The new head of the Southern Division of the Municipal Police Service Snr Supt Wayne Mohammed says, he has increased the layers of supervision for all shifts at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station.

It's a measure he says will prevent a recurrence of the station's robbery which left Woman Police Corporal Anushka Eversley dead, back in April.

Snr Supt Mohammed says he also plans to tackle the practice by some officers, of taking months of continuous sick leave while getting paid.

Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:00It's been six weeks since the San Fernando Municipal Police Station was robbed of more than 100 firearms,
00:07over 4,000 rounds of ammunition, and a woman police corporal on duty at the time was murdered.
00:14Among those charged for the crimes was a colleague.
00:17Many executive changes occurred in the days which followed,
00:21and recently a new head of the Southern Division was appointed, Senior Superintendent Wayne Mohamed.
00:27What happened in San Fernando is an incident that we would not want to happen again,
00:37and I'm going to assure them and give them all the courage that this will not happen again
00:44because I've put certain layers of things in place for it not to happen.
00:48I've even increased the supervision capacity of the shifts and battles running that is working to avoid anything at this
00:55point.
00:55Senior Superintendent Mohamed, speaking at a press service held to bless the police station on Friday,
01:01said there is another issue he has found that has been happening for a much longer time that he would
01:08like to tackle.
01:09There are some officers in mutual police who are on continuous sick leave,
01:14and they are drawing a salary at the end of the month.
01:18And I want to see how best I can work with the mayor, the CEO and the PRO of the
01:24corporation
01:25to ensure that we do something legitimately to avoid any reoccurrence of those officers obtaining salary and not working.
01:37He says frequent assessments will be done on officers and his officers will have the full support of the municipal
01:44police service
01:45and the corporation, and he hopes they can perform their duties with the passion expected from them.
01:52Head of the service ACP Wayne Meister says a recognition ceremony is also planned for next week in Chaguanas
02:00as they move to improve overall morale of municipal police officers.
02:05We know of the situation that took place, and officers were very traumatized during that period.
02:11So this is part of the healing process.
02:13They would have embarked on a project of, you know, bringing some renewal to the station.
02:18So for example, this station is newly painted, and there are a lot of renovations taking place outside
02:24and the compound of the station courtesy of the mayor, and that is part of the renewal process.
