00:11Let us pray.
00:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
00:17who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews
00:22who were persecuting you and conspiring against your life.
00:27Root out, I beg you, from my heart.
00:30All evil love of any creature.
00:32Grant that I may never prefer anything to you.
00:36May I always show the most perfect charity towards all men,
00:42especially those who trouble me.
00:45Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you
00:51and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned myself from you.
00:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:01who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem,
01:05according to the commandments of the law,
01:07giving them an example of humility and holy love
01:10by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet,
01:14wiping them with a linen cloth.
01:17I pray that this, your example, may penetrate my soul,
01:22destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me.
01:26Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility,
01:29that I may, without delay,
01:31perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:33Give me perfect obedience,
01:36that I may, with complete diligence,
01:38observe as your commandments,
01:40whatever your appointed representatives may decide.
01:45Give me the most fervent charity,
01:48that I may sincerely love all mankind.
01:53Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:56who out of your unspeakable love
01:58gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist
02:01and in it given yourself to us
02:04with wondrous liberality,
02:06so that you might remain with us
02:08even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:13Grant me, I beg you, O Lord,
02:15an earnest longing
02:17and in kindle in my innermost soul
02:20an intense hunger
02:21for this adorable sacrament.
02:24Grant that when I go to the table of life
02:27I may receive you
02:28with chaste affection,
02:30complete humility
02:31and perfect purity of heart.
02:34May my soul so thirst for you now
02:36and so languish in your love
02:38that I may one day
02:40be found suitable
02:41to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom,
02:44to the glory everlasting of your name.
02:48Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:51who when you were about to leave the world
02:54commanded and comforted
02:56with words of unspeakable sweetness
02:58your disciples
03:00and most earnestly commended them
03:03in prayer to your Father,
03:06most plainly showing
03:07how tenderly you loved them and us
03:10who were to believe through their word.
03:14Grant that my heart
03:15may evermore relish your word
03:17and that I may find
03:19your words sweeter than honey to my taste.
03:24O that the spirit of that burning exhortation
03:27may so glide into my heart
03:28that I may be wholly transformed
03:31into your love.
03:33So direct all my ways, O Lord my God,
03:36that your holy will
03:37may be done in and by me
03:39for ever and ever.
03:43Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:46who went out with your disciples
03:48across the Kedron brook
03:49and came into the garden
03:51which you knew
03:52would be where you would be taken.
03:56May I entirely give up my will
03:58and always follow and love yours.
04:02May I, for your honour
04:03and for the salvation
04:04of my brothers and sisters,
04:06boldly endure any adversity
04:08and be willing even
04:10to lay down my life
04:11if your divine providence
04:13should so ordain it.
04:17Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:19who, as your passion drew nigh,
04:22began to be sorrowful and sad
04:24with a heavy heart
04:26and so that by transferring
04:28the weakness of all your members
04:29to yourself
04:30you might be able to console
04:32and strengthen them
04:33when they were in their time of fear
04:36at the approach of death.
04:38By this, your own weakness
04:40which you have willingly taken upon you
04:44Preserve me, I beg you,
04:46both from the immoderate sorrow
04:48and from foolish gladness.
04:51Grant that the grief
04:53which I have thus far endured
04:54may be for your glory
04:56and for the remission of my sins.
04:59Remove mercifully from me
05:01all distrust
05:02and unnecessary weakness
05:04and confirm and establish my soul
05:07whole in you.
05:10Praise and honour and glory
05:12be to you, O Christ
05:13who fell prostrate on the ground
05:15and prayed to your Holy Father
05:17humbly offering your whole self
05:19to him
05:20saying
05:21Your will be done
05:23give me grace
05:25in every necessity and trouble
05:27to fly to you in prayer
05:29and freely to resign
05:31and myself
05:32give myself up
05:33to your will.
05:36May I never unduly endeavour
05:38to escape from trouble
05:39but receive all things
05:41from your hand
05:42with a quiet mind
05:43and may I endure everything
05:46in meekness of spirit
05:48for your love.
05:50Amen.
05:53O Lord, open our lips
05:55and our mouth shall sing
05:58your praise.
06:05O be joyful in the Lord
06:09early thanks
06:12for the Lord with madness
06:15and come in one
16:38There is the love of the light of the lightest,
16:44and joyful gladness for such as a true heart.
16:54Rejoice in the glory of the lightest,
16:59and in thanks for the remembrance of his holiness.
17:08Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
17:21As it was in the beginning, it now and ever shall be,
17:30worthy of the lightest, Amen.
17:51The Epistle to the Hebrews, Chapter 9
17:57Now the first covenant, in fact, had regulations for worship and its earthly sanctuary.
18:04For a tent was prepared, the outer one, which contained the lampstand, the table, and the presentation of the loaves.
18:12This is called the Holy Place.
18:15And after the second curtain, there was a tent called the Holy of Holies.
18:21It contained the golden altar of incense, and the Ark of the Covenant, covered entirely with gold.
