02:29To win Ed
02:56When they'remering
03:15I'm here to play the game.
03:16I'm here to win.
03:24I was scrolling through Instagram one night, and I saw an advertisement that said,
03:29do you have what it takes to survive out here?
03:32Four months later, I'm here.
03:35Sixteen players are about to compete in a game of survival for a potential million-dollar prize.
03:41I don't really know much about this show yet.
03:43What I imagine is like an adult Hunger Games.
03:45They have been dropped off in a remote part of Alaska, with only the clothes on their backs,
03:50and told to await further instructions.
03:52Drop yourself into a remote location and just bend for yourself with people that you don't know about.
03:58Sounds like an amazing time to me.
04:00These players come from a wide array of backgrounds.
04:03I'm a recovered heroin addict.
04:05I'm a felon.
04:07I'm a survivor.
04:09Through that, I've seen some really dark sides of humanity.
04:12With varying degrees of survival skills.
04:16My survival skills consist of mostly just growing up, watching survivalist TV shows.
04:21But they share a willingness to endure the brutal Alaskan conditions.
04:26Alaska's been my dream trip since I was a child.
04:29I hike, I hunt, I camp.
04:32I try to get as far away from people as I can most of the time.
04:35What they do not know yet is that the only way to succeed in this game will be as part
04:41of a team.
04:42I've been a nomad for nearly 20 years.
04:45I'm single, no kids, no pets.
04:47I'm pretty much free.
04:49I'm the boss.
04:50I own my own company.
04:51I've been my own entrepreneur since I was 22 years old.
04:54I don't know how to take orders.
04:56I don't know how to have a boss.
04:57I'm coming out here to win.
05:00Anybody who knows me and my family knows damn well we really need this money.
05:06The players have arrived in Alaska in the fall.
05:10A season of high rainfall, rapidly dropping temperatures,
05:15and increased activity from the area's dense population of bears.
05:19In a few short weeks, snow will begin to fall as winter sets in.
05:24Maybe the players will survive that long.
05:26For now, they can only wait and see what the game has in store for them.
05:34That's a helicopter.
05:35The players arrive with nothing.
05:37Their only source of equipment are these cargo crates.
05:40How badass is that, right?
05:42Parachuted onto the field via helicopter.
05:46Gotta be shopping good.
05:47Some will contain supplies.
05:49Others will contain challenges.
05:52Yeah, let's do it.
05:52And the final drop will contain a potential million-dollar prize
05:56for any players and team that remain.
05:59Game time, boys!
06:01With the first drop in place, the game begins now.
06:09Wait, are these people too?
06:11Yes.
06:12Seen a lot of hoof tracks.
06:15Yeah.
06:16This is the cleanest we will be.
06:18All right.
06:19See the enemy.
06:20See the enemy.
06:28What do we have here?
06:32What's your name?
06:33Corey.
06:33Corey?
06:33Nice to meet you.
06:34Nice to meet you.
06:35What's your name?
06:35Javier.
06:36Woo!
06:37All right.
06:38Welcome to the game.
06:40You are stranded in the wild.
06:42There will be no voting off of contestants in this game.
06:46The only way out is to personally give up.
06:49You may quit at any time.
06:51If you choose to quit, shoot a flare into the sky,
06:54and you will be removed from the valley.
06:56You must remain a part of a team throughout the entire game in order to win.
07:02You can change teams at any time, but you cannot win this challenge alone.
07:07Start with these provided kits.
07:09Be on the lookout for additional resources.
07:12Choose a team of four right now.
07:15All right.
07:17This is it.
07:17Choose swiftly.
07:19Rambo.
07:20And find a suitable place to settle the cold and the darkness are rapidly approaching.
07:25I'm still reading the damn piece of paper.
07:28I feel somebody grab my shirt, so I'm like, okay, I'm in this person's team.
07:32I'm not sure who that is.
07:33We have one too many.
07:34Two too many.
07:36Two.
07:37There's a lot of judging the book by the cover out here.
07:40Dude, I can't believe we just picked our team.
07:42When you don't know somebody, that's about all you have to go on.
07:46Let's do it.
07:46Yeah, let's do it.
07:47All right.
07:48I'll go.
07:48I'll go.
07:49Just must.
07:50Okay.
07:51Got this.
07:52We were the last team picked.
07:53You realize that?
07:54Yeah.
07:54I had a complete moment of freezing, and it took me a second to understand what was happening.
08:00Too many here.
08:01I'll go.
08:01I'll go.
08:02Come here.
08:03We just met a bunch of strangers out here pretty much, so we were kind of the remainder
08:06of the group left over.
08:08If we're going to put our eggs in a basket, let's put it in this basket.
08:10Absolutely.
08:12To create a level playing field, the players have divided themselves equally into four teams.
08:21Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta.
08:30Let's move out.
