Can we say that about the biggest stories in sports?
Transcript
00:04David, hit the music.
00:15I'm pumped up.
00:16You weren't here yesterday, so we didn't get our dose of Can We Say That.
00:20This is good.
00:21Don't act like you missed me.
00:22I did.
00:23I like this segment.
00:25All right.
00:25Well, you know what?
00:26But fresh off the news that Otto just gave us, can we say the Bears secondary is taking
00:34a bigger hit than the Lions secondary losing the corner they just brought in in Kobe?
00:40I mean, the safety they brought in in Kobe Bryant.
00:43No, but it ain't good.
00:45I mean, they lost their safety duo last year.
00:48They replaced him.
00:49You go get Kobe Bryant.
00:50He's out four to six months.
00:52That's, I think it's, first of all, Lion fan needs to stop being the victim and doing
00:58this whole, it's only us.
00:59I mean, Laramie Tunsil blew out yesterday.
01:01Kobe Bryant is now gone.
01:03Carolina lost their first round picnic escort.
01:05Hello, substation.
01:06Noted.
01:08Listen, this is why it's so difficult.
01:11You don't want to expose players to physical contact and to injury early.
01:17But if you don't, they're just going to get hurt when the season starts.
01:20But yeah, Bears have a problem on their hands.
01:23Just like the Lions have a problem on theirs.
01:24I would definitely say no, because you lost.
01:26You don't have both of your safeties.
01:28You don't have a starting corner from your lineup last.
01:31Well, DJ Reba, he's dealing with an injury.
01:34And then Enos Raikstraw was supposed to be somebody that you look forward to.
01:38And Dan Campbell says, it's not having the best camp so far.
01:41So he's AI.
01:42I don't know if he's AI.
01:44So no.
01:47Yeah, I don't think there's any way when you're missing three-fourths of your secondary
01:52that you're in a worse spot than the Bears because they just lost the safety.
01:55Right.
01:55And then, look, I think the Bears are in a worse spot overall because regression is going
02:00to come calling.
02:00There's no world you're going to be plus 800 in turnovers again.
02:04Now, can that be offset by Caleb taking the next step and yada, yada, yada?
02:08But that would be my biggest concern for the Bears.
02:11That turnover luck is going to regress to the mean.
02:16Michael, this one's for you.
02:18He used my full name.
02:19I'm in real trouble.
02:20No, you guys can answer as well.
02:22But can we say that George Lombard Jr. is legit?
02:28Not yet.
02:30It's the same thing as Max Clark.
02:31I'm not going to do that to these.
02:34It's not fair to a young player because here's what happens.
02:36Go watch him take the Braves and turn him into a pinata.
02:39I know.
02:39Look, the video catches up.
02:43It's one thing to have a minor league scouting report.
02:46But once you see somebody live after that first 50 at-bats, the league adjusts.
02:51And then only the truly special ones can counterpunch right away.
02:56Not ready to say it.
02:58All I know is he's better than Anthony Volpe, and I'll live with it.
03:02No, I'm not going to say that, but I can understand why you would, Rico.
03:05You just saw him.
03:06Destroy your team.
03:07He looked really good at doing that.
03:10It's sort of like Mike with Justin Herbert in that bowl game where he's like,
03:13I don't really think that he's going to be that great.
03:16It was a bowl game, but he saw it.
03:18Exhilarating 7-6 games.
03:19So it's hard to look past it.
03:20Yes, exactly.
03:21The Red Box Bowl.
03:23Yeah, I think it's too early to say it yet.
03:25He's looked great, but you've got to give him more time than just like a week in the majors.
03:30Can we say we do pay running backs, but just not as much as you pay regular players, other players,
03:40like the wide receivers in the NFL?
03:42No, it's not for me.
03:45Now, the Lions did a nice job where it has team-friendly elements to it, and they can open up
03:49a little cap space.
03:51I'm just never making that commitment two years early to a running back.
03:55It's just not how I would do it.
03:57I'm not mad about something that we all knew was going to happen.
04:00Like, there's no point in being angry.
04:04But this is, look, yeah, I, along with anyone else, you've got to reach acceptance phase.
04:10This is just who they are.
04:11This is what they're going to do.
04:13They're going to draft.
04:14They're going to fall in love with their own people, even though Dan Campbell said they can't fall in love
04:17with their own people.