18:29In this Ark were the golden urn containing the manna, Aaron's rod that had budded, and the stone tablets of
18:38the covenant.
18:40And above the Ark were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat.
18:46But now is not the time to speak of these things.
18:51So with these things prepared like this, the priests enter continually into the outer tent, as they perform their duties.
18:59But only the High Priest enters once a year into the inner tent, and not without the blood that he
19:06offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance.
19:12The Holy Spirit is making clear that the way into the Holy Place had not yet appeared, as long as
19:19the old tabernacle stood.
19:22This was a symbol for the time then present, when gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not perfect the
19:29conscience of the worshipper.
19:32They served only for matters of food and drink and various ritual washings.
19:38They are external regulations imposed until the new order came.
19:44But now has Christ come as the High Priest of the good things to come.
19:49He passed through the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
19:57And he entered once and for all the most holy place, not by the blood of goats and calves, but
20:04by his own blood.
20:05So he secured for himself eternal redemption.
20:10For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who are
20:15defiled, consecrated them and provided ritual purity,
20:21how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,
20:29purify our consciences from dead works to worship the living God?
20:37And so he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the eternal
20:43inheritance he has promised,
20:45since he died to set them free from the violations committed under the first covenant.
20:53For where there is a will, the death of the one who made it must be proven.
20:58For a will takes effect only upon death, since it carries no force while the one who made it is
21:04alive.
21:06So even the first covenant was inaugurated with blood.
21:10For when Moses had spoken every command to all the people according to the law,
21:16he took the blood of calves and goats with water, scarlet wool and hyssop,
21:21and sprinkled both the book and all the people,
21:25saying,
21:26This is the blood of the covenant that God has commanded you to keep.
21:31And both the tabernacle and all the utensils of worship he likewise sprinkled with this blood.
21:38Indeed, according to the law, almost everything was purified with blood,
21:42and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
21:47So it was necessary for the sketches of the things in heaven to be purified with these sacrifices.
21:55But the heavenly things themselves required better sacrifices than these.
22:02For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with hands,
22:06the representation of the true sanctuary,
22:09but into heaven himself,
22:11and now he appears in God's presence for us.
22:16And he did not enter to offer himself again and again,
22:19the way the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own.
22:25For then he would have to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world.
22:31But now he has appeared once and for all,
22:35at the consummation of the ages,
22:37to put away sin by his sacrifice.
22:40And just as people are appointed to die once and then face judgment,
22:46so also,
22:47after Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many,
22:51to those who eagerly await him,
22:53he will appear a second time,
22:55not to bear sin,
22:57but to bring salvation.
23:00This is the word of the Lord.
23:03Thanks be to God.
23:12In the previous chapter,
23:14in the epistle to the Hebrews,
23:17the author makes mention of the prophecy in Jeremiah,
23:20where God said that in those days,
23:22he was going to make a new covenant with the people,
23:25not like the old covenant,
23:27which was written on the tablets of stone,
23:30but he was going to write his law on the fleshly tablets of their hearts.
23:36Now in the declaration that God is going to make this new covenant,
23:40it means the first covenant would be set aside
23:43in order that he might establish the new one.
23:48When Jesus took the emblems of the Passover,
23:51he said,
24:00And so the old covenant had the remission of sins
24:04through the offering of sacrifices by the priests
24:07and on the day of atonement by the high priest.
24:11But God has established a new covenant,
24:14not written on the tablets of stone,
24:16but God writes his law rightly
24:18on the fleshly tablets of our own hearts.
24:23And so the first covenant has been set aside
24:26that God might inaugurate the new covenant
24:28through Christ Jesus.
24:32Continuing on into today's reading,
24:35carrying over the thoughts of chapter 8,
24:38he continues talking about this new covenant relationship
24:42that we have with God,
24:44contrasting it with the first covenant
24:45that was under the law.
24:52Remember the covenant under the law.
24:54God said,
24:56And if they will do them,
24:57they shall live by them.
25:00The first covenant of the law was,
25:02If you will obey me and these statutes,
25:05then I will be your God.
25:08And the first covenant was established
25:10on man's obedience and man's faithfulness.
25:13But the new covenant is established
25:16on God's faithfulness,
25:17the work that God has wrought for us
25:20through Jesus Christ.
25:23The old covenant failed,
25:25not because it wasn't good,
25:28not because it did not declare the truth,
25:30but it failed because man was weak
25:33and did not live by it,
25:34and could not live by it.
25:37But the new covenant is established forever
25:40because it is a covenant
25:42predicated upon God's faithfulness,
25:45and most surely God is faithful.
25:49So in that first covenant,
25:52God established with Moses,
25:53he was to build the tabernacle,
25:55and they were to have sacrifices
25:57offered within the tabernacle,
25:59and there was to be the worship of God there
26:02within the tabernacle
26:03by the priests.
26:08So first of all,
26:09in this tabernacle,
26:10this tent that was made
26:12was 45 feet long
26:14and 30 feet wide
26:15and 15 feet tall.
