00:02The story starts out describing a monster trying to lunge at Sonic's face.
00:08And it turns out it's just a video that Sonic, Tails, and Amy are getting shown by Professor Pickle,
00:14who says it's the first proof that the Dark Guy and Minions have reappeared,
00:18even though they've been receiving reports of attacks for almost two weeks.
00:23That's ridiculous! Everyone has cell phones!
00:26And why is he saying Minions instead of Monsters?
00:30Both words are equally hard to take seriously.
00:33And they're an extension of Dark Guy himself, right?
00:38So they're not really Minions.
00:41He's only drawing attention to the idea that the word Monster might be seen as Kitty by trying to use a different one.
00:48How would he know they're called Minions instead of Monsters?
00:52Security cameras would be a lot more likely to record proof of these Monsters
00:57because they're nearly everywhere and they wouldn't require someone to be far enough away
01:01and brave enough to start recording a monster while it's bothering someone else.
01:06And since it turns out this isn't taking place during Sonic Unleashed,
01:10which would have kept things simple,
01:13there better be a good explanation for why there's Dark Guy and Monsters again.
01:17There could be because this is a series with Wendy Witchcard in it,
01:21so witches are canon.
01:23I'm betting the actual excuse will be confusing and convoluted compared to that one.
01:28I'd rather the story start by explaining such a baffling premise right away
01:32so people won't just think of an explanation first just to get disappointed.
01:36Why is the professor wasting time telling them stuff he'd know Sonic already knows?
01:43Sonic shows off his speed just to show off.
01:46Unlike the first line of his theme song that says,
01:49I don't show off, don't criticize.
01:52I never really thought that song was totally accurate to Sonic's character
01:55because of the line,
01:56don't criticize being contradicted many times in the games.
02:01As early as I'm calling Eggman a giant talking egg.
02:04And I doubt Sonic only criticized in the dubs of the cutscenes.
02:09Sometimes Sonic looked disapprovingly at someone,
02:11so why wouldn't he have been insulting in the Japanese script too?
02:15Amy's out of character by saying that Sonic's got to do more than just show off
02:19instead of putting total faith in him and fangirling,
02:22like she didn't Unleashed.
02:24Her being a fangirl of him wasn't something that needed to be corrected.
02:28It's a good thing,
02:29because it reminds us that he's supposed to be cool.
02:32And she can still be cool and fangirl over him.
02:37Tails explains that he's been making a better light-based gadget
02:40to help destroy the monsters since last time they showed up.
02:44A super camera.
02:46Oh, so they're going to be even easier to deal with this time.
02:49Where's the tension again?
02:51The sun goes down,
02:53and Sonic turns into a werehog,
02:54despite the fact that this time,
02:56he didn't go through the thing he did at the start of Unleashed.
03:00No, going to a new wellspring of dark Gaia energy doesn't explain it.
03:06Amy crying out in fear of Sonic the werehog
03:09is extremely lame from how stilted it is.
03:12Amy wants to help,
03:13but gets told it's too dangerous,
03:15even though she has a hammer,
03:17which tacks in the same method as Sonic punching the monsters as the werehog,
03:21and she's left behind.
03:23This isn't Sonic Adventure 2 anymore.
03:25I would assume Sonic would have learned
03:28from her surviving so long on Adventure in Sonic Heroes
03:31that she's not a wimp.
03:33Tails has a backpack with a battery and cords down his arms
03:37connecting to two big gloves that can blast light beams.
03:42Why doesn't Tails make himself useful with gadgets way more often?
03:46Sonic ends up saying he's itchy because of his transformation.
03:50They take a little while to find the monsters
03:52for the sake of being realistic,
03:53but it should have had him find them faster,
03:55because that was boring.
03:57It could have just said how long it took.
04:00Eventually Sonic reassures a woman who's pulling out her own hair,
04:03and she's in a bad enough mood that she's rude to him
04:05since she doesn't know it's Sonic.
04:07And also she's possessed by dark Gaia minions, I guess,
04:10because god forbid they just have civilians be upset
04:12because of the actual premise.
04:14The monsters show up,
04:16and the pacing is way too slow
04:17for describing ideas that are ripped off from the game
04:20with no creativity at all.
04:22Nothing worth talking about happens
04:23until the monsters start running up the wall of a building.
04:27A dark energy blast prevents Sonic from following them,
04:30and Tails wonders if he's okay.
