00:02It starts out with Sonic at a campfire telling a ghost story.
00:07I've seen that before.
00:09The narration calls Sonic's main group of friends by a group name.
00:14This is something game curious overreact to in AEW.
00:18I think this is the first time the Chaotix went camping.
00:22It's so lazy of the story that it doesn't explain why Team Sonic and the Chaotix have been camping for two nights in a row.
00:30The novelty would have worn off after the first time.
00:34The story starts wasting my time with the characters talking about how they reacted to ghost stories that we didn't have to be put through.
00:41And I couldn't care less.
00:43Espeo tries to be silly by having his fingers forming a hook shape as he goes visible again.
00:49So that's out of character.
00:51What's the point of Espeo as a character if he's gonna act silly?
00:54I wish it was explained that Tales made a security system for the Master Emerald, and Knuckles always uses it when he abandons it.
01:03Instead, it's never gonna stop being weird to people who respect the character that Knuckles isn't guarding the Emerald.
01:11Sonic had invited his team along to help build a friendship between the two teams.
01:15If Knuckles spent the whole weekend not enjoying himself, why didn't he go home by now?
01:22Right away.
01:24Already the story's stupid.
01:27Knuckles says there's no such thing as ghosts, so it's a different universe from the games where I never saw ghosts in Zandopolis Zone in Sonic Adventure 2.
01:35He lampshades that when they've gotta deal with enough stress as heroes, there's no reason to tell ghost stories too.
01:43Exactly.
01:45So why is this story even happening?
01:48The presence of the Chaotix isn't doing anything to make this good.
01:52What was interesting about them being here was just that they were here, and the novelty value wore off immediately.
01:59So now I'm just bored out of my mind because this premise isn't adding anything to the series.
02:05Oh right, the Chaotix did have a campfire right after the Iron Queen arc.
02:12I don't think they did that just to have fun having a campfire, though.
02:16I don't think they did that to go camping.
02:19It was literally just for the atmosphere.
02:21Tails says out of nowhere that some ghost stories represent an inner battle we haven't won yet.
02:27Who says that?
02:29So somehow he thinks he could learn something from him.
02:32And Knuckles is the smart one by saying that's stupid.
02:36Just because Tails is Sonic's best friend, he mindlessly likes every activity Sonic does with him when there's better things he could be doing.
02:45Tails would have gotten bored of this after the first night.
02:48Then everyone around Knuckles starts bullying him, accusing him of being scared of ghosts that he just said he didn't even believe in.
02:57This is just like Sonic X.
03:00Why doesn't Knuckles just leave?
03:02He does in fact storm off into the dark to try to prove he's brave to people who should already know that.
03:07Uncharacteristically, Sonic gets unhappy and tells him he didn't mean anything by it, like a little kid who miraculously realized he took his bullying too far.
03:18This is at least better than how he treats Antoine in Sadie M.
03:21And treats Knuckles in Sonic Battle.
03:24But if he was enough of an asshole to taunt him with something he'd know was a lie, then how is he sad that he's taking off?
03:31This story is so boring that it's doing nothing but reminding you of other continuities.
03:37Espyo isn't the paranoid and cautious character he's supposed to be, and instead tells Sonic not to worry.
03:44He's right that usually what could hurt Knuckles out there, and he just needs to blow off some steam.
03:51But it should be Charmy saying this.
03:54What's the point of making it Espyo?
03:56Sure, it's different.
03:57It doesn't come off like it was done on purpose to be creative, though.
04:02I can say this about a lot of ways the characters weren't always like the games and other continuities.
04:06There's nothing objectively bad about optimism in a character.
04:11That's the tricky thing about when other continuities aren't accurate with a character.
04:16Personality traits on their own are subjective in quality, because even negative traits can still be entertaining and relatable to people.
04:23Seeing a character that is usually serious and pessimistic be the opposite without any explanation and context is creepy to me.
04:31It feels like he's been hit with the brainwashing right to make him happy.
04:35Espyo's a ninja, and ninjas are meant to be cool.
04:39Anyone would see him ask what could hurt Knuckles out here and assume immediately that something will hurt Knuckles out here.
04:45So it makes a fool out of him.
04:47It's better marketing to make a fool out of Charmy instead, since he's unpopular.
04:52Also, having Espyo joke around unnecessarily takes away from his dignity, which is usually something you respect about him.
05:00So it's bad from a moving up positive trait.
05:04Knuckles punches a treat just because he's mad at his friends.