26:17Sort of a box-shaped tent,
26:20not like a pitched tent
26:21that we would perhaps
26:22more usually think of.
26:24more box-shaped,
26:2615 feet from the corners tall
26:28and 45 feet long
26:29and 30 feet wide.
26:32Now the inner part of the tent
26:34was divided into two sections.
26:36As you first entered into the tent
26:38from the veil
26:38that faced toward the east,
26:40the first thing you would come upon
26:42in this room,
26:43being 30 feet long
26:45and 15 feet wide,
26:47over on your right-hand side
26:48would be a table,
26:49the table of showbread.
26:52On the table were
26:53twelve loaves of bread,
26:55one loaf representing
26:57each of the tribes of Israel.
27:00Before you,
27:01and in front of the veil
27:02that went through
27:03into the next room in the tent,
27:05there was the altar of incense
27:07where the priest would come
27:08and offer the incense,
27:10which was representative
27:12of the prayers of the people,
27:14and he offered them to God.
27:18On the left-hand side,
27:19as you came into the veil
27:21of the first tent,
27:22or on the first room
27:24within the tent,
27:26there was this lampstand
27:27with seven branches out of it,
27:30and it was lit,
27:31and there were little cups of oil,
27:33and they would put the wicks
27:34in the oil,
27:35and it was the light
27:36in this portion of the tent.
27:38These things are all representative
27:40of things that are in heaven.
27:42So in the menorah,
27:44or the lampstand,
27:45with seven cups coming out
27:47of the one branch,
27:47you have the symbol
27:49of the sevenfold
27:50or complete working
27:51of the Holy Spirit.
27:53You have, of course,
27:54the altar of incense.
27:56And so he talks here
27:57that in the first part,
27:59with the candlestick,
28:00the table with the showbread,
28:02which is called the sanctuary
28:04or the holy place.
28:08After that,
28:10you went through
28:10into the second veil,
28:12being called
28:13the Holy of Holies
28:14or the Holiest of All.
28:17In there was a golden censer
28:19and the Ark of the Covenant
28:20that was overlaid
28:22all around with gold,
28:23in which was the golden pot
28:25with the manna,
28:27Aaron's rod that had budded,
28:29and the tablets of the covenant.
28:33The Ark of the Covenant
28:34would surely be
28:35an interesting artefact to find.
28:38I don't know if I'd want to touch it
28:40if I found it,
28:41but within it,
28:42they preserved a jar
28:44of the manna
28:45that God fed their fathers
28:46in the wilderness.
28:48They also preserved
28:49Aaron's rod
28:50that had budded,
28:52by which God had affirmed
28:54Aaron's family
28:55to be the high priestly family
28:57and the founding
28:58of the Aaronic Order.
29:01Then also,
29:02and this is what I would
29:03perhaps absolutely love to see,
29:05the two tablets of stone
29:07upon which God
29:08had put the Ten Commandments.
29:10Wouldn't that be exciting
29:12to look at?
29:14So,
29:14this was in
29:15the Ark of the Covenant
29:16and it was the basis
29:19of the covenant
29:19of God with the nation,
29:21their obedience
29:22to the law
29:23and to the priesthood service
29:25under Aaron the High Priest.
29:30Over this,
29:31in verse 5,
29:32we read,
29:33there were the cherubims
29:34of glory
29:34shadowing the mercy seat.
29:38Now again,
29:39these are all a model
29:40of what the throne
29:41of God in heaven
29:41is like,
29:42surrounded by cherubims.
29:46And we continue
29:47in verses 5 and 6,
29:48we cannot speak
29:49at this particular time
29:51about these things.
29:52When these things
29:53were ordained,
29:54the priests went always
29:56into the first tabernacle,
29:57accomplishing the service
29:58of God.
30:02Daily,
30:02the priests would go
30:03into this first part
30:05of the tent.
30:06Once a week,
30:07they would change
30:08the loaves of bread
30:09on the table of shea bread.
30:11Every day,
30:12they would change
30:13and fill the oil
30:14in the cups
30:14and trim the wicks
30:15and so on,
30:17because God wanted
30:18that this light
30:19burn before him
30:20continually.
30:22Then they would come
30:23and offer the prayers
30:24of the people,
30:24these little golden bowls
30:26that they would have
30:28the incense in.
30:29And when they had lit
30:30the fires and all
30:32for the sacrifices outside,
30:33they would take
30:34live coals
30:35or burning coals
30:36out of the fire
30:37and put them
30:39in the little bowls
30:39of incense.
30:41And then they would go in
30:42and the little bowls
30:43were on chains
30:44and they would go in
30:46and swing this incense
30:47before the altar.
30:49It was a symbol
30:50of the prayers
30:51of the people
30:51ascending before God.
30:53And this they did
30:54every day.
30:58There were a certain
30:59number of sacrifices
31:00and types of sacrifice
31:01that had to be offered
31:02every day.
31:04Then, of course,
31:05during the day,
31:06the hundreds of people
31:07that would come
31:07with their various types
31:08of sacrifice
31:09to offer to God.