08:31Okay.
08:31We're ready.
08:32Let's go.
08:33With less than an hour remaining until the sun sets and the temperature drops, the players
08:38must head off to find suitable camps.
08:41First order of business.
08:42Finding shelter for the night.
08:48Each team is assigned a quadrant of the playing field.
08:52They can establish their base camp anywhere within that area.
08:56To establish their base, they have been given identical gear sets consisting of...
09:02Yes.
09:02There it is.
09:03A hatchet.
09:03There it is.
09:04A knife.
09:05It's sharp.
09:06A tarp.
09:07A wool blanket.
09:08That's a big wool blanket.
09:09A flashlight.
09:10Oh, man.
09:11A bow with eight arrows.
09:13That's what's up.
09:14A medical kit.
09:15First aid.
09:15There we go.
09:16A flint.
09:17That's our life.
09:18Two tin cups.
09:19A boiler.
09:20A map.
09:21We can find our way.
09:22Bear spray.
09:23Yeah, I think everybody should at least carry one of these on their personal item at all
09:26times.
09:26And of course, four flares, one for each player, should they choose...
09:31We ain't opening this.
09:32Nope.
09:32Not at all.
09:33...to quit the game.
09:34You guys can take this back.
09:37There's a game trail up here, y'all.
09:39Got it.
09:40Perfect.
09:41Careful.
09:42Move slow.
09:43Okay.
09:44Slow is smooth and...
09:45Move this fast?
09:46Move this fast.
09:48Right here.
09:50Not pumped at all.
09:52There's no resources.
09:54Almost four o'clock.
09:56We probably got about 45 minutes left of daylight.
09:59We're in the middle of Alaska, in the middle of a rainforest.
10:02I saw a clearing as we were coming in.
10:05Vamos!
10:05In this environment and how unforgiving it is, even the most callous person is going to struggle.
10:11When temperatures dip beneath 30 degrees Fahrenheit, humans can only survive about three hours
10:17in the open before hypothermia sets in.
10:19With sunset rapidly approaching...
10:22Go ahead, ladies.
10:23We'll follow.
10:23...alpha team must build a shelter before the temperature drops even more.
10:27We're trying to get a shelter build, which is probably one of the toughest things, especially
10:31in a harsh environment like this.
10:33Watch your feet.
10:34Keep looking down.
10:34Yes.
10:35How you doing back there, Justin?
10:36Good.
10:37I've been fortunate enough to utilize the skill set in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping,
10:42and especially in the survival game.
10:43An ideal campsite has flat ground, access to water, and natural protection from the elements.
10:50We may still have to go a little bit farther.
10:53So far, none of the terrain they've seen meets those requirements.
10:58This really looks like shit, guys, but we could set up shelter here, save some daylight.
11:04There's a good overhanging with these limbs.
11:07I say we push on for at least another five minutes just to see what's up over this little
11:10building here.
11:10Yeah, I like the original plan.
11:12At least we know where this is at.
11:13It may rain tonight, so if we've got what we have and we bring it into this bank, the
11:20water should shed off of it, and this is naturally going to help us with water determent.
11:26We can't build a fire right here.
11:28Well, I'm sure we could, but we don't really know each other well enough to dig our claws
11:33in when we're in a disagreement or have conflicting ideas, but I definitely foresee there being
11:40some type A clashes in the team that we have.
11:43It's a little bit flatter up here, up on the top.
11:46I'm just thinking of how we could each sleep.
11:48I'm out here for myself, but in order to win this thing, I've got to become more of a team
11:53player rather than the lone wolf.
11:56What do you think, Justin?
11:59Okie okie.
12:01900 meters away, at neighboring Bravo camp, a clear leader...
12:05This is Devil's Club.
12:06Don't touch it.
12:07...begins to emerge.
12:08It'll f*** up your hand.
12:11Watch every step.
12:14I'm going to need a twisted ankle on the first day.
12:16Oh, this is a perfect spot.
12:18Yeah, this is way better than the other side.
12:19Yeah.
12:20Keep an eye out.
12:21We need some dry limbs from higher.
12:23Yeah.
12:23Put them in the pocket.
12:24Okay, cool.
12:25Put them in the pocket, he says.
12:28Unlike Alpha, Bravo team wastes no time in choosing a campsite and beginning to build a shelter.
12:33I'm going to get that rock and start clearing this out.
12:36I've been doing outdoor construction my whole life.
12:38I'll be the workhorse.
12:40I'll build the shelters.
12:41I'll be getting the firewood.
12:43I'm going to just keep going.
12:45When you clean this stuff, just rip all that out and push it out of here.
12:48Under Javier's guidance...
12:50Cover that whole side of the tree.
12:52Bravo team is using two fallen trees as the foundation of their structure.
12:56You want me to take this one over?
12:58Yeah.