05:07This isn't new, either. This was done Sonic X.
05:11Except at least here he's just making a chunk of wood go flying instead of knocking down an entire tree.
05:18But that was actually aware of how strong he is.
05:21This kind of story so far could have not been told with Sonic characters, and it would have actually made more sense.
05:27To be fair, it was never outright confirmed in his first game that Knuckles left the trees in particular.
05:35But you could say the same about Sonic and Tails.
05:38That doesn't mean they should be depicted hurting trees.
05:41Eggman pollutes, so he's supposed to assume the heroes do like nature.
05:46Knuckles gets startled by hearing some noises, and he ends up hearing the shattering of a tree's roots.
05:51The trunk before him sinks, the ground shakes, and Knuckles gets knocked to the ground.
05:57He naturally wonders how that happened, and thankfully it's explained.
06:01He sees a metal tail slither out of sight, and assumes it's a machine of Eggman digging its way to the heroes.
06:09It's so cringe-worthy that Knuckles is stating the obvious to explain what's going on like it's an old Mike Gallagher-Archie story.
06:17Why didn't the writer have narration explain this?
06:19Knuckles runs after what must be an incredibly fast robot to not be caught up with in seconds.
06:27I would call it a badnik, but I don't know if it has an animal inside like it's supposed to yet.
06:32The robot keeps having trees sink into the earth, and Knuckles realizes he got turned around during the chase.
06:39Finally, the story's interesting.
06:42A huge tree rises up in front of him.
06:45He says Eggman's not getting this tree.
06:47It's too late to try to tell him he cares about trees.
06:51He jumps and punches to the ground to send a shockwave through the dirt, which makes the robot retreat.
06:57He sinks it to the ground, but instead of the story continuing with being exciting,
07:02it goes back to his friends who are shown boring me with Sonic wondering if his super-strong friend is alright.
07:07Finally, they get woken up by an earthquake.
07:12Except Vector, who has to be gotten up because he has headphones on.
07:16Somehow, Chami thinks it's a ghost he's getting rid of the trees.
07:20When he grew up in a world with Eggman the Captain Planet villain on it,
07:25Eggman faces them in a mecha that comes out of the ground.
07:28Why didn't he have it come out of the ground directly below them for a cheap shot against them?
07:34The story is lazy by having it be the Egg Dragoon for pandering so that the writer and artist for the occasional picture wouldn't have to come up with a new mecha design.
07:43As if it even matters what the mechas look like anyways.
07:46The monochrome art doesn't even bother to make it recognizable.
07:52Eggman brags that he was planning to get rid of the trees so he could build a new robot factory.
07:57And why didn't he just build it in an empty field? Or desert?
08:02Because ever since Sonic 1, he's had a fetish for causing environmental damage for no reason.
08:08It'd be out of character if he didn't do that.
08:10But it's a kind of outlandish thing that makes them poorly written because we don't know why.
08:16If someone's willing to acknowledge that Captain Planet doesn't write his films properly, then the same should be said of Eggman.
08:23I thought Eggman knew where Sonic and his friends were.
08:26And that assumption made it come off as menacing.
08:29But instead he's just a clown who's putting himself through a lot of hard work he didn't have to.
08:34Sonic's at least angry when taunting Eggman so that he's still cool.
08:38So that's the bare minimum.
08:41The machine finally starts doing something again.
08:44It lifts a whole group of fallen trees on its back to start throwing trees at the heroes.
08:50Good, I don't think this happened before.
08:53Despite the fact that this action would have telegraphed itself, Sonic's the only one who isn't hit by one of the trees.
09:00Aspio has fast reflexes because it's a speed type.
09:03You'd think he would have dodged at least.
09:05As usual, I had to assume Sonic's friends had rings keeping them from getting injured or worse by the trees.
09:13And Sonic uncharacteristically wonders if Eggman's going to win.
09:16When it's the very beginning of the fight.
09:19It's just a mecha.
09:21He wins against all of them.
09:22Who cares?
09:23It's nothing but characters with plot armor fighting it.
09:27So there's no real tension.
09:29I only think this is great because the tree throwing mecha idea is new.
09:34The reason Knuckles hadn't dug his way back up right away was that he was moved around so he didn't know which way was up.
09:40So he kept digging down until he fell into a black tunnel.
09:43The dialogue here is annoying.
09:46I wish there wasn't any of it.
09:49He eventually sees a monster that's immune to his punches.
09:52It explains the way it looks.