31:11And so the priests
31:12were kept busy
31:13all day long
31:14in these offerings
31:14to the Lord,
31:16as well as the regular
31:17times of prayer
31:18when they would go
31:19before the Lord
31:20and all.
31:23In the Gospel
31:24of St. Luke,
31:25we read how the father
31:26of John the Baptist,
31:27Zachariah,
31:28was a priest
31:29after the course
31:30of Abia.
31:31It was his duty
31:33at this particular time
31:34to offer the prayers
31:35and the incense
31:36before the altar
31:36of the Lord.
31:38Usually,
31:39a priest would serve
31:40for one month
31:41a year.
31:42And they had a good
31:43thing going.
31:45For the rest of the year,
31:46they would go back
31:47to their homes
31:47and be with their families.
31:50While Zachariah
31:51was offering the incense
31:52before the altar
31:52of the Lord,
31:53the angel Gabriel
31:55appeared to him
31:55and informed him
31:57that his wife Elizabeth
31:58in her old age
31:59was to bear a son.
32:02He would be
32:03the forerunner
32:04of the Messiah.
32:06And so you can read
32:07a little about
32:08the service of God
32:09there within
32:10this holy place
32:11which was outside
32:12of the Holy of Holies.
32:18Verse 7 continues
32:20Into the second,
32:21that is the holiest
32:22of all,
32:22or the Holy of Holies,
32:23the high priest
32:25went alone
32:26once a year,
32:27not without blood
32:28which he offered
32:29for himself
32:30and for the errors
32:31of the people.
32:34The Holy of Holies,
32:36where man met God,
32:37was off limits
32:38to everyone
32:39except the high priest.
32:41He went there
32:42only once a year
32:44on the day of atonement
32:45known as Yom Kippur.
32:48However,
32:49with no tabernacle
32:51or no temple,
32:52they had changed
32:53Yom Kippur
32:54from the day
32:55of atonement
32:55to the day
32:56of reflection.
32:58But the high priest
32:59would go in
33:00only on this one day
33:02and he would go in
33:03twice on the one day.
33:07He would first of all
33:08have to bathe
33:09and then he would
33:10offer an ox
33:11for his own sin
33:12as a sacrifice
33:13for his sins
33:14and he would go in
33:15to the Holy of Holies
33:16with the blood
33:17of the ox
33:18that he had sacrificed
33:19for his own sin.
33:21He was to sprinkle
33:22the blood
33:23on the mercy seat
33:24in a special order
33:26seven times
33:27in front of the mercy seat
33:28and put it on the corner
33:30and all
33:30and so there was
33:31a regular routine.
33:33The sixteenth chapter
33:35of the book of Leviticus
33:36tells us the rules
33:37for the day of atonement
33:38and the things
33:39that the high priest
33:40had to do that day.
33:42Having made the offering,
33:44the blood of the ox
33:45for his own sin,
33:46he would go back outside,
33:47bathe again,
33:48change his clothes
33:49and then they would
33:51take two goats
33:51and cast lots
33:52on the two goats.
33:54The one on which
33:55the lot fell
33:56was to be slain
33:57and offered before God
33:58for the sins
33:59of the nation.
34:00The other goat
34:01was to be led
34:02by a priest
34:03out into the wilderness
34:04and turned loose.
34:08They would confess
34:09the sins of the nations
34:10on these two goats.
34:13The one would then
34:15be slain
34:15and the high priest
34:16for the second time
34:17would go into
34:18the Holy of Holies
34:19and would offer
34:20for the sins
34:21of the nation
34:21of this one day
34:22the first goat
34:23upon which
34:24the lot had fallen.
34:27The other goat
34:28being led
34:28into the wilderness,
34:29having the sins
34:30confessed upon it,
34:31was turned
34:32to run free,
34:34to get lost,
34:35basically.
34:37The idea
34:38is that the sacrifice
34:39for sins,
34:40the putting away
34:41of sin
34:41by the sacrifice,
34:43but then actually
34:44the separation
34:45from sin,
34:46the goat
34:47being turned loose
34:48and disappearing
34:49into the wilderness.
34:51God put away
34:53our sins
34:53and they're not
34:54to be remembered again.
34:56And so the two goats,
34:57the one slain
34:58and the other
34:58turned loose
34:59into the wilderness.
35:05The Holy Spirit
35:07signified in this way
35:08then,
35:08as we read
35:09in verse 8,
35:10that the way
35:10into the holiest
35:11of all
35:11was not yet
35:12demonstrated
35:13while the first
35:14tabernacle
35:15was still standing.
35:18As long as
35:18the tabernacle
35:19was there
35:20and standing,
35:20the approach
35:21to God
35:21directly by man
35:22was impossible.
35:25This bore witness
35:26to the fact
35:27that man
35:27could not just
35:28come directly
35:29to God.
35:30There was
35:31this heavy veil,
35:32curtain,
35:33if you like,
35:33separating man
35:35from God.
