00:00On the Make It Right Call Kyle Wright Hotline, Mary Kay comes to us from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and
00:04Cleveland.com.
00:04Hello, Mary Kay.
00:07Hello, guys. How are you doing?
00:08We're doing okay. Now, I'm going to ask you about your opinion about why the Browns should make it known
00:13who the leader in the clubhouse or who the starter is momentarily.
00:17But you had a report yesterday that sources tell you that Deshaun Watson is the leader for QB1. Is that
00:26correct?
00:26Correct. He's ahead in the competition coming out of voluntary minicamp in the early part of the off-season program
00:34is what I reported.
00:35Okay. Was that surprising to anybody? It really wasn't surprising to me. We talked about it last week.
00:42There's a lot of things that would just naturally go for Deshaun Watson, but was it surprising to you?
00:49No, not really. I mean, I watched the first day of voluntary minicamp, and I wrote that day that Deshaun
00:58won the day, and then you go into reporting mode, and you find out what happened on the second day
01:03and the third day, and how did it go?
01:06And then you keep talking to as many people as possible, and you sort of find out where things stand
01:12right now coming out of the first part of the off-season program, which has been going on for almost
01:18a month now.
01:19So they kind of know what they're looking at, and they know what's going on out there on the field,
01:23and he did emerge from the voluntary minicamp ahead in the competition.
01:29And I know that created a lot of stir yesterday, but I don't think it should be shocking.
01:35I mean, you're talking about a three-time Pro Bowler who's started 72 games and taken teams to the playoffs
01:42versus, you know, some young guys.
01:45So I just don't really think that, you know, that this should have been the tidal wave that it was
01:50yesterday.
01:51It certainly was a tidal wave, Mary Kay. A lot of people very invested into these quarterbacks and the decision
01:58-making for this team this year.
01:59And the one thing that I'm a little curious about is, what is this June rush to have a quarterback
02:08named on the depth chart as QB1?
02:11Why do you think Todd Munkin seems to be adamant that in this situation, because we've had some QB competitions
02:18go right up until the first week of the season.
02:20Why June? Why is that important?
02:24Okay, well, first of all, Todd Munkin himself, we know that.
02:27He said that he would like to have his depth chart set, his depth chart.
02:31He didn't say that he would like to name his starting quarterback by June 11th.
02:36He said he would like to have his depth chart set, and I think that's vitally important.
02:40You have to have the depth chart set by then, because you absolutely want to go into training camp with
02:46your QB1 and give him all the reps.
02:49But I would argue that you want to have that depth chart set.
02:53I would do it now.
02:55Now, if Shadour was ahead and you thought he was going to be your guy, then give him all the
03:00first team reps.
03:01If Deshaun is ahead, then give him the first team reps heading into OTAs.
03:06And here's why I feel this way.
03:09And I don't think they feel this way.
03:11This is my opinion.
03:12They only have 13 quality practices in OTAs and the mandatory minicamp.
03:17You have got to get your first team offense working together.
03:20And why is that?
03:21Brand new offense.
03:23Brand new terminology.
03:24Brand new five starters on the offensive line.
03:27Rookie left tackle.
03:28Rookie center.
03:29Rookie receivers.
03:30You need to get the offense working together.
03:34You can't be splitting up reps.
03:36Even now, I don't think it's a wise decision to be dividing up those precious, precious first team reps.
03:43This offense has been horrible the last two years.
03:45You need to figure out who are my starting 11, get them working together as much as possible, and conduct
03:53as many 11-on-11s and situational football drills as you possibly can with your starters.
04:00Mary Kay, I actually totally agree.
04:01I know sometimes we disagree on these sort of things.
04:03I 100% agree with you on this.
04:05And I'll take it a step further.
04:06It's also fair to the rest of the team where there's going to be media availability.
04:10It's easier to answer a question.
04:13There's still always going to be questions about the quarterbacks.
04:15It's the Browns, for crying out loud, and we're not set at the position yet.
04:18We may not be for the entire year.
04:20But it's just easier to answer a question of how has Deshaun or how has Shador taken over the reins
04:26of this team instead of who do you think should be the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns?
04:29That can be a problem for everybody involved.
04:32So I have to agree with you on that.
04:34How much ground could Shador possibly make up?
04:37I mean, he's only going into his second offseason or second training camp, I should say.
04:41And you're going against a guy who, at one point, was all pro level.
04:46I know that was a long time ago, but it's not like the guy forgot how to work out.
04:50Right.
04:51He did not forget how to work out.
04:52And it just looks different when you watch a Pro Bowl quarterback operate in practice.
04:59I mean, even back in December when he was out there practicing for three weeks, there were people out there
05:04within the organization that were saying, you know, that he's the most talented quarterback that's out there right now.
05:11And I don't think that's a shocking revelation.
05:13Once again, he was a first-round pick.
05:16He was a three-time Pro Bowler.
05:18And he seems and appears to be healthy right now.
05:20And again, if the Browns had emerged from voluntary minicamp in the first month of the offseason program, believing that
05:29they were going to move forward with Shador Sanders,
05:31then it would be time for everybody to get behind him and rally around him and give him all the
05:38first-team work to get this fledgling offense ready to play.