12:59Turn it upside down like so, and the water seems to beat off of it better.
13:03They're adding alderwood trees for their structure and evergreen branches for their natural insulation
13:08and moisture-wicking properties.
13:10That's good for either over or underneath the wood.
13:15I don't want it to get holes.
13:17You know, the walls need a leader in their pack, you know?
13:21So go ahead.
13:21Let it be Javier.
13:22I think it'll flow a lot more smoothly having a guy make the decisions.
13:27Eventually, if we're going to use a canvas, we can start putting thinner ones this way.
13:31Like cross-bracing?
13:32Are you just crossing it?
13:33But then once again, clear it with Javier.
13:36Okay, so two on fire and one collecting long sticks?
13:40Yeah, we can do that.
13:42I've been traveling alone for a very long time.
13:43I know I work well alone, so that'll be the most challenging aspect of this whole competition
13:49is working in a team with others.
13:51You know how to find fatwood, right?
13:53What's fatwood?
13:54Are you kidding me?
13:55Oh my God!
13:56I don't sugarcoat my words.
13:58Constructive criticism is what I was raised on.
14:00If you pull all this shit off, fatwood will be the hard stuff.
14:03That means that the resin came down from the tree after it died,
14:06and the resin gathered and collected in there.
14:08No shit.
14:09That's going to actually help me start the fire.
14:11I'm known to be very straightforward.
14:13I need a lot of things as big as your thumb.
14:15Lots of tinder?
14:15Lots of tinder.
14:16Roger.
14:17So I hope to be the warm person instead of cold and harsh person to deal with.
14:23I'll go look for driftwood.
14:25Driftwood is pretty wet.
14:26The wood that's standing straight up, any of those lower limbs,
14:29they're going to be more dry than driftwood.
14:31I've always said one of these days I'm going to go out to Alaska
14:34and explore and camp and hunt.
14:37So I'm lucky to be out here.
14:39Oh, squirrel.
14:41I very much like being on my own.
14:43It's my happy place.
14:45Oh, I'm talking to you in this though.
14:47I know I'm a good fisherman.
14:48I know I'm a good hunter.
14:49I don't know about plants and berries and mushrooms.
14:53About the driest I could find.
14:55Should burn.
14:56With the tarp in place, Javier is hoping his design will work to trap heat inside the shelter.
15:03When the heat goes that way, it goes into the hole.
15:06If they can start a fire before nightfall, where the temperature will drop severely.
15:10Get as many sticks as possible.
15:11We have enough pieces to create some good heat.
15:15I got to get more of these.
15:16We just don't have enough.
15:17Rush with that.
15:18We don't have very much light, so keep that shit coming.
15:20Our esteemed leader, it seems.
15:23Somebody's going to do it.
15:27Hey, come up here and look, just to see.
15:30I mean, nothing's going to be ideal.
15:33There's no Hilton out here.
15:35I grew up in a very poor family that was not loving, so I've spent a lot of my life
15:41trying
15:41to prove my worth.
15:43But see how this is kind of a natural tent?
15:45Let's go in a little bit further.
15:46I mean, let's just do something with that.
15:48It's pushed me to learn in every aspect that I possibly could get my hands in.
15:52I'm Jill, but I'm the jack of all trades.
15:55If there isn't anything up forward, up there, we can come back.
15:58Right now, I think we need shelter.
16:00We all know we can't survive alone out here and complete the game.
16:04If we're still going to look, we don't have much time left.
16:08I'm a detective.
16:09That's what I do for a living, so it's probably going to make me a little bit more fierce.
16:15Indecisiveness is one of my pet peeves, just so y'all know.
16:17Let's do it, then.
16:18Yeah, let's do it.
16:19I'm concerned about the other gal from Kentucky, Jill.
16:22She's definitely pretty tough.
16:23Hey, Lee, come on back.
16:25I'm okay.
16:27But right now, we have to move fast and make a decision to get a shelter built to set up
16:32and be ready for the evening.
16:34Let me go underneath this tree, see what's on the other side, and then I'll come back.
16:38So far, Team Alpha has lived up to their name as a team full of Alpha's butting heads.
16:44We're trying to stay together.
16:46But their stubbornness has cost them valuable time.
16:49Can you open that?
16:50So they settle on erecting shelter against the hillside, where Jill advised.
16:54Tie the tarps into this bank, the water will shed right over the top of it.
16:59This doesn't look like the ideal place to sleep.
17:05The Nika River region is classified as a rainforest, receiving an average of 68 inches of rainfall per year.
17:15These teams must continue to work quickly, constructing shelter, or risk being not just cold, but cold and wet.
17:23Charlie team...
17:24Careful on your left.
17:26...also searches for ground suitable to build camp.
17:29Oh, okay.
17:33This spot looks good back here.
17:35Yeah.
