The top COP is optimistic they will be able to arrest all the “big fish” criminals and not just the low-lying fruit during this State of Emergency.

Speaking to reporters following the TTPS’ annual interfaith service in San Fernando this morning, the police commissioner says the SOE is still early, but she is pleased with the work by officers so far.

00:00We have a mix, and we are already in a state of emergency, day 7, it's still early.
00:07And we are hopeful that we will get all the way.
00:10Optimistic that her officers will be able to detain the mastermind criminals
00:15and not just the smaller offenders,
00:17Police Commissioner Ula Harewood-Christopher says there is a lot of work still to be done.
00:23We are experiencing a measure of success,
00:27however I would not want to go into much details now.
00:30On Saturday, the TTPS issued a statement saying,
00:34Since the SOE was declared on Monday, 126 people have been arrested,
00:3917 firearms recovered,
00:41and over 675 rounds of assorted ammunition seized during more than 1,000 searches.
00:49On Sunday, following the TTPS's annual interfaith service held in San Fernando,
00:54Commissioner Harewood-Christopher was also asked whether or not
00:58the police service would be providing security to prosecutors
01:01after a number of them expressed the fear of being targeted
01:05following the assassination of Attorney Randall Hector
01:08outside a church on O'Lear's night.
01:11Yes, we are working on providing additional security.
01:16When asked about complaints of understaffing within the police service,
01:21the Commissioner said while this issue has existed for a few years,
01:25the exhaustive process for hiring police officers is both rigorous and necessary.
01:31We know for the past five years we have been working on recruiting officers.
01:37We must know that we cannot get the process for recruitment.
01:42Over the year, although we were supposed to recruit 1,000 officers in 2024,
01:48that was timely simply because of the processes.
01:52We have applicants who have failed the polygraph, failed the psychometric,
01:56and we have to ensure that when we recruit, we recruit the best.
