After days of severe storms in the Midwest and Plains, the risk for large hail and flooding downpours has moved into eastern Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Transcript
00:07A little too close for comfort there for some as lightning and thunder come crashing down
00:13in Meridian, Mississippi last night. Pretty nasty stuff. And this footage from a familiar
00:19last name here. A Laubach. We've been talking to Tony Laubach quite a bit. Pretty wild shot
00:27there with that bright flash of lightning shot by Liz Laubach there in Meridian, Mississippi.
00:32Let's take a look at what's going on. This same area, especially southern parts of Mississippi,
00:37are going to be facing some severe weather. We've been dealing with big hail. Large hail
00:40is the main motivation for us to be adding the bump up to a two out of four on the
00:45four-tiered
00:46severe threat index there. A moderate risk. Large hail, the biggest issue, but also flash
00:51flooding, damaging wind. A concern here with this setup as well. East Texas, Louisiana,
00:56southern Mississippi, ongoing and into the evening and the early part of the overnight
01:00as well. Storms will rumble deep into the night farther south. So Shreveport, Jackson,
01:04New Orleans, Mobile, Montgomery, some welcome rain showers into Atlanta. We'll have some
01:08thunderstorms this evening and into the night into Austin and Houston as well. Leaving
01:12a shower or two in Lubbock, Texas. But there's fire danger farther north up into areas north
01:17of Lubbock early in the forecast into the evening as well. So here we are at 1130 p.m. tonight.
01:23The hail threat will begin to decline, but the drenching downpours will continue late tonight.
01:28Some drought relief scoots east through south Georgia. Then we kind of re-rack it, getting
01:32ready for Thursday with a new round of showers. Some thunderstorms, not much of a severe threat.
01:37In fact, Thursday is going to be the day with the lowest severe weather threat among any day
01:41in the past seven days. Friday, we do see a return of some severe risk east of I-35, near
01:48I-10.
01:48And some of these storms approaching Katy and Houston, Texas, near Corpus Christi. They're
01:53going to be a little boisterous there with a gusty wind potential, generally running along
01:57I-10. It's kind of almost like a March weather pattern here. Colder air for many. The severe
02:02threat squashed down to the Gulf Coast. So it's like a late February, early March thunderstorm
02:06risk area for Friday. So again, we'll take it day by day. Here's Thursday. Thursday, we have
02:11those drenching areas of rain, but it's cooler and more stable. So the severe risk is very
02:16limited on Thursday. Friday, we're going to be dealing with the better chance for severe
02:22near the Gulf Coast and also into south central Texas. You'll notice there is also that snow
02:27potential there into the Colorado Rockies down to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We'll
02:32be keeping an eye out for that as well. Some areas 6 to 12 inches of snow above 8,000
02:37feet.
02:38So we're not done with that. But Friday, this is when this next front begins to push south
02:43right along the I-10. And there is this stormy corridor where there will be one final shot
02:49for severe storms. It's here for the week, Friday. Kind of an underwhelming map here.
02:54Some risk, but we want you to be aware of the damaging wind, hail, and flash flood potential
02:58from San Antonio to Victoria, Houston, east to New Orleans. And all the while, this is meaningful
03:04drought relief here. We're looking at 1 to 2 inches of rain in the light green. That's
03:08great news there in Atlanta and Charleston, where we've had such a disappointing amount
03:12of rain, almost none in some of these communities through the first 27 days of the month. We've
03:17seen some on the 28th, but we're going to get a little more as the month comes to a close
03:21at 2 to 4 inches farther west there, areas south of I-20 in Texas, and also into areas like
03:26Louisiana and Mississippi.