09:55But there's so much to the way it looks.
09:57That I ended up just giving up and picturing the big ghost from SE2.
10:02Not the giant one.
10:03I mean the one with the closed, black colored mouth.
10:07Knuckles gets carried to a queen.
10:09The pacing of the story being needlessly slow as it's being dark.
10:13When it's a guy with plot armor who's fought plenty of ghosts before this point.
10:18The book must have tried too hard and been convoluted when it came to the way the spirit queen looked.
10:23Because I never actually pictured her the way she was described.
10:27I just picture a human wearing flowers in her hair in a green dress.
10:32Like I would rather just get a move on as fast as possible.
10:35Knuckles finds out these are forest spirits.
10:37And the one he met in the tunnel was the spirit of the tree he had punched.
10:41Coincidentally.
10:41He finds out that because they're magical creatures.
10:45The giant tree in the forest keeps getting weaker as the forest keeps being torn up.
10:50Knuckles has lectured that he's been damaging it for years.
10:54Which has to mean this is on Angel Island.
10:57Or that this is another universe where he was never a guardian.
11:00Because why would he keep going to the same forest otherwise?
11:04Knuckles says sorry and the mecha gets fought in an unimaginative way.
11:09The attacks of Espio keep getting flocked by a tree.
11:12Eventually Knuckles comes back and raises his hands.
11:16An army of ghost lights goes out of the ground to fly into the cockpit and scare Eggman.
11:21Why did they wait until after Knuckles raised his hands to do this?
11:27Eggman doesn't just realize that the ghosts are doing nothing to him directly.
11:31Just keeping him from seeing out of the cockpit.
11:34He blasts open the hatch instead of just continuing to try to fight the heroes anyways in the apparently invincible mecha.
11:40That normally Zon could have defeated by himself by just attacking weak spots without needing a deus ex machina.
11:49Instead Eggman slips and falls off the top of the dragoon.
11:53The branches of the giant tree grab him to stop his fall for no reason when it was just going to fling him across the forest.
12:00So it could have just waited for him to finish falling so he'd get hurt from that and then throw him.
12:05The narration says that he was thrown into oblivion.
12:08Though since this isn't canon, it could have killed him for all it mattered.
12:13There's a boring last little part to the story with some lame lines at the end no one could take seriously.
12:20Knuckles wouldn't say he's haunted when he's not.
12:23This story had a boringly uncreative premise with Knuckles getting bullied.
12:28Until Knuckles saw the robot snake burying the trees and was taken to an underground society's monarch.
12:34Which reminds me of STC and Archie.
12:36He meets some dryads who don't want the forest to be destroyed.
12:40Which is a ripoff of a Fleetway story.
12:43The spirits didn't just look like trees though.
12:46Although if they did, their designs would have actually been memorable.
12:50Because I would have instantly imagined them.
12:52And they effortlessly got talked into sabotaging the creative mecha using real villain.
12:57Which is better than the nerfs.
12:59The concept of a mecha throwing trees at Sonic also felt new.
13:04But the utter incompetence of everyone but Sonic tried bringing things down.
13:09Eggman included.
13:10Why would he not just keep using the mecha to fight the heroes?
13:15So what if the ghosts were in the cockpit when they weren't doing anything to him?
13:19He was turned into a coward worse than he ever was in the games.
13:23And it wasn't satisfying because it's not like he injured anyone.
13:26For the most part, the story was creative and cool enough to meet the kind of standards I want the Sonic story to have.
13:33They even had an Eggman fight to make it Sonic-like.
13:36But not only do I hate that it takes the dryad way too seriously when it starts carrying Knuckles.
13:41Which ruins the pacing.
13:42It starts out boring and lame.
13:44Because IAW already had Knuckles go camping with Sonic and Tails.
13:48And so IAW and AOSD agent Archie already had Sonic and Tails in front of a campfire with Sonic telling ghost stories.
13:56It could have just started the story with Knuckles already in the woods witnessing the tree destruction.
14:02It's also depressing to see Knuckles get taunted by his so-called friend.
14:06So most of the time I didn't like the story because of the tone.
14:10Though it wasn't nearly as bad as last time.
14:13It's already off-putting that it's got no visuals.
14:15Why do these books make it even worse by being depressing too?
14:20This is why it took so long to review these.
14:22The story shouldn't have happened anyways because the heroes were on their second night in a row camping for no reason.
14:29Why would all these people camp out more than one night in a row?