17:36This spot.
17:36We can find Y-pole branches.
17:39Yeah.
17:40And we can set up a frame to put the tarp over.
17:42I'm a high school wrestling coach.
17:43I always end up moving towards a leadership role.
17:47That's what I'm good at.
17:48I just let them know, like, this is what it's going to be like, and this is where I'm going
17:50to need you to be.
17:51We can set up a shelter.
17:52There's so much double-footed, dude.
17:54So much in here.
17:56What do you think about, like, this spot over here?
17:58Anywhere we can build a fire.
18:00I grew up outdoors.
18:02Yeah, so I was a military brat, going from place to place.
18:06I'm really good with team, but I like to take charge.
18:10Lean to style?
18:10Yeah, lean to style, and we'll stake some pegs or something?
18:13Yeah, absolutely.
18:13Charlie team has run cordage between two trees and is building a basic lean tube.
18:19So far, so good.
18:21Nick fashions makeshift stakes to secure the bottom into the ground and keep their sleeping area dry.
18:27I want it to hit and dribble any water down to the ground, not come back and suck.
18:33Okay.
18:34I worry about Nick.
18:36There is always an alpha male who thinks that they're the one who needs to run everything, and...
18:42I got an idea.
18:43We build a fire right here, and we find something to reflect the heat.
18:47Build a wall right here, fire pit right around there.
18:50Like, line this with rocks.
18:51Um, I don't know where we're going to find Jones.
18:54There is one type of person I don't get along with, and that's the type that just doesn't pull their
18:59weight.
18:59I abhor that.
19:00And if you can't rely on them, you might have problems.
19:04For real.
19:04Nick has an idea on how to improve their shelter by adding supports to the front flap.
19:09If we can do that, then it gives us more square footage.
19:12We put the fire right here.
19:13But that may have to wait.
19:15We're getting dark, and we're running short of daylight.
19:18We need to get a fire strider.
19:19We need to cut firewood so that way, at least when it's going, it's drying.
19:23I was actually in the Texas State Guard, and a lot of the men were like, oh, you're just a
19:28female.
19:28What you're saying doesn't matter.
19:30This stuff is just never going to dry.
19:32That's one of my biggest fears.
19:34If I'm on a group, and I'm just the only female, but there is another female on the team.
19:39Thank God.
19:42How's that?
19:43Yeah, I think it's something we can use.
19:44I think being an older person in this kind of environment definitely gives me an advantage
19:49because I can endure a lot being on big mountains, being in cold weather, being without a lot of food.
19:59A lot of people, especially younger people, might not have that mental grit and be able to just hunker down
20:04and bear through it.
20:05I can't wait for the chance to test myself and to see how far I can go.
20:10I look a little partial rainbow.
20:12Oh, yeah, you see the rainbow?
20:13Good vibes on the first day.
20:17Reading rainbow.
20:20To Charlie's east, only hundreds of meters away, Team Delta...
20:25Behind the trees there.
20:26...moves into their quadrant.
20:27It looks kind of open back there.
20:29Shelters from the wind.
20:30...and finds an area they believe is suitable for camp.
20:33Look at this magical sunset forest.
20:37I mean, what do y'all think?
20:38I think it's a great idea.
20:40We're the outcasts because when the teams were formed, us four were the four that weren't picks.
20:45I don't even know what to call this.
20:46Those are four.
20:47You can do stump shooting with them, but you can also hit squirrels and rabbits.
20:50Paul is our hunter.
20:52I'm actually a chef, too.
20:54Oh, no.
20:55Don is just so knowledgeable on what we're able to turn into food out here.
20:59I'm in the Marine Corps, and Joel is an engineer.
21:03Outcast.
21:04Ha-ha, everyone else.
21:06That kind of bit you in the ass.
21:08These guys are ready.
21:09They probably need to be cut to length.
21:12Typically, these lone wolves rebuild in campsites for one.
21:15But with limited daylight, Delta Team is quickly falling into complementary roles.
21:21Out in this environment, this isn't a place that you can just sit and think about it.
21:25What you need to do is you need to get going.
21:26Using the ridge poles that Joel has cut...
21:29Those ridge poles turned out nice.
21:31They did.
21:32...and the cordage that Jordan salvaged from the parachute drop...
21:35Try to use as little as possible.
21:37...they raise two angled braces to hold up their tarp.
21:41I spend a lot of time hunting and fishing, so I definitely feel at home.
21:44My background coming from the military is a huge advantage.
21:47But the knowledge that these teammates may not always remain teammates...
21:51Here, no, under.
21:52...is never far from their mind.
21:53I'm going to move with purpose and direction.
21:56Either follow me or go against me.
21:59Oh, wow.
21:59This is actually...
22:00Enough room for everyone?
22:02It's coming together, yeah.
