00:00One of the intriguing teams to me is over the next at least a couple of days until we get
00:07to Monday in the trade deadline is the Padres, who have finally you want to talk about a team that
00:13woefully underperformed a team with no front end starter.
00:19And if this was the ownership group prior, they probably were already would have went out and bought Scoble if
00:24they could have.
00:25But they are they've turned it around and I got to give them credit here.
00:31I mean, Machado finally figuring out Tatis.
00:34They've got some guys in there.
00:36The back end of that bullpen is as good as any with Mason Miller closing it.
00:42Now, they did just handle business again.
00:45I think it was the Rockies.
00:47They ended up doing you saw them firsthand against the Marlins at home last week.
00:52Now they're at home.
00:53They got the Giants.
00:54They won one yesterday, I believe, three one.
00:57So now what is what do we do with this Padres team who is rolling out King Walker Bueller?
01:07I don't know how but there are.
01:10So I'm a guy like Seth Lugo, who was already with the Padres.
01:14Does it not make sense if the Padres went out and got somebody like that, Craig, to help them make
01:20a stretch run?
01:21Right.
01:22So the Padres right now, as it stands on fan graphs, their odds are 22%.
01:25So they're sort of on the outside looking in on on some of the other teams.
01:31But Joe, to your point, they were less than 10% a week ago.
01:35So they've really jumped up in terms of the odds.
01:38And so when their front office looks at it, they probably say, OK, we got a tough decision to make
01:44here.
01:44Are we good enough to win the World Series?
01:46No.
01:46Are we good enough to get to the NLCS?
01:48Probably not.
01:50So do we play for the wild card here?
01:52Because that's their their only shot in years past, Joe, with this record.
01:57And you mentioned the previous ownership.
01:59They would probably look and say, OK, we're five games behind L.A.
02:03We're not going to win the division, but we still are alive in it.
02:07That's the difference this year.
02:08They have no chance of winning the division.
02:10So it's only for the wild card.
02:12How aggressive are they going to get when you're only playing to potentially go on the road for three games?
02:18I don't know the answer.
02:19I still don't think they have enough starting pitching.
02:21So if they do plan on trying to make a run at this, they're going to have to go out
02:26and get somebody because it is bullpen day every day, almost for the Padres, to me at least.
02:33So I don't know the answer, Joe.

02:35I know that Manny Machado came out the other day and he said that this is the same team we've
02:39had all season.
02:40It's just we're starting to play well.
02:41That's probably a fair statement.
02:42I think their hitting is definitely good enough.
02:44One through six, one through seven.
02:46They're deep enough.
02:47And if they decided to go out and make a move, they're going to have to go back into that
02:52form system again.
02:52It feels like they always do.
02:54And trade guys, if they still have it, to be able to get not just one, I think two starting
02:59pitchers, Joe.
03:00I don't think they have enough starters, not just to win in the postseason.
03:04I don't even think they have enough guys to get through the regular season right now.
03:07At least that's my view on it.
03:10Yeah, they have.
03:11Listen, J.P. Sears, I think, is a fantastic find.
03:15He's on the mound for him here tonight, going up against the Giants.
03:19And, you know, quietly, he has been money.
03:23The team can't score and he runs the Giants.
03:25But boy, oh boy, did Robbie Ray turn it around and figure it out over the last five to six
03:31weeks.
03:32I mean, because early on, it was not good with the Giants.
03:36But his last six starts, I mean, no runs, one run, one run.
03:40His worst start was against Colorado in Colorado.
03:44And he only gave up three runs, Greg.
03:46But outside of that, no runs to Atlanta, no runs to the athletics.
03:50I mean, you go down the list, it's, they have been, he's been really, really good.
03:55But Giants aren't going to be unloading anybody, at least not, that doesn't have an expiring contract here.
04:02You want to talk about a guy that absolutely could help some teams here.
04:06But kudos to Robbie Ray.
04:08Flying under the radar, I don't see any runs being, I just don't know where the runs are coming tonight.
04:13And I like what I've seen from J.P. Sears.
04:17You saw him in person.
04:19Pretty impressive stuff, right?
04:20Yeah, and not throwing 97, 98, just getting outs, and he's lefty.
04:25So I think you're probably looking at first five under, I would say, in at least the way that that
04:31could play.
04:31And then if that happens, you jump back on, and you probably take the Padres at that point.
04:36Because you know they're going to get to that nasty bullpen.
04:38And that bullpen with Millers and Morahone and some of those others, they just don't give up any runs.
04:43So, yeah, it'll, look, it's kind of weird seeing the Padres being in two games over .500, but only 20
04:50% on fan graphs.
04:51And that sort of tells you they still have a lot of games with L.A., and they have a
04:53tough schedule left.
04:54So it's not going to be easy.
04:56And then the other part of it, too, is that in the past, A.J. Preller, Joe, all he had
05:00to do was call Peter Seidler, who passed away,
05:03or call Seidler family and say, hey, this is what I'm doing.
05:06And they just give him the keys, you know?
05:08And now they're gone.
05:09So I don't know.
05:11Like, this is the first deadline with sort of this new ownership group in place.
05:15What will they do?
05:16Will they say, okay, yeah, do whatever you want?
05:18Or will it have to be more measured?
05:20We're all going to find out together on Monday, because there's never been a deadline that Preller hasn't gone all
05:25in.
05:25This would be the first one that he isn't.
05:28So, I mean, this is a guy that got Juan Soto, you know?
05:30So, yeah, we'll see.
