00:00Hour two, good to have you with us. If you want tournament talk, odyssey.com.
00:04Rewind, want to turn our attention to the Lions a little bit because
00:09there's reporting and you can do what you want with it. Once again, it's your prerogative.
00:15You know, things change, real-time info. I don't know, maybe next week we're having a different
00:19convo. Maybe tomorrow we are. In the here and now today, it is being widely reported that the Lions
00:26are done in free agency. And if I wanted to be a smartass, I'd say, well, I wasn't aware they
00:32ever started. I'm not going to do that. No, but I want to have a conversation with the people
00:39because as we sit here now, you're about a month from the draft. And if they're truly done in free
00:44agency, you know, did you get better? Do you believe Brad Holmes did his job? Did you fail
00:52free agency? I'm going to tell you something. I bust chops. I want to give the morning show
00:57credit on something. And I want to give John Jansen credit on something. Okay. Because
01:02John was really honest about something and that's, that's difficult to come by. He was asked,
01:08did the Lions fail free agency? And with no hesitation, John said yes. And I mean, that,
01:15that takes a lot for, for John to really hammer a local team, but they had a really good conversation
01:21about it because if the goal was to get better, which for me, it always is, I can't say the
01:28Lions
01:29have gotten better in any way, shape or form outside of the center position. Cade Mays is
01:37absolutely no matter what PFF says he is and is not, he's an improvement over Glasgow because
01:44Glasgow was unplayable. It was a low bar to cross, but they crossed it. Okay. But did you get better
01:50anywhere else? Re-signing Rakia Sin doesn't make you better? Trading Amik Robertson for McCreary,
02:00it's marginal at best. You didn't add any safety help. You didn't add any real D-tackle help. And
02:09your answer at edge was DJ Wanham. Who? Bob Muhammad out, bad against run, great pass rusher. Okay.
02:18Wanham comes in horrific pass rusher, good against the run. It largely becomes a wash.
02:26Where did you get better? You didn't get better in the backfield. David Montgomery gone.
02:33So again, if you're asking me, did they get better in free agency? No. Can they get better?
02:41Well, yeah. I mean, if you draft three pro bowlers, sure, you'll be better. That's a hell of a corner
02:47to paint yourself in, no? It is because your previous drafting has not been great. So a few
02:54years ago, I would say, you know what, man, the way he goes into the draft, look at all the
02:58diamonds
03:00in the rough that he finds and I'm going to get this guy and I'm going to get Amon Ra
03:04in the fourth.
03:05Like now, no, you, you kind of stink your last couple of years. So no, as far as free agency
03:11goes, yeah, it was a low bar at center, but yes, you got better. Pacheco at running back.
03:17No. And, and, and, and to make, and when free agency opened up, you weren't one of the teams
03:24out there trying to get some of the better players. You didn't even do the restructurings.
03:28You did Goff's deal in a half-assed manner, leaving 13 million more of dry powder. That 13
03:33million dollars alone could have represented, for instance, a player Rico likes that I don't,
03:38but would he make them better? Would be Bosa. Okay. Or, or I know you've had a thing for
03:44Jadavian Clowney for years. Look, the bottom line is they didn't, they didn't do anything.
03:51So I leave it to you guys. Did the Lions fail free agency? Because they can still win the division.
04:00I'm not saying, and that, that's the other thing for the people in the back. No one is saying they're
04:04bad, but if the goal is winning a Superbowl, I don't know how you're getting there having really
04:10little to no impact in free agency and largely sitting it out. You didn't restruct, you could
04:16have restructured three major contracts. You adjusted half of one. You're not all in. They're
04:25telling you they're not all in. And they'll be happy to keep taking your money. But did you go
04:32out and storm the gates to reclaim the NFC that you feel like is yours? No, most certainly you did
04:38not.
04:38So to me, this question can only be answered depending on what your standards are.
04:45And if you're saying, Oh, well we got better. Okay. If you get to 10 wins next year, that's no
04:51guarantee that you're in the playoffs because you got the nine wins and you were last in your division.
04:58So that's why my concern kicked in because you see what the other teams are doing. You see what the
05:04other teams have. And you didn't go out there to kind of counter punch that a lot of what the
05:10Rams
05:10did. Hey, our secondary was trash. We got to be better because if we fix our secondary, we can go
05:17back to the Superbowl. I don't know what you did. I want to hear from you guys. And I think
05:23it's
05:23totally okay for both things to be true where you say, look, there's a high floor for this team.
05:28They're too talented to be bad. They're not going to be bad. I don't think there's any scenario.
05:32They don't get to, let's say 10 wins, but I don't know how much more of a ceiling there is.
05:39And I'm with Rico here. You play in a highly competitive division. I'm not going to sit
05:43here and write obituaries for teams who, for instance, the common thought is, well, the bears
05:48can't do what they did. Well, okay. One problem. They have a quarterback where the sky is the limit
05:54and he's on a rookie deal. They have a superstar tight end. They have a superstar receiver.