22:04Growing up in eastern Kentucky, we grew up poor and it was hard around home.
22:07You just didn't know it because everyone was poor.
22:09We've done this type of stuff for survival.
22:11If we work as a snare, we will be eating squirrels.
22:14Yeah.
22:15There's literally times where if you didn't put meat in the freezer, you struggle to eat that winter.
22:20That is not an exaggeration.
22:22I came a long way from that, from my roots, and I just want to see if I'm still that
22:26guy
22:26and just connect with, you know, my upbringing.
22:29Reach me the axe and I'll clean this out and get us a place to start a fire if you're
22:32doing this.
22:33From a team standpoint, I get along with just about everyone.
22:37But I struggle with people who are brash and just real pushy and sort of oversteps their bounds.
22:43What do we do to deserve this?
22:45But once it rains, then, yeah, not so much.
22:48As day one draws to a close, all four teams have constructed basic shelters.
22:54While teams Alpha and Bravo have used the natural terrain to their advantage,
22:59teams Charlie and Delta have opted for lean-to structures on flat ground.
23:04And with the Alaskan sun setting into dusk, the only way to combat the inevitable freezing temperatures
23:10will be with a fire.
23:13Getting a fire tonight is going to be pretty tough.
23:16Starting to get low on daylight.
23:18Everything's completely saturated.
23:20The ground's wet and the air's wet.
23:22Our adrenaline is going to be pumping.
23:24We're going to be burning a lot of calories.
23:25But we need to get this fire going.
23:29We need to get this done quick.
23:34Okay.
23:38Alpha and Bravo...
23:40Come on, baby.
23:42God damn you.
23:43...have not figured out how to solve this damn puzzle.
23:47This is all of the moss.
23:49You hold up.
23:50So you think it's not that damp anymore, right?
23:54Neither the moss that Alpha has gathered...
23:57I cannot get it to go.
23:59...or the small wood chips that Bravo is using are dry enough to catch a spark.
24:05Come on, baby.
24:06Keep it going.
24:07No, son of a bitch.
24:08I smothered it.
24:10This place is a gigantic sponge.
24:13We won't find anything dry.
24:17You know how to do...
24:18Okay, so...
24:19Yeah.
24:19Oh, my gosh.
24:20You do it on the side?
24:21Yeah.
24:21Flick it with, like, your wrist.
24:24I have some concerns with Nick.
24:26I'm not just some female that's here to bow out when I've had enough.
24:31You know, I'm here for the long run, and I hope he sees that.
24:34Hold on.
24:35Hold on.
24:36It didn't take.
24:36Hold on.
24:37You want to fluff that cotton?
24:38That came from with the kit?
24:40Yep.
24:41With no rules against it, Charlie is attempting to solve the wet kindling problem
24:45by using cotton balls from their medical care as a fire starter.
24:50There we go.
24:51There we go.
24:52There's no rules to the game, but that's survival.
24:55It's the same thing.
24:57It is so slow.
24:57Yeah.
24:58Yeah.
24:58So it's just being smart and making sure you take advantage of everything possible.
25:03Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof.
25:05Woof, woof.
25:07I knew I picked a good team.
25:09Yeah, yeah.
25:10We have a fire in a shelter, son.
25:12That's right.
25:12That's right.
25:13And it's day one, son.
25:14Yes.
25:15Day one.
25:16That's teamwork right there.
25:18Nearby, Delta Team has found the same workaround.
25:22I'm feeling good about what we have set right here.
25:25There we go.
25:26A roof, a fire.
25:29Yep.
25:29And it's been a third of a day for us.
25:32I think we're in good shape.
25:33This is going to be a good first night.
25:38Am I the only one that's cold here?
25:40I'm trying to keep that in the back of my head.
25:42Uh, yeah, it sounds like we're pretty boys.
25:45We're going to be in trouble.
25:56I'm freezing my ass off.
26:00Are you guys sleeping?
26:02No, obviously not.
26:03Dude, it got cold.
26:05It got cold.
26:06It just dropped.
26:07Did you feel that?
26:09Dude, it did drop.
26:10I'm cold.
26:11Yeah.
26:12To make matters worse, it seems the freezing cold
26:17isn't the only thing posing a threat to the players tonight.
26:22Dude.
26:24Those are very close.
26:26Can you smell that?
26:28Yeah, I saw it.
26:30I'm catching a strong whiff of something.
26:32I think something's moving by.
26:34The brown bears of Alaska aren't just prominent here.
26:37I think I hear something moving around over there.
26:41Yeah, I can feel it.
26:42They're prevalent.
26:43With a whopping 2.5 bears per square mile,
26:47this area is the highest region for bear per square mile
26:51in the world.
26:53There's something big out there.
27:02That's a bear.
27:06There's a bear nearby.
27:08Be on the lookout.
27:11I got my spray in my hand.