04:18And they're going to try to sign them all early and try to do team-friendly deals.
04:22That's what they're going to try to do.
04:23I'm not going to get mad about it.
04:25And now, I hope Gibbs carries the ball four billion times this year.
04:29Three running backs got paid last week while you guys were gone.
04:32Yeah, in reality, no, you don't pay.
04:35In a dynasty league for fantasy, yes, you pay because they're going to get numbers.
04:39But this isn't a dynasty league.
04:41This is the NFL, and you have to build a roster.
04:44So, no.
04:46I actually do think you pay running backs now, and it depends on what it is because I think that's
04:50the vogue thing in the NFL right now with GMs.
04:52Is it Bijan?
04:54Is it Saquon?
04:55Is it Gibbs?
04:56Is it A-chan?
04:57Is it guys that can catch 70, 80 passes out of the backfield and be a running back?
05:01Because they're essentially your number three receiver and your starting running back in one package.
05:05But you know what I'm going to counter with.
05:07None of these teams that have paid their running backs big dinero outside of the Eagles, who had the best
05:12O-line in the league, by the way, have won a Super Bowl.
05:15It's just, Paul is right that there's a bit of this return to run the ball, RTB.
05:21The problem is the teams that are winning the Super Bowl are running the ball with poverty people.
05:27They're not doing it with $20 million backs.
05:30No, what's funny is those three guys all got paid.
05:34It's like, oh, the running backs, they're finally getting paid.
05:36And then also that week, Zay Flowers got paid and got paid more than all three of them.
05:42And I would not say that, oh, he's a make-or-break type of wide receiver.
05:46He's good.
05:48I like Zay Flowers.
05:49I mean, I do too.
05:50But yeah, he was like, oh, that's cute.
05:52You guys got some money.
05:53If he had a real quarterback, he'd really explode.
05:56I think it's just a market for the type of running back it is.
05:59Because if Josh Jacobs was getting paid, I wouldn't max him out because he doesn't do anything for you in
06:03the passing game.
06:04That part I agree with, Paul.
06:06I just think we've reached a point you need three running backs.
06:10Can we say that despite the NBA coming out with five games on Christmas Day, Spurs at Knicks, Heat at
06:19Celtics, 76ers at Lakers, Thunder at Timberwolves, and the Nuggets at the Warriors,
06:24can we say that the NFL will still beat them on Christmas Day, Packers at Bears, Bills at Broncos, Rams
06:31at Seahawks?
06:32Yeah, they're going to take a folding chair to their spine.
06:35Again, the NFL has taken whatever they've wanted.
06:38Oh, the NBA is Christmas Day.
06:41No, it's not.
06:42Oh, Saturday's for college football play.
06:44No, it's not.
06:45The NFL is just going to steamroll whoever's in their way.
06:49It takes up 80% of the oxygen in the American sports landscape.
06:54Yeah, and it's interesting how they do this every year for Christmas.
06:57They're going to put the matchup from the NBA Finals.
06:59One thing, this isn't the NBA Finals.
07:02This is Christmas, so you're not going to have the intensity.
07:04You're not going to have what's on the line on Christmas Day that you had in June.
07:09It's not the same.
07:14You know what, Davey?
07:15You may be onto something because at that point come Christmas Day, those NFL games will have more at stake.
07:22You possibly could be looking at teams trying to lock up a division.
07:26Okay.
07:27Totally correct.
07:27Paul?
07:28Well, yeah, I mean, the NBA is in trouble on Christmas Day because the NFL wants to take it.
07:34And unfortunately, like Mike said, they take what they want and they get away with it.
07:38And they shouldn't.
07:39It should be the NBA's day, but that's not how the NFL works.
07:45Can we say the video that we all needed to see, but I don't think we have?
07:50Kirk Cousins and Max Crosby getting into a fight.
07:53I don't think Kirk really wanted that.
07:57I diddly-do, neighbor.
08:01I wanted to know who initiated.
08:03I mean, there's so many questions for me.
08:06I also would like to know what language did Kirk Cousins use because we know what Crosby was using.
08:12I don't believe any of it.
08:13I think these two team leaders saw how the team was performing in training camp and said, we got to
08:19get some hype.
08:19They're not looking like a team and they faked an argument because Kirk Cousins is not that type of guy.
08:26He's not.
08:27Listen here, Mr. Meany Pants.