06:00They have a superstar play caller. Look, there's more to go there. There is no more for Jared
06:07Goff. There is no more for Amon Ra. And here's bad news for you on Sam Laporta. For all of
06:13you who
06:13want to sit there priming your sock puppet that he's Travis Kelsey in his prime, he's not. In fact,
06:20even before he got hurt last year, not great. How about the year before? Not great. You're basing
06:26projection off of one really nice year in 23. And you went out and pay JMO and you went
06:34out and got Tesla. The point I'm making in all of this is it, we're not going to live
06:40in this world where the lions are the only team that gets to get better. Say that again
06:46for the people. I can't, it's tiresome, but I appreciate you wanting me to say it again.
06:49I just, I want to ask the question that if the reporting is true and they're done in free
06:54agency, that means no Bosa, no Clowney, no Batonio, no, et cetera. Rico, then, then, then
07:01the people need to answer the question. Did they do enough? Did Brad Holmes do his job?
07:07Did they fail free agency? Or, or if you feel like, look, I actually like this plan. I don't
07:16want to restructure deals. I don't want the ride to end. I actually would rather guarantee
07:22that I win nine a year than anything else. If that's how you feel, you can say it. I'm
07:29not going to yell at you. Don't ask me to like it though. Cause that's not the kind
07:34of person I am. It's not kind of fan I am. I want to win. And I just will always
07:39revert
07:39back to this, this franchise of any franchise in this city, this franchise should approach
07:46winning with a desperation, a tenacity, an urgency, a bloodlust like no other, because
07:54they are the only franchise in this town that has never not been a complete joke that has
08:01never reached the mountaintop. Not for an effing second. They've never even gotten to the dance.
08:09to then bleep themselves on the dance floor. They've never gotten there. So pardon me if
08:15I don't accept safe and sound and being good longterm. I don't care. You know how many people
08:22have died who aren't even around to see this team win anymore? All right. If to say you're
08:28on borrowed time in my world is, is please the parking meter ran out 30 years ago. Here's
08:33the thing. If the Lions ever win the Superbowl, what will be the dirtiest street afterwards?
08:38Because all the ashes of people's parents and fathers and brothers and uncles that would
08:43have poured out into, Hey, take my ashes and pour them into the parade. That's how many
08:47people have not seen this. And I've, and they've died waiting for this to happen because you're
08:52right. I look at, I look at the offensive line. It's not better. It's not. And if you can't
08:57like, Oh, we have Gibbs. If you can't open the holes for him, he can't run. If you can't
09:01protect golf, he can't go out there and do those special things. You flip over to the
09:05defense. Okay. If you can't get to the opposing quarterbacks, whether it's love, whether it's
09:10Caleb heck, whether it's Kyler Murray, well you're in trouble. I'm going to say this again
09:15too. Cause I said this last week, I'll repeat it. I think lions fans, cause I've gotten to
09:21this point. Now you talk to some people, but also watch the games. They don't value the front
09:27forward. I'm going to say it to you again. They don't value disruption. They don't value
09:32the pass rush. They value occupation. They want to occupy blockers and let their linebackers
09:39fly around. Do I think that's a flawed way to do business? Absolutely. Root and tooting,
09:44but that's how they're going to run their team. Remember a Lee McNeil didn't get signed
09:48where Kelvin Shepard was the DC. He was signed under Aaron Glenn. This is a different program.
09:54And I think it's highly flawed, but their off season matches it. I mean, your best D tackle,
10:01you let them walk. Roy Lopez wasn't expensive, but you let them go. Why? You don't value it.
10:08Muhammad had the 11 sacks. Your flipping attitude is we'd rather have a guy better against the run
10:13and, and what? And do what in, in, in a pass rush? Nothing. So I'm just telling you,
10:20that's the other thing. Look, we can talk about all these free agents we'd like, or trades we'd
10:25like to see. The reality is that they have a very distinct way they want to do this. And I
10:32think
10:32it's pretty clear. They're not going to spend up front. And I think Lee McNeil will be cut after
10:37the season. I don't think he'll be around. No. Oh, they paid Aiden. You got to pay somebody,
10:43but I think it's going to be Aiden and friends. I really think that's their plan
10:47because there's no excuse for a team at this current stage of their arc to not. And again,
10:53I don't think any of these guys are perfect players, but that doesn't preclude me from saying,
10:57Hey, tip of the cap. You got a little better. If Rico got his guy, Clowney, are you better?
11:01Or, or got his guy, Bosa? You're better. Yeah, you are. How do you not do that? Those are one
11:07year
11:07deals. Yeah, those aren't, it's not like you went to free agency and gave somebody four at 200.
11:12Bro, their one year deals, incentive laden, that you're probably, your base salary is around four
11:17or five million. Let's be real about it. Clowney ain't turning nothing down. So if the Lions are
11:22truly done in free agency, which is what reporting is saying, what's your view on it? Did Brad Holmes do
11:30his job? Did this team get better? Or as John Jansen put it, did they fail free agency? 248-539
11:39-9797.
11:41Let's have a convo about it. A little bit of football. I know we're in the middle of the
11:44tournament. Red Wings are going to get prime billing tomorrow. Lord knows.