27:15I'm definitely not believing.
27:26with the morning upon them the players have experienced their first night
27:30in their new alaskan home last night was tough it was cold first morning
27:38in our shelter a bunch of big spoons and little spoons in this mug
27:42it was tight in our little nine by nine uh dome oh everybody was snoring a little bit
27:48here and there i don't snore man uh pretty cold and wet you breathe real heavy
28:00it was really roughing it for the first night my butt cheeks were like two ice cubes man
28:06it was the worst sleep i ever had you guys are lucky i only had to get up and pee
28:11three times
28:12even with a fire for warmth teams charlie and delta faced a difficult night come on i'm really tired
28:20i got no sleep last night kind of sucked the ground was just too uneven to really get comfortable for
28:24me so first night was an eye-opener absolutely alaska gets dark in the middle of the night
28:31about one o'clock we all woke up freezing our fires started to go down we started to run out
28:36of fire
28:37wood so last night it got real it grounded us a little bit more we're not as invincible as we
28:47thought we'd be
28:48charlie team managed to keep their fire going throughout the night dude we thought it was
28:53roaring all night but their makeshift water collector we got a sip has not fared as well
29:00if we follow there's a confluence of streams in a marshland right here for day two i think my biggest
29:05concern is finding clear drinking water because they're surrounded by brackish tidal pools right
29:11now there may be a really good hunting spot right over there there's a lot of bear scat there's a
29:16lot
29:16of deer sign but there's water there's water that's the big part that place right there's water i grew up
29:21on 250 acres over at my dad's house where i was taught how to survive and then i had my
29:26grandparents
29:26house that i got to hunt on almost every day i was a sergeant in the marine corps so i
29:31can adapt to
29:32almost any situation i'm hungry i quit my job for this i'm out here to win it baby that's where
29:37we're
29:37going to find water i'm down to go check it out let's go check it out it's been great getting
29:42to know
29:42everyone we really mesh well as a team spirit check find some fresh water for the team yo nick is
29:49the great hunter angie is super into fishing i'm going to be a front runner i bring a lot of
29:56practical
29:57experience to fill those gaps to make my team stronger you guys have cups yep my focus right now
30:04is on the rule of threes you have about three hours with exposure to last if you don't have proper
30:11shelter you can only last about three days without water and about three weeks without food
30:15what do you think andrew stagnant so obviously we have to get a fresh water source there's not
30:22going to be anything in there i'm going to try to be the workhorse and try to be in the
30:27glue that
30:27holds the team together hold on what do we have here is it fresh i just want up there to
30:34be a beaver
30:35dam up there and we're eating its poo it's not good to get jardia i got this hold on hold
30:41on we still
30:42got to boil it down the team is cut off guard by andrea's risk it's clear and it's moving so
30:50while
30:51moving water is better than sitting water it can still pose a serious risk of bacterial contamination
30:56or even parasites being out here water is a real big risk she drank a little bit of it it's
31:05okay i mean
31:06hopefully not enough to just get sick sick lack of fast moving water around here close by is a problem
31:13so this is going to be the boil stuff
31:20well night one alaska in the books once we get to a different location see what's in the area
31:27are we moving moving after a disastrous first night on uneven ground and with no apparent water source
31:34nearby maybe we could walk down the beach and try to find a better spot yeah alpha team decides to
31:42move camp the roots underneath us got quite uncomfortable another day without water will
31:48put them even further behind in the survival rule of threes three days without water three weeks without
31:55food and right now we're behind the other teams i have a broad skill set that every marine has one
32:03of the
32:04things you learn from the military is that if you're the one that's going to set out a plan you
32:09have
32:09to be 100 confident jill she picked our area it was completely uninhabitable so my plan for improvement
32:17today is taking the lead on our team i have lived out in the rain for a month and i've
32:23come through the
32:24other side if we can get elevated off the floor in our next place that'll that'll definitely help to add
32:30comfort they tried to blame me i have to be able to make a decision for my team we do
32:38have everything
32:39correct let's take that trail that's the least path of resistance gotcha definitely not the submissive
32:46female on this game board i run this show however i want as alpha explores across the river they see
32:53smoke
32:54we got the fire going signaling to them that an opposing team has managed to create fire
32:59when they have failed to kudos like props to you but how much energy did you burn all night long
33:06gotta be a little uncomfortable on night one we're rested yep i know that i can take on this wilderness
33:13because i've been through a lot worse i was shot in the face by the man i loved with a
33:1822 caliber gun
33:21luckily he was about 15 feet away so it went straight through i wish i could say that was the
33:27worst thing
33:28that's ever happened to me but it's not i've seen some really dark sides of humanity it's made my
33:35senses highly aware this looks like something interesting because i'm gonna kind of see follow
