00:00Sonic & Knuckles book.
00:02Ooh, I like that the emeralds in this cover doesn't look like it does in the game, because that's unique.
00:07Not better, but still good.
00:10It starts out boringly with Sonic on patrol around the great forests again,
00:14which would be a waste of time if not holes underground like it should be.
00:18This story wastes my time recapping the premise of Sad EM,
00:22when it's not likely someone who's reading this would be unaware of its existence,
00:27and ends up pointless.
00:29The cover this time gave no hint that it'd be a Sad EM inspired story,
00:34but all you have to establish that is show the Sad EM characters.
00:38We're not stupid.
00:40That was tremendously boring.
00:42Sonic feels dizzy and leans against a tree.
00:45I guess it makes sense that he could only be immune to dizziness while he's spinning himself on purpose,
00:51because magic is weird.
00:53Could be weirdly specific programming of magic.
00:56He confusingly blames the chili dog overeating he did and sees a green glow around him,
01:03and assumes it's a hallucination because of it.
01:06Somehow.
01:07He somehow sees a vision of Angel Island and Knuckles.
01:11He cheerfully greets him, but doesn't hear him.
01:14It's sweet that he has such a good first impression because of this.
01:19He calls Knuckles cool and buddy, and says he's almost as fast as him.
01:24For once, a writer of another continuity acknowledges this.
01:28Then he has a vision of Eggman and calls him outnumbered,
01:32and sees a huge beam shooter appear in his hands that has no effect on Sonic.
01:37I can't take any of this seriously because there's no reason for him to have these visions.
01:42At least this never happened before though, so I'm engaged.
01:46But this adaptation is lame already.
01:49He sees his friends so he'll get shot by the beams,
01:53and gets a vision of a group of green glowing stones.
01:57I wouldn't expect Sonic to admit that jewels are beautiful,
02:01but it is nice that he's appreciating them.
02:03Then the story gets really boring by wasting time reiterating the backstory of Eggman's fortress,
02:09and taking an insultingly long time to give his exposition.
02:14Eggman says some things are back in his dimension,
02:17and there's a ripoff of the who's on first joke because he says what?
02:21Which would never be in Sad AM.
02:24And that's only an insult because it finds this boring.
02:27He was talking about the Chaos Emeralds.
02:30Somehow, Snively didn't know about them when Eggman does.
02:34Even though they're both from the same place.
02:38He says the Emeralds live in a dimension occupying the same space as Mobius.
02:43And of course he doesn't explain why they ever appear in it.
02:47Because that would be filling in a plot hole in the important continuity.
02:51It's impossible to know when they'll appear on a floating island
02:54that moves back and forth between dimensions.
02:57So Angel Island's in the Special Zone usually.
03:00That would have been a really good idea of Tikal to have.
03:04So that's something new.
03:07But that means that Knuckles only needs to be a guardian if there's people living near where he is.
03:12It already makes him useless most of the time that nobody lives on his island.
03:17But it means he'd have nothing to worry about if he wasn't guarding the Master Emerald.
03:23So if it was like this in the games, there would really be no problem with him not guarding the Emeralds and hang out with Sonic.
03:33Eggman can feel the Emeralds because he's attuned to his energy.
03:37It never explains why, so this is stupid.
03:41But at least it's something that never happened before.
03:44He says they can alter the future.
03:47I already assumed what he wanted to do with them, so he doesn't need to waste my time explaining it.
03:52Every single scene with just these two is padding.
03:56He's not entertaining.
03:58Sonic conveniently wakes up in bed.
04:01Why does the story reiterate what Sally's position is?
04:04It never even matters to the plot that she is the princess.
04:08It's easy to assume that he follows her plans because he thinks they're good ideas.
04:13If anything, it's better not to explain that she's royalty.
04:17Because some people have made a mountain out of molehill about it saying he's obeying authority and should never do that.
04:22Even though it's functionally no different than him following Kales' plan in Essay 2.
04:27And no one bitched about that.
04:29So him following her ideas would be fine if she wasn't a princess and he was the official leader?
04:37Somehow, Sonic wonders how he got back to not home.
04:41Tails wants to see him and asks if he's okay.
