00:00all right so yesterday near the end of our show all hell broke loose
00:04we were in the middle of going over scoobal trade proposals the first of
00:09seven put together by jim boden and about 30 seconds into gator
00:13analyzing proposal number one miles garrett gets traded from the
00:17cleveland browns to the los angeles rams for what we found
00:20to be jared verst a first jared verse a first
00:24a second and a third round pick but the second third round picks are in
00:28consecutive multiple years they're moving down the road
00:30yeah future seven future 28 and 29 yeah so the lions have made deals like this
00:34but they usually they they were the browns i mean it was
00:37stafford for a golf for two first round for
00:42they both both the lines and browns have traded an established player
00:45a veteran beloved well maybe not always beloved by detroit fans
00:50certainly we know that uh but well established to star players in their
00:54towns to the rams for a former first round pick named jared
01:00and the rams got a first second and third the lines got two first
01:03they have been the browns in this scenario and that trade actually
01:09it's worked out for both teams uh and you know we'll see how it works out for
01:14the lions in the end what does it mean for detroit while
01:17getting out of the nfc just got harder because the rams went from being the
01:21favorite in the nfc to to more of the favorite is is is this story was kind of
01:26unpacked the rams were really sweating this off season getting their
01:30quarterback of the future and when they were able to get ty
01:33simpson apparently that for them their approach was now we
01:36don't need to draft a quarterback in the next couple of years because we got
01:39our quarterback so we don't need this first round pick as much as we might
01:42otherwise need it but of course more than really what it means for the lions
01:47in the nfc and the here and then now is it launched a debate about brad holmes
01:51approach that whole thing got rekindled as we expected the moment the trade
01:56went down there are people that want brad holmes to go big there are people
02:00that want brad holmes to find a all-in win now move the rams have done it and
02:05famously won a super bowl other teams have not done it and also won super
02:08bowls uh the strange thing is you look at philly the year the philly didn't do
02:12it they won the super bowl this past year philly went and got jalen
02:15phillips they didn't win the super bowl and it's it's not a straight line
02:19correlation but it's an aggressive move and people are um
02:24people are desperate to see a championship in detroit and i completely
02:28understand it it makes sense we want our teams to make it to the mountaintop
02:32and we can't we've we flirted with it here a little bit of late
02:35with a number of our teams in fact lions pistons and tigers have all rewarded
02:39the fan base with playoff appearances uh and the first time you get in it's just
02:44kind of fun and fresh and new and you're all right it's a good start
02:48but after you've done it a couple times it's like okay what about the
02:51championship um and as we discussed yesterday there
02:55probably wasn't a reasonable path to miles garrett have you given that any
03:00further thought was there is there a reasonable path that the lions could have
03:02acquired miles garrett now the only thing they could have done is offer
03:06multiple first round picks that's the way that i see it um
03:10um and i don't think that gets it done because i think cleveland wanted to get
03:14a young player under control uh of substance and the lions just didn't
03:20they don't have that guy because you know everyone else they're ready to
03:24resign here unless you wanted to and i guess the problem is that even the
03:28class that were guys you can sign them now again they're going to be free agents
03:32at the end of the year or you can sign them now and they're also hurt
03:35yeah so it's tough to do that so you gotta go i mean you could give him
03:39gibbs but gibbs is doing extension soon and they wanted so you got to go to the
03:43next class which is the terry and arnold class
03:46and terry and arnold isn't going to get it done not like jared verse so you'd have
03:50to overpay on the on the draft compensation and
03:53could they have gotten it done by trading a couple of first round picks and a
03:57second round pick could they have done that
03:59to get them and they maybe could have maybe it's a lot of draft you have to
04:03reported today that the the browns love jared verse and that they really
04:08desperately wanted jared verse and teams will typically take the player that
04:11they had no one has established over a draft pick but sure um and i get it i
04:16tend to agree with that so i don't think i really don't think the lions had a
04:22chance in this which is it ends up being too bad because the way that works out
04:26with the money and all that um it ends up being isn't it kind of a doable
04:31contract for both sides because of the timing of it like what do you mean miles
04:35garrett what's it what's the cap number for
04:38for the rams now because it's nowhere near what they redid his contract
04:43to make him more tradable yeah which was sort of an underreported story i feel
04:48like over the last few weeks because cleveland
04:51did this but the cleveland also said at the time
04:53that well when they were doing it that or were going to do it
04:56that they weren't trading them they had no intention of trading them until the rams
05:00came and said all right how about this they're like well okay we'll do that
05:03miles garrett's cap hit for the rams this year is 8.14 million then it goes to 16 21 42
05:0949
05:10so pretty doable yeah right and cleveland ends up what's their uh what's their hit
05:17on this with the dead money uh but i have to go back and see it did you see a
05:23number somewhere i didn't see a number i thought that i actually did see a number
05:26and i didn't think it was that that bad uh that they could actually handle this but
05:30regardless the number is is what the rams are going to pay and it's totally doable
05:35so would you have been willing to give up the draft capital that would trump
05:39giving up draft capital and jared verse apparently the cap hit this year for them
05:43is 21.374 million so i'm sorry so you'd have to you'd have to
05:50kang do you think that there is it was an accessible way for the lions to reasonably