05:43Nobody has a stomach for bad offensive football.
05:46It's not even fair to Todd Munkin to have to be dividing up reps when he's trying to install a
05:53brand-new offense where he's already admitted the learning curve is steep.
05:58So you need to figure out who that guy is.
06:01And maybe you don't need to declare it publicly, but it will be pretty obvious, I would think, if we're
06:06out there at OTAs and one guy is getting all the first-team reps.
06:10I mean, it starts to become pretty clear.
06:12We don't have the next veteran practice until May 19th.
06:15Once again, my point is, get behind the guy as soon as you possibly can and really take advantage of
06:25the 13 practices that are coming up here very soon.
06:28Mary Kay, do you think it matters to the Browns players who's ahead, who gets the job?
06:35Do you think they have a favorite?
06:37As we know, some people are great in the locker room and that certain guys you can rally around and
06:42other guys maybe not so much.
06:44What about in this instance?
06:46Well, I'm sure that some guys would rather have it go one way or the other.
06:54But the thing to remember about this offense, as I mentioned before, it is full of really, really young guys.
07:01And they're trying to learn a new scheme and new terminology themselves.
07:04And I'm guessing that they just want whoever it is to go out there and get their timing down with
07:13them and get their chemistry down with them.
07:15I think it would be easier for the young guys, too, especially now you've got Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston
07:21coming in there.
07:22It would be easier to be working and know who your starting quarterback is.
07:27Timing is a thing for a lot of people.
07:29Now, I've heard other players say that maybe the whole timing and chemistry thing is overrated.
07:36But I don't really think it is.
07:39I mean, when you've got Lamar Jackson throwing to Zay Flowers over and over and over again, you're going to
07:44know each other.
07:45You're going to figure each other out.
07:47You're going to know your timing.
07:48You're going to know how you react on a site adjustment and where you want the ball placed.
07:53And those things do take time.
07:55And so, for the sake of the rookies, for the sake of the offensive line, who are going to have
08:01to learn how to block for different guys,
08:03it's just vitally important to get everyone moving in the same direction as soon as possible.
08:08And Mary Kay, anybody that knows me knows I have a super secret recipe for an outstanding chicken salad sandwich.
08:15I got it from Berkshire Hills for my long time working there.
08:18Ken likes a good croque madame.
08:20He doesn't stop talking about it.
08:21Do you have a favorite sandwich, Mary Kay, that you like to make?
08:25I actually do a really nice job with a grilled cheese with ham.
08:32That was one of my specialties.
08:34But for the most part, my husband says that I've been in a 25-year cooking slump.
08:40But yes, I can make a mean grilled cheese with ham.
08:44I think I would still be able to do that.
08:46Well, the reason I ask the question is I saw somebody responded to your report, said,
08:53go make a sandwich, Mary.
08:55And it would appear it's Shiloh Sanders, and it's a verified account.
08:59So that would be the brother of Shador Sanders.
09:01I have it up in front of me.
09:03How do you respond to a family member taking issue with your report and throwing out insults like that?
09:12Well, let me just say about that, that I really do believe that I have been an inspiration for lots
09:21of women
09:21and young girls to know that you can go out there and do a good job in a man's world
09:29and take on all of that that comes with that.
09:34And I know that there are so many women who have joined the football world,
09:41especially because of some of the things that I've been able to do over the years.
09:45And I'm happy about that.
09:47And I know that will continue.
09:49Now we've got women in flag football, playing flag football all over the place.
09:54And I'm just happy that I have been able to help set the tone and open some doors in that
10:02way.
10:03And I know that that will continue.
10:05And that's just how I feel about that.
10:10Mary Kay, taking the high road, absolutely terrific answer.
10:15What did you think of the Browns draft, Mary Kay?
10:18Well, I have a story up this morning.
10:20I really think that Andrew Barry deserves a solid A for this draft.
10:27I think it's an absolutely tremendous draft to the point where I didn't think he could beat last year.
10:33But I actually think maybe he did beat last year's draft.
10:38Time will tell.
10:39But this looks to be an amazing class.
10:41And I have to add, we have to talk about Super Bowl window, too, don't we?
10:46I think we do.
10:49So, okay, Mary Kay, I'm glad you brought this up.
10:51I absolutely love it.
10:52You should have heard me pussyfooting around the situation yesterday because I was going,
10:55I was going, well, I know we've made jokes about this, but the window has to start somewhere.
11:01And if this is, you're getting five starters out of this draft, well, the window's got to start somewhere.
11:06So, please take it away.
11:08But it started last year.
11:10Last year was the foundation, which I was trying to say on this air so many times.
11:16Last year was the foundation of Super Bowl window 2.0.
11:22And this year is another big whatever, the flooring, the windows, whatever the case may be.
11:29Another big, huge installment of Super Bowl window 2.0 went in this year.
11:37Now you've got the core of the future of the Cleveland Browns is in place.
11:43And I really do think that what it needs more so than anything, besides a little bit of time, is
11:49just good quarterback play.
11:51I have a wild-ass conspiracy theory about this, by the way, about the quality of this draft and the
11:56quality of the last draft.