33:41it up a little bit girls are pretty resilient they're pretty tough but i got my eye on lee just
33:48to make
33:48sure he's okay he's too slippery he's probably the oldest one in the group and you know you got to
33:55take care of your team going on a full 24 hours without water alpha team not only seeks out a
34:02new
34:02location but also better luck oh i hear a waterfall nice oh yes that's the sound of music right there
34:15fresh water
34:18having found a clean water source it makes sense to set up cam nearby
34:24oh yeah come here and look at it we have streams on both sides of us we have watershed on
34:32both sides
34:32of us it's not level but if we sleep with our head up just like we did last night it's
34:38not ideal
34:39right but what's going to be ideal out here nothing is out here where's our man lee lee lee
34:49i'm feeling lee out so far he seems to want to be more solitary it seems like he's in his
34:58own little
34:58world maybe lee is kind of like me i'm definitely type a and this group thing is rough on me
35:06and maybe
35:07it's rough on him too after a long cold night bravo team takes a break from fire building oh yeah
35:17that's
35:17what we need right there to search for food got blueberries for you while brian and corey pick wild
35:23berries javier and tim explore at the beach it looks a little deep there i want to go to the
35:30shallow
35:30part here yeah yeah are we just looking for crabs and we're looking for anything that's edible
35:37it's been roughly 24 hours since my last civilized human meal found a couple different
35:42types of seaweed that were left behind from the tide moving out this stuff tastes clean and crisp yeah
35:46but i would love some meat okay so there's a pool here this is where bottom feeders get trapped
35:54you typically tap on the shell if i can't open it with my hands it's alive i'm in a place
36:01in my life
36:01it's a crossroads you have a lot of people that know hey i want to be a doctor or a
36:06lawyer i want
36:06to be this unfortunately i wasn't one of those people i've never done anything like this are these
36:12okay to eat uh there's the experts that have eaten this and died i'll show you one thing check this
36:19out
36:21the clinket are the people of the tides when the tide is is down the table set what they would
36:27do is
36:27they'd kiss each one you taste it no no you kiss it and you gather them in 30 minutes to
36:33an hour if
36:34your lips go numb you don't eat these if you got that in your body chances are 50 you're gonna
36:40die
36:41i wouldn't go for these today we still got fat reserves we might be changing our minds tomorrow
36:47i'm already changing my mind bro i'm about to start picking these bad boys up and kissing each one
36:52and talking to these guys i am surprised at their lack of experience but during this game you don't
37:01necessarily need to finish with the team that you started so i'm actually keeping that in mind
37:09javier's making good clear decisions that you know keep us all safe but right now we don't have any food
37:15because we can't cook it because we don't have fire i'm really good at falling in line knowing my
37:21place and where i need to be but as soon as those decisions start to get questionable we're gonna
37:25have to have a chit chat let's get off this beach and go start that fire
37:32so far the delta team proves to be a worthy adversary to their alaskan contender
37:37they've made fire they've found a nearby water source they can boil and ensure it's safe to drink
37:43best part of waking up playing boiled water they continue to set secure shelter and like other
37:52teams their thoughts also turn to finding food the team splits up to accomplish this while jordan
38:00sets out to find deer this is exactly the kind of stuff i'm looking for that looks like a hoof
38:07paul steps just feet away from base camp to check the snare he said oh we definitely had something
38:16shit patting for a little bit we'll reset that one oh so much for breakfast maybe lunch
38:25though paul comes up empty-handed and finding a trapped animal
38:29he makes another discovery that proves a different animal is very much oh yeah alive and near bear
38:35scat did smell something in camp last night pretty strong smell could have been bear
38:40there's more bear scat older scat there so it's definitely somewhere they're they're coming through
38:48i've been trying to pinpoint where all the other teams are but i don't see a lot of smoke
38:52that's all right they can freeze that's right their flares will go up first yeah i guess it's good for
38:59us i come from a hog farm east of indianapolis i grew up hunting fishing trapping if i had to
39:07identify my superpower when it comes to survival it's being able to work on a team and foster camaraderie
39:14even in the most difficult of situations i found two big ones oh excellent oh my gosh yes did you
39:22find
39:22one yeah this one's just hanging out i lost my mom in 2016 of suicide and ever since that appetite
39:29for putting yourself to the test that's been something i pursued in memory and in honor of her
39:35all we need is like 100 more yeah just literally just fistfuls more
39:41now back at camp delta is the first team to cook and eat a modest first meal of boiled muscles
39:47let's
39:47eat them while they're hot with food water and fire all secured delta team seems to be off to an
39:52early lead come on jordan it's food time oh okay oh look i got a berry in there oh you
39:59haven't had a
40:00berry yet though have you no but you earned that one you guys are so sweet i feel at home
40:06with the
40:06underdogs i grew up in a small town of 25 people spent my whole childhood living on the back of
40:13the
40:13horse up in the mountains being able to hunt and forage i used to spend three four months out in
