Severe storms are leading to tornado threats and flash flooding from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes.
Transcript
00:00North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi,
00:05all these states have had severe storms, including Wisconsin and Illinois, which is where we're going
00:10to see the strongest storms develop here as we head in this evening. But right now I want to
00:13focus here on the strongest storms we are currently tracking with some storms that just moved through
00:17rapid cities. I freeze frame the radar. These storms have what we have what we call a destructive
00:22tag with them. So these are elevated severe thunderstorm warnings. These are the severe
00:27thunderstorms that are capable of producing the baseball size hail, the 80 mile an hour winds.
00:32This is primarily going to be for the wind speeds, the wind gusts, than it is going to be the hail
00:37sizes of what we are going to be tracking. But overall, we showed you Chicago and the main reason
00:41why is this is where we're going to see the strongest storms move in. Let's go and take a
00:45closer look here and you can see these storms are starting to move in. That storm that's moving
00:49through Elgin right there, that storm is going to be capable of producing at least 60 mile an hour
00:53straight line wind gusts. This is going to be a dangerous situation. As we put the radar loop on
00:57there, it actually had a tornado warning with it previously because of how strong those winds are.
01:02So once again, the tornado threat isn't quite over just yet here with this region. We're going to
01:06continue to track this as we go forward. The storm motion is going to continue about 20, 30, in some
01:11cases up to 40 miles an hour. So as I freeze frame the radar, if I go from the coast in Chicago to the
01:17leading edge there of the storm, it's about 35 miles away. So we have about an hour, give or take,
01:23before the storm moves in. So this is going to be a dangerous setup here with once again,
01:27we've already had a tornado warning with that particular storm here as it continues to work
01:31its way towards Lake Michigan and the city of Chicago. So if you're in Chicago right now,
01:36if you have any plans, if you have anything to get taken care of, you need to be indoors. That's
01:41going to be the best advice I can give you as this damaging storm moves in. We could see possibly
01:45some power outage possible because of how strong the winds are as this storm is moving in. So we're
01:49going to continue to track this very closely. As you look at our updated act, we have the exclusive
01:53storm zone. As we head into this evening, once again, we have two primary areas we're watching,
01:58one across the high plains of the Dakotas. That's where we've seen some of those large hail
02:02producers. And then also you see that zone right there across parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois,
02:08including Chicago, which is where we've had that tornado warning storm with the strong winds now
02:12working its way into Chicago here within the hour. So as we show you the broad view, once again,
02:17on radar, we have multiple severe thunderstorm watches in effect right now for those areas that
02:22we've been tracking here with us. But all those little yellow boxes you see, those are all severe
02:27thunderstorm warnings that we have been tracking. And as we go forward, you can see by about six o'clock
02:31local central time, which is going to be coming up in another hour. That's when you can see those
02:36widespread showers, storms, and severe storms moving through the Chicago metro. So pretty much all of
02:42northern Illinois, southern parts of Wisconsin, a majority of the shores there of Lake Michigan
02:49will be dealing with severe weather here as we head into this evening and as we head into tonight.
02:53And it actually looks like the strongest storms, the most devastating as far as the wind gusts,
02:58are actually going to develop after sunset there along the east coast of Lake Michigan, therefore
03:02the state of Michigan. So we're going to continue to track this for you here as we head into tonight.