04:45And it turns out he got to be the one to take him home.
04:48He says he was following him when he went on patrol, but he was always a little behind him.
04:53At least the writer knows he's fast.
04:56And knows his place.
04:58But the pacing is terrible in this story.
05:01I hate that Tails thinks he has to say he hopes he's not mad at him for following him.
05:06Sonic says he isn't mad at him and calls him Buddy.
05:09But condescends to him that he doesn't think it's a great idea for a guy who can fly to follow him on patrol.
05:16Bunny shows up and it wastes time recapping what she is too.
05:21Why does the narration reiterate that Roeder's an inventor?
05:25We'll find that out anyways if he's not a worthless character in this book.
05:29Unlike Inside AM, the narration says his gadgets had saved the heroes many times.
05:36Antoine says Sally was worried about Sonic.
05:39And the narration wastes time reiterating what he is.
05:43Sonic says he's okay and thanks Tails and tells him everything.
05:48Fortunately, they believe him.
05:51Though for all I know, it was only because Sally already knew about the Legend of the Chaos Emeralds.
05:56Why does she need to tell Sonic about them?
05:59We don't need to be given the same exposition twice.
06:02She says they can infect things at random all of a sudden.
06:06And almost anything can happen when they're near.
06:09That could only lead to convenience-led writing.
06:12I'm sure it won't result in a bunch of wacky and acid-trip-worthy things happening.
06:18Like an elephant showing up.
06:19And flying.
06:20And pink dust everywhere.
06:22So I say this.
06:24She says all good could be wiped out because of them.
06:28Sally says Sonic only saw a possible future.
06:32The legend, which she never explains what she knows, says that if heroes get the stones,
06:38all evil in Mobius could be eliminated.
06:41But I guess that won't happen because it would end the Sad AM books continuity.
06:45So thanks a lot for spoiling that the heroes won't get all of the emeralds.
06:49And the idea of all evil being eliminated on the planet reminds me of Eggman's origin story.
06:55Which was originally gonna be in Sad AM.
06:59Why didn't they go with that?
07:02I read about what could have been.
07:04And a lot of it was really good.
07:06Sonic says happily that they could get rid of Eggman with the emeralds.
07:11Why does he say this?
07:13How is he so stupid as to think that he couldn't have done it alone with his speed?
07:18It's easier to believe that heroes have a no-killer rule considering that and Eggman's base having a set known location on the planet.
07:25This is why his base should never be like that.
07:28It should either be the Death Egg that's constantly on the move or on a satellite.
07:33The point is why would Sonic be okay with using emeralds to kill Eggman just because of the method.
07:40When he's presumably not gonna be in the Eggmobile at the time.
07:43So that would be breaking the rule.
07:45That he's supposed to attack him when he's not in the Eggmobile.
07:49He should have said, by getting rid of all of the evil in the world, it would turn Eggman good.
07:56Then I wouldn't be asking why he's such a hypocrite here.
08:00Then the story resorts to more boring padding by switching to Eggman's point of view for no reason.
08:06Eggman tells Snively to hold down the fortress and chuckles because that was his idea of a joke when he literally is telling him to hold down the fort.
08:15So what's funny about that?
08:18It's convenient that he's even portraying the style of Eggman as being willing to chuckle at his own joke.
08:23That's oddly likeable.
08:25The scene blatantly wasted my time being worthless after this.
08:29Eggman had left with the robot army because the emeralds were so important that he thought he had to lead the mission himself.
08:37His inner emerald radar tells him exactly where to go to see Angel Island.
08:43He lampshades that it picked a perfect time and he and the robots get tractor beam to the island for no apparent reason.
08:50That's insultingly forced.
08:52At least this is the first time this ever happened in the series.
08:56The tractor beam sounds cool.
08:58He sees a figure moving very quickly and puts on a fake pleasant act wanting to discuss Jules with him.
09:06He should have said more than just that because he had no reason to think that would help him.
09:12Knuckles rams into him and destroys three of his robots.
09:17Already this was done wrong by having Knuckles get a chance to start attacking before Eggman could get his lion.