35:38It is
35:39significant
35:39that when
35:40Jesus was
35:40crucified,
35:41we read
35:42that this veil
35:43in the temple
35:43was torn
35:44from top
35:45to bottom.
35:46God ripped
35:47the thing up.
35:50Had man
35:51ripped it,
35:52no doubt
35:52it would have
35:53been from
35:54the bottom
35:54to the top.
35:55But God
35:56ripped the veil
35:57at the death
35:57of Jesus
35:59signifying
35:59the way
36:00into the
36:00presence
36:01of God
36:01was now
36:02open to
36:03all man.
36:05You and I
36:06can come and
36:06go into
36:07the presence
36:08of God
36:08through Jesus
36:09Christ.
36:10This glorious
36:12sacrifice
36:12for our sins.
36:14We can present
36:15ourselves right
36:16into the very
36:16presence of God
36:18through his work
36:19on our behalf.
36:21And as long
36:21as the first
36:22tabernacle stood,
36:23the Holy Spirit
36:24signified that the
36:25way into the
36:26holiest
36:26into the very
36:27presence of God
36:28was not yet
36:30shown or
36:31open.
36:33This was a
36:34figure,
36:35the tabernacle,
36:36that for the
36:37time then
36:37present,
36:38in which were
36:38offered but
36:39gifts and
36:39sacrifices,
36:40that could not
36:41make him that
36:42did the service
36:43perfect,
36:44as pertaining
36:45to his
36:45conscience,
36:46which stood
36:47only in meat
36:48and drinks,
36:49and in various
36:50washings and
36:50carnal ordinances,
36:53imposed upon them
36:54until the time
36:54of the
36:55reformation that
36:56was brought
36:57about by
36:57Jesus Christ.
36:59But Christ
37:00being a
37:02high priest of
37:03good things to
37:04come, by a
37:05greater and more
37:06perfect tabernacle,
37:07not made with
37:08hands, that is to
37:09say, not of
37:10human building,
37:11and neither by
37:12the blood of
37:13goats nor
37:13calves, but by
37:14his own blood,
37:15he entered once
37:16into the holy
37:17place, having
37:18obtained an
37:19eternal redemption
37:20for us.
37:21Verses 9 to 12.
37:25The contrast
37:26is the
37:27high priest
37:28had to go
37:28every year
37:29to offer
37:30first the
37:30offerings for
37:31his own
37:31sin, and
37:32then to
37:33offer for
37:33the sins
37:33of the
37:34people.
37:35Every year
37:35he was
37:36obliged to
37:37do this.
37:39But Jesus
37:39once went,
37:41but not into
37:42the tabernacle
37:42made with
37:43hands, but
37:44entered into
37:44heaven itself,
37:46of which the
37:47earthly tabernacle
37:48was a mere
37:48replica.
37:50He entered
37:51into heaven
37:52itself, not
37:53with the
37:53blood of
37:54goats or
37:54calves, but
37:56with his
37:56own blood,
37:57entered into
37:58the presence
37:59of God, having
38:01obtained eternal
38:02redemption for
38:02us.
38:03And so then
38:04with his own
38:05blood, he was
38:06then both the
38:07sacrifice and
38:08the sacrificer.
38:09He was both
38:10the offering and
38:11the one making
38:12the offering.
38:20under the
38:20old covenant,
38:21you would
38:22take your
38:22offering to
38:23the priest and
38:23he would
38:24offer it for
38:24you.
38:26Jesus became
38:27both, the
38:28offering itself
38:29and the one who
38:30offered the
38:30offering unto
38:31God in
38:32entering into
38:33the presence of
38:34God by his
38:35own blood,
38:36redeeming man.
38:40Verses 13 and
38:4114 tell us,
38:42for if by the
38:43blood of
38:44bulls and
38:45goats and
38:45the ashes of
38:46a heifer
38:46sprinkled on
38:48the unclean
38:48would sanctify
38:49it to the
38:50purifying of
38:51the flesh, how
38:53much more
38:53shall the
38:54blood of
38:54Christ, who
38:55through the
38:55eternal spirit
38:56offered himself
38:57without blemish
38:58to God, purge
38:59your conscience
39:00from dead
39:01works to
39:02serve the
39:03living God?
39:05As he points
39:06out the
39:06weakness of
39:07the sacrifices
39:08made by the
39:09priests is that
39:10they could not
39:10really give us
39:11a clear
39:12conscience, they
39:13were a reminder
39:14of our sin, and
39:16the fact that they
39:17had to do it
39:17every year made
39:18us constantly
39:19conscious of
39:20our guilt.
39:22But Jesus
39:23Christ has
39:23purified our
39:24consciences in
39:25that he has
39:26once and for
39:27all entered
39:28in to make
39:28an atonement
39:29for us with
39:30his blood, having
39:32offered himself
39:32without spot.
39:36when they
39:37brought a
39:37lamb to
39:38God, God
39:41wouldn't
39:41accept any
39:42cast-off.