04:33I like that Sonic's ready to be mad about it.
04:36The pacing goes back to being shit.
04:38It takes forever to get back to being interesting.
04:41They go back to Professor Pickle,
04:42and Amy spent all night reading the ancient Gaia manuscript
04:46because she wanted to be useful,
04:49but didn't just insist on running along with them
04:51with her hammer for some reason.
04:54Why would she get anything out of it
04:56that the archaeology professor didn't?
04:58That'd be so merry soon.
05:01Sonic at least pats her on the shoulder.
05:03She says the monsters might be trying to look for someone
05:06to take Dark Gaia's place.
05:09I thought the monsters were Dark Gaia, though.
05:12Because they all went to a beacon.
05:16I thought they were a hive-minded Dark Gaia.
05:18Tails uses a lightburst from his backpack
05:21that reminds me of a Luigi's Mansion game.
05:23No wonder I was more underwhelmed than impressed.
05:26Because Sonic's not supposed to be ripping off Mario,
05:29because it's what it got popular from rebelling against.
05:32The lack of rebelling against Mario
05:34in the ad campaigns in Japan
05:35because Sega over there liked Nintendo
05:38is part of why the Genesis and Classic games
05:40flopped over there.
05:42It's so easy to find out
05:43why Sega of America's efforts back then
05:45were mandatory for Sonic still existing to this day.
05:49And the few people who question that
05:50haven't done research for even a few seconds
05:53out of spite just because it comes from Japan.
05:56Sales figures in Japan
05:57for like every Sonic game alone suck.
06:00Japan has a third as many people as America,
06:02but its sales figures are bad
06:04even after you account for that.
06:06Anyways, Tails reveals a shadowy figure on the roof,
06:09calling the monsters back.
06:12Amy doesn't believe it's Dark Gaia,
06:14and Sonic doesn't believe the person
06:15who read the manuscripts.
06:18The story goes on to continue being so uncreative
06:21that it's not worth discussing.
06:23What do you think is happening?
06:25It's literally that.
06:27Sonic wonders if he can seal Dark Gaia again.
06:30Are you kidding me?
06:32He's supposed to be fast,
06:33and he never takes forever to get all the emeralds.
06:36Tails lampshades that the monsters
06:38aren't getting anything out of scaring people.
06:41He's the smart one,
06:42so we notice that every time the monsters run away,
06:44they run towards the same part of town.
06:47A strange voice calls out for Sonic
06:49the same way Amy always does,
06:51but nobody assumes it's Amy somehow.
06:54The monsters claw at the rocks underground in a cave
06:57to close off the opening to the cave,
06:59making Sonic separate it from Tails.
07:01Eventually, the leader of the Dark Gaia monsters
07:03tells Sonic that the call has been answered
07:06and hits the ceiling with a hammer to let him moonlight.
07:09And it turns out Amy had been overwhelmed
07:11with Dark Gaia energy.
07:13This is the same kind of plot point
07:15that even some of the fans had said
07:16they should have done with Unleashed.
07:18That it was a wasted opportunity
07:19that this never happened to any of Sonic's friends,
07:22so he'd actually care about it.
07:23And you get to see Sonic be especially shocked
07:26and unhappy about it.
07:28So, great idea,
07:30but it's not exactly amazing
07:32that it was come up with.
07:34I don't like when the narration
07:36calls Sonic the Werehog
07:37instead of just Sonic.
07:39It's good that he says sorry,
07:40but he should know it's impossible
07:42to talk someone out of being possessed
07:43by Dark Gaia energy.
07:45Because it's never happened before.
07:48Amy hits the ceiling and says now, Tails,
07:50and Tails uses light beams
07:52and the monsters end up getting destroyed.
07:55The Dark Gaia energy leaves her.
07:57So she just conveniently magically
07:59stops being evil
08:00just because Sonic said
08:01he should have asked for help.
08:04It's great to find out
08:04that someone other than just Sonic
08:06even can fight off Dark Gaia's influence.
08:10So that's finally established
08:11that's something that anyone can do
08:13if they're cool enough.
08:15It's not just Sonic being a creator's pet
08:17destroying the believability in the process.
08:19just for a few people to defend it
08:21because he's the protagonist
08:22instead of Sally.
08:24I mean, if Sally was in the same situation,
08:26people would be pissed.
