Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar is praising the quick work by the TTPS in apprehending suspects and charging at least one person so far, in connection with the murder of woman municipal police corporal Anuska Eversley.

She says the police station murder and heist revealed a wider organisational issue, a lack of proper supervision within the service.

She spoke with our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh at the sod turning for a Hilton Garden Hotel, near South Park San Fernando.
Transcript
00:00With one Municipal Police Constable charged with the murder of his colleague,
00:05woman Municipal Police Corporal Anuska Eversley,
00:08and some of the stolen firearms and ammunition recovered following a brazen,
00:13deadly heist at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station on Sunday,
00:17Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa is praising the response by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
00:24She previously described the incident as an internal betrayal
00:29and now says it appears to have happened as a result of poor supervision within the Municipal Police Service.
00:36I think the TTPS and the Commissioner of Police are doing a fantastic job.
00:40They've worked very quickly.
00:41They have removed the head of the organisation, Municipal Police, Mr. Sagram Singh, I think he was,
00:48because that has not been happening today.
00:51We discovered it today, on that day.
00:55I think one of the officers in an interview talked about over eight months, about eight months that has been
01:01going up.
01:01So there has not been proper supervision of what is happening in the Municipal Police.
01:07On Wednesday, at the sod-turning ceremony for the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel at South Park San Fernando,
01:13the Prime Minister said as her government approaches one year in office,
01:18she's satisfied with their anti-crime initiatives so far, but says more work has to be done.
01:25I'm very pleased, first of all, look, the murder rate is down by 42%.
01:29Crime was something we campaigned heavily on, and we have some achievements, as I say, much more to do.
01:36Murders down by 42%, serious crimes down by 30%, crimes down from 600 to whatever it was at the end
01:43of last year.
01:44And again, this year, so far, from last year to now, that too is down.
01:49So I am very happy about that, but I'm not overjoyed because I think there's still much more to do.
01:55When asked about the status of government's reform of the current firearms users' licenses law, she gave this update.
02:02We are actively working on that together with the Law Reform Commission.
02:07I've asked for research to be done what's happening in other Commonwealth jurisdictions so that we can get models to
02:14follow.
02:15Yes, we will reform it.
02:17You know, to correct, it's 120 months of neglect that we have to correct.
02:22We've just had 12 months.