08:31Dadgummit!
08:32Stop that!
08:33I do not approve of that language.
08:36What do you mean you don't like pleated pants?
08:38If you hear that one more time, I'm going to get miffed.
08:41Just letting you know now.
08:42I'm offended you don't respect Kohl's cash.
08:45All right.
08:45Just keep it rolling.
08:46Wait, was this fine in Kohl's cash?
08:49Can we say that the Purdue Athletic Director, Tommy McClellan, may have said the dumbest thing ever?
08:58If you don't want to win championships, I'm paraphrasing, go to Indiana.
09:05Cuts it.
09:06Kurt Cignetti has his ring.
09:11Buddy, I'm leaving it to you.
09:13They asked Cignetti about it either yesterday or today, and he just didn't react, moved on to the next question.
09:25I mean, do they play this year or have we ruined that rivalry too?
09:29No, I think they play this year.
09:29Okay, they're going to win 100-2.
09:33Cignetti will go out and start taking a pipe to band members.
09:38That was the dumbest thing you could ever say.
09:41Yeah, I think Indiana fired back with something on their social media.
09:45Basically, Purdue doesn't win championships.
09:48We Googled it.
09:50That is the final game of the Big Ten schedule, November 28th.
09:53The old oaken bucket.
09:56Kirk Cignetti is going to be on the sideline dressed like Darth Vader petting a hairless cat.
09:59Yes.
10:00As they destroy.
10:01Coach, we're up by 50.
10:03More.
10:03Again.
10:04More.
10:05Run it again.
10:05Oh, it's in Bloomington, so you know, yeah.
10:07Oh, dear.
10:08Flea flicker.
10:09Somewhere Barry Odom is knocking on the door of his AD's office like, what were you thinking?
10:16Look what you did, you little jerk.
10:20Can we say that the Boston Red Sox are the best team in the American League right now?
10:28Hold on now.
10:29You threw a little caveat in there.
10:30Right now?
10:31Sure.
10:34Look, I still.
10:35That if you had to bet on somebody to represent the American League in the World Series.
10:39No, until I see that Aaron Judge and Bellinger and Stanton don't come back, it's still the Yankees.
10:45Or the Rays.
10:46Then it would be maybe the Sox.
10:49But I'm not ready to do that.
10:50But when you say right now.
10:52Right now.
10:52And the players I listed and the 130 home runs they're missing, I could say yes.
10:57But Judge may or may not come back.
10:59He'll be back.
11:00What are you talking about?
11:01It's a Detroit Tigers.
11:02How could you not believe?
11:03Okay.
11:05I try.
11:06Paul.
11:07I still think it's the Rays.
11:09I think they're the best overall team.
11:11The best mix of talent.
11:12Of course.
11:13Florida bias.
11:14I'm a Marlins fan.
11:16I know.
11:16I don't care about the Rays.
11:17First of all, I would not admit that to anybody.
11:20Okay.
11:21I'm a Marlins fan.
11:23That's brutal.
11:24David, I got time for one more.
11:26Yes.
11:27Tell it, David.
11:27Okay.
11:28Can we say that it may be time for Tarek Scoble to walk away from the microphone?
11:34Yeah.
11:35Please.
11:35Please.
11:36Oh, golly.
11:37I hope Detroit said that bit.
11:38Dude, you just showed up at your new destination.
11:41Why are you talking about the Tiger?
11:43Stop.
11:44Stop.
11:45I'm glad he's gone.
11:46It's made the Tigers more likable.
11:48I couldn't take anymore.
11:49But he is just LA.
11:52He's yours now.
11:53Enjoy.
11:54Boy, I do.
11:56People are like, well, you know, he gets paid to throw balls, not talk in front of a microphone.
12:00I was like, you say no comment or, you know, I'm with a new team now, guys.
12:04I don't want to talk about Detroit.
12:05Just do it.
12:05I'm going to consume it every week.
12:07Have an empty chair represent you.
12:09Just leave.
12:11Like, you can't think Scott Boris is happy about all this now, or he just refuses to stop talking all
12:16of a sudden.
12:17I really don't.
12:18You know what, Paul?
12:19Oh, I don't want to know what Scott Boris thinks.
12:21I don't care anymore.
12:25Excellent work.
12:26Yeah, I'm just tired of it.
12:28All right.
12:29That's going to be said at 97-1.