08:27And rightfully so.
08:29Sonic also returns being normal again.
08:33Infuriatingly, the story ends
08:34without properly explaining
08:36why the hell Dark Gaia energy
08:38ever was able to escape
08:39from the core of the Earth
08:40from just this one cave
08:42that isn't nearly deep enough underground
08:44to justify it.
08:45Why did this take so long to happen?
08:47Was there an earthquake?
08:49No cave would be that deep
08:52that it would penetrate
08:53into the core of the Earth.
08:56They didn't spend that long
08:57going underground.
08:59They would be overheated if they were.
09:02How would it be only one cave
09:03that would do this?
09:05I thought there would be a new character
09:07who would have used magic
09:08to make this plot happen.
09:10It's also pretty lame
09:11that only Amy got possessed.
09:13They could have had a whole climax
09:15where all Sonic's friends were possessed.
09:19Shadow was a perfect candidate.
09:21I was figuring that the leader
09:23could have been Shadow
09:24or someone like him.
09:26Amy Lampshade said it was crazy
09:27for her to doubt Sonic.
09:30If the writer knew that,
09:31there was officially no excuse
09:32for writing it anyways.
09:33And she somehow thought
09:35Sonic thought she was a monster
09:37of her behavior in the story.
09:39She knows he saw her
09:40do way worse than this before.
09:43This is nothing.
09:44So why didn't she ask this question
09:46in games like Sonic Riders
09:47where she tried to hurt him
09:48with a sledgehammer
09:49for being smart?
09:51The story ends
09:52with Sonic calling her his friend.
09:54Every time Sonic is unsubtle enough
09:56to directly mention
09:57friends and friendships,
09:59he isn't being cool.
10:01You know,
10:02which is why the franchise
10:03got successful.
10:05Why isn't Amy or Tails
10:06talking like that?
10:08It's good for him
10:09to value teamwork
10:10and partners.
10:11It's even better for Shadow 2.
10:14But the Sonic
10:14from the first classic games
10:16would have never said
10:17the words friends,
10:18friendship,
10:18and teamwork.
10:20That's just making him
10:21imitate anime
10:22because it's Japanese
10:23instead of sticking
10:24to his identity
10:25that made him popular
10:26internationally.
10:28And he wasn't even
10:28popular in Japan.
10:30You can get across
10:31a message
10:32without being blatant
10:33with the dialogue.
10:35He could have simply said
10:36that the abilities
10:36of his friends
10:37are awesome
10:38and so trying to screw
10:39with them isn't smart.
10:41He should have said
10:42to Amy something like,
10:44with people like you
10:45around,
10:45it's easy to turn back.
10:47Because she already knows
10:48she's his friend.
10:50This story was about
10:51dark Gaia monsters
10:52showing up in one place
10:54despite the fact
10:54that it's not
10:55Sonic unleashed anymore.
10:57And it's never
10:57properly explained
10:58why.
10:59I just have to assume
11:00an earthquake
11:01opened up a hole
11:02leading to the core
11:03of the earth
11:03which is only possible
11:05because of an ancient
11:06witch.
11:08I'd be glad
11:08this isn't canon
11:09because if it was
11:10it made me wonder
11:11why this will never
11:12happen in the games.
11:13I respected the twist
11:15that justified
11:15using unleashed
11:16concepts again.
11:18Where Amy was put
11:19in a bad mood
11:20by dark Gaia energy
11:21taking advantage
11:21of how condescending
11:22Sonic was being
11:23to her base
11:24on how lame
11:24she used to be.
11:26Sonic just wasn't
11:27genre savvy
11:27at the fact
11:28that Amy was going
11:29to be written
11:29to be more intelligent
11:30than she's supposed
11:31to be just because
11:32she's a girl
11:32and so they're too
11:33afraid to keep
11:34her airheadedness
11:35nowadays.
11:36Not realizing
11:37that treating
11:37female characters
11:38with special privileges
11:39only makes people
11:40even more mad.
11:42Anyways,
11:42this story was
11:43boring most of the time.
11:45It only felt new
11:46when Tails made
11:47that backpack
11:48and when the monsters
11:49went up a wall
11:50and kept Sonic
11:51from following them.
11:52The story was so lazy
11:54that it bored me
11:55most of the time.
11:56It was slow pacing
11:57and a forced plot too.
11:59The story was written