39:44Here is an
39:45old cow, it's
39:47about ready to
39:47die, let's see
39:48if we can get
39:49some good out
39:49of it, let's
39:50give it to
39:50God.
39:52It's tragic
39:53really that so
39:54many times we
39:56as men want
39:57to give the
39:58cast-offs to
39:59God.
40:00I can't use
40:01it any more, I
40:02might as well
40:02give it to
40:03God.
40:04It's no use
40:05to us, wrote
40:06here.
40:12There is a
40:12story of a
40:13farmer who
40:14once came in
40:15to breakfast and
40:16announced to
40:16his wife that
40:17their cow had
40:18twin calves.
40:19He said, I'm
40:20so excited about
40:21it, I want to
40:22give one to the
40:23Lord and keep
40:24one to myself.
40:26She said, oh,
40:27I think that's a
40:28wonderful idea.
40:30So, as the
40:31calves grew up, he
40:32kept announcing
40:32that when they
40:33were old enough
40:34to sell one,
40:35belong to God
40:36and one was
40:37going to belong
40:38to him.
40:40She said, which
40:42one is the
40:42Lord's?
40:44He said, it
40:45doesn't make any
40:45difference.
40:46One is the
40:46Lord's and one
40:47is mine.
40:49And so he
40:49would never put
40:50the finger on
40:51one of them,
40:51being the
40:52Lord's and
40:52one of his.
40:54They were
40:55just both the
40:56same.
40:58But one
40:59morning he
40:59came in and
41:00announced sad
41:02news.
41:03A terrible
41:04thing has
41:05just happened.
41:06God's calf
41:07has died.
41:11God will not
41:12accept a
41:13cast-off.
41:14He said, when
41:15you offer a
41:16lamb, it has
41:16to be without
41:17spot.
41:18A spot being an
41:20inherent defect in
41:21the animal.
41:22It also had to be
41:23without blemish.
41:24A blemish was an
41:26acquired defect.
41:28The lamb born with
41:29spots was a
41:30genetic thing.
41:32A lamb with
41:32blemishes was the
41:34result of an
41:34encounter with a
41:35wolf, falling
41:37down a cliff, or
41:38getting caught and
41:39injured.
41:41The lamb that was
41:43offered had to be
41:44both without
41:44inherent and
41:46genetic defect.
41:48Without spot or
41:50blemish.
41:52In the first
41:53epistle of
41:54Peter, chapter
41:551, verses
41:5518 and 19, we
41:58read, We are
41:59redeemed not with
42:00corruptible things
42:01such as silver and
42:02gold from our
42:03empty manner of
42:04life, but with the
42:05precious blood of
42:06Jesus Christ, who
42:08was a lamb without
42:09spot and blemish.
42:12It can truly only
42:13be said of Jesus
42:14that he was
42:15without spot.
42:16He was born
42:18without the
42:19sinful nature.
42:19He had no
42:21inherent sin
42:21within him.
42:27It's an
42:27interesting thing
42:28that they have
42:29discovered that
42:29the gene factors
42:30that make up the
42:31blood in a child
42:32essentially come
42:34from the Father.
42:36Therefore, the
42:37gene factors
42:37creating the
42:38blood in Jesus
42:39Christ coming
42:40from the Father
42:40came directly
42:42from God and
42:43was not spotted
42:43by the inherent
42:45defects in
42:46mankind.
42:48Jesus was
42:49not only born
42:50pure, but he
42:51remained pure.
42:52He was without
42:53blemish, and so
42:55he could only
42:56qualify as a
42:57sacrificial lamb.
43:00You see, you
43:01could never qualify
43:02as a sacrificial
43:03lamb before God,
43:04for we were born
43:05with spots, and
43:07even if we weren't,
43:08we have acquired
43:09blemishes, and so
43:11we would never be
43:12fit to be a
43:12sacrifice for sin.
43:13But Jesus, without
43:16spot or blemish,
43:18offered himself to
43:19God, that he
43:20might cleanse
43:21your consciences
43:23from dead works,
43:24that you might
43:25serve the living
43:26God.
43:29Now, there are
43:30many people who
43:31are still trying to
43:32please God with
43:34their works.
43:35They're still seeking
43:36to offer God the
43:37works of their
43:38hands, and
43:40unfortunately, that
43:41is what the Jews
43:42continue to do
43:43today.
43:46But there are no
43:47sacrifices for
43:48sins, there were
43:49no offerings, there
43:50were no lambs that
43:51are being slain, there
43:52are no goats or
43:53bulls.
43:55Instead, they sit
43:56in their homes and
43:57reflect upon their
43:58lives and upon all
43:59their good works, and
44:01also their evil
44:02connivings.
44:05But as they
44:06reflected, they
44:06prayed that God
44:07would accept their
44:08good works and
44:09overlook the evil, and
44:11as long as their
44:11good works could
44:12overbalance their
44:13evil, they will
44:14feel comfortable.
