Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro says the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service remains open to investigations by the Police Complaints Authority, especially in cases of alleged wrongful police shootings.
He was speaking at a security and strategic planning seminar hosted by the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
00:00As public debate continues over police-involved shootings and allegations of extrajudicial killings,
00:06Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara says the TTPS has nothing to hide and is willing to cooperate with oversight bodies.
00:13There is no public debate about police-involved shootings
00:22and the public debate about some people calling it extrajudicial killings.
00:31I want to assure the public here today that the TTPS has always and shall continue under my watch
00:40be able to independently investigate its own and if wrongdoing is found, prosecute those who are found to be doing wrong.
00:52The Top Cup made the announcement during a breakfast seminar on national security
00:56hosted by the Chagona's Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
00:59He said the police service has always been willing to work with the Police Complaints Authority.
01:05The commissioner also turned his attention to the recent spike in gun violence.
01:10He referenced a video circulating on social media showing gunmen storming a bar in penal over the weekend.
01:16The first thing you see in their hand is a gun and they start shooting immediately.
01:22There's a clip from penal over the weekend.
01:24They were running the bar shooting.
01:26So I am unsure why certain elements within the public would believe that when they see the police
01:34that they would do anything differently.
01:36They engage the police just as fast as they would engage the members of the public.
01:43The commission of police also made a direct plea to those in possession of illegal firearms.
01:48Some of your colleagues in crime have already called police stations and told police officers where to find these weapons.
01:59Take heed and do not be the last in line.
02:04Hand in the weapons and we shall continue to live and prosper in a society that we all can feel safe in.
02:14And with national concern growing over violence in schools, the commissioner announced that trained police officers will be deployed at high risk secondary schools from the start of the new school term in September.
02:26I am pleased to announce to the nation today that we, the TTPS, have answered the call and we have persons already in training for to have placed in those schools at the beginning of the school term, thus to keep the mandate of the government.
