00:00Hello there, good evening. Hope you've enjoyed this first day of the bank holiday weekend.
00:05For some of us, it certainly has been a hot one, and we've recorded our first 30 degrees Celsius of
00:10the year.
00:11Very rare to be seeing that value recorded at this point in the year in late May.
00:16It's only going to get hotter, though, as we head through the preceding days.
00:19This chart shows temperatures compared to average for the time of year.
00:23This one is for Saturday, and it shows where we've seen the peak of the heat today,
00:26particularly around the Kent, Surrey and London region, that very far south-eastern corner of the UK.
00:32But if we look at the same chart for Sunday, you can see that that heat begins to spread a
00:37bit further inland,
00:38and more broadly, we're going to start to see that heat rising,
00:41and many of us will see temperatures higher tomorrow compared to today.
00:46The one exception you will probably notice is the far north-west of Scotland,
00:49where temperatures are actually a little cooler than average for the time of year,
00:52and that's because we've got persistent cloud plaguing here.
00:55It has been quite dull, and that is going to continue into this evening and overnight.
00:59The patchy rain here actually turning a little bit more persistent in places,
01:03maybe even a touch heavier as well.
01:05Generally, though, elsewhere, it's clear skies overnight.
01:07A few mist and fog patches are possible, but they'll clear off pretty quickly once dawn arrives.
01:12And while some of our rural areas may just drop into single figures
01:15to provide a relatively fresh and chilly start to Sunday morning,
01:19for most of us, we will be holding up around double digits as we kick off the day.
01:24As I said, this rain in the far north-west is going to linger into Sunday,
01:28and it will be a fairly grey, dull, and damp day to come across the Highlands,
01:31parts of the Outer Hebrides, and eventually over towards Orkney.
01:34But really, elsewhere, it's a storyline of plentiful amounts of sunshine
01:38for the vast majority of us, widespread blue skies.
01:41Remember, UV levels will be high,
01:43so that sunscreen will be necessary if you're out and about for prolonged periods of time.
01:47And here are those temperatures, with that extra sunshine just allowing them to peak a little higher.
01:51They're around 31 degrees Celsius in the southeast,
01:54but very broadly into the mid-20s across a lot of areas tomorrow.
02:00But if you are heading towards our coastal regions,
02:03that will provide a little bit of respite for you from some of that heat.
02:06But be aware that sea surface temperatures are still relatively low at this point in the year.
02:11They reach their minimum in March, and then only just begin to uptick as we head into the summer period.
02:17So, at the moment, sea surface temperatures only around 9 to 13 degrees Celsius around the UK.
02:22So, when you step into that fresh, cold water after being on the land for so long,
02:27you may get a bit of cold water shock.
02:29So, it's important that you do take steps to prevent that from happening.
02:33As we head into Bank Holiday Monday itself, then, it's really a repeat scenario.
02:38That rain across the far north-west is still going to be there first thing.
02:41It will ever so slightly ease as we head into the second half of the day,
02:45but still some cloud persisting throughout.
02:47But, ready for the vast majority, once again, it's wall-to-wall blue sunshine.
02:51But that extra sunshine, once again, allowing those temperatures to climb even further.
02:55And so, now we're expecting to see around 33 degrees Celsius in the far southeast of London,
03:01but quite broadly potential for 30 degrees Celsius into parts of northern England,
03:05areas of Wales, and right throughout the Midlands as well.
03:08If we hit that 33, maybe even locally, close towards 34 degrees Celsius,
03:14that would bring us our hottest Bank Holiday Day on record,
03:18as well as our hottest day in May on record as well.
03:21So, it really is quite exceptional heat that is building for the time of year.
03:25So, do take care if you are outside.
03:28Do look after those that are vulnerable in these sorts of situations as well,
03:31even though I'm sure many of us will be outside enjoying the sunshine and the heat that is to come.
03:37We'll keep you up to date with the full details as we do head towards Bank Holiday Monday,
03:41and even into next week, those temperatures will be continuing for a time
03:45before they only slowly ease later on down the line.
03:47But, you can find more on our YouTube channel and also across our social media channels as well.
03:52I'll see you again soon.
03:52Bye-bye.