09:23While this is the realistic and respectful of Knuckles' outcome, it now makes no sense that he's going to get to trick him.
09:30Logically, he would kill him right now without giving him a chance to explain because you know a thief would say anything to save himself here.
09:37In the illustration of it, Knuckles is smirking inexplicably and his arms barely raised as he punches him in his weak spot.
09:45I assumed he did a glide into him instead.
09:48The flash of light senses any impact his head would have had against him.
09:53If Eggman had a way to fire lasers himself like he couldn't Archie, he would have simply killed Knuckles here.
10:00He had no reason to think he'd need Knuckles.
10:03Or that using him would be the better way than the way he always goes by.
10:07You could just not have Knuckles be face to face with Eggman in the first place.
10:12Have him meet a camera with a screen with Eggman on it.
10:16So it still could have written this properly.
10:18Eggman tries to make himself look good by telling his robots to cease fire.
10:23But realistically, this would have just been his undoing.
10:26It sure is convenient that Knuckles wastes time like a shitty guardian explaining why he's bothering him.
10:32This should have been gone over in his training.
10:35Knuckles not only lets him get out what any thief would say to save himself.
10:40He even tells him his name for no reason.
10:43Knuckles gets told he's the good king Robotnik who's kind and caring.
10:48He would have not believed him because a real good person wouldn't brag about that.
10:53And because he has black and red eyes.
10:56So he should have asked him about that.
10:58And gotten told that he had no control over what the new eyes his doctor gave him looked like.
11:03And no way to change their looks.
11:05And even then, he would be instinctively compelled to think of him as evil for them.
11:09Because that's just how people think.
11:11When you grow up not having any companionship, you don't get to learn to trust anyone.
11:16Trust is something you learn.
11:18Knuckles didn't even know the name of Mobius.
11:21Eggman wouldn't know what Knuckles does here because he just told him.
11:25Knuckles would wonder why he said that.
11:28This is a waste of time.
11:30Eggman lies that he wants to share the power of the Emerald with him to make sure no harm would ever come to the Mobius.
11:38Knuckles is skeptical because he travels with an army of metal soldiers.
11:42Even though even a good king would do that for the sake of protecting himself just in case.
11:47He'd already have assumed that.
11:50The Swapots used to be an army to protect the king.
11:54Eggman tells him that Sonic's the evil one that he has these robots to protect him from.
12:00I get the reason why Knuckles doesn't kill him immediately just in case.
12:04He doesn't want to risk making a mistake just in case he isn't lying.
12:08It still should have explained that Knuckles doesn't believe him.
12:11And is only keeping him around just in case trying to test his character.
12:16Sonic 3 not explaining that is the whole reason Knuckles got betrayed as an idiot later on.
12:22When Shari was stupid for not killing him, but it wasn't because he's stupid that he spared him.
12:27But he was stupid for letting him talk.
12:30He should have knocked him out and tied him up at least.
12:33If he was the type to instantly start attacking an intruder, it'd be because he had already made up his mind about him.
12:41And he would have been trained to always assume the worst and nothing but the worst.
12:45You'd think that he'd be specifically taught to not keep a thief around.
12:49He would have destroyed his other robots just in case, saying he doesn't need them anyways.
12:54He also would have demanded to visit his kingdom separate from him to see if he's really a good ruler first.
13:01While keeping him trapped in a room.
13:03All he'd have to do is know for sure.
13:06He has no reason to just take his word for it.
13:09I hate that Tails is written to get told he can't go with Sonic.
13:13Sonic Underground later on is already a Sonic 3 adaptation where Tails isn't in it.
13:20So this doesn't even have novelty value for me.
13:23Even though I think it is the first time this ever happened.
13:26It's not like Tails really does much in that game anyways.
13:31So you don't really notice a difference in this story.
13:34You'd think at some point Tails would point out that he can fly really high, so he wouldn't ever be in danger anyways.
13:40Sonic says he's going to go on a very dangerous adventure because he doesn't know what those stones could do.
13:46The ninja they explain that the reason they're sending Sonic there and not a robot that could be sensed his death no problem is that they assume Eggman's there.
13:54Tails for once is justified in being worried about Sonic because of what he just said about the Emeralds.