40:18the wilderness by myself i am most comfortable out in the woods around people not so much
40:23but i'm hoping that i can fit into the team because i'm here to win 110 i'm gonna win this
40:31game
40:32i don't think any other team is eating like we are right now the skies signal that there will be
40:40rain but what our players do not know is that during this time of year it is not abnormal for
40:47rainstorms to last up to a week at a time back at charlie camp
40:55the arrival of legitimate fresh water is the last thing on everyone's mind i've been throwing up
41:01all day i had just gotten through helping build our shelter and all of a sudden
41:09my body is rejecting any kind of food or water but it's not under control oh my god i can't
41:18breathe
41:24oh no to me that's just my body telling me that something's not right dude this water's clear
41:33maybe that one will be good for you not right now it's been hours and the vomiting andrea is experiencing
41:44has been relentless
41:57back at bravo camp the team continues to focus their efforts on fire it's the most important thing
42:04for us right now so they're placing their faith in emerging team leader javier as one of the only
42:11two teams without fire morale is low without this fire i think we're pretty this place kind of sucks
42:20everything is just sucking wet this island has kissed my ass it's a kick in the balls man when you
42:26see another fire going and everyone is in the same conditions what do they do that we didn't do what
42:31do
42:31they have that we didn't have do they have dryer wood like what the are they just better at than
42:35we
42:35are like who knows man you want to remain positive and optimistic but me being a realist also so
42:42without this dude no food no warmth shitty nights of sleep this is a losing battle
42:49it's mad serious quiet right now at camp bravo hey way to think positively
42:54guys let's do some crazy prep of tinder javier he's a good guy but he's a horrible leader keep those
43:00shavings coming please the micromanaging it sucks use the hatchet and try and get the core out dude
43:08hey uh guys rambo we all kind of know what we need to do we don't need a mother that's
43:15harping us
43:15every 10 seconds i'm like hey hey guys hey anybody here javier he knows probably more than all of us
43:26combined but javier is a pain in the ass and with only one hour before sundown holy
43:35shit guys javier makes a breakthrough hey uh can you help me yeah we need fuel so you got the
43:42fire
43:42going yes dude yeah good job dude yeah this is just a game changer morale is up keep the chips
43:53coming
43:54please everybody's a little happier yeah dude like without a fire i gave myself like two more days
43:59thing is guys we need fuel to keep it going hell yo stand down man
44:07i'm not really sure what's going on but i just feel like under these circumstances it's just going
44:13to get worse no and i don't want to bring you guys down no you're not you don't want to
44:18no you really
44:20don't want to i don't want to i don't know if i could make it through the night right now
44:24the way
44:24i feel i feel like i'd be out of the tent throwing up my body is rejecting any kind of
44:28food or water
44:29that we have but i'm not somebody that would give up easily it's just going to get progressively worse
44:35i didn't expect like just to have violent vomiting something's not right so there's no way other than
44:43just to bow out this sucks man i think my team's disappointed but i wouldn't do it unless it was
44:51absolutely necessary you guys are going to rock it it broke my heart but you know i hope she's okay
44:58andrea was great we're definitely going to miss her it is one less person to share food with but it's
45:03also one less set of hands to do work around the camp so that's going to hurt us i believe
45:08in the long run
45:09andrea was great but i don't think she was mentally understood what she was getting into
45:13stay strong yeah it will be good i've coached wrestling for a long time and you see it man it's
45:20just like quitting is a disease things that you make a commitment to marriage friendships relationships
45:31quitters are just the worst quitting is hard the first time but the next time you do it it's easy
45:38and then the next time after that it's easy again and then it just gets easier and easier and easier
45:43your whole life and it's just miserable you know you quit one time on me and i just kind of
45:50know what
45:51type of person you are and i hate to say that because you know this isn't for everybody
46:01but you know quitting sucks andrea was the one that i wanted on my team and now she's gone
46:09if i'm on a team and i'm the only female how's that gonna go am i just gonna be pushed
46:14aside
46:20though they don't know who or from which team there's still four of us bitches andrea's flair signals
46:28to all the camps that the first of 16 players has decided to quit the game
46:43i don't want to cheer but i do it also provides reminder of the difficulty ahead yesterday when
46:53i was freezing my ass off i'm like i can't be the first in just two days this alaskan environment
46:59has proved to be the biggest challenge of their lives i don't think people can last 45 days in
47:05this year nobody could do this nobody little do they know their alaskan environment isn't even the
47:12most difficult part of this game they haven't even faced one another yet
47:21there are no rules you can set fire to their whole camp oh my god is he in there did
47:28we get that lucky
47:29get off of me dude this isn't about survival it's about who's the meanest
47:34you want to go home you want to get in there freeze your ass and go home you selfish bastards
