Did the Lions put themselves in this position?
Transcript
00:00Doug Arsh, Scott Anderson, 97.1.
00:04Okay, look, it was a depressing night down at LCA.
00:09Hopefully this season they can dig down deep and find something they haven't been able to find
00:14for one, two, three years here and rally at the end of the schedule and make the postseason.
00:21But I think two guys that are more optimistic than many are not very optimistic this morning.
00:27But I'm not giving up.
00:30I give it up.
00:30But the trajectory of this season and this organization certainly doesn't look great right now.
00:37But we got the Lions.
00:41Lions, I would describe the Lions as in good shape.
00:43They got a bunch of good players, but people want to see them make some sort of some big investment,
00:50right?
00:51And got to understand Brad Holmes went with the Lions Collective
00:58and did a, it was kind of a tell-all.
01:02It was really, really insightful into what he is thinking and what drives their philosophy.
01:09And, you know, I give Holmes credit for doing it.
01:14I give the guys credit for asking really good questions and, you know, being able to sort of
01:23really get to the crux of what the general manager who makes these decisions, what drives those decisions.
01:30So that is Jeff Iafrady, Justin Rogers, Colton Pouncey, and the Birchie Kid all in on this.
01:36So well done, guys.
01:39And we'll start with the signings that they did make.
01:44So many people, understandably, us included, really everybody, wanted to see an investment in the offensive line.
01:51And that happened, maybe not with high-end signings, but with signings that clearly Brad Holmes believes in.
02:00And we'll start with Cade Mays.
02:02When you watched Cade Mays, who's not the top center on the board, but when you watch Cade Mays,
02:08what did you see and how can he help this team?
02:10Here's what Brad Holmes had to say.
02:51Here's what Brad Holmes had to say.
03:13Here's what Brad Holmes had to say.
03:51Here's what Brad Holmes had to say.
03:54Eh.
03:56Honestly, I watched the whole 52-minute thing yesterday, and great job for the guys for landing the interview
04:02and sitting down with them and they asked them some tough questions.
04:05And I didn't love the responses I got from Brad Holmes and the constant use of the word constraints and
04:13all this.
04:13And, hey, guys, we have a budget.
04:15We'll get to all that.
04:16Yeah, it just relates to Cade Mays.
04:21Cade Mays is a quality center, and I think they liked it because, just cut it down, because it was
04:28budget-friendly.
04:29That's why they liked it.
04:30And he's a good player.
04:32Sure.
04:32Who's not going to like that?
04:34Hey, we can get him cheap, and he's actually an upgrade over what we had, which is what we always
04:37talk about.
04:38It's just logic.
04:40But the whole attitude about, you know, we'll let some more sound play out.
04:45Yes.
04:46So, there's a few things here.
04:48And, again, this is insight into what he is thinking.
04:50Okay?
04:50You don't have to agree with it.
04:51But when he said, for what he has shown and how long he has played the position, if you look
04:56at Cade Mays' career, his first two years he played guard.
04:58He switched over to center the last two years.
05:01And I think he got more starts this year than he did the year before.
05:05Yes, he did.
05:06He went from five starts at center.
05:08No, he went from eight starts at center to 12 starts at center.
05:11He thinks the trajectory at that position has a lot of upside.
05:15And, you know, I go back to something I say a lot, because when you're the general manager and you're
05:20trying to get to the mountaintop, whatever your philosophy is, you better be right.
05:26You better be right.
05:27So, what they've invested here in him, it's not a lot this year.
05:31He's not much of a hit on the cap this year.
05:34In fact, he's a minimal hit on the cap this year.
05:36But he will be in the future if, you know, there's no outs, if they move on from him, whatever.
05:41But, you know, he sees something there that he thinks, and again, you better be right, that he can get
05:49better from what he has been because he hasn't played the position a ton, thinks there's a lot of upside
05:56there.
05:56Now, as far as, you know, when you mentioned the top guy and what he gets at Tiger Linderbaum, got
06:00the massive contract, and he's like, okay, the number two guy, the gap between number two and three and four,
06:07the gap in what they got paid compared to the gap between them as players, we got, he makes it
06:14sound like he thinks he got the best value for another center.
06:16For what they're paying and what they're getting, he thinks that, you know, that was a good value signing for
06:22them that improves him at the position.
06:24And maybe improves him a lot if they're right about his upside at the spot.
06:29So, Hank Frehley, you're on the job.
06:31Let's see if that's the case.
06:32Yeah, I don't have any problem with the Cade May signing.
06:35I think that's the golden signing that they had.
06:38Then there's Larry Borum, all right, the tackle.
06:41And there was much discussion about, you know, is he going to start for you?
06:46And he, anyway, here's what he had to say about Larry Borum.
07:05He's first, he's about to be, let's go, he knows, he knows.
07:14And he, he's about to be, let's go.
07:24He's about to be, let's go, let's go.
07:52Okay.
07:56So what he had to say there provides a little insight on what they think he's going to be and
08:00what they think he's going to do.
08:02Because he's basically said we like him a lot as a right tackle.
08:05He's played all over, but he thinks his best film is at right tackle.
08:09Lions have a right tackle.
08:11Yeah, one of the best right tackles in football.
08:13And that right tackle, he didn't commit yesterday to him moving to left tackle.
08:18But when you love Larry Borum at right tackle, and maybe not so much the other positions that he's played.
08:26It says to me, we're going to put this guy at right tackle.
08:28We're moving Penny Sewell to left tackle.
08:30This isn't earth-shattering analysis, but that seems obviously to be the plan.
08:35And they think they got a guy who can be good at that spot.
08:40Now, they also said he'd never say never with Decker, but there's been no discussions with Decker coming back.
08:47Yeah, I think what you said about Larry Borum tells me either what you said or it tells me that
08:52they're still looking at tackle in the draft with a first-round pick.
08:58And if they really value, say, two or three offensive tackles, and one of those guys is there at 17,
09:05that they will draft that person to compete with Borum for the spot at right tackle.
09:09I think it makes all the sense in the world to move Penny Sewell to the left side.
09:14He can clearly play the left side.
09:16He played it in college, and he played it at such a high level that everybody thought he was going
09:19to be a top-ten pick, and he was.
09:21And then they moved him to the right side.
09:22No question was, could he play right?
09:23Yes, he can play right tackle.
09:24But because of what he had to say about Borum, I mean, how are we not to draw the conclusion
09:30that Sewell's going to play left tackle?
09:32At least to start, you're going to have Borum at right tackle unless the guy that drafted 17.
09:38If the guy that drafted 17 is just strictly a left tackle, then to keep Penny Sewell at the right
09:42side, Borum becomes depth, and then you've got Monroe Freeling playing at left tackle or whomever.
09:50Right, and he kept talking about creating competition, and that's what they try to do.
09:59Borum may be your starting tackle, may not be your starting tackle.
10:03His point is, if we play him, he's going to be at the position that he's most adept to playing
10:09right tackle.
10:10Would you agree that either Borum's going to start or we're going to have a rookie starting?
10:14Yes.
10:15Okay.
10:16Hundo.
10:17Hundo.
10:19248-539-9797.
10:21All right, the financial constraints and his building philosophy.
10:25What he had to say about those things, we will get to today at 1147.
10:29Brad Holm speaking with the Detroit Lions Collective yesterday.
10:32We are bringing you the highlights of that, and we will get to those things next here on 97.1.