14:00He calls Tails Pal.
14:02It seems like overcompensating that he calls him Pal and Buddy more than anybody else when he spends the least amount of time with him and really his only interaction with him is saying to stay home because he's worthless.
14:14I hate how rude and bossy Antoine is to Sonic.
14:18Better him than Sally.
14:20Sonic, Antoine, and Rotor help pack up supplies as Sally studies a map of the forest.
14:25They shouldn't think they need supplies.
14:28Sonic is fast.
14:30Really, Sonic doesn't even need them to slow him down.
14:33He should just go to the island and run all around it and find the Emeralds in seconds.
14:38At least in Robotropolis it could be explained that he never knows when he'd need Bunny's super strength or Nicole's hacking power.
14:46But even then he could just run back home and go get them in seconds.
14:51What does Sally think his friends could possibly accomplish that he would need that would make up for that?
14:57Sure, they could save him a little bit of time searching if they all search in different places.
15:02That didn't happen last time.
15:04She should say that.
15:06She bores me giving exposition that Eggman already did about the Emeralds.
15:11So Bunny and Sally both have the idea to start their search where Sonic had its vision.
15:15Tails wishes them good luck and Sonic calls him Bud and Antoine just has to be written to be rude to Sonic again.
15:23Why in the hell are they written to just walk through the woods for several hours when even the previous books established that Sonic couldn't have them form a chain with one holding him and he could just run to his destination in seconds with them?
15:36Idiots!
15:37It wasted my time because of this.
15:40Why the hell is Sonic the only one who was sent to the island?
15:44I thought these people were going to justify being in the story by this being the first Sonic 3 adaptation to have them on the island.
15:52I assume the writers are going to have them get there with a plane in time.
15:56Otherwise, why even show them in the story?
16:00They wouldn't get to do much on the island, but at least they'd be there.
16:04Because Sonic alone came to the island, you'd be better off skipping pages and only reading again when it looks like it's doing something new.
16:12It's completely out of character that the same guy who let Eggman talk to him after one time he rammed into him would not stop and let Sonic explain himself too.
16:22Him being evil from the start would have made more sense.
16:26There's nothing creative about this fight.
16:28After Knuckles stops fighting him to explain himself, Eggman sends SWAT bots after Sonic.
16:34At least that's different from the Fleetway adaptation this is reminding me of.
16:38Ugh, why does it go to Sally's point of view?
16:42I could have assumed his friends were worrying about him.
16:46You literally never needed to show any scenes from their points of view.
16:50Sally tells Tails not to worry and they find Rotor hours later with an emerald locator that can let them locate the island.
16:58But they already know where it is.
17:00I thought he was going to show them a plane.
17:02Like he has an Archie.
17:04So you'd think he would already have one.
17:06They had a plane in the Secret Scrolls episode.
17:10What a stupid walrus.
17:12How could he have not thought to have a plane already?
17:14He was incredibly awesome in these books so far.
17:18It cuts back to Sonic and at least explains that Knuckles is wondering if Eggman lied.
17:23Sonic spin dashes through these pathetic poor man SWAT bots.
17:29So there goes any chance of this accurately portraying what a satan version of Sonic 3 would be like.
17:35Who knows what clever strategy he would have come up with to defeat them.
17:39Maybe he should have led them into a lake.
17:41That's not hard to come up with.
17:43Knuckles sees how quick Sonic can spin and figures out that Sonic didn't hit him with his full force when he hit him earlier.
17:50Then Knuckles should know better by now.
17:52Sonic explains things to Knuckles.
17:55Their fight's over by the way.
17:57Sonic Underground had a way better fight between them.
18:00I guess Eggman's out of robots as Sonic's able to fully explain to Knuckles.
18:05Also, Eggman can't stop him from talking because then he'd give away to Knuckles that he's evil.
18:10A green flash fills the jungle and both Sonic and Eggman vanish with Sonic not being on the floating island anymore.
18:18Sonic sees a barren landscape around him covered in a green mist that blocks out of the sky and the narration describes him as seeing the bodies of his friends.
18:28This is pointless shock value.