11:56And it doesn't have anything to do with Paul DeBedesta, but I'm going to ask you that here in a
11:59second.
12:00Please, go ahead.
12:00I'm sorry, I thought you were done.
12:01I apologize, Mary Kay.
12:02Go ahead.
12:02No, no, it's okay.
12:03I just, I just, this is what I've been trying to kind of, the point that I've been trying to
12:07get across.
12:07This is how you build a Super Bowl window.
12:11And teams always know when each other, when other teams in the NFL are in their window.
12:16It's the vernacular that's used in the business.
12:19So the Browns are creating their Super Bowl window and now have a team that they believe,
12:27and a roster that they believe, that over the next how many ever years, we'll be able to contend.
12:34Mary Kay Cabot joining us here on the Make It Right, Call Kyle Wright Hotline.
12:39I'm not going to share that conspiracy theory with you.
12:41Lima, what the hell was I going to ask?
12:42I wrote it down.
12:43Why won't you just share it?
12:44I didn't write it down.
12:45No, not the conspiracy theory.
12:47Oh, Paul DeBedesta.
12:48Does this have anything to do with Paul DeBedesta not being here anymore, that the Cleveland Browns
12:52drafts the last couple of years have been pretty good, it seems?
12:55No.
12:56No.
12:57No.
12:57I don't think that's the case.
12:59Remember, the Browns did not have first-round picks for three years.
13:032022, 2023, and 2024.
13:07It's a whole lot easier to draft well when you have a lot of premium draft picks, right?
13:14They had three in the first 39 this year.
13:18They ended up with some really, really good players in the first 39 and the first 58 that
13:24will be starters this year.
13:26So if you wipe out the first round of the draft for them this year, maybe they wouldn't
13:32be getting A's from everybody nationally, but they had premium picks, and then they made
13:38the most of them.
13:38They turned their nine original selections into 10 players and two fourth-round picks in
13:452027, and then also Titus Howard.
13:47So they maximized their nine selections, and they moved up and down the board, and it's
13:53a whole lot easier to do that when you have first-round picks.
13:58Mary Kay, we'll get you out on this.
14:00We had Dave Jenkins in studio, and he basically said if there's a will, there's a way to get
14:04a Super Bowl in Cleveland.
14:06He says it's just going to revolve around whether or not they can get the infrastructure around
14:12the downtown, the hotels, and all that stuff.
14:15Your prediction, crystal ball time.
14:17Do you think, Mary Kay, Cleveland, Ohio will host a Super Bowl?
14:22Actually, I do.
14:23I do think that Cleveland will get one.
14:25I think the stadium...
14:26Whoa!
14:31Super Bowl!
14:34Super Bowl!
14:34Super Bowl!
14:36Yeah!
14:38Let's go.
14:40Let's go, Mary Kay.
14:42Hey, damn it, let's go!
14:43Super Bowl!
14:44Two Bowl Browns.
14:45And they just put a bunch of cruise ships on the lakefront, and there you have your hotel.
14:53Viking River Cruises!
14:55She figured it out!
14:56Tiahoga River, the good time three!
14:58Good time!
14:58Three through nine!
15:00Battleships going after it!
15:01Here we go!
15:03Turn it up!
15:09Can you imagine John Facenda narrating a Super Bowl in Northeast Ohio?
15:17Well, no, you can't because he's gone.
15:18It'd be kind of crazy, yeah.
15:19Yeah, it'd be somebody else.
15:21Mary Callis.
15:22It'll coincide with the Browns being in their Super Bowl window, right?
15:27Well, you got your headline!
15:33All right, Mary Kay, thank you so much.
15:36All right, thanks, guys.
15:37Take care.
15:38Wonderful.
15:39Wonderful, Mary Kay.
15:41On the Make It Right, Call Call, Right Hotline.
15:42Okay, I didn't see this.
15:44Now we're going to see it, apparently.
15:46What's the croc, madame?
15:48Ken has a good recipe.
15:49Well, I don't even know what the hell that was.
15:51I go, where is he going with this?
15:52You don't know what that is?
15:53What the hell is a croc, madame, croc, madame?
15:57Yeah, of course, it's a classic French bistro sandwich.
16:01Oh, of course.
16:01Made of toasted ham and Gruyere cheese.
16:03Oh, the Gruyere.
16:04Everyone knows that.
16:06Mouth-watering.
16:06If someone knows how to make them, bring one on down.
16:09You got to put the bechamel sauce on top.
16:11The what?
16:12Bechamel sauce.
16:13What's a croc, madame without it?
16:14Well, and then, of course, it could be a croc, man.
16:17Sure, this one has a sunny side up.
16:20You got to be kidding me.
16:21Everyone knows this, Ken.
16:23No, no, no.
16:26You're going to make me talk about this thing you got over here, huh?
16:29I'll just say this.
16:30Mary Kay took the high road.
16:31All right.
16:32We will not when we come back here on Sports Radio 92.3.
16:36Well, don't speak for me.
16:37I might take the high road here.
16:39Good God.
16:41You're not doing him any favors.
16:43I'm just telling you that.
16:45Turn your mic off.