44:17Of course, many of
44:18them race around
44:18trying to do a lot
44:19of good works, so
44:21that they might
44:22find comfort.
44:24Jesus has purged
44:25us from these
44:26dead works, that
44:27we might serve the
44:29living God.
44:31Verse 15 tells
44:32us, for this
44:33cause he is the
44:34mediator of the
44:36new covenant.
44:38Now, the high
44:38priest was the one
44:39who was the
44:40mediator under the
44:41old covenant, but
44:42Christ is the
44:43mediator of the
44:44new, so that
44:46as verse 15
44:47continues, by the
44:48means of death
44:49for the redemption
44:50of transgressions
44:51that were under
44:51the first
44:52testament, they
44:53which are called
44:54might receive the
44:56promise of
44:57eternal inheritance.
44:59So Christ has
45:00become the
45:01mediator.
45:02This cup is the
45:04new covenant of
45:04my blood shed for
45:05the remission of
45:06sins, the new
45:08testament, that by
45:11his death he has
45:12made the redemption
45:13for our transgressions
45:14that were committed
45:15under the first
45:16covenant, under the
45:17law, that we who
45:19have been called
45:20then might receive the
45:21promise of eternal
45:22inheritance.
45:25Back in verse 12, we
45:26had eternal redemption
45:27and now the eternal
45:29inheritance for those
45:30who are eternally
45:31redeemed.
45:33How glorious is
45:34this eternal
45:35inheritance!
45:38Returning to the
45:39first epistle of
45:40St. Peter, he
45:42tells us, Thanks be
45:43to God, who has
45:44caused us to be
45:45born again into a
45:46living hope by the
45:47resurrection of
45:48Jesus Christ from
45:49the dead, to an
45:51inheritance that is
45:52incorruptible, undefiled,
45:54and does not fade
45:55away that which is
45:57reserved in heaven
45:58for you, who are
46:00kept by the power of
46:01God through faith.
46:03So this eternal
46:05inheritance is ours
46:07in Christ.
46:11Paul the Apostle
46:12prayed for the
46:13Ephesians that they
46:14might know what is
46:15the hope of their
46:16calling, if you
46:18only knew the
46:18glories that God
46:19has in store for
46:20you in his eternal
46:22kingdom, as you are
46:23the heirs of this
46:24inheritance.
46:28Verses 16 and 17
46:30continue.
46:31Now where a
46:32testament is, or
46:33where there is a
46:34will, there must be
46:35a necessity of the
46:37death of the
46:39testator.
46:41For the testament
46:42is of a force only
46:44after someone dies,
46:46otherwise it has no
46:47strength at all, while
46:49the testator lives.
46:52And so a person makes
46:53out a will.
46:55The will does not
46:56come into force until
46:57they die.
46:58They have made out
46:59their last will and
47:00testament.
47:00This is what I want
47:02you to do with my
47:03things when I die.
47:05But the will does not
47:07come into force.
47:07It has no significance
47:09at all until the
47:10person who has made it
47:11is dead.
47:13Then it has force.
47:16Jesus established the
47:17covenant, but by his
47:19death the covenant was
47:20enacted, so that we are
47:22now in that glorious
47:24covenant.
47:25Christ having died, the
47:27covenant comes into
47:28force.
47:30It is something that we
47:31can now benefit from
47:32because of the death
47:34of Christ.
47:37We read in verses 18
47:39to 22, Now neither the
47:41first covenant was
47:42dedicated without blood.
47:44For when Moses had
47:45spoken every precept to
47:47all the people according
47:48to the law, he took the
47:49blood of calves and goats
47:51with water and scarlet
47:53wool and hyssop, and
47:54sprinkled both the book
47:56and all the people, saying,
47:57This is the blood of the
47:59testament which God has
48:00enjoined to you.
48:03Moreover, he sprinkled
48:04with blood both the
48:05tabernacle and all the
48:06vessels for the ministry,
48:08and almost all things are
48:10by the law purged or
48:11cleansed with blood, and
48:13without the shedding of
48:14blood there is no
48:15remission.
48:17What an important
48:18declaration this is.
48:21When Moses established
48:22the whole thing, he
48:24killed the blood, he
48:25killed the goats, he
48:27mixed it with water,
48:28sprinkled the people,
48:30sprinkled the book, and
48:31he sprinkled the whole
48:32place to set it apart.
48:33This is God's will.
48:35It is now enforced and
48:37enforced by the blood
48:38that has been shed, a
48:39blood covenant.
48:41It was through the blood
48:42covenant that everything
48:43was cleansed.
48:46The Bible speaks of the
48:47blood of Jesus Christ,
48:48cleansing us from all
48:49sin.
48:50And so, these things, the
48:53testament then being
48:54enforced to the
48:55shedding of the blood
48:55as it now comes into
48:57force, he said, for
48:59without the shedding of
49:00blood there is no
49:01remission, that is, no
49:03remission of sin.
49:06This is perhaps where
49:08the devout Jews of today
49:10enter into some
49:11difficulty.