18:30He had a vision of them getting shot by beams already.
18:33This writer shouldn't have been allowed to have one story per book because they had to stretch it out to make it last every time.
18:41You can have new creative concepts in a shorter story.
18:45All more length does is make it more boring and forced.
18:48I just keep checking out of this story.
18:51No plot progression until he finally sees some emeralds.
18:55Sonic can't grab the emeralds because they're only an illusion.
18:58He falls down a mountain in front of Eggman.
19:01The narration talks as if both Sonic and Eggman were sent to the future and not just Sonic.
19:07Why can't it just instantly cut to the other heroes using the island locator?
19:12Some worthless padding precedes that.
19:15Sonic tells Rotary he did a nice job as usual, so that's nice.
19:20Boring predictable stuff happens after this.
19:23Why did Rotary use the invention more than once?
19:26He would have only used it at the spot Sonic was at.
19:29It goes back to Sonic's point of view with some more boring padding.
19:33Eggman somehow decides to waste his time making a gloating speech when it'd be smarter for him to just stay quiet and relentlessly try to attack him no matter what.
19:42Like in the games.
19:44Rotor's band of green light breaks through the mist and the two of them reappear next to Knuckles in the present.
19:51Sonic states the obvious and the band of light makes an opening appear in the boulder which contains the emeralds.
19:58That is a way better way of hiding them than in the games.
20:02If Knuckles had the Master Emerald hidden in a boulder, it never would have gotten stolen.
20:08The narration seriously says that Knuckles had not only never seen them before, but they were the only thing he was guarding and not the Master Emerald.
20:18I would have been impressed by this, but I already saw this in Archie.
20:22Gee, maybe if the writer of the American Manual didn't lie that he was only guarding the Chaos Emeralds to avoid spoiling the Master Emerald, we wouldn't have this happen.
20:32The blame should be dealt where it's due.
20:34It's not like it really matters at this point anyways, because this was before it was established out of complete nowhere that the Master Emerald neutralizes the Chaos Emeralds.
20:44So they're functionally no different than each other right now.
20:46Eggman runs towards the Emeralds and inexplicably reveals his evil purposes for getting them.
20:52So Knuckles glides into him and apologizes to Sonic for doubting him.
20:56You'd think Sonic would have also attacked Eggman.
21:00Because he's faster and Eggman's his main enemy.
21:04But instead this is framed like he's preventing the bad future.
21:08That was a real AOSCH moment on Eggman's part.
21:12Also, just because Eggman proved he was evil doesn't really prove that Sonic has no ill intentions for the Emeralds.
21:18He should still be suspicious.
21:20If you really want to stretch the meaning of ill intentions.
21:24Sonic wants to get rid of Eggman.
21:27And that could be whined about his murder.
21:30And even if he decides to brainwash them to being good instead, that would be seen as evil too.
21:36The island shakes as the animals arbitrarily send out a power search.
21:42Rhoda's invention can't absorb the energy that travels along its being and goes dead with a shower of sparks.
21:48The tilting island sends everyone there falling in front of Sally.
21:52Who yells that Sonic's hurt.
21:54And Eggman goes home because he's outnumbered.
21:57It sure is convenient that the island was close enough to the ground that the fall only hurt them enough to knock Sonic out for a few minutes and hurt his head.
22:05When I pictured the island as a little higher up than that.
22:09So they all had rings to protect them.
22:11But Sonic had less rings so he got hurt.
22:14But still not the amount he should have.
22:17It's new that Knuckles left the island and met Sonic's friends after the Sonic 3 story.
22:22It's not an amazing concept though.
22:25Nothing is done with it.
22:27Sally says it's good to see Sonic's alright and Tails states the obvious that all of his friends were worried.
22:33Sonic thanks Rhoda and calls him Buddy.
22:36And Knuckles reveals out of nowhere that he's stuck in their dimension.
22:40I have to assume this means his island vanished back to the special zone.
22:44Sally says Knuckles could always stay with them.
22:47And Sonic says they'll help him get home.
22:49So I look forward to seeing him in the next book.
22:52Knuckles says that when he gets home he'll use the emeralds to get rid of Eggman.
