 42nd fastest right now, so he has to hustle.
08:38Top 36 goes straight into the motos,
08:40and everyone else goes into the LCQ.
08:42So he wasn't going to give up on his fast lap either
08:45because he's just fighting to get in.
08:47And in Southwick, there might be more talk about qualifying
08:52than any track of the year.
08:54Yeah, he shouldn't.
08:55It wasn't his fault.
08:56Levi's going to have to get around it.
08:57If you're faster, you'll figure it out.
08:59So that's why I was cautious to say not lap rider.
09:02Another guy that was trying to go.
09:03So, yeah, good for him.
09:06Yeah, Jonathan Getz got to make it happen.
09:07And it's not easy, as we said, to do it in the second session.
09:11Levi's trying, though.
09:14This section is so fast.
09:17Going here, especially as the day gets, these guys get rough.
09:20They're leaning that bike over.
09:22Get those bumps out.
09:23We saw Hayden Deegan get a little scrub here a couple years ago.
09:30See if I can get through here.
09:34A little hesitation.
09:36Again, it costs him there.
09:37You see how much time he lost.
09:39Small, little hesitation.
09:44Oh, send it back down to Katie with a guest.
09:47Yeah, Hayden Deegan here.
09:48We know that this track has been good to you overall last year going 1-1.
09:53Different experience here on the 450.
09:54You've done a lot of prep coming in to Southwick.
09:57Tell us a little bit about that.
10:01Yeah, to be honest, just trying to get a good bike set up for a year.
10:03That's been my big thing is trying to get the bike comfortable with myself
10:05where I can go out there and try and fight for a moto win.
10:09That's really where I'm at.
10:10I feel good.
10:11I just got to get the bike dialed in.
10:12Obviously, we've got one of the best suspension guys,
10:14so keep working towards it.
10:16Use the season to try and find those little things.
10:18I didn't notice that you have danger across your nose on your – that's cool.
10:22Does that happen every race weekend?
10:23Yeah, that's my brand danger, so I got to rep it all the time.
10:27But, yeah, we usually always have something cool on the nose.
10:29All right, guys, Danger Boy is out here.
10:31He's going to be running and obviously watching what these 250s are doing
10:34to learn as he goes.
10:36Thanks, Katie.
10:37Yeah, it'd be interesting to see where Deegan slots in.
10:39There's just so much talk with the Loras is on top,
10:41and then Jorge Prado very good on sand.
10:44Lucas Kunin very good on sand.
10:45Oh, this is Julian Balmer a moment ago over the high side.
10:49Yeah, you can see that front end.
10:50Lost it over that berm.
10:52Southwick, baby, Southwick.
10:54Julian is another rider that kind of needs a good weekend.
10:59Still proud of him.
11:00So far, a great season.
11:02But as far as his championship, him and Levi,
11:04they need to have a bounce-back race.
11:07Right now, Bomer is seventh fastest.
11:10And last week, he was really happy with his riding,
11:12but he got stuck, literally stuck, in a rut on the first lap of Moto 1.
11:17And then Moto 2 crashed twice, and it really wiped out any chance of a good result.