49:12There is little doubt
49:13that they are entirely
49:15sincere.
49:16sincere.
49:17They love God and they
49:19are very sincere in their
49:21worship of God.
49:24But their works alone will
49:26never atone for their sin.
49:27This is against Scripture.
49:30And so they have a great
49:31problem.
49:32And that's the great
49:33problem that plagues all
49:35men, the problem of sin.
49:37What can I do about my
49:38guilt?
49:39If there is no temple, if
49:41there are no sacrifices, if
49:42there is no shedding of
49:43blood, how are our sins
49:45remitted?
49:49How can they be remitted if
49:50without the shedding of
49:51blood there is no remission?
49:54So that is a great problem
49:56that every Jew has to face
49:58because they cannot keep
50:00God's first covenant that
50:01he established with them.
50:03Of course, they reject the
50:05second covenant, but they
50:07cannot keep the first.
50:08And so, having set aside the
50:10law of God, they teach the
50:12traditions of men for
50:14doctrine, just as they were
50:16doing in the time of Jesus,
50:19who said, you teach for
50:21doctrine the traditions of
50:22man.
50:23And the traditions of man is
50:25that your good works should
50:26atone for your evil.
50:29Just be a little bit better
50:31than you are evil and you'll
50:33be all right.
50:35But this is not what
50:36scripture tells us.
50:38God established the ways by
50:40which their sins could be
50:41covered, and it was through
50:42the offerings.
50:46It is very significant that
50:49there have been no offerings
50:50for two thousand years.
50:54Shortly after the death of
50:56Christ, with the sacking of
50:57Jerusalem, they ceased and
50:59have not begun since.
51:04They will apparently begin
51:06again in that seven-year
51:08period after the church has
51:09been taken out, and God
51:11begins again to work with
51:12Israel.
51:14It would appear that their
51:16offerings and sacrifices will
51:18begin again, for the
51:19Antichrist is going to come in
51:21in the middle of that seven-year
51:22period and cause the daily
51:24oblations and sacrifices to
51:26cease.
51:28And so they will establish a
51:30place of worship.
51:30they will institute sacrifices
51:33again during that final cycle,
51:35which God has yet to
51:36accomplish on the nation of
51:38Israel.
51:39But right now, they have no
51:41scriptural basis for the
51:43putting away of their sins.
51:47Verse 23 says,
51:49It was therefore necessary that
51:51the patterns of these things in
51:53the heavens should be purified
51:54with these, but the heavenly
51:57things themselves with better
52:01things than that of calves or
52:01In other words, this pattern,
52:03this model, was important that
52:05it be cleansed in this manner,
52:07purified.
52:08But the heavenly things
52:09themselves were better things
52:11than that of calves or goats or
52:13lambs.
52:15Verse 24 says,
52:17For Christ did not enter into the
52:18holy places that were made with
52:20hands.
52:22He didn't enter into the temple,
52:24into the holy of holies there.
52:3024 continues,
52:31For these are only figures or
52:33models of the true.
52:35But he entered into heaven
52:37itself to appear in the presence
52:39of God on our behalf.
52:45Verses 25 to 28 read on,
52:50Nor yet that he should offer
52:52himself often, as the high
52:54priest entered into the holy
52:55place every year with the blood
52:57of others.
52:58For then he must offer them
53:00suffered since the foundation of
53:01the world.
53:03But now, once in the end of the
53:05world, he has appeared to put away
53:07sin by the sacrifice of himself,
53:10as it is appointed unto men once
53:12to die, but after this the
53:14judgment.
53:15So Christ was once offered
53:17to bear the sins of many.
53:19And unto them that look to him
53:22shall he appear the second time
53:24without sin to salvation.
53:29And so Jesus came and offered
53:31himself as a sacrifice.
53:33And then he entered into heaven
53:34itself that he might appear
53:36before God for us.
53:38His sacrifice was complete.
53:40That is why it only needed to
53:43happen once, once and for all.
53:46And so it has been appointed unto
53:48man once to die after that
53:50judgment.
53:51So Christ once offered to
53:54bear our sins.
53:57Glory be to the Father and to the
54:00Son and to the Holy Spirit,
54:01as it was in the beginning, is now
54:04and ever shall be, world without
54:07end.
54:08Amen.
54:14Let us pray.
54:16O God, the King of glory,
54:18who has exalted your only Son,
54:20Jesus Christ, with great triumph
54:22unto your kingdom in heaven,
54:25we beseech you, leave us not
54:28comfortless, but send to us
54:31your Holy Spirit to comfort us
54:33and exalt us to the same place
54:36whither our Saviour Jesus Christ
54:38is gone before, who lives and
54:41reigns with you and the Holy
54:43Spirit, one God, world without end.
54:46Amen.
54:52May the Lord bless us and keep us
54:54from all evil, bringing us to
54:57everlasting life.
54:59Amen.
55:29Amen.
55:29May the Lord bless us and keep us
55:30from all?
55:30Amen.
55:48Amen.