22:57Oh so that means he'll never be written to reunite with the emeralds. Got it.
23:01The emeralds will never be used like they were in the games.
23:04And we're just there as some weird plot convenient stones to introduce Knuckles.
23:09The story's over now.
23:11And it just has some padding narration until it gets there.
23:14This story by Michael Taytelbaum was a boring unneeded Sonic 3 ripoff that doesn't show all of the levels.
23:23So it's not even really an adaptation.
23:25And confuses me by giving Sonic visions for no reason.
23:29And putting him and Eggman in a possible future where Eggman got to abuse the emeralds with a big ray gun.
23:35Why'd he need the emeralds to make a big beam blasting ray gun?
23:40Rotor made that an Archie.
23:42And the Vision has his friends dead just for shock value.
23:46Considering that he gets sent back to the present anyways.
23:49Most of what's new here is confusing.
23:53Eggman somehow decides to confess his evil intentions.
23:57Which is framed as why Knuckles stops him from getting the emeralds.
24:00Which he could do because he wasn't as competent as Game Eggman.
24:04Who flew after the emeralds with an egg mobile with a shock device.
24:08So that was lame.
24:10There's also loads of padding.
24:12Because the 7am characters are in it.
24:14But don't ever get to set foot on the island in a Sonic 3 plot for the first time.
24:19The writer can't even get that one simple little thing right.
24:23The story drags out forever the whole time.
24:26Being especially boring when it steals ideas from Sonic 3.
24:30When that was guaranteed to be a better experience because it's a better medium.
24:33I did love the new idea that Angel Island with the emeralds keeps going back and forth between the Special Zone.
24:40Which is left unnamed.
24:42And that explains why Eggman hasn't found the emeralds in all his years ruling Mobius.
24:47So this is a lot more good care put into establishing Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds than a certain continuation had.
24:54Where I just have to assume Eggman never found the floating island because it was always hidden in the clouds.
24:59The island's disappearance and Rotor's inexplicable lack of a plane gave him an excuse to fire an awesome blast of energy that released the emeralds.
25:08And resolve the plot.
25:10Although that was unusually irresponsible because the blast could have easily taken out Sonic and Knuckles before they would have seen it coming.
25:17Knuckles had a good if boring personality with respectfully written formal dialogue.
25:23He has a serious personality like in SA2.
25:26And isn't an insanely short tempered person.
25:29And was able to consider that Eggman was lying.
25:32Although too late to be believable.
25:34Again it shows how dumb the plot point of him being tricked into fighting Sonic was.
25:39Because if he was the type to inexplicably let the bad guy with evil looking eyes explain himself even though he was also the type to attack on sight.
25:47Then he would have traded Sonic with the same leniency.
25:50So even if this was the first time I experienced that plot point it would still be a bad story to me.
25:55It would have been better to scrap the first draft bullshit where he got tricked and simply have Eggman brainwash him.
26:02Or put a bomb on him forcing him to fight Sonic.
26:05Which would also make Eggman look competent without undermining Knuckles permanently.
26:10Or at least should not have Eggman meet Knuckles.
26:13Because he stayed in a hovercraft that was too high for Knuckles to reach.
26:17He had no reason to exhaust himself walking on the island itself.
26:21And he hates nature and is out of shape.
26:24If he was the type to have Snively hold down the fort.
26:28Why did they leave Snively behind in the Secret Scrolls episode?
26:34Why did the Tractor Beam of Angel Island arbitrarily decide to send Eggman to it?
26:41I understand sending Sonic to it because it actually needed him.
26:45But it knew Eggman was evil.
26:47I guess it's because Eggman has an emerald radar.
26:51So that's a magical ability.
26:53So it only sends people to the island if they have magical abilities.
26:58Keep up.
27:00And that's amazing.
27:01So we can find out that there is a plot that has evolved in the north as well.
27:03So when it's part of the island we're able to find!
27:05Now we're going to be able to find out.
27:06We'll just take the right to you.
27:07Let's go.
27:09You can find out that there is a plot.
27:10We can find out that there is a plot.
27:11We can't find out it.
27:12Sure about it.
27:13If we can find you.
