02 May - National Afternoon forecast presented by Honor Criswick.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon. It's a long bank holiday weekend, so yes, I'm afraid there
00:06is rain in the forecast, but some much needed rain for many areas after a very dry April.
00:11Now for this afternoon, the bulk of the rain is going to be across the south west and southern
00:15parts of Wales, where it could start to turn a little bit heavy later on. Also a fair few
00:20showers across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland, these could also turn heavy at
00:25times, but actually across the bulk of the country, northern, central parts of England
00:30and across the far southeast, it should be mostly dry. The best of the sunshine likely
00:35across the far east and southeast, and this is where we'll see the best of the temperatures.
00:39We could potentially reach 23, maybe 24 degrees by this afternoon, but for most, particularly
00:45across the north, it is going to start to feel that bit cooler.
00:49Now through into this evening, we'll continue to see this heavy band of rain push its way
00:53northwards. Do take care if you're out and about travelling, as it could cause some localised
00:57flooding, some difficult travelling conditions, and it's likely this rain could turn quite
01:02heavy, if not thundery at times, as it continues to push its way northwards. Turning a little
01:06drier across the south by the time we reach the morning, though plenty of cloud around,
01:11and mostly dry across the far north of Scotland with some clearer skies, but only really across
01:15Shetland and Orkney, where we could just about dip below freezing, because actually for
01:19the large majority of us with the cloud and the added rain, that means things are going
01:23to be fairly mild overnight. Many towns and cities across parts of the south not really
01:27dropping much past 11 to 12 degrees.
01:31So quite an unsettled start across northern parts of England to start the day. Eventually,
01:35rain will ease away as this system moves into the North Sea, but likely remaining fairly cloudy,
01:41perhaps brightening up a little more across parts of the south, though this is likely where
01:45we'll see plenty of showers. And overall across the country, it is just going to be that bit
01:49cloudier and feel that bit cooler as well. Still fairly warm in the sunshine across parts of the
01:55south, highs reaching around 19 degrees Celsius here, but just about pushing into 10 to 11 degrees
02:00Celsius across northern parts of Scotland. And for all by Sunday, there is going to be quite a big
02:06temperature difference compared to what we'll see this afternoon, a good five to seven degrees
02:10lower compared to this afternoon for many areas. And that is the theme as we head into next week.
02:16Things are gradually going to be turning cooler, high pressure situated out to the west, bringing
02:20us this northerly flow into next week and gradually things turning cooler with a bit more of a northerly
02:26air stream. It's only really across the far south by Wednesday that really holds on to that warmer weather.
02:32But actually for the bank holiday, it's only really across Scotland where they've just about reached
02:36that cooler air. So things feeling a bit chillier here, but actually for elsewhere in the sunshine,
02:42it'll still feel relatively warm, just not quite as warm as it has done of recent days.
02:46And in terms of bank holiday weather, it's actually fairly decent. Lots of dry weather, even some
02:50sunny spells at times. A fair few showers across parts of the south and southwest,
02:54also quite a few showers just pushing into northern Scotland, turning a little heavy at times.
02:59So apart from the fact they'll be feeling that little bit cooler, actually there's going to be plenty
03:03of dry weather around on Monday. As I say, things gradually turning cooler and more unsettled into
03:08next week. But if you want more information on that, don't forget you can always subscribe.