05:54make this trade now i don't think so because the player they would want to return is aiden
05:58hutchinson and i think cap numbers just would not allow that to happen so other than that
06:03there's no other avenue unless they were just in love with an injured brian branch and injured
06:07sam laporta you know what i mean like and then obviously you got to throw in picks so i don't
06:12think there was a reasonable path to go get miles garrett i'm not even sure they would love
06:16aiden hutchinson given the contract well that's what i'm saying like that contract is a big part
06:20of the way but the player itself they obviously love aiden hutchinson but the contract numbers
06:24just wouldn't make it work i don't think so fans want the move they want they want to be able
06:29to
06:29find a player that's worthy of throwing first round picks at and acquire them in trade so there's a few
06:38things here one is believe it or not brad holmes actually does want to win a super bowl just as
06:42much
06:42as the fans do uh and and i don't think you know you might not like his approach but he
06:50might want
06:50it more given his livelihood is dependent on it his his job is as a professional is dependent on it
06:57there is sort of a sense of desperation that's setting in for fans that i don't want any of our
07:02gms to assume the desperation of some of the callers that we get and if you think about it deep
07:09down my guess is you probably don't want him to be that desperate but that doesn't mean you can't
07:17make a big move from somebody outside of house they have made big moves but their big moves have been
07:24re-signing their own guys justin rogers put together a list of the 20 million dollar players
07:30that the lions have and it's actually more than the rams now a couple guys being hurt you know makes
07:37it
07:38really difficult because you're getting nothing out of kirby joseph and lee mcneil came off that
07:42injury and we'll see if he returns to form i hope those guys don't turn out to be waste of
07:47money
07:49but brad holmes approach is pretty clear that primarily he thinks if they stay in the mix here
07:57long enough they will eventually break through if they have a team that is considered amongst the best
08:03in the in the nfl one of the better rosters in the nfl and it is a damn good roster
08:09that the lions have
08:11that eventually they will break through and if but but and this is something i don't want to get
08:19misinterpreted at all because i tend to defend brad holmes against the criticism that he won't make a
08:23move like this or that he's doing it wrong i tend to i defend him against the the people call
08:29and say
08:30he's doing it wrong i'm gonna go back to one of my basic principles in sports
08:37you cannot go through life with hard and fast rules and you shouldn't go through life with hard
08:41and fast rules because you start narrowing the field of what makes sense i get the sense with brad
08:51holmes that he is waiting until that that right move comes along and then
08:59he will he should and will pull the trigger and i'll give you an example i don't know if there
09:04was ever a greater trade of the right move at the right time than rasheed wallace
09:09here you have a dominant player who through circumstance became available and the pistons
09:15were able to facilitate a three-team trade that got him not just rasheed but mike james and really
09:21didn't cut dramatically into their core and it was just perfect timing that that player became available
09:28if brad holmes i think if he is smart and i do think he's smart i think he's very smart
09:38i think you you have you are seeking at all times for that perfect move the right guy at the
09:44right
09:45time for the right price and if he's not i think that's foolish but i think he's pretty patient waiting
09:54for this move to make itself available or try to he's trying to well there's a fine line between
09:58patience and and stubbornness and and i don't know where he's at i tend to think it's more patience
10:04what he's what he's preaching here and waiting for that right player to come along i don't think
10:08miles garrett was the right player based on how they were operating this offseason then you know
10:13you can you can argue i guess the other side said well they shouldn't have operated that way and
10:16just go get the guy but whatever i i don't think that's it and as i'm looking at this team
10:23you know defensive end edge rusher is not the pressing need not right now for this team i mean
10:28it'd be cool it'd be great yeah it's it's great but i mean they did spend a second round pick
10:33on an
10:33edge rusher who i'm i'm encouraged a lot by by derrick moore and what he can provide um they get
10:40guys
10:40that are they're healthy they did sign uh want them as a free agent and you know does that make
10:46it for miles garrett no miles garrett is all pro he's amazing he's the best in the league at what
10:50he does um but because they've kind of fortified that area up there i'm looking elsewhere and this
10:57is what i think that lions fans should focus their attention on now don't forget the shiny thing that's
11:02that's miles garrett what's the real need on this team and whether you think it's cornerback or
11:07safety or linebacker whatever you think it is defensive tackle if you think that's that's the
11:14thing to focus on then look for the player that fits that position and then ask yourself would you
11:19give up the first round pick for that player or first round pick and more to acquire that player
11:24you just that's that's the move that i think we're going to look at moving towards the trade
11:29deadline if the lions are good and i think they're going to be good this year and you want to
11:32add
11:34what's going to make sense for them to f them picks what's the position player if you don't
11:39you don't actually have to say the player but give me the position yeah there's a screaming need
11:44where you throw a couple of first round picks at it and fix it i think i know where we're
11:48going i
11:48think we're still going to get edge rusher you think so i think we still get edge rusher
11:53two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven you did say something though that i i want to
11:58circle back to there but we're up against the break let's take it and get to your phone calls and
12:02feedback can they win it brad holmes way can they win it brad holmes way it's carson anderson 97 one
